Set each component's target at the gap to a real alternative, not at its share of the ₹50.00. On an illustrative ₹250.00 candle the gaps add to ₹50.02: below ₹200.00 only if every test passes, ₹230.38 on the low-risk part alone.

Quick answers — read this first
How do I set a savings target for each component? Not by splitting the ₹50.00 evenly. Give each line a target equal to the gap between what it costs now and the best alternative you would genuinely test, ranked by risk. On an illustrative ₹250.00 candle the line targets are fragrance ₹17.50, wax ₹13.94, jar ₹11.00, box ₹7.58, and nothing on the wick or label: ₹50.02 in all, landing at ₹199.98.

Is ₹200.00 realistic, then? Only just, and only if every test passes. The low-risk part (fragrance load, a better jar tier, a kraft box) is a committed ₹19.62, which takes the candle to ₹230.38. The rest, ₹30.40, is stretch: a different oil, a different wax and a lighter jar, each a change the buyer could notice. Weighted by labelled judgement probabilities, expect about ₹29.39, a candle near ₹220.61.

Why not an even split? Because it asks the wrong lines. Spread by share, wax would owe ₹17.47 when its best real gap is ₹13.94; the wick would owe ₹1.20 that no burn test is worth; the jar would owe only ₹6.60 when it can give ₹11.00.

What is it worth, and how fast do the tests pay? At 500 candles a month (worked example; use your own) the full plan is ₹3,00,120.00 a year, the committed part ₹1,17,720.00. All five tests cost ₹10,682.28 and pay back in about 0.43 months if they pass.
The short answer
Method: rank lines by share of COGS → find each line's achievable gap against a real alternative → set the target at the gap, not at an even split → split it into committed (low risk) and stretch (visible or reformulation).
Targets on the illustrative ₹250.00: fragrance ₹17.50 · wax ₹13.94 · jar ₹11.00 · box ₹7.58 · wick and label nothing. Total ₹50.02; result ₹199.98.
Committed vs stretch: committed ₹19.62 (₹230.38); stretch ₹30.40; risk-adjusted expectation ₹29.39.
The gate: each target is reached only by a passed test, one change at a time; a failed test moves its rupees to the next candidate, never to a cut in safety or throw.
₹50.00 asked, line by line, against what is there Saving per candle. Outline: an even split asks this. Black: the gap a real alternative offers. Diamond: risk-adjusted expectation. 0 ₹5.00 ₹10.00 ₹15.00 ₹20.00 Fragrance ask ₹18.00 · gap ₹17.50 Wax ask ₹17.47 · gap ₹13.94 Jar ask ₹6.60 · gap ₹11.00 Box ask ₹6.00 · gap ₹7.58 Wick ask ₹1.20 · gap ₹0.10 Label + dye ask ₹0.73 · no gap even-split ask achievable gap risk-adjusted Gaps add to ₹50.02 if every lever passes; expected ₹29.39. Illustrative reader split; CSI live prices, 4 October 2026. Materials only.
For each line, the dashed box is what an even split of ₹50.00 would ask, the black bar is the gap a real alternative offers, and the diamond is the risk-adjusted expectation. Wax is asked for more than it has; the jar can give more than it is asked; the wick and label have nothing worth testing for.
Straight answer
My candle COGS is ₹250.00 and I want it below ₹200.00. How do I set a specific savings target for each raw-material component?
Use target costing, line by line. First, write the true BOM and each line's share of the ₹250.00. Second, for each line find the best alternative you would actually test, at real prices, and the gap between the two; a line with no real alternative gets no target, however big it is. Third, set each line's target at its gap and label it committed (invisible, low-risk) or stretch (a different material or a visible change). Fourth, add them up before you start: if the gaps do not reach ₹50.00, no amount of effort on materials will, and you need a design or price decision. On the illustrative split the gaps add to ₹50.02, which is ₹0.02 under target, and only if every test passes. The committed part, ₹19.62, gets you to ₹230.38 with little risk. Plan for the stretch, budget for some of it failing, and review the targets every month as tests report.
One line: a target is the gap to a real alternative, not a share of the rupees you want; add the gaps up first, and you will know whether ₹200.00 is a materials job or a design decision.
Test-size buys for the stretch targets: Woody Oud 100 g (₹453.12) covers six 16 g test candles; Eco Soy CSI 400 1 kg (₹399.00) covers three 184 g candles; Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm is ₹1,121.00 for 50. All in stock on 4 October 2026. Buy the kilos only after the tests pass.

