CSI Cost Reduction · Scaling Purchases
At 5,000 candles a month a worked candle needs ₹9,58,857.60 of materials. Wax is 38.9% of it and one material: negotiate it first. Oils come next, one by one; wicks, at 4.9% and safety-critical, come last.
₹3,73,446.40
monthly wax spend at 5,000 candles, the first line to negotiate · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which raw-material cost should I renegotiate first at 5,000 a month? The biggest monthly rupee line that has the most supplier options and the least switching pain. On a worked candle at CSI prices that is wax first (₹3,73,446.40 a month, 38.9% of spend), then fragrance by oil (₹2,78,611.20 across the range), then jars, boxes and, last, wicks (₹47,200.00, 4.9%).

Why wax before fragrance, when fragrance is nearly as big? Because the wax is one material bought from one supplier in one large monthly quantity (736 kg), and container soy wax has several sources to compare. Fragrance spend is split across oils (16 kg each in a four-oil range, the largest ₹83,536.00 a month), and each oil is tied to a scent your customers know, so you negotiate oil by oil and rarely switch.

What does scale actually change? At 500 a month you may still be buying packs that cost more per unit than a bigger listed pack; fix that first. At 5,000 you are past every listed tier: CSI's 10 kg wax, 1 kg oils, 1,000 wicks and 100-piece jars and boxes are the largest listed packs, and most are flat per unit. Better prices from there are a conversation (for us, on WhatsApp), not a bigger pack.

What is a concession worth? As an illustration only (not a CSI offer), 3% off wax is worth ₹1,34,440.70 a year at this volume; 3% off wicks, ₹16,992.00.
The short answer
Rule: rank lines by monthly ₹ at the new volume, then by how many credible suppliers exist and how hard a switch is; negotiate the biggest line with real options first, and the safety-critical small lines last.
Worked spend at 5,000 a month: ₹9,58,857.60 (₹191.77 a candle): wax 38.9%, fragrance 29.1%, jars 15.4%, boxes 11.7%, wicks 4.9%. Wax and fragrance are 68.0%.
Order: 1 wax → 2 fragrance, top oils first → 3 jars → 4 boxes (quick, no burn test) → 5 wicks (keep the tested wick).
Before you negotiate: buy every line at its best listed tier, cut oil SKUs to concentrate kilos, and bring a 12-month forecast.

Straight answer
My candle business is scaling from 500 to 5,000 units a month. Which raw-material costs should I renegotiate first as my purchasing volume increases?
Renegotiate in order of monthly rupees at the new volume, adjusted for how many credible suppliers each line has and how hard a switch would be. On a worked 160 g candle priced at CSI's live list, 5,000 candles a month costs ₹9,58,857.60 in materials. Wax is the biggest line at ₹3,73,446.40, one material, one supplier, 736 kg a month, with other container-wax makers to compare: start there, with your current supplier, before you consider moving. Fragrance comes second (₹2,78,611.20) but is split across oils and tied to scents your customers know, so negotiate your top two or three oils by kilo, oil by oil. Jars and boxes follow; boxes are small but quick, because a box change needs no burn test. Wicks come last: 4.9% of spend, and the part of the candle you should not switch for price. Before any of it, make sure you are buying each line at its best listed tier, and bring a forecast: a supplier prices a 12-month plan, not a hope.
One line: negotiate the biggest monthly rupee line with real alternatives first (usually wax), your top oils next, and leave the small, safety-critical wick until last.
At 500 a month, check your tiers before you negotiate: a clear 200ml Salsa bought in 5s costs ₹10.62 more per jar than in 50s, ₹5,310.00 a month at 500. Small oil bottles cost more per gram than the kilo on most oils. Wax, wicks and boxes at CSI are flat, so no tier is missed there. Prices checked 4 October 2026.
Ask which of my packs are costing me more

Your spend at 500 and at 5,000 a month

Negotiation starts with a number the supplier can check: kilos and pieces a month.

