Can I Use the Same Reed Diffuser Base for Lavender, Jasmine, Vanilla and Coffee Fragrance Oils, or Does Each Formula Need Separate Testing?
Aktie
Does each formula need separate testing? Yes. Every oil–base pair is a separate formula. A pass with lavender says nothing about vanilla or coffee.
Which base do the CSI pages name for each oil? Softness names lavender, jasmine and vanilla milk; Lift names jasmine; Depth names coffee and spiced vanilla. Positioning, not proof.
What does the first test cost? ₹3,113.48 in CSI materials for all four oils in one base, ten 50 ml bottles and white reeds. See the kit.
One base can work for all four — but each oil is its own formula
Your question has two halves, and they have different answers. Can one reed diffuser base carry lavender, jasmine, vanilla and coffee? Very possibly — that is what a neutral base is for, and Pure Performance Base's page describes itself as suitable for all fragrance families, with "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements". Does each formula need separate testing? Always. A fragrance oil is a mixture of many materials, and each of your four is a different mixture. When you put lavender in a base you have made one formula; vanilla in the same base is a second formula, with its own chance of hazing, layering, darkening or travelling slowly up the reeds. A clean result with one oil tells you nothing about another.
The four oils you have named also sit in different families on CSI's own base pages, which is a hint that the makers expect them to behave differently. Softness Base's page names lavender and jasmine among soft florals, and "vanilla milk" among light gourmands. Lift Base's page names jasmine among its florals. Depth Base's page names coffee and "spiced vanilla" among rich gourmands and says it "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils". So on paper, a family-matched range would use up to three bases, and a single-base range would use Pure Performance for everything. Neither choice is proven by the pages; both are hypotheses to test.
The practical answer is a two-stage plan. Stage A: put all four oils in one neutral base, each at the same load, and test every pair for clarity and diffusion. Stage B: only for an oil that fails in Stage A, test it in the base its family page names, against a fresh Stage A control. If all four pass in Stage A, you have a one-base range — simpler to buy, store and reorder. If one or two fail, you add a base only for those. This page prices Stage A in one pack of ten 50 ml bottles, shows the per-bottle cost of each oil, and works out what running one base versus four does to your stock.
| Your oil | Pages that name its family | Neutral option | Smallest CSI oil size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | Softness — names lavender | Pure Performance Base | 15 g · ₹105.02 |
| Jasmine | Lift (names jasmine) or Softness (names jasmine) | Pure Performance Base | 15 g · ₹103.00 |
| Vanilla Bean | Softness ("vanilla milk") or Depth ("spiced vanilla") | Pure Performance Base | 15 g · ₹130.00 |
| Roasted Coffee | Depth — names coffee | Pure Performance Base | 15 g · ₹93.22 |
Why four oils behave like four different products
Lavender and jasmine are commonly described as floral profiles built around lighter, more volatile materials; they tend to open quickly and are rarely the ones that misbehave on clarity. Vanilla-type oils are commonly described as containing sweeter, heavier materials, and vanilla is the family most often reported in candles and diffusers to darken over time and to thicken a blend; a vanilla formula that clogs fibre reeds faster than lemon deals with that pattern directly. Coffee and other roasted gourmands are commonly described as rich, dark and sometimes viscous. None of that is a statement about CSI's particular oils — CSI publishes no composition, vanillin content or diffuser behaviour for any oil — but it is why a single base can pass with three and struggle with the fourth.
The load matters for the same reason. The base pages give a 10–30% range, with 20% recommended on Pure Performance. Running all four oils at one load is a sensible starting point because it keeps the test fair, and it keeps your production sheet simple. But a heavier oil that hazes at 20% may be clear at 15%, and a light floral that is faint at 20% may need 25% — within the base's 30% and within the oil's own IFRA limit for the category that covers reed diffusers, whichever is lower. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for each oil's IFRA certificate; CSI publishes no IFRA limit on its pages. Standardise one load or optimise each SKU? argues that question in full, and lavender works at 20% but vanilla separates handles the most common split.
