How to Compare Fragrance Oil Samples Before Choosing a Wholesale Supplier
Share
Is the cheapest per gram the cheapest supplier? Not necessarily. Compare the oil cost per candle at the load that passed, plus delivery per gram, at the size you will actually buy. In a worked example, an oil at ₹4.00 per gram that needs 10% costs more per candle than one at ₹5.00 per gram that passes at 7%.
What else should I compare besides the candle? Documents on request (MSDS, IFRA), what the product page states (load, cure, vanillin), pack sizes from sample to bulk, price per gram at 1 kg, stock depth at 1 kg, and whether a second pack matches the first.
Where does CSI stand? Honestly: 102 oil listings, the largest listed size is 1 kg, 48 pages state a candle load or range in their load wording (two perfume-grade oud pages also list candles at 10% in a usage table), no measured throw data, documents on request on WhatsApp. Put our samples in your blind round and let the candle decide.

Is it actually the oil? Make the round fair first
In our judgement, the usual way a supplier comparison goes wrong is not dishonesty. It is drift. Supplier A's sample arrived first and was poured in March in the old wax; supplier B's in April in a new bag; supplier C's candle was judged on day 6 because a customer was waiting. The winner is then whichever sample happened to get the kindest conditions, and a supplier relationship worth lakhs over a year is decided by a wick pack.
So the question "is it the oil?" matters here as much as in any troubleshooting post. Before a result counts against any supplier, including us, check that the jar, wax, wick, load, pour day, cure day and room were identical, and that your reference candle performed as usual. If the reference was weak in a round, that round says nothing about any supplier. Comparing two oils head to head, with swapped positions and a decision rule, has its own method in How to Compare Two Fragrance Oils for Actual Candle Performance; this page scales that to several suppliers and adds everything that is not in the jar.
The blind comparison protocol
Choosing what to compare
Pick two or three scent types that matter to your range, and for each, the nearest equivalent each supplier sells: a lavender, a citrus-amber blend, a fresh green. Names differ between suppliers and so do interpretations; choose by the notes on the page, not the name, and not by how strong the bottle smells (see Can a Fragrance Oil Smell Strong in the Bottle but Perform Poorly in a Candle?). Buy the sample size each supplier offers at its list price, and note the purchase date and any pack or batch reference printed on the bottle. If a supplier offers a free or special "sample" that is not the product you would buy, ask whether it is the same oil as the listed 1 kg; you want to compare what you will receive at volume.
Building the round
Three scents from three suppliers plus a reference is ten candles. Worked example on CSI materials: 1,380 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹700.21), ten 150 g clear jars (₹944.00) and ten Eco C1 wicks (₹59.00): ₹1,703.21 before any oil. Every candle at 8% (12 g of oil, 138 g of wax), unless an oil's page states a lower maximum, in which case test that oil at its own top figure and note it. CSI 464 states a fragrance load "up to 10%"; if your wax allows more, the round still runs at one common load, because the question is which oil throws better at the load you can afford.
The paperwork half: what to ask every supplier
Ask every supplier the same questions in the same words, in writing, and record the answers on one sheet. A supplier's answer, and the time it takes, is part of the comparison. None of these questions is unusual for a wholesale buyer to ask.
| Ask | Why it matters | What a useful answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| MSDS and IFRA documentation for each oil you shortlisted | Labelling, safe handling, your own records | Documents for the specific oil, on request, dated |
| What load, cure and vanillin figures the page or documents state | Sets your test ceiling and your colour risk | A stated candle range or maximum, not only perfume rates |
| Pack sizes from sample to the largest listed | Can you step up without a gap? | A sample, a mid size and a bulk size of the same oil |
| Price per gram at the size you will buy, and above it | The real unit cost | Listed prices, or a written quote with GST invoice terms |
| Stock of your shortlist at that size, today and on reorder | A winner you cannot reorder is not a winner | In stock now; a straight answer on restock timing |
| Delivery charge and dispatch time to your pincode | Adds to unit cost and to your lead time | A figure and a typical dispatch time in writing |
| Whether consecutive orders come from the same production batch | Pack-to-pack consistency | A direct answer, even if it is "not always" |
Three notes. IFRA wording on a page is not a certificate: many pages, CSI's included, use phrases like "IFRA-certified" or "IFRA compliant"; ask for the document for the oil you intend to use. Perfume rates are not candle loads: perfume-grade listings often quote 15% to 25%; those are perfume figures, and a comparison that tests them at candle loads is fair only if the supplier states a candle load too. Stock is a snapshot: check it again four weeks after the first check, because a supplier that is always "restocking next week" on your winner is a reorder risk.
Comparing price honestly: per candle, not per gram
Price per gram is where most comparisons start and too many end. Two adjustments make it honest. First, cost per candle at the load that passed your blind round. Second, delivery spread across the order, at the size you will actually buy.
| Oil | Price per gram | Load that passed | Oil per 150 g candle | Cost per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil P | ₹4.00 | 10% | 15 g | ₹60.00 |
| Oil Q | ₹5.00 | 7% | 10.5 g | ₹52.50 |
Oil P is cheaper per gram and ₹7.50 dearer per candle, ₹750.00 per 100 candles, and it runs at the top of a 10% ceiling where sweating is more likely. The same logic applies to delivery: in a worked example, a ₹150.00 delivery charge adds ₹0.15 per gram to a 1 kg order and ₹0.03 per gram to a 5 kg one. Ask each supplier for the charge to your pincode; one of the reviews on CSI's own store says our "delivery charges are very high", and another asks us to work on "pricing and delivery timelines". Put delivery in your sheet for us as for everyone.