The title gives two volumes and no candle, so this page prices a worked candle at CSI's live list: a 160 g fill in the clear 200ml Salsa (a 200 ml jar holds less than 200 g of wax; weigh your own test pour), 8% load (12.8 g oil, 147.2 g wax), Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, an Eco C2 wick, a Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm, and a four-oil range in equal shares (Woody Oud, Roasted Coffee, Lavender, Jasmine; worked example). Each line is priced at the largest listed pack. Swap in your own candle; the ranking method does not change.

Total ₹95,885.76 ₹9,58,857.60 100.0%
Per candle ₹191.77 ₹191.77

Two things stand out. At CSI's listed prices, materials cost the same ₹191.77 a candle at 500 and at 5,000, because every line is flat per unit once you are on the largest pack (and the clear Salsa's only break comes at 50). Volume does not lower the list price; it gives you something to negotiate with. And wax plus fragrance is 68.0% of a ₹9,58,857.60 monthly bill, ₹1,15,06,291.20 a year: that is where a percentage point means real money. Spread across oils, though, the fragrance line breaks into four smaller bills: Lavender ₹83,536.00, Woody Oud ₹72,499.20, Jasmine ₹62,768.00, Roasted Coffee ₹59,808.00 a month.

The renegotiation ranking

Spend decides where the money is. Options and switching pain decide where you can actually get it.
Renegotiation priority at 5,000 a month · worked candle
Spend at CSI live prices · "options" and "switching" are judgement · a 3% concession is an illustration for comparing lines, not a CSI offer

2 Fragrance (top oils first) ₹2,78,611.20 ₹1,00,300.03 Few per scent Very high: the scent itself Per-oil price at your kilos, lot consistency, documentation

5 Wicks ₹47,200.00 ₹16,992.00 Several, not equivalent High: burn safety Supply continuity; leave price

1 · Wax: the biggest single bill, one material, one conversation

736 kg a month of one wax is the strongest purchasing position in the business: one SKU, one supplier, a predictable monthly quantity. Each 1% on wax is worth ₹44,813.57 a year here. Container soy wax has several makers, which gives you comparisons; but a wax switch is a full reformulation, so the first move is to negotiate with your current supplier, using other quotes as a reference, not as a threat you would struggle to carry out. What to ask for (price, lot consistency, a price-hold window, delivery cadence) and what not to promise is the 100 kg a month wax post; how 25 kg or 100 kg formats change cost per candle is the commercial wax quantities post.

Argued against our own interest: if you buy CSI 464 from us at 5,000 a month, buying more bags will not lower the price: our 10 kg costs exactly what ten 1 kg bags cost, and 10 kg is our largest CSI 464 pack. The price at that volume is a WhatsApp conversation. And if another supplier's wax is cheaper and passes your full-life test, switching may be right; but never switch wax for price alone, and never during a peak season.

2 · Fragrance: negotiate oil by oil, biggest kilos first

The fragrance line is nearly as big as wax, but it is not one purchase. Each oil is its own bill, its own scent and, in practice, its own supplier relationship: you cannot move Lavender to another house without testing whether customers notice. So rank oils by kilos a month and start with the top two or three; a 3% concession on Lavender alone, at 16 kg a month, is ₹30,072.96 a year. CSI lists no oil above 1 kg, so 5 kg or larger pricing is a conversation; what a supplier's 5 kg offer is worth against the cash it ties up is the 5 kg fragrance pack post. Check the 500 g against the 1 kg on each oil first: on Jasmine the 1 kg costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g packs.

3–5 · Jars, boxes, wicks

Jars are the third line (15.4%). The clear Salsa's listed break is at 50; past 100 there is no listed tier, so price is again a conversation, and a jar from a new supplier is a visible change plus a wick and heat retest. What a large jar tier is worth against the stock it ties up is the 1,000-jar discount post. Boxes (11.7%) are small but easy: plain corrugated boxes are a commodity, and a change needs a drop test, not a burn test, so they can be done in parallel with the wax conversation. Wicks (4.9%) come last. Even a 3% concession is ₹16,992.00 a year, and the wick is the part that keeps the candle safe; what matters at 5,000 a month is supply continuity of the wick you tested, not its price. Ordering wicks at production scale is the 5,000-wick order post.