| Property | Why it can differ by oil | How you see it | Checked in this test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity | Some materials dissolve less readily in a given carrier | Haze, droplets, a layer at the bottom | 0 h, 48 h, 7 days, after a cool night |
| Colour over time | Some sweet materials are commonly reported to darken | Blend or reed tips turn amber or brown | Photographs at 7 and 14 days |
| Speed up the reeds | Thicker blends are commonly described as climbing more slowly | Tips still dry hours after insertion | Note the time tips look wet |
| Release into the room | Volatility differs between materials | Different g/day and room scores at the same load | Weights and blind scores, days 1–14 |
Stage A: four oils in one base, in one pack of bottles
Eight bottles test the four oils twice each; the other two bottles in the pack are the base-only blank and a spare. Every bottle holds an example fill of 42 g — the 50 ml bottle's fill line is not published, so choose yours and mark it — at 20% by weight: 8.4 g of oil and 33.6 g of base. Each oil gets 17.64 g with a 5% working allowance, which is more than one 15 g bottle, so the kit buys the cheapest combination of listed sizes for each.
| Bottles | Oil | Base | Per bottle | Reeds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L1–L2 | Lavender | Pure Performance Base | 8.4 g + 33.6 g | 6 |

Two bottles per oil is a screen, a labelled working practice, not a verdict; it is enough to catch a blend that clouds or a room score that is clearly weak. An oil passes Stage A only if both its bottles are clear at every check and both reach your house pass score on day 7. For the decision to launch, repeat the passing oils with more bottles and a longer run — the 30-day performance test sets that out, and comparing two bases on five criteria gives you a weighted scorecard if two bases are close.
Stage B: only for the oil that fails
If an oil fails Stage A, test it in the base its family page names, beside a fresh Stage A control — two bottles each, same oil, same load, same reeds. For vanilla, the pages offer two routes: Softness for a light "vanilla milk" style, Depth for a richer "spiced vanilla"; pick the one closer to your oil's character, or test both if the first fails. For coffee, Depth is the page's choice. Each Stage B base is a 500 ml at ₹1,099.00, so a failed oil costs one base bottle, a fresh 100 g of Pure Performance for the control bottles (₹325.00 — Stage A leaves too little over), and about ₹390.00 of fresh vanilla or ₹230.00 of fresh coffee to re-run. Before you go to Stage B, try the cheaper fix the Longevity page itself gives for clouding: step the load down five points in the base you already have, and re-check.
| Oil fails in Stage A | Cheapest next step | Then test in | Extra CSI cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | Step down to 15% in Pure Performance | Softness Base | ₹1,099.00 + ₹270.00 oil + ₹325.00 control base |
| Jasmine | Step down to 15% in Pure Performance | Lift Base (or Softness Base) | ₹1,099.00 + ₹230.00 oil + ₹325.00 control base |
| Vanilla Bean | Step down to 15% in Pure Performance | Softness Base or Depth Base | ₹1,099.00 + ₹390.00 oil + ₹325.00 control base |
| Roasted Coffee | Step down to 15% in Pure Performance | Depth Base | ₹1,099.00 + ₹230.00 oil + ₹325.00 control base |
One base or four: what it does to cost and stock
Here is a fact that makes the decision easier: Pure Performance (500 ml), Lift, Depth and Softness are all listed at the same ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml. Only Longevity Base is different, at ₹1,296.00. So within those four, choosing a family base over the neutral one does not change what a bottle costs. At an example density of 1.00 g per ml, the base is ₹2.20 a gram (₹2.09–₹2.31 at ±5%), and one 500 ml fills 14.9 bottles at 33.6 g each (14.1–15.6 across the density range).
| Oil | Oil ₹/g | Liquid per bottle | In Longevity instead | + 50 ml bottle and 6 white reeds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | ₹5.22 | ₹117.71 | ₹130.95 | ₹254.31 |
| Jasmine | ₹3.92 | ₹106.81 | ₹120.04 | ₹243.41 |
| Vanilla Bean | ₹7.65 | ₹138.08 | ₹151.32 | ₹274.68 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹3.74 | ₹105.25 | ₹118.49 | ₹241.85 |
So the real cost of a four-base range is not per bottle; it is stock and complexity. Holding one opened 500 ml of each base ties up ₹4,396.00 against ₹1,099.00 for one base, and every base is another line to reorder, another lot to record and another possible stock-out. For an example run of 40 bottles of each SKU, a one-base range needs 5,376 g of base — 11 × 500 ml (₹12,089.00) at the example density — while a four-base range needs 1,344 g of each base, 3 × 500 ml per base, or ₹13,188.00 in all, with more left over in each bottle. Neither number includes labels, boxes or labour. If one base passes for all four oils, that simplicity is worth having.