The ₹250.00 BOM, ranked

A target set without the bill of materials is a wish with a number on it.

You gave two figures: ₹250.00 now and a ₹200.00 target, a ₹50.00 cut, 20.0% of the candle. The split below is illustrative: it sums to your ₹250.00, uses the series' default 200 g candle at a 9% load, and labels every unit price as the reader's own supplier's. It is not a CSI price list and not a claim that anyone's supplier is overpriced. Replace each line with yours.

Illustrative reader BOM · 200 g candle at 9% · ₹250.00
All unit prices are the reader's own supplier's (illustrative) · % rounded to one place, sums to 100.0% · materials only, excluding labour, freight, GST and marketing
Rank Line Quantity Unit price (reader's) ₹ per candle % of COGS Even split of ₹50.00

2 Soy wax 182 g ₹480.00 per kg ₹87.36 34.9% ₹17.47
3 Jar with lid 1 ₹33.00 ₹33.00 13.2% ₹6.60
4 Printed box 1 ₹30.00 ₹30.00 12.0% ₹6.00
5 Wick 1 ₹6.00 ₹6.00 2.4% ₹1.20
6 Label + dye 1 set ₹3.64 ₹3.64 1.5% ₹0.73
Total 200 g — ₹250.00 100.0% ₹50.00

Fragrance and wax hold 70.9% of this candle; the jar and box most of the rest. The last column is the trap: an even split by share. It looks fair and it is wrong, because it asks each line for money in proportion to its size, not to what a real alternative can take out of it. The next section prices those alternatives. If your own BOM is not built yet, the full BOM audit is the method; whether your ₹250.00 is per poured or per saleable candle is the true-cost post.

Each line's achievable gap, at real prices

The question for each line is not "how much do I want?" but "what is the best real alternative, and what would it take to prove it?"

Each lever below is priced on the candle as it stands after the lever before it, so nothing is counted twice. The fragrance load comes first because it changes the grams on two lines.

Fragrance: two levers, one of them a different scent

Lever A cuts the load from 9% to 8% of total weight: 18 g of oil becomes 16 g, worth ₹10.00 at ₹5,000.00 a kilo; the fill stays 200 g, so ₹0.96 of wax replaces it. Net ₹9.04 a candle, if a blind burn test shows 8% throws as well. Some oils need the higher load and some do not; only your test knows. How to find the lowest load that still throws is the lowest effective load post. Lever B prices a same-family oil: 16 g of Woody Oud at ₹4.53 a gram is ₹72.50 against ₹80.00, ₹7.50 less. That is a scent change, not a purchase: comparing two oils at different prices and loads is the ₹5,000 vs ₹3,500 per kilo fragrance post, and the retests a supplier switch needs are the fragrance-switch test list.

Wax: the biggest single gap, and the riskiest

After lever A the candle carries 184 g of wax at ₹480.00 a kilo: ₹88.32. Two CSI soy waxes cost less. Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399.00 a kilo gives ₹73.42, ₹14.90 a candle. Natural Soy Pearl at ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg gives ₹78.16, ₹10.16 a candle, but its page describes a pearlescent shimmer, so it changes the look. Two more do not help this reader at all: CSI 464 would add ₹5.04 a candle, the 10 kg Chunks ₹22.06. Any wax change reopens wick, throw, finish, adhesion and cure, which is why lever C is stretch. The change-control maths of a cheaper wax is the cheaper-wax revalidation post.

