I'm Making 500 Candles for Diwali — Which Fragrances Should I Buy and How Much Fragrance Oil Will I Need?
Share
Which fragrances should I use for Diwali candles? A festive five: Sandalwood, Cinnamon Vanilla, Saffron Cedarwood, Jasmine and Dark Vanilla Oud. Sandalwood takes the largest share. See the scent split.
What does the whole order cost? Oil ₹41,727.68, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹59,990.00, wicks ₹3,245.00, jars ₹36,108.00: ₹1,41,070.68, or ₹282.14 of materials per candle. With CSI 464 wax, ₹1,31,820.68.
Is it too late to order for Diwali? Not if you order this week. Working back from 8 November with a one- to two-week cure, pouring needs to finish by mid-October. See the 45-day schedule.
Which scents, and how many candles each
Diwali candles are bought for the home, for pooja, and above all as gifts. That favours scents with broad acceptance and a festive character: sandalwood, warm sweet spice, saffron and wood, jasmine, and one richer evening scent for premium boxes. The split below gives the largest share to sandalwood because it is the least likely to be disliked by the person receiving the gift. This is reasoning about the occasion, not sales data; if you know your customers prefer florals, shift the numbers.
| Scent | Candles | Share | Why it is in the range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood | 125 | 25% | Classic, calm, universally accepted for pooja and gifting |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | 100 | 20% | Warm, sweet, reads as festive and homely |
| Saffron Cedarwood | 100 | 20% | Spiced wood; saffron is a festive note |
| Jasmine | 100 | 20% | The floral of Indian celebrations |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | 75 | 15% | The premium, evening scent of the range |
If you are selling mixed gift boxes, keep the split close to even so every box can hold a full set. If you are selling single candles at markets, weight it harder towards your best seller from last year. For more scent ideas specific to the festival, see the best fragrance oils for Diwali candles and the best Indian fragrances for Diwali candles; this page stays on quantities and cost.
The grams and the packs
Each candle takes 16 g of oil. Multiply by the candles per scent, add 5% for pour loss and test burns (a working assumption; 3% is enough for an experienced pourer), and round up to the cheapest combination of listed packs. The pack choice is not always the obvious one, which is why every line below was checked against every in-stock size of 100 g and above.
| Scent | Candles | Oil in candles | With 5% | Packs | Bought | Cost | Oil per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood | 125 | 2,000 g | 2,100 g | 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 100 g | 2,100 g | ₹10,556.28 | ₹84.45 |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | 100 | 1,600 g | 1,680 g | 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | 1,700 g | ₹7,823.40 | ₹78.23 |
| Saffron Cedarwood | 100 | 1,600 g | 1,680 g | 3 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | 1,700 g | ₹9,145.00 | ₹91.45 |
| Jasmine | 100 | 1,600 g | 1,680 g | 3 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | 1,700 g | ₹6,743.00 | ₹67.43 |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | 75 | 1,200 g | 1,260 g | 2 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g | 1,300 g | ₹7,460.00 | ₹99.47 |
| Total | 500 | 8,000 g | 8,400 g | 8,500 g | ₹41,727.68 | ₹83.46 |
The total is 8,500 g, 100 g more than the 5% plan because packs come in fixed sizes. At a 3% allowance the requirement falls to 8,240 g, but once each scent is rounded up to 100 g steps you still buy 8,500 g for ₹41,727.68: the pack rounding already absorbs the difference, so the 5% plan costs nothing extra here. Two lines deserve comment. Saffron Cedarwood is bought as three 500 g bottles and two 100 g, because its 500 g costs ₹2,584.20 and its 1 kg ₹6,867.60: a kilo plus 500 g plus two 100 g would cost ₹10,844.20, ₹1,699.20 more. Jasmine is bought as 500 g bottles too, since two 500 g cost ₹3,922.00 against ₹3,923.00 for the kilo — effectively the same.
| Candle size | Oil per candle | Oil in 500 candles | With 5% | Approx. oil cost | Wax with 5% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 g | 8 g | 4.0 kg | 4.20 kg | ₹20,618.38 | 48.3 kg |
| 150 g | 12 g | 6.0 kg | 6.30 kg | ₹30,927.57 | 72.5 kg |
| 200 g | 16 g | 8.0 kg | 8.40 kg | ₹41,236.77 | 96.6 kg |
Many Diwali ranges use smaller candles for gift boxes and diyas. At 100 g the oil order halves to about 4.2 kg. The cost column uses the average price per gram of the pack mix above (₹4.91), so treat it as a guide; recalculate the packs for your actual size. How much fragrance oil for 500 candles has the general quantity maths for other loads and sizes.