The priced Stage A kit
Listed, in-stock CSI packs only, with a 5% working allowance on liquids. The four oils each need 17.64 g, bought in the cheapest combination of their smallest sizes. Pure Performance needs 282.2 g: 3 × 100 g covers it for ₹975.00, less than one 500 ml.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle, 50 ml | 10 bottles | 1 × pack of 10 | ₹826.00 | You test in your own bottle (better) |
| Fiber Diffuser Reeds (White) | 8 × 6 = 48 (+ blank from spares) | 1 × pack of 50 | ₹450.00 | You hold reeds from one batch |
| Pure Performance Base | 282.2 g | 3 × 100 g | ₹975.00 | — |
| Lavender | 17.64 g | 2 × 15 g | ₹210.04 | You hold this oil |
| Jasmine | 17.64 g | 2 × 15 g | ₹206.00 | You hold this oil |
| Vanilla Bean | 17.64 g | 2 × 15 g | ₹260.00 | You hold this oil |
| Roasted Coffee | 17.64 g | 2 × 15 g | ₹186.44 | You hold this oil |
| Stage A, CSI materials | ₹3,113.48 | |||
| Weighing Scale | 1 | 1 | ₹354.00 | You own a scale |
| Stage A with scale | ₹3,467.48 |
The white reeds come as one 50-pack (₹450.00): 48 for the test bottles and two left, so the blank shares the spare reeds or takes reeds from the next pack. The base-only blank needs no extra purchase beyond those reeds — it comes out of the 300 g of Pure Performance. If you already hold any of these oils, drop their lines; the test is only as good as the oil you will actually sell, so test with the bottle you will reorder.
The decision rule
Apply it after Stage A's 7-day checkpoint, one oil at a time, stopping at the first true line for each.
| If this is true for the oil | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Both bottles clear at every check and pass on room score | Compatible in the one base | Keep it in Pure Performance — production in 500 ml (₹1,099.00) |
| Hazy or layered at 48 h or 7 days | Not compatible at this load | Step down 5 points in Pure Performance and re-check |
| Still hazy at the lower load | Not compatible in this base | Stage B in the family base its page names |
| Clear, but room score below your pass | Compatible, under-performing | Check reed count and load (within IFRA and 30%) before changing base |
| Clear, but reed tips dark and g/day falling by day 14 | Residue at the reeds | Note a reed-replacement interval; test the family base in Stage B |
| All four pass | A one-base range | Buy one base in 500 ml; write one specification per oil |
Whatever you decide, write a separate specification for each SKU — oil, base, load, reed count, fill weight, measured g/day, and the date of the passing test — even if all four share a base. When you reorder an oil, change its load or swap the base, that SKU's test starts again; the other three do not. If your range is going to grow to five or more fragrances, one compatible base in bulk or a base per family runs the purchasing side, a three-fragrance brand launch plans the first trial batch, and clarity tests before buying 5 kg goes deeper into the compatibility checks for a larger base order. The section's pillar is which reed diffuser base to buy in India, and its capstone is the commercial base selection framework.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. A base seller gains from selling a base per family. This page tests all four oils in one base first, points out that four of our five bases cost the same per 500 ml, prices the stock cost of holding four, and tells you to try a lower load before buying another base.
Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, base-pack count, per-bottle liquid cost, kit total and cost per day on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; density and grams-per-day figures are labelled examples, never CSI specifications.
Bottle counts per arm, the clarity checkpoints, the weighing schedule, the room-scoring scale and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 42 g fill, the 20% load, two bottles per oil, the cool-night check and the 40-bottle run are labelled examples you replace with your own. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Example fill 42 g per 50 ml bottle at 20% = 8.4 g oil + 33.6 g base. Example density 1.00 g per ml with ±5% sensitivity. Working practices: 2 bottles per oil, 1 base-only blank, 6 reeds, 5% liquid allowance, clarity at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night, weighing on days 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14, blind 0–5 scoring at 1 m and 3 m, two oils per scoring session. Labelled example: a 40-bottle run per SKU. Production-rate liquid costs use the ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml base rate and each oil's largest in-stock size. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, start at 10%, maximum 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours, flip reeds after the first hour; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", 10–30%, "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", allow 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families, 10–30%; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "slow diffusion", 10–30%; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand, 10–30%; all five say rest 24–48 hours and describe themselves as crystal clear. Fibre reed page: length 20.3 cm; 6–8 reeds for a standard 50–100 ml bottle, more for stronger and faster diffusion, fewer for subtler and longer-lasting. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point, shelf life or SDS figure for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; and no IFRA limit for any oil.