Mistake: handing the wax line the even-split target of ₹17.47 because it is a third of the cost. Why it fails: the best soy wax we sell takes only ₹13.94 out of this line, including the extra 2 g the load step adds. Chasing the rest means a wax you would not want to test, a smaller fill, or a load cut beyond what your test proved. Fix: set the wax target at the gap, and move the shortfall to a line that has room, here the jar.

Jar and box: smaller lines, real room

The jar is only 13.2% of this candle, so an even split asks it for ₹6.60. But its gap is bigger: your supplier's next tier of the same jar (₹30.00, a worked quote) is a low-risk ₹3.00; a lighter jar of the same capacity (₹22.00, a worked quote) is ₹11.00, and visible. CSI cannot help with this jar: our 200 ml jars hold less than 200 g of wax, and the in-stock CSI jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00. For a smaller, cheaper line, the clear 200ml Salsa at ₹29.50 a jar in 50s is the cheapest same-capacity glass we list; what a jar change must retest is the jar-change retest post. The box gives ₹7.58 by swapping a ₹30.00 printed box for our kraft Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm at ₹22.42: visible, quick to test, and only if your jar fits.

Lines with no target are a result, not a failure
The wick (2.4%) and label (1.5%) get no target. Our C1 would save ₹0.10 on a ₹6.00 wick; our C2 costs ₹3.44 more. A three-candle burn test costs more than a year of that saving at modest volume, and a smaller wick is a safety question. Writing "no target" against a line is how you stop someone in purchasing finding one anyway.

The target table: committed and stretch

Savings targets per component · illustrative ₹250.00 candle → below ₹200.00

Total ₹250.00 ₹199.98 ₹50.02 ₹19.62 ₹30.40 all pass: 5.4% ₹29.39

Read the table three ways. Line targets tell each owner what their line must fall by: fragrance ₹17.50, wax ₹13.94, jar ₹11.00, box ₹7.58. Committed targets (₹19.62) are what you promise yourself: ₹230.38 by the end of the first month of tests. Stretch targets (₹30.40) are what gets you under ₹200.00, at ₹199.98, and only if a different oil, a different wax and a lighter jar all pass. If the six levers were independent, the chance of all of them passing on these judgement probabilities is about 5.4%; the expected saving is ₹29.39, a candle near ₹220.61.

Argued against our own interest: two of the three stretch levers are CSI products (Woody Oud and Eco Soy CSI 400), and we still label them stretch. A cheaper oil that your customers can smell is different is not a saving, and a cheaper wax that frosts, tunnels or needs a new wick costs more than it saves. If your blind panel or your burn test says no, the target moves to another candidate or to a price decision; it does not move to a lower load than your test proved.

If ₹200.00 must be met with certainty, the honest options are outside materials: a price change (negotiate, reformulate or raise price), a smaller fill on a new SKU, or a deliberate jar tier change tested on buyers. How 10% and 20% COGS cuts are planned with the protection checklist for each attribute is the 10–20% COGS post; whether one big saving or several small ones is the better bet is the one-versus-several post.

Test-gated timeline, tests and payback

Targets have dates. Tests decide whether the dates hold.
1
Week 0 · freeze the control and write the targetsRecord today's BOM, lots and load; keep two retained candles. Enter each line target, its lever and its test in one sheet. Ask your jar supplier for the next-tier quote (D1).
2
Weeks 1–3 · lever A, the load ladderNine candles: three each at 9%, 8% and 7% in your oil, wax and jar (144 g of oil). Cure, judge blind at day 7 and 14, burn to the end. Pass at 8% books ₹9.04.
3
Weeks 1–3 · lever E, the boxSix candles in the kraft box by your usual courier; count breakage and ask the recipients how it looked. Pass books ₹7.58.
4
Weeks 4–8 · lever B, the oilOnly after A: three control candles in your oil, three in Woody Oud, both at the approved load. Blind panel for scent and throw, then a full burn. Pass books ₹7.50.
5
Weeks 6–12 · lever C, the waxOnly after A and B are settled: three control candles and three in Eco Soy CSI 400 at the approved load and oil. Full-life burns, finish and adhesion checked. Pass books ₹14.90.
6
Weeks 8–20 · lever D2, the lighter jarA wick and heat bracket in the new jar, then a perception test with real buyers before any switch. Pass books the extra ₹8.00 over D1.

