What small-business volumes look like

Start from the candles, not the oil. Oil used in a month is the weight of candles you pour × your fragrance load. At 8%, every kilo of finished candles holds 80 g of oil. The table below runs four common monthly volumes, from a home business pouring 25 candles a month to a small workshop pouring 250. It assumes 200 g candles and four scents sharing the volume equally.

Two things follow. First, below about 10 kg of candles a month, the 100 g is your production size, and for most oils it is already the bulk price per gram. A 1 kg would last a single scent ten months at 5 kg of candles. Second, at 20 to 50 kg a month, you use 400 g to 1 kg per scent, and the 500 g and 1 kg become the natural sizes. The 24 oils where bulk pays

These are every oil whose 1 kg is at least 5% cheaper per gram than its 100 g, largest saving first. The "10 × 100 g vs 1 kg" column is what you save on a kilo of oil by buying the kilo pack instead of ten 100 g bottles. The last column says where the saving starts. For some oils the 500 g already has the low price; for others only the kilo drops; for a few, the kilo or the 100 g is out of stock today.

Read the last column before you order. For Honeydew Melon, Mango Coconut, Lemongrass and Lime, Fallen Leaves, Jasmine and several others, the 500 g already has the kilo's price per gram, so a small business gets the full bulk saving with half the stock. For Cinnamon, Pumpkin Spice and Forever Red (BBW Inspired), the 500 g costs the same per gram as the 100 g and only the kilo drops, so the choice is 100 g or 1 kg. Roasted Coconut lists no 500 g at all. Five of the 24, including Vetiver, Sacred Sandal Ember and Freshwater (BBW Inspired), cannot be bought at the kilo, or at 100 g, on the pull date.

A worked month at 20 kg

A small business pours 20 kg of candles a month: 100 candles of 200 g, 1.6 kg of oil at 8%, 400 g per scent across four scents. The tables price one month of oil used, bought as 100 g bottles or as 500 g packs. The 500 g route leaves 100 g of each oil over each month, which carries into the next; the figures are the cost of the 400 g actually used.

Range A saves ₹1,265.52 a month, ₹15,186.24 a year, from nothing more than choosing the 500 g. That is ₹12.66 a candle. Range B saves ₹64.00 a month, all of it on Lavender, and the other three oils cost exactly the same either way. The volume and the effort are identical. The oils are what differ. The cash picture differs too: Range A's first month in 500 g packs costs ₹8,405.20 up front, against ₹7,989.68 of oil used, because the extra 100 g of each sits on the shelf for the following month.

Two kilos of oil cover 125 candles; this month uses 1.6 kg for 100 and carries 400 g, 100 g of each scent, into next month. Twenty kilos of Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹424.80 a kilo cover the 18.4 kg the month needs with 1.6 kg over for pour loss and test burns.
