Reed Diffusers × Formula Calculations · Cost per bottle
Twenty-two per cent of the blend by weight is 24.2 g of oil in a 110 ml example fill. Costed honestly — base, glass and reeds included — the oil turns out to be well under half of the bottle. This page builds the cost line by line and shows which decisions actually move it.
₹527.11
CSI raw materials for one 120 ml Gold bottle at 22% · 110 ml example fill at 1.00 g/ml · Longevity Base, Bergamot Amber (100 g rate), 7 white reeds · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much oil and base at 22%? In a 110 ml example fill at 1.00 g/ml: 24.2 g oil + 85.8 g base. At 120 ml: 26.4 g + 93.6 g.

What does the bottle cost? ₹527.11: oil ₹135.52, base ₹222.39, bottle ₹106.20, reeds ₹63.00. Excludes labels, box, courier, labour, GST.

Is the oil the biggest cost? Not here. Base is ₹222.39 against ₹135.52 of oil; glass and reeds are 32.1% of the bottle.

Should I check 22% first? Yes — against the oil's IFRA certificate and in a 22%-versus-20% clarity and room check, ₹5,224.00. See the check.
The short answer
Answer: Weigh 22% of the blend as fragrance oil and 78% as base. In a 110 ml example fill at an example 1.00 g/ml that is 24.2 g + 85.8 g. With Longevity Base, Bergamot Amber at the 100 g rate, the 120 ml Gold bottle and 7 white reeds, the raw-material cost is ₹527.11.
Why: Liquid cost = fill g × (L × oil ₹/g + (1 − L) × base ₹/g); base ₹/g needs a density because base is sold per 500 ml and no density is published. Glass and reeds are separate lines.
Method: Cost every line at the pack you will buy; test six single changes; check 22% against the IFRA certificate's Category 10A limit and in a one-variable clarity and room check against a 20% control.
One 120 ml bottle at 22%: where the money goes Longevity Base + Bergamot Amber (100 g rate) · 110 ml example fill at 1.00 g/ml · 7 white fibre reeds ₹222.39 Base 42.2% ₹135.52 Fragrance oil 25.7% ₹106.20 Gold bottle 20.1% ₹63.00 Reeds 12.0% Total ₹527.11 Per bottle, what moves the total (each line changes one thing) Oil pack: 15 g instead of 100 g +₹33.91 Oil pack: 1 kg instead of 100 g −₹3.94 Density 1.05 instead of 1.00 g/ml +₹6.78 Fill 120 ml instead of 110 ml +₹32.54 Load 25% instead of 22% +₹9.93 Black reeds (50+) instead of white −₹7.00 At 22% the base, not the oil, is the bigger liquid line here — and glass plus reeds are over a third of the bottle.
The raw-material cost of one 120 ml Gold bottle at 22% (110 ml example fill, 1.00 g/ml example density), split into base, oil, glass and reeds, and the effect of six single changes. Oil pack size above 100 g and density barely move it; fill, load and oil choice move it more.
Straight answer
How do I make a reed diffuser with 22% fragrance oil and calculate the raw-material cost per 120 ml bottle?
Weigh 22% of the finished blend as fragrance oil and 78% as base, then cost every line at the pack you will actually buy. The 120 ml Gold bottle has no published fill line and reeds displace liquid, so this page costs an example 110 ml fill; no density is published, so it uses an example 1.00 g/ml. That is 110 g of blend: 24.2 g of oil and 85.8 g of base. With Longevity Base (₹2.59 per g at the example density) and Bergamot Amber (₹5.60 per g at 100 g), the liquid is ₹357.91; the bottle adds ₹106.20 and 7 white reeds ₹63.00, for ₹527.11 in CSI materials, before labels, box, courier, labour and GST. At 22% the base is the bigger liquid line, and glass plus reeds are over a third of the bottle. Check 22% against the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit and a 20% control before you price it.
One line: fill g × (22% × oil ₹/g + 78% × base ₹/g) + bottle + reeds — then prove 22% beats 20% before you charge for it.
At 22% in a 110 ml fill (example) of the 120 ml Gold bottle, the liquid is 24.2 g of oil and 85.8 g of base at an example 1.00 g/ml, and the bottle costs ₹527.11 in CSI materials with Longevity Base, Bergamot Amber at the 100 g rate and 7 white fibre reeds — ₹357.91 of it liquid. A 22%-versus-20% compatibility check costs ₹5,224.00.