E · kraft box 6 boxes + 6 × ₹80.00 courier ₹614.52 ₹7.58
All five ₹10,682.28 ₹50.02

At 500 candles a month the full plan is worth ₹3,00,120.00 a year; the committed part ₹1,17,720.00; the risk-adjusted expectation ₹1,76,340.00. All five tests pay back in about 0.43 months if they pass, 0.73 months against the risk-adjusted saving; the committed tests (A and E) pay back in about 0.34 months. At 2,000 candles a month the full plan is worth ₹12,00,480.00. Every test candle is costed at full material price; the perception test for D2 is extra, and the validation-depth post sets how deep each kind of change must be tested.

Do not run the levers in one trial
A, then B, then C, one at a time, each against a control. If you change the load, the oil and the wax together and the throw drops, you cannot tell which to undo, and you lose all three savings. The trial discipline is the one-change-at-a-time post; the record for each change is the one-page change-control form.

Keeping the targets honest every month

A target that is not reviewed becomes a number someone hits by cutting the wrong thing.

Target costing fails in small businesses for one reason: the target outlives the facts. A test fails, a price moves, and the rupees get found somewhere unsafe. A monthly loop prevents that.

The monthly target review · one sheet, five columns
Run it on the same day each month · live prices, not last quarter's
Column What you write Rule
Line and target e.g. wax, ₹13.94 Targets change only at this review
Live price This month's landed price per kg, per jar, per box Re-price the whole BOM, not just the line under test
Test status Not started / in cure / burning / passed / failed Only "passed" books a saving
Booked vs target Rupees booked per candle against the line target Book on saleable candles, after rejects
Reallocation Where a failed lever's rupees go next Never to a lower load than tested, a smaller wick, or less protection

Booked savings belong in a versioned BOM, v1 against v2, with yields and rejects; that proof is the before-and-after BOM post. Turning the monthly review into a standing system with a test queue and approval gates is the continuous cost-optimisation system. And once the formula is settled, the purchasing side of the cluster begins: which supplier price to renegotiate first as volume grows is the 500 to 5,000 a month post.

What to buy for the tests, and what to skip

Lever B prices a 16 g dose of this oil against the illustrative reader's ₹5,000.00-a-kilo oud: ₹72.50 against ₹80.00, ₹7.50 a candle. The page describes "citrus and spice top notes opening into rich oud and patchouli heart, settling into warm woody notes, amber, and musk", states "candles (6-10%)" and says "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing". Every size is in stock on 4 October 2026. Limitation: it is a different oil, so the saving exists only if a blind panel cannot tell, or prefers it; buy the 100 g for the test, not the kilo.

Eco Soy CSI 400
The wax behind the largest single line target: 184 g costs ₹73.42 against ₹88.32 for the illustrative ₹480.00 wax, ₹14.90 a candle. The page says "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly", "Recommended Wick Eco Wicks" and "Appearance Creamy White"; in the text we captured it states no load ceiling, so your burn test sets the limit. Limitation: a new wax reopens wick, throw, finish and adhesion; it is a stretch target until a full-life test passes. The 5 kg is ₹1.00 dearer than five 1 kg bags.

On 184 g that is ₹78.16, a ₹10.16 saving on the illustrative wax. The page describes "a beautiful pearlescent shimmer", so it changes how the candle looks; and it states no load ceiling in the text we captured. Test it as a visible change, not an invisible one.

Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464
In the text we captured the page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and a pour temperature of 80–90°C. It is CSI's reference container wax in this series. Argued against our own interest: at ₹93.36 a candle it costs ₹5.04 more than the illustrative reader's ₹480.00 wax, and it is flat per kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg, so no pack size changes that. If your wax costs less than ours and burns well, the wax target comes from a different wax or not at all.

Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging (11 x 11 x 8 cm)
Lever E replaces the ₹30.00 printed box with this kraft box at ₹22.42: ₹7.58 a candle, flat in 50s and 100s. The page calls them "extra small cardboard shipper boxes" with "self-locking tabs", "Size: 11 x 11 x 8 cm", without saying inside or outside. Two honest limits: many 200 g jars with a lid stand taller than 8 cm, so measure before you buy; and a plain box is a visible change, which is why lever E has a drop test and buyer feedback.

wick · why the wick line gets no target
Eco Candle Wicks — Thick (C2) and Thin (C1)
The illustrative reader pays ₹6.00 a wick. Our C1 at ₹5.90 would save ₹0.10, which no burn test is worth; our C2 at ₹9.44 costs ₹3.44 more. Every C1 and C2 pack is flat per wick, so no pack size changes it. Argued against our own interest: keep the wick your test approved. A wick target only appears when a burn test says the candle needs a different wick anyway.
Pack Price Per wick vs your ₹6.00 wick
Thick (C2) / 10 · 100 · 1000 ₹94.40 · ₹944.00 · ₹9,440.00 ₹9.44 ₹3.44 more
Thin (C1) / 10 ₹59.00 — Out of stock ₹5.90 Out of stock on 4 October 2026
Thin (C1) / 20 · 100 · 1000 ₹118.00 · ₹590.00 · ₹5,900.00 ₹5.90 ₹0.10 less
₹5.90 and ₹9.44 a wick from 10 to 1,000. Buy C2 10 — ₹94.40

Skip for this plan: 1 kg bottles before lever B passes (the 100 g is the same ₹4.53 a gram), 5 kg or 10 kg wax before lever C passes, and any wick change for money. Bigger packs of flat-priced items buy stock, not savings.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 35 days from 4 October 2026. Levers A and E can report before it; B, C and D2 cannot. Sell Diwali on the candle you trust, with the committed savings if they have passed, and run the stretch tests after. When a lever passes, send us the quantities and we will quote with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

Map of this cluster: 6081–6100

This hub owns the target-setting method and the ₹250.00 → ₹200.00 allocation. The cluster then turns to profit and purchasing: how savings add up, which supplier terms to work on, how to switch safely, and how to keep the system running. One line per post:

Cluster map · 6082–6100
Choosing savings (6082–6083) · negotiating (6084–6086) · switching and supply risk (6087–6092) · which SKU (6093–6095) · trial and proof (6096–6100)
No. What the post answers (linked)
6082 One ₹50 saving or several smaller ones: expected value, test cost and visibility compared.
6083 ₹8 + ₹12 + ₹20 + ₹10 at 1,000 units: the gross-profit arithmetic, and the risk-adjusted version.
6084 Scaling 500 → 5,000 a month: which material to renegotiate first, by monthly rupee spend.
6085 The monthly consumption at which asking wax and fragrance suppliers for volume pricing makes sense.
6086 Per-order price breaks or a committed monthly volume: which commercial terms to negotiate.
6087 A new supplier 15% cheaper: annual saving against testing and switching costs.
6088 A reliable but dearer supplier: how much cheaper another must be before you switch.
6089 Two approved suppliers for critical materials, even if the backup costs more.
6090 A cheap supplier that runs out: the rupee cost of production delays.
6091 A better price with a much larger MOQ: unit saving against cash locked in stock.
6092 Saving ₹1 lakh a year by buying bigger: is the inventory risk acceptable?
6093 A ₹15 saving on a bestseller or ₹50 on a slow seller: which first.
6094 Ranking SKUs by annual saving opportunity, not by which has the highest COGS.
6095 Good sales, thin margin: negotiate, reformulate or raise the price.
6096 Running a cost-down trial without changing several materials at once.
6097 Does every cost change need the full validation of a new candle? A risk-tiered rule.
6098 The before-and-after BOM that proves a cheaper formula saved money after rejects and labour.
6099 Cutting COGS 10–20% while keeping throw, burn, appearance and perceived value.
6100 The continuous cost-optimisation system: BOM, test, buy, measure, repeat.
The CSI principle
Set each target at a real gap. Commit to the safe part. Let tests, not hopes, move the rest.
On the illustrative ₹250.00 candle the gaps add to ₹50.02; the committed part takes it to ₹230.38, and below ₹200.00 only if a different oil, wax and jar all pass.
"Add the gaps up before you start. If they do not reach your target, no supplier can sell you the difference."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, waxes, wicks and boxes named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our CSI 464 and Chunks waxes cost more than the illustrative reader's, that our wicks offer no worthwhile saving, that we have no cheaper 200 g jar, and that our cheapest oil and wax are stretch targets until your tests pass.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, per size. The Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged where it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (load ceilings for Eco Soy CSI 400 and Natural Soy Pearl, box inside dimensions), we say so.