Finally, compare at the same size. If one supplier lists 1 kg as its largest size and another lists 5 kg, compare per gram at the size you will actually order, and ask the first for a written quote at your volume. CSI's largest listed oil size is 1 kg; anything larger is a quote on WhatsApp, which we will not pre-empt in a blog post.
Where CSI stands, stated honestly
We will not describe any other supplier. Here is CSI's side of your paper half, from our own catalogue on 25 September 2026, including the parts that do not flatter us. Use it to fill our column; ask the same questions of everyone else.
| Criterion | What CSI shows | The honest gap |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 102 oil listings; 95 with at least one size in stock; 80 with every listed size in stock | 7 listings fully out of stock, including Mogra, Rajnigandha, Regal Royal Oud and Spiced Rum |
| Pack sizes | 15 g on 56 listings (52 in stock); 50 g on 89 (84 in stock); 1 kg on 101 | Largest listed oil size is 1 kg; bulk above that is a WhatsApp quote, not a listed price |
| Price per gram at 1 kg | From ₹2.83 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹8.96 among the 44 oils whose load wording states a candle load and whose 1 kg was in stock | Perfume-grade listings run up to ₹24.06 per gram at 1 kg and are mostly priced flat per gram across sizes; several candle oils (Apple Cinnamon, for one) have no discount from 50 g to 1 kg |
| Stock depth at 1 kg | 82 of 101 listings with a 1 kg size had it in stock | The store shows in stock or out, not quantity; Vetiver's 1 kg, for example, was out while smaller sizes were in stock |
| What pages state | 48 of 102 pages state a candle load or range in their load wording; 21 state a cure; 16 state vanillin content | 52 pages state no candle load (Lavender Oud and Amber Oud Royal list "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%" only in a perfume usage table); throw wording where present is the page's own claim |
| Measured performance | None published | CSI has no measured throw, stability or discolouration data; your blind round is the only evidence |
| Documents | MSDS and IFRA documentation on request on WhatsApp; GST invoice available | Not presented as downloads on the pages in our captured text; ask per oil |
| Batch information | Ask on WhatsApp before ordering | Not published on product pages |
| Listing accuracy | Prices and stock re-checked on 25 September 2026 | Some titles carry stale dates (Rajnigandha's title says "Ships 12th July 2025" though it is out of stock); confirm dispatch on WhatsApp |
| Customer reviews | 86 Judge.me reviews across the store, including 4-star and 3-star ones | Few per product; some mention delivery charges and timelines |
What that adds up to, in our own judgement: CSI is set up for makers who test at 15 g or 50 g and buy in 500 g and 1 kg steps, with a wide range in stock at those sizes, stated loads on about half the pages, and documents on request. If your business needs published lot data, listed prices above 1 kg or measured performance data, ask us on WhatsApp what we can provide, and weigh the answer against what others provide. Choosing one supplier for a whole multi-collection range raises further questions, covered in the guide to what to check before placing a bulk order with one supplier.
The scorecard and the decision
Performance first, as a gate; commercial terms second, as a weighted score among the suppliers that passed the gate. The weights below are a starting point for a small business selling container candles; change them before you open the key, not after.
| Criterion | Weight | How to score 1–5 |
|---|---|---|
| Blind round: best score per row, averaged | 30 | Straight from F3-style score sheets |
| Second-pack match | 15 | 5 = panel cannot pick the odd strip; 1 = obvious difference |
| Oil cost per candle at the passing load (incl. delivery per gram) | 20 | 5 = lowest in the round; scale the others |
| Stock depth of your shortlist at your buying size, two checks four weeks apart | 10 | 5 = all in stock both times |
| Documents provided on request (MSDS, IFRA) for your shortlist | 10 | 5 = every document, promptly |
| Pack ladder: sample, mid and bulk sizes of the same oil | 5 | 5 = no gap from test to reorder |
| Page information: stated load, cure, vanillin | 5 | 5 = all three stated for your shortlist |
| Communication, dispatch, GST invoice | 5 | 5 = clear written answers within a day or two |
The winning oils still go through your own approval before they enter the range (How to Qualify a New Fragrance Oil Before Adding It to Your Candle Business). Two rules keep the scorecard honest. A supplier cannot buy its way past the gate: a low price never rescues an oil that failed blind. And two suppliers within a few points of each other are, for practical purposes, tied; split your range between them rather than pretend the scorecard is more precise than it is. In our judgement, many small businesses are best served by a main supplier for most scents and a second for two or three that the first could not match, which also protects against a stock-out.
CSI samples to put in your round
One CSI sample for each row of the illustrative grid, and the jar we would run the whole round in. Oils are chosen because their scent types are widely sold (so there is a like-for-like to compare), their pages state a candle load, and every size was in stock on 25 September 2026; not on throw, which CSI has not measured. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8%.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia is one of the suppliers you may be comparing. This page does not name or describe any other supplier, sets out a method that treats all of them, including us, the same way, and lists our own gaps, from the 1 kg size ceiling to the reviews that criticise our delivery charges.
Every CSI price, per-gram figure and catalogue count was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; every size shown in the pick cards is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock listings are named where they are mentioned. Loads, notes and IFRA wording are quoted from product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.
The protocol, codes, scorecard weights and worked price example (oils P and Q) are editorial method and illustration; CSI has no measured throw data for any oil. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