Making it: 22% by weight, bottle by bottle and batch by batch

Twenty-two per cent is a weight ratio of the whole blend. Write it that way and the cost falls out of the same numbers.

A 22% reed diffuser is one in which fragrance oil is 22% of the finished liquid's weight and base is the other 78%. That sits inside the 10–30% range every CSI base page gives and a little above the 20% that the Pure Performance page recommends as a working point. Before you can cost a bottle, you need two figures CSI cannot give you: how much liquid goes in it, and what that liquid weighs. The Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle's 120 ml is the listing's size, not a published fill line, and reeds displace liquid, so this page costs a labelled example fill of 110 ml and shows 100 ml and 120 ml alongside. No density is published for any CSI base or oil, so this page uses an example 1.00 g/ml and shows ±5%.

At those figures one bottle holds 110 g of blend: 24.2 g of fragrance oil and 85.8 g of base. Weighing that for every bottle is slow and invites small errors, so mix in batches. Ten bottles — one pack of Gold bottles — with a 3% working allowance for what stays in the vessel is 1,133.0 g of blend: 249.3 g of oil and 883.7 g of base, weighed onto a tared vessel, stirred until uniform, and rested 24–48 hours as the base pages ask before you fill by weight. Calculating a 120 ml diffuser at 20% by weight walks through the per-bottle weighing in detail, and why weight beats volume explains why the batch sheet should never say millilitres.

What goes into each bottle
Fill (example) Blend Fragrance oil (22%) Base (78%) 10-bottle batch with 3% allowance
100 ml 100 g 22.00 g 78.00 g 226.6 g oil + 803.4 g base
110 ml 110 g 24.20 g 85.80 g 249.3 g oil + 883.7 g base
120 ml 120 g 26.40 g 93.60 g 271.9 g oil + 964.1 g base
1
Measure your fill onceFill one empty Gold 120 ml bottle with water to the level you will sell, insert 7 reeds, and check the headspace. Pour the water into a beaker to read the volume. That is your fill; this page uses 110 ml as the example.
2
Mix a ten-bottle batch by weightTare the vessel, pour 883.7 g of base, tare, pour 249.3 g of oil. Stir gently until uniform and cover. The 3% is a working allowance for what stays in the vessel — measure yours.
3
Weigh 100 ml of the blendThree readings in a beaker on the scale, averaged. That is your density, and it turns the fill in millilitres into a target fill weight for every bottle.
4
Rest, then fill by weightRest 24–48 hours as the base pages ask, check the blend against a white card and a black card, then fill each bottle on the tared scale to the target weight and cap it.
Check 22% against the oil's IFRA certificate first
The base pages allow up to 30%, but the oil's own IFRA limit for the category covering reed diffusers — listed as Category 10A in current IFRA amendments, as commonly summarised by suppliers — also applies, and the lower of the two wins. CSI publishes no IFRA percentage for any oil. Ask for the oil's IFRA certificate on WhatsApp and read its Category 10A line before you cost a 22% product. What to do when the certificate says less than your load covers the case where it does.

The raw-material cost per 120 ml bottle

Four lines make up the bottle: oil, base, glass and reeds. Cost all four at the pack you will really buy.

The cost formula is the one used throughout the series: liquid cost = fill grams × (load × oil ₹ per g + (1 − load) × base ₹ per g), plus the bottle and the reeds. Base is sold by the 500 ml, so its rupees per gram need the density: Longevity Base at ₹1,296.00 for 500 ml is ₹2.59 per ml, which is ₹2.59 per gram at the example 1.00 g/ml. Bergamot Amber costs ₹5.60 per gram at the 100 g pack — the size a small workshop is most likely to buy for a run of ten to twenty bottles.