What scale changes, line by line

At 500 a month you are a pack buyer. At 5,000 you are a forecast a supplier can plan around.
From 500 to 5,000 a month · what changes in the buying
CSI listed packs and prices on 4 October 2026 · "conversation" = ask on WhatsApp; no discount is implied
Line At 500 a month At 5,000 a month Listed tier left to climb?
Wax (CSI 464) 8 ten-kilo bags; same price per gram as 1 kg 74 ten-kilo bags; storage and delivery cadence become the issue None: flat from 1 kg, 10 kg is the largest pack
Fragrance 1.6 kg per oil: 1 kg bottles fit 16 kg per oil: sixteen 1 kg bottles each None above 1 kg; check 500 g vs 1 kg per oil
Jars (clear Salsa) 500 jars: 50-packs reach ₹29.50 50 hundred-packs None past 50
Boxes 500 boxes: 5 hundred-packs 50 hundred-packs None: flat
Wicks (C2) 500: one 500-pack 5,000: five 1,000-packs None: flat

Scale changes three things that matter more than list price. Cash and storage: two weeks of wax at 5,000 a month is ₹1,74,274.99 on the shelf; a month of oil is ₹2,78,611.20. Lot consistency: 74 bags a month will span lots, and a lot change can move frosting, throw or wick behaviour; ask how lots are numbered and whether consecutive deliveries can come from one lot. Delivery rhythm: a supplier can plan a fixed monthly dispatch; that is worth negotiating before price. When the volume is high enough to ask for wholesale pricing at all is the when-to-ask post; whether to negotiate per order or commit to a monthly volume is the per-order versus commitment post.

Scale the approved formula, not a new one
Do not combine a ten-fold volume jump with a supplier switch. Bigger batches heat, hold and cool differently; if you also change wax or oil supplier, you will not know which caused a problem. Keep materials fixed through the ramp and negotiate price with the suppliers you already tested. Keeping a formula consistent when procurement grows is the 1,000 to 10,000 a month consistency post.

Before you ask: four things to fix and bring

A supplier gives better terms to a buyer who makes their planning easier.
1
Buy every line at its best listed tierAt 500 a month, jars in 5s instead of 50s cost ₹5,310.00 more a month; Woody Oud in 50 g bottles instead of 1 kg costs ₹11.48 more per 12.8 g candle (₹1,434.88 a month if a quarter of 500 candles use it). Fix these first: they need no negotiation.
2
Cut oil SKUs to concentrate kilosSixteen kilos of four oils is a stronger position than four kilos each of sixteen oils. Which components to standardise first is the subject of the standardise-first post.
3
Write a 12-month forecast by materialKilos of wax, kilos per oil, jars, wicks and boxes by month, with Diwali, weddings and gifting peaks marked. At 5,000 a month: about 736 kg wax and 64 kg oil.
4
Know your quality asksLot numbers on every delivery, documentation for each oil (MSDS and IFRA on request), the same lot across consecutive deliveries where possible, and notice before any reformulation.
5
Qualify a second source before you need leverageAn approved, tested alternative for wax and your top oil is what makes a negotiation real. Its cost and when it pays is the two-supplier post.
6
Ask, then compare on cost per saleable candleCompare offers on landed cost per saleable candle (freight, breakage, rejects included), not on price per kilo. A bigger minimum order is a cash decision: the MOQ versus working-capital post.
Mistake: opening with "give me 10% or I'll switch" on wax or a signature oil. Why it fails: both sides know the switch costs you a full retest and, for an oil, possibly your customers. Fix: negotiate on what you can genuinely offer: a forecast, a fixed monthly dispatch, consolidated orders, prompt payment. And keep the switch threat for boxes, where it is real.

