Fragrance Oil Starter Pack for Candle Making

Why plan in candles, not bottles

Start with the fact: CSI does not sell a fragrance starter pack. There is no pre-packed set of oils for beginners, and no fragrance combo or sample pack. What CSI lists is 93 fragrance oils, 86 of them with some size in stock, each sold singly from 15 g upward. So a starter pack is something you assemble. That sounds like more work than buying a box, but it means the pack matches your first batch instead of a guess about it.

Twenty candles is a good first batch. It is enough to try several scents properly and to hand candles to people who will tell you the truth about them. It is small enough that a mistake — a wick too thin, a jar that sweats, a scent nobody likes — costs a few hundred rupees rather than a few thousand. Twenty is also a number that divides cleanly: five scents of four, four of five, or two of ten. Each split tells you something different, and each needs a different set of bottles.

This page works at 8%, which sits comfortably inside the wax maker's stated maximum for both CSI soy waxes: up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464. Those are formulation limits, not regulatory ones. If you want to test at 10%, the oil for 20 candles rises to 400 g, and every bottle in the plans below needs to step up. Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns as a working assumption.

Three ways to split 20 candles

The same 20 candles can be split three sensible ways. The table prices each one with real in-stock oils. In every case the grams bought are at least the grams needed; the difference is how many scents you learn about and how much oil is left over.

The two-scent split is the cheapest oil bill, ₹1,717.22, and the five-scent split costs only ₹80.04 more. For that difference you learn about three more scents. The four-scent split costs the most, ₹1,927.48, but it is the only one with a real safety margin: 20 g of each oil left, enough for another candle and a test pot. It is also the only layout that pays no 15 g premium at all.

The 65 g trick, oil by oil

For oils that list both a 15 g and a 50 g in stock, one of each covers four 200 g candles at 8% with a gram to spare. That is usually cheaper than buying the 100 g and leaving 36 g unused. For four candles, 50 g + 15 g is the cheapest route for all five oils. For five candles, the answer changes oil by oil. Japanese Cherry Blossom, Apple Cinnamon, Mango Coconut and Bergamot Amber are cheaper as 50 g + two 15 g than as a 100 g, though the 100 g leaves you 20 g spare. Woody Oud is the exception: its 100 g, at ₹453.12, is cheaper than 50 g + two 15 g (₹457.84) and gives you 20 g more. The reason is that Woody Oud's price per gram falls from ₹5.43 at 50 g to ₹4.53 at 100 g, a bigger step than most oils make.

The oil cost that ends up in each candle is what matters for pricing. Here it is for all five scents, both at the 65 g purchase price (what you actually pay for this first batch) and at the 50 g rate (what the oil is worth per gram once you reorder at 50 g or 100 g).

The difference between the two columns is the 15 g premium, spread over four candles: between ₹4.31 and ₹7.10 a candle. That is the price of starting small. Material cost here is oil, 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹110.22), one Eco Thin C1 wick and one White Matte Glass Jar. It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

The whole 20-candle pack

Oil is only part of the first order. Here is everything the 20 candles use, from the same store, with each line rounded up to a whole listed pack.

A few choices in that bill are worth explaining. The wax is four 1 kg bags rather than one 5 kg bag. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and at 5 kg, so the 5 kg bag (₹2,995.00) buys nothing but an extra kilo you may not use yet. If you prefer Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo, four 1 kg bags cost ₹2,029.60, which saves ₹366.40; it is rated up to 10% fragrance load, which covers 8%. The wicks are a pack of 50, not two packs of 10, because the spare 30 are what you use for test pots and re-pours. The jars are exactly 20.

Divided across 20 candles, the pack works out at ₹295.21 a candle, a little more than the material cost in the table above because you buy 320 g of wax and 30 wicks you do not use in this batch. Using the pack: test, then sell

A starter pack only earns its cost if the 20 candles teach you something. Pour them in an order that lets them.

Once the feedback is in, the second order is easy to plan. Move the winning scents to 100 g, which for most oils costs the same per gram as a kilo and makes 6.25 candles.