Raw-material cost of one 22% bottle
Line Quantity Rate Cost Share of bottle
Bergamot Amber (100 g pack) 24.2 g ₹5.60 per g ₹135.52 25.7%
Longevity Base (500 ml) 85.8 g = 85.8 ml ₹2.59 per g ₹222.39 42.2%
Liquid 110 g ₹3.25 per g of blend ₹357.91 67.9%
Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 120 ml 1 bottle pack of 10 ÷ 10 ₹106.20 20.1%
white fibre reeds 7 reeds ₹9.00 each (50 and up) ₹63.00 12.0%
Raw materials per bottle ₹527.11 100%

Two things surprise most makers when they see this table. First, at 22% the base, not the fragrance oil, is the larger liquid line: ₹222.39 against ₹135.52, because 78% of the blend is base and Longevity is ₹2.59 a gram at the example density, while this oil is ₹5.60 a gram for only 22% of it. A cheaper oil makes the gap wider; a dearer one closes it. Second, the bottle and reeds together are 32.1% of the total. Saving a few grams of oil moves the bottle cost far less than the choice of reed colour or pack size. The total excludes labels, a box, a reed sleeve or stopper (CSI does not list these), courier, labour and GST — add your own quotes as labelled lines.

The CSI principle
Cost the whole bottle, not the fragrance load. At 22% the oil is the line everyone watches and rarely the line that decides the price.
Base, glass and reeds are over half of this bottle. A load decision is a performance decision first; its cost effect is smaller than it feels.

What moves the cost, one line at a time

The diagram above shows six single changes against the base case. Each table below takes one of them in more detail, so you can see which decisions are worth agonising over and which are not.

Oil pack size only · everything else as the base case · pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026
Does a bigger oil pack make the bottle cheaper?
Bergamot Amber pack Per gram Oil per bottle Bottle total Versus 100 g
15 g ₹7.00 ₹169.43 ₹561.03 +₹33.91
50 g ₹5.60 ₹135.52 ₹527.11 +₹0.00
100 g ₹5.60 ₹135.52 ₹527.11 +₹0.00
500 g ₹5.44 ₹131.55 ₹523.14 −₹3.97
1 kg ₹5.44 ₹131.58 ₹523.17 −₹3.94

For this oil the real price step is between the 15 g and the 50 g: the 50 g and 100 g are the same ₹5.60 per gram, and the 500 g and 1 kg are ₹5.44 and ₹5.44 — a saving of under ₹3.95 a bottle. That pattern is typical on CSI's catalogue: per-gram breaks above 100 g are rare, and buying bigger mostly buys convenience and stock security rather than a lower rate. Volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp and no discount figure is published.

Load 25% 110.0 g ₹154.00 ₹213.84 ₹367.84 ₹537.04

Density changes the liquid cost less than you might expect, because a heavier blend means more grams of both oil and base in the same 110 ml, but the base is priced per millilitre, so its line barely moves; the oil line moves by about 5%. Fill matters more: going from 110 ml to 120 ml adds ₹32.54 a bottle. And the load — the number most makers argue about — moves the bottle by ₹6.62 between 20% and 22%, and by ₹9.93 between 22% and 25%, with this oil. Comparing 18%, 20% and 22% by room throw, consumption and cost per day is where to decide whether 22% earns that money back in performance.

Oil choice versus the cost of a bottle
Oil Base Oil ₹ per g Oil per bottle Base per bottle Bottle total
British Rose Softness ₹3.42 ₹82.81 ₹188.59 ₹440.60
Bergamot Amber Longevity ₹5.60 ₹135.52 ₹222.39 ₹527.11
Santal Noir Longevity ₹9.19 ₹222.40 ₹222.39 ₹613.99

Oil choice is the one lever that can move a 22% bottle by a large amount. From British Rose in Softness to Santal Noir in Longevity, the bottle cost spans ₹440.60 to ₹613.99. That is a range set by the oils' listed prices, not by any claim about how they perform — CSI publishes no diffuser throw or longevity data for any oil. Choose the fragrance your customer wants; then cost it honestly.

Reeds Per reed 7 per bottle Versus white 50+
White, pack of 25 ₹10.60 ₹74.20 +₹11.20

Black, pack of 25 ₹9.44 ₹66.08 +₹3.08
Black, 50 and up ₹8.00 ₹56.00 −₹7.00
The common mistake: costing the oil and calling it the bottle. A maker works out 24.2 g × ₹5.60 = ₹135.52, prices the diffuser from that, and is surprised the margin disappears. The oil is 25.7% of this bottle. Fix: cost every line — oil, base, glass, reeds — at the rate of the pack you will actually buy, then add your own labels, box, courier and labour as labelled lines. Selling a 120 ml diffuser for ₹799 works backwards from a selling price to the maximum material cost.