Concentration, switching and what not to trade away

The cheapest supplier is the one whose failure you can survive.

At 5,000 a month a single supplier holding wax, oils, jars and wicks is convenient and dangerous: one stock-out stops production. The opposite, a different supplier for every oil, weakens every negotiation. A middle path works for most small businesses: one primary for wax with a tested backup, oils concentrated with one or two houses, jars and boxes from whoever is reliable at your volume. What a stock-out costs is the stock-out cost post; how to keep purchasing from silently changing your formula is the approved-supplier list post.

Never trade these for a lower price
Any of these can cost more than a 3% concession saves
Item Why
The wick your full-life test approved Burn safety; a cheaper "equivalent" is a new wick system
The approved fragrance load Throw is what customers buy; a lower load is a test result, not a negotiation
Lot consistency on wax and oils A lot change can move frosting, throw or wick behaviour at 5,000 a month
Documentation for each oil MSDS and IFRA documents on request; your labels and customers rely on them
A supplier who tells you about reformulations Silent changes are the most expensive kind
If you buy from CSI: every line on this page is already at our largest listed pack at 5,000 a month, and most are flat per unit, so we cannot lower your price by selling you more of the same pack. Send us your monthly kilos and counts on WhatsApp and we will discuss volume pricing, lot consistency, a price-hold window and a dispatch rhythm. We will not quote a percentage here that we have not agreed with you; and if a local box maker beats us on plain corrugated boxes, buy their boxes. Setting the cost targets that negotiation should serve is the cluster hub on target costing.

Argued against our own interest: the 10 kg bag costs exactly the same per gram as the 1 kg (0.5074 a gram), and 10 kg is the largest pack we list. Buying more bags does nothing to the price; at this volume the price is a WhatsApp conversation, and we will not print a discount here that we have not agreed with you.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every material priced here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our bigger packs of wax, wicks, boxes and most oils do not lower the price per unit, that at 5,000 a month our list price is not our last word but we will not invent a discount, and that plain boxes are worth quoting locally.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, per pack; every pack shown is in stock on that date. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (Salsa dimensions, box inside dimensions), we say so. Frequently asked questions

Which supplier should I renegotiate with first when my candle business grows?
The one holding your biggest monthly rupee line with real alternatives, usually wax. On a worked candle at 5,000 a month, wax is ₹3,73,446.40 (38.9% of spend); fragrance is close behind but split across oils and tied to scents.
How much does it cost in raw materials to make 5,000 candles a month?
On a worked 160 g candle at CSI live prices, about ₹9,58,857.60 a month (₹191.77 a candle): wax ₹3,73,446.40, fragrance ₹2,78,611.20, jars ₹1,47,500.00, boxes ₹1,12,100.00, wicks ₹47,200.00. Your candle will differ.
Do bigger packs of soy wax cost less at CSI?
Not for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464: the 10 kg bag costs the same per gram as the 1 kg (0.5074 a gram), and 10 kg is the largest pack. At high volume, ask on WhatsApp about volume pricing.
Should I switch suppliers to get a better price as I scale?
Not during the ramp, and not for wax, oils or wicks on price alone: each switch is a retest, and an oil switch can change the scent customers buy. Negotiate with tested suppliers first; switch boxes freely.
What should I ask a supplier for besides a lower price?
Lot numbers and consistency across deliveries, a price-hold window, a fixed monthly dispatch, documentation for each oil, and notice before any reformulation.
Is it worth negotiating the price of wicks?
Rarely first. On the worked candle wicks are 4.9% of spend, so even 3% is ₹16,992.00 a year, and the wick is a safety part. Secure supply of the wick you tested instead.
500 to 5,000 candles a month
Start with wax, then your top oils. Bring a forecast, ask for consistency, and leave the wick alone.
Every line on the worked candle is already at CSI's largest listed pack at 5,000 a month. Send us your monthly kilos and counts on WhatsApp to discuss volume pricing, lot consistency, a price-hold window and dispatch rhythm.