The reader's six-line split, the 9% starting load, the jar quotes, the success probabilities, 500 candles a month, ₹150.00 an hour and the courier rate are labelled worked examples or judgement; which load, oil, wax and jar pass is your tests' answer, not ours. This is practical business judgement, not financial, tax or legal advice. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do you set a target cost for each component of a product?
Start from the target total, list each line and its share, then set each line's target at the gap to its best real alternative, not at its share of the cut. On an illustrative ₹250.00 candle that gives fragrance ₹17.50, wax ₹13.94, jar ₹11.00, box ₹7.58 and no target on wick or label.
Should I cut every candle ingredient by the same percentage?
No. An even split asks big lines for more than a real alternative can give (wax here: asked ₹17.47, gap ₹13.94) and asks small lines, like the wick, for savings no burn test is worth.
Can I reduce candle COGS from ₹250.00 to ₹200.00 with cheaper raw materials alone?
On the illustrative split, only just: every lever passing gives ₹199.98. The low-risk part reaches ₹230.38; the risk-adjusted expectation is about ₹220.61. Plan a price or design decision in case the stretch tests fail.
Which candle cost should I reduce first?
The largest line the buyer cannot see, usually the fragrance load, tested blind (₹9.04 a candle here from 9% to 8%). Then low-risk visible lines like the box; different oils, waxes and jars come last because each is a new candle.
How long does it take to test a cheaper candle formula?
A load ladder or a box test takes about three weeks including cure and burns; an oil or wax switch takes four to eight weeks of full-life burning, one change at a time; a jar change with a buyer perception test can take three months or more.
What should I do if a cost-reduction test fails?
Book nothing, keep the current material, and move that line's target to the next real candidate at the monthly review, or to a price decision. Never make up the gap with a lower load than tested, a smaller wick or less packaging protection.
₹250.00 to below ₹200.00
Set every target at a real gap, commit to the safe part, and let the tests move the rest.
On the illustrative split, committed targets take the candle to ₹230.38 and the full plan to ₹199.98. Send us your real six lines on WhatsApp and we will tell you which CSI materials would actually close a gap for you, and which would not.

About this guide: the hub page for CSI's cluster on profit engineering and supplier switching (6081–6100), part of the series on candle cost reduction and raw-material optimisation. It sets per-component savings targets for a ₹250.00 candle aiming below ₹200.00: an illustrative ranked BOM, the achievable gap per lever at real prices, committed and stretch targets with labelled probabilities, a test-gated timeline with costs and payback, a monthly governance loop, and a map of the cluster.

Non-price figures: the reader's ₹250.00 and ₹200.00 are the reader's own figures; the six-line split (fragrance at ₹5,000.00 per kg, wax at ₹480.00 per kg, jar ₹33.00, printed box ₹30.00, wick ₹6.00, label and dye ₹3.64), the 9% starting load and the jar quotes (₹30.00 tier, ₹22.00 lighter jar) are illustrative, not CSI prices and not claims about any supplier. Load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 9% = 18 g oil + 182 g wax; at 8% = 16 g + 184 g). Success probabilities (60%, 50%, 50%, 90%, 50%, 80%) are labelled judgement for ranking, not data. 500 candles a month, ₹150.00 an hour and ₹80.00 a test parcel are worked examples. Costs are materials only and exclude labour (except in test costs), freight, GST and marketing. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