The full bill
Here is the complete material order for 500 candles of 200 g. Wax is 96.6 kg including 5% (500 × 184 g × 1.05), bought as ten 10 kg packs. Wicks are 550 Eco Thin C1, 50 spare for test burns and mistakes. Jars are 102 packs of five White Matte Glass Jars, ten spare for breakage. Check the jar's capacity and the wick size for your candle on the product pages before you order in quantity.
| Line | Quantity | Cost | Per candle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance oil (five scents) | 8,500 g | ₹41,727.68 | ₹83.46 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 10 × 10 kg | ₹59,990.00 | ₹119.98 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 5 × 100 + 1 × 50 | ₹3,245.00 | ₹6.49 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 102 packs of 5 | ₹36,108.00 | ₹72.22 |
| Total | ₹1,41,070.68 | ₹282.14 |
The jars cost ₹36,108.00, more than half the wax bill and not far below the oil. Fragrance is 29.6% of the material bill here. Per candle, materials come to ₹282.14, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. That is the floor under your selling price, and for gift boxes you still need to add the box, the label and the insert.
| Wax | Packs | Cost | Per candle | Fragrance load ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 10 × 10 kg | ₹59,990.00 | ₹119.98 | up to 13% (wax maker's stated maximum) |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 10 × 10 kg | ₹50,740.00 | ₹101.48 | up to 10% (wax maker's stated maximum) |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 2 × 50 kg | ₹42,480.00 | ₹84.96 | not quoted in this series — check the product page |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 10 × 10 kg | ₹63,700.00 | ₹127.40 | not quoted in this series — check the product page |
Switching from Luxury Soy Wax Chunks to CSI 464 saves ₹9,250.00 on this order, bringing the bill to ₹1,31,820.68. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is cheaper still at the 50 kg size, which is one of the few catalogue items with a real bulk break (₹424.80 a kilo at 5 kg and above, against ₹450.00 at 1 kg). But do not switch wax 45 days before Diwali without testing: scent throw and wicking change with the wax. If you have not poured in it, stay with the wax you know.
45 days: the schedule
Working back from 8 November, most festive buying happens in the last two to three weeks. Candles need to be cured and packed before that window opens, and pouring 500 candles takes more than a weekend. The schedule below is a working plan for a small workshop; adjust every date to your own capacity. For the sourcing side of a festive run, see wholesale fragrance oils for Diwali production and buying Diwali fragrance oils in bulk.
A lower-cost festive mix
If ₹41,727.68 of oil is more than your price point can carry, the same 500 candles can be scented with value oils in similar families. The swap below keeps Jasmine and replaces the other four.
| Scent | Candles | Packs | Bought | Cost | Oil per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud | 125 | 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 100 g | 2,100 g | ₹9,515.52 | ₹76.12 |
| Apple Cinnamon | 100 | 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | 1,700 g | ₹8,064.12 | ₹80.64 |
| British Rose | 100 | 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | 1,700 g | ₹5,345.40 | ₹53.45 |
| Jasmine | 100 | 3 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | 1,700 g | ₹6,743.00 | ₹67.43 |
| Roasted Coffee | 75 | 1 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g | 1,300 g | ₹4,908.00 | ₹65.44 |
| Total | 500 | 8,500 g | ₹34,576.04 | ₹69.15 |
The value mix saves ₹7,151.64 on oil, ₹14.30 per candle. Woody Oud stands in for Sandalwood, Apple Cinnamon for Cinnamon Vanilla, British Rose for Saffron Cedarwood and Roasted Coffee for Dark Vanilla Oud. These are not the same scents, and a value mix suits a lower price point, not a premium gift box. Luxury fragrance oils for Diwali gifting candles covers the other direction.

Once Diwali is done, the November–February wedding season follows, and many of the same scents carry over. Keep your production records — which scent sold out, which lingered, what load you used — and the next seasonal order starts from data. How much oil to order for Diwali production covers the general method, and the 1,000-piece corporate order shows the same maths for a fixed client order.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A festive order is where suppliers are tempted to round everything up to whole kilos. This page buys to the gram plan instead, flags the oil whose 500 g is cheaper than its 1 kg, and says plainly that most kilos save no money.
Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every pack in the plan was in stock on the pull date; stock during the festive season can change, so confirm before you pay. Totals, gram counts and per-candle figures are arithmetic, shown so you can check them.
The scent split, 5% wastage, pour rate, delivery and cure times are working assumptions for planning, not CSI delivery promises or a sales forecast. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. For a combined festive quote, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Candles are 200 g at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax); 100 g and 150 g shown for sensitivity. Wastage of 5% (3% shown for comparison) is a working assumption. Pack mixes are the cheapest combination of in-stock 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs covering the requirement. The scent split, pour rate of about 50 candles a day, delivery by about 1 October and a one- to two-week cure are working assumptions, not CSI promises. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
