Where to Source Fragrance Oil for Monthly Candle Production

Start from the production plan

The question "where should I source fragrance oil" usually hides a second question: "how much of each should I buy?" Until the second is answered, the first cannot be. A monthly production plan answers it. It lists each scent, the number of candles you will pour in it this month, and the candle size. From that, every quantity follows: oil per candle is candle weight times load, wax is the rest, and one wick and one jar go into each candle. Add an allowance for pour loss and test burns and you have the month's bill of materials, which is the real thing you are sourcing.

This page uses one worked plan throughout. A maker pours 240 candles of 180 g a month at an 8% fragrance load, so each candle holds 14.4 g of oil and 165.6 g of wax. The range is four scents with very different volumes: a main seller at 100 candles, a steady seller at 70, and two smaller lines at 40 and 30. A sourcing route for every scent

Once each scent has a monthly gram figure, it falls into one of five bands, and each band has a natural route. The table sets them out. The thresholds are this page's working rules, chosen around CSI's listed pack sizes; they are not supplier rules, and a business with more storage or less cash might shift them.

Two features of CSI's catalogue shape these routes. First, most oils are priced flat per gram from 100 g to 1 kg: for 52 of 91 oils the 1 kg is within 1% of the 100 g. For those oils, the band only changes how many bottles you open, not what each candle costs. Second, 24 oils have a real kilo saving of 5% or more, and for those the route matters to your margin. Four scents, four routes

Here is the worked plan routed band by band. Each line is bought as the cheapest combination of in-stock 1 kg, 500 g and 100 g packs that covers the grams needed, on the prices pulled on 24 September 2026.

Compare that with the lazy route of buying whole kilos of everything. Rounding each scent up to kilos would cost ₹23,923.80, ₹8,697.20 more, and would leave nearly 2.4 kg of oil on the shelf at month end. Some of that would be used next month, so it is not all waste, but it is cash sitting in bottles. The routed order leaves only 106 g over across four scents.

Look at Roasted Coconut. It lists a 1 kg at ₹3,999.00 (₹4.00 a gram) and a 100 g at ₹495.00 (₹4.95 a gram), but no 500 g. At 449.3 g a month, five 100 g packs cost ₹2,475.00, which is less than the kilo even though the kilo is 19.2% cheaper per gram. If the line grows past about 800 g a month, the kilo takes over: eight 100 g bottles cost ₹3,960.00, just under the kilo, and nine cost ₹4,455.00, just over it. The full monthly bill of materials

Here is the rest of the worked month. Wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, rated up to 13% fragrance load, which is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum and comfortably above the 8% used here. The plan needs 41.33 kg with the 4% allowance. Bought as 9 bags of 5 kg it costs ₹26,955.00. Bought as 4 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg it would cost ₹26,991.00, because the 10 kg bag works out at ₹599.90 a kilo against ₹599.00 for the 5 kg. The difference is small, but it runs the opposite way to what most buyers assume.

Wicks are Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, which cost ₹12.00 each at every pack size, so the plan buys exactly 250 (two packs of 100 and one of 50) for ₹3,000.00 rather than a 500-pack. Check the wick against your jar diameter with a test burn; the right wick matters more than its price. Jars are White Matte Glass Jars at ₹354.00 for five, 48 packs for 240 candles. On this plan fragrance is 24.4% of the month's material spend, jars are 27.2% and wax 43.2%. The per-candle figure excludes labour, packaging, labels, freight and GST, which you add from your own costs. Packaging and labels are not raw materials CSI lists, so they are sourced elsewhere. What the store cannot tell you

A product page shows price, size and stock. It does not show how long an order takes to reach your workshop, what payment terms apply, whether a larger order would be priced differently, or when an out-of-stock size will return. Material cost per candle comes to ₹259.94, of which ₹63.44 is fragrance on average. Next month's list will differ in the oil lines as each scent's volume moves, and may drop the wax, wicks or jars if you buy those on a slower cycle.
