The Indian scent words, matched

Festive candles in India sell on recognition. A scent with a familiar Indian name, from a garland flower to a temple wood, needs no explaining at the counter or in a product listing. That is reasoning about how buyers shop, not sales data. The table below takes the words Indian buyers use for festive scents and matches each to the CSI oil you can test today. Where a word has more than one match, the value option is listed first. Where there is no in-stock match, the table says so.

Two words have no in-stock match, and they are two of the best-loved: mogra and rajnigandha. If your buyers ask for either by name, tell them plainly you do not have it this Diwali rather than selling a different white floral under that name. Every other word has at least one in-stock oil, and several have a value and a premium option.

Florals: raat ki rani, chameli, gulab

Indian festive florals are white, sweet and evening-scented, with rose everywhere alongside them. With mogra and rajnigandha unavailable, three in-stock florals carry the family. Raat Ki Rani is named for the night-blooming jasmine of Indian courtyards, and it is the most distinctly Indian floral name in stock. At ₹112.00 a candle from 100 g bottles, or ₹108.38 at the kilo, it sits in the middle of the festive price range. Jasmine is the everyday white floral, closer to the chameli of garlands. It is the cheapest floral to produce, at ₹68.80 from 100 g and ₹62.75 from 500 g, and tenth in the collection's best-selling sort.

For gulab, British Rose is the value rose and the cheapest festive oil in the catalogue: ₹54.75 a candle from 100 g, ₹49.09 from the kilo. It is second in the collection's best-selling sort. Smoked Rose Royale is the premium, smoky rose, listed from 100 g at ₹799.00. Ylang Ylang is not an Indian word, but its heady floral profile, by name, can sit beside the white florals in a range if you want a third. Test it next to Jasmine and Raat Ki Rani before deciding.

Woods and earth: chandan, kesar, gilli mitti

For chandan there are three options. Sandalwood is the value sandalwood and sixth in the collection's best-selling sort, with all five sizes in stock and a flat ₹5.03/g from 100 g up. Sacred Sandal Ember, by its name a smoky sandal, is in stock at 500 g only, at ₹3,999.00; its 100 g and 1 kg are out of stock. Santal Noir is the premium sandal at ₹145.92 a candle from the kilo, and it has a 15 g tester at ₹166.00. Kesar belongs to sweets and festive cooking, so it reads warm rather than floral. Saffron Cedarwood carries it by name, over a cedarwood base. Gilli mitti is the most distinctly Indian scent word on this page: the smell of dry earth after the first rain. CSI lists it as Gilli Mitti (Patchouli), fifteenth in the collection's best-selling sort, at ₹8.96/g flat from 50 g to 1 kg. It is one of the dearer festive oils at ₹143.36 a candle. Earthy scents divide buyers more than florals do, so pour a small batch and see how it sells before committing. Resins and smoke: oud, attar, bakhoor

Oud and attar sit in a long Indian tradition of perfume oils, and resin smoke is part of the festive home, from incense sticks to burning resin. CSI has five in-stock oils in this family. Woody Oud is the entry oud at ₹72.50 a candle, twelfth in the best-selling sort. Dark Vanilla Oud adds vanilla to oud, sixteenth in the sort. Two cautions for this family. First, smoke and resin names promise a lot, and buyers who burn real bakhoor at home have a clear reference. Test these side by side with an incense stick nearby and judge honestly. Second, the two bakhoor-style oils have no tester below 100 g, so trying both costs ₹1,598.00. An Indian trio, costed

Here is a small, distinctly Indian Diwali run: 60 candles, 20 each of Raat Ki Rani, Sandalwood and Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) — a floral, a chandan and a gilli mitti. At 20 candles a scent, each needs 320 g of oil, or 336 g with 5% for pour loss and test burns (a working assumption). For all three oils, four 100 g bottles is the cheapest way to cover that, cheaper than one 500 g. So this run buys at the 100 g rate. For Sandalwood and Gilli Mitti the difference is zero, because both are flat-priced.
