What Fragrance Oils Should I Buy for Better Compatibility With Soy Wax?

Three levels of page evidence, and which to buy on

When makers ask which oils are "compatible" with soy, they mean an oil that stays in the wax: no film, no wet patches, no beads after a week. That depends on formulation, wax, load, add temperature, stirring and cooling. A product page can speak to only some of it; what it can tell you is whether a load for soy has been stated. We sorted all 102 CSI oil pages by what they state, as captured on 25 September 2026.

Level 1 is not a certificate: "up to 10% for soy wax" gives the intended ceiling, not a promise about your wax, temperatures and stirring. Level 3 is not a warning either; many oils sold without a candle load work well in soy. Buy level 1 first for a practical reason: when it misbehaves, you know the load it was written for and can tell whether you exceeded it.

Some pages add wax-compatibility wording on top of the load. Jasmine and Sandalwood say "Compatible with soy, paraffin, coconut, and blended waxes"; Sage and Cedarwood, Verbena, Ylang Ylang Flower and Cinnamon say "Works well with soy, paraffin, coconut" (their wording continues). That is the page's claim, useful and worth reading, but still a claim. The buy list: 26 oils whose pages state a soy load

The table quotes each page's load wording exactly, because the words matter: "up to 10%" is a ceiling only, "6-10%" gives a floor too, and "8–10%" says where the page expects the oil to start. Marketing adjectives in the wording ("High throw", "Extremely strong hot throw") are the pages' claims; CSI has not measured throw for any oil, and they play no part in this list. Buy the 50 g; the 1 kg column shows whether scaling up saves money later.

How to read the list

Florals are the deepest column: five oils, three of them white florals. Gardenia's page adds "Vanillin content 0.2% - minimal discoloration risk", useful if your jars are clear and your wax is white. Woods and resins give four; Vetiver's 1 kg is out of stock on 25 September 2026, so sample it only if a 500 g reorder would cover you. Fresh and citrus has five, including Citronella, a scent listing only; this page makes no claim about insects. Gourmand and spice has five; Vanilla Bean's page states "Vanillin Content: 2.5% (Potential discoloration; test with lighter waxes or consider adding color stabiliz[ers])" and CSI does not currently list a colour stabiliser. Fruity has four, all with ranges that begin at 8%.

Brand-named listings. Three of the 26 are listings CSI names after a third-party brand, listed in full as "Forever Red Bath and Body Works Inspired Fragrance Oil", "Mahogany Teakwood Bath and Body Works Inspired Fragrance Oil" and "Dahlia Bath and Body Works Inspired Fragrance Oil". CSI is not affiliated with that brand, the oils are CSI's interpretations, and you should not put the brand name on your own labels. They appear here because their pages state soy loads, not as a recommendation. Dahlia is in stock only at 50 g.

What a stated soy load means in each CSI soy wax

An oil page's soy load is written for soy in general. Your candle is made in one specific wax, and the wax page may set a lower ceiling. The rule is simple: the lower of the two governs. These are formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and the maximum is not the best load. Test below it.

Two things follow. First, a 13% wax does not make a 10% oil a 13% oil; the oil page still caps it. Second, where a wax page states no ceiling, do not borrow one from another wax. Work to the oil page and ask the wax seller (for CSI waxes, that is us, on WhatsApp). Temperatures follow the same logic: add and pour at the figures on your wax page, and where a page is silent, ask rather than copy another wax's numbers. The five-family sample route and its six-candle screen

A range is built family by family, so the first order should be too: one 50 g bottle from each of five columns. The screen below is a shortlisting tool, not a full compatibility test; it tells you which of the five to take forward. Why an unscented control candle

Soy wax can show surface effects on its own: frosting, a patchy finish, wet-looking spots where it has pulled from the glass, all regularly blamed on the oil. One 150 g candle with no oil, from the same melt, jar, wick and cooling spot, shows what the wax does by itself. If it has wet spots too, no oil on this list will cure them.

Day 0 uses 840 g of wax, six jars and six wicks. Retests, if every oil except the control needs one, use up to five more jars and 702 g of wax (four 6% retests and one 8% Wild Berries repeat). Oil: 12 g of each for the screen and 9 g for a 6% retest leaves 29 g of each 50 g bottle (26 g of Wild Berries after its 12 g repeat), enough for two more 8% candles when you move on to hot throw.

Screen plus every retest, 11 candles in all, consumes ₹2,462.03 of materials. New cash depends on what you own: with wax and jars already on the shelf, the five oils and a pack of 20 C1 wicks come to ₹1,447.48. Starting from nothing, five oils plus a pack of 20 jars (₹1,888.00, ₹94.40 each), a pack of 20 C1 wicks and 5 kg of CSI 464 (₹2,537.00) is ₹5,872.48, and most of that wax and glass carries on into production.

The five samples we would start with

One per family, chosen on four stated grounds: a soy load stated on the page, every size in stock on 25 September 2026, notes structured enough to tell the families apart in a blind sniff, and a 50 g price that keeps the set under ₹1,593.00, the price of one 500 g British Rose. None is chosen for throw; CSI has no measured throw data. Swap any pick for another oil in the same column of the grid if the character suits your range better; the screen works the same way.

Oils off the list: when to buy them anyway

A maker building a range will want scents the list does not cover: Lavender, Woody Oud, Roasted Coffee, Gilli Mitti, the premium ouds. Level-2 oils state a candle load without naming a wax, and most of them state 6-10%, the same range as the level-1 oils. Buy those on the same terms: 50 g, the six-candle screen, the lower of two ceilings. Three level-2 pages state a top figure above CSI 464's 10%: Japanese Cherry Blossom ("6-13% for candles"), Cinnamon Vanilla ("Up to 13% load for candles") and Autumn ("7-11%"). In CSI 464 all three are 10% oils; in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 468 the ceiling is 13% on paper, and the best load is still well below it.

Level-3 oils need one question first. Several are perfume-grade listings whose pages quote 15%, 20% or 25% usage rates; those are perfume rates, not candle loads, and have nothing to say about soy. They also tend to cost more per gram: on 25 September 2026 the 50 g sizes across CSI's in-stock oils ran from ₹3.40 per gram (Citrus Lemon) to ₹24.06 (a perfume-grade listing). From samples to Diwali stock, 8 November 2026

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 44 days after these prices were checked. The screen takes seven days and production needs its own cure, so only the sample order can be hurried. Confirm dispatch time on WhatsApp before you promise a customer a date.

Worked example: 41 British Rose candles at 8% (500 g of oil, ₹1,593.00) with CSI 464 (₹2,870.87), 150 g clear jars and C1 wicks come to ₹8,576.17, ₹209.17 per candle, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST. At the 500 g price, oil per 8% candle is ₹38.23 for British Rose, ₹56.92 for Apple Cinnamon, ₹65.23 for Bergamot Amber, ₹71.98 for Wild Berries and ₹72.22 for Palo Santo.