Before you price it: a 22% compatibility check

Costing a formula that clouds or separates is wasted arithmetic, so check that 22% holds in your base with your oil before you put a price on it. The Longevity page itself warns that "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases" and says to reduce the percentage and retest if clouding occurs. A one-variable check against a 20% control — the load the Pure Performance page recommends as a working point — answers the question in a week, using one pack of Gold 120 ml bottles.

Arm Bottles Load Record
Control C1–C3 reeded, C4 capped 20% Clarity at 0 h, 24–48 h, 7 days (white and black card); daily weight with reeds in; blind room score days 1, 3, 7
Test T1–T3 reeded, T4 capped 22% Same
Spare S1–S2 — Breakage, or a cool-night clarity check on one capped bottle of each

The capped bottles are the clarity test: any haze, layering, droplets or sediment at 24–48 hours or 7 days, against a white card and a black card, means the formula is not stable at that load in that base. A cool-room night is a useful extra check — record the temperature, it is a labelled example condition, not a specification. The reeded bottles give you grams per day (weight lost ÷ days, reeds in) and a blind room score on your house scale. If the 22% bottles stay clear, lose weight at a similar rate and score above the 20% control, the extra ₹6.62 a bottle is buying something. If they score the same, the 20% formula is the honest product. Can I increase from 20% to 30%? covers the higher end of the range, and does more oil always mean a stronger diffuser? covers why it often does not.

And if you only make a handful of bottles, buy the 100 g of oil, not the 1 kg: for Bergamot Amber the 1 kg saves ₹3.94 a bottle and ties up ₹5,437.00 in one pack.

With CSI materials at 22% in a 110 ml example fill — Longevity Base, Bergamot Amber at the 100 g rate, the 120 ml Gold bottle and 7 white reeds — about ₹527.11 before labels, packaging, courier, labour and GST. Oil choice moves it most.
How much fragrance oil is in a 22% reed diffuser?
22% of the blend's weight. In 110 g of blend that is 24.2 g; in 120 g, 26.4 g. Convert your fill from ml to g with your measured blend density.
How do I calculate reed diffuser cost per bottle?
Fill grams × (load × oil price per gram + (1 − load) × base price per gram), plus bottle and reeds. Base sold per ml needs your density to convert to per gram.
Is 22% fragrance oil too much for a reed diffuser?
It is inside the 10–30% range on CSI's base pages, but the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit also applies and the lower wins. Check the certificate and confirm the blend stays clear at 22% in your base.
Does buying 1 kg of fragrance oil make diffusers cheaper?
Rarely by much. For most CSI oils the 1 kg is within about 1% of the 100 g per gram; for Bergamot Amber it saves ₹3.94 per 120 ml bottle at 22%. The real step is from 15 g to 50 g or 100 g.
What is the biggest cost in a reed diffuser?
It depends on the oil, but often not the oil. In this example the base, the bottle and the reeds together are well over half the raw-material cost.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)). Reader's figures: 22% load, 120 ml bottle. Labelled examples: 110 ml fill (100 and 120 ml shown), density 1.00 g/ml with ±5%, 7 reeds per bottle, 3% batch allowance, eight filled bottles in the check with a 7-day hold. Bottle cost = pack of 10 ÷ 10; reeds at the 50-and-up rate unless stated. What CSI's diffuser-base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base is a crystal-clear "Professional Reed & Car Diffuser Base" with a 10–30% fragrance range and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling. Pure Performance — neutral, for all families, 20% recommended, typical 75% base + 25% fragrance, example 75 ml + 25 ml for 100 ml at 25%; Longevity — oriental, woody, resinous, spicy and gourmand, avoid light florals, citrus and aquatics, "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases"; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand. CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ (₹1,499.00) is out of stock. Reed page: length 20.3 cm and "6–8 reeds" for a standard 50–100 ml bottle; reed diameter not published. Gold bottle: neck diameter, fill line and any reducer not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any diffuser base, no density or IFRA percentage for any fragrance oil, and no diffuser throw, consumption or longevity data for any base, oil or reed. Every density on this page is a labelled example, every load above the page range is excluded, and every pass line is the reader's labelled house standard. IFRA: reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A in current IFRA amendments as commonly summarised by suppliers' IFRA guides — confirm against the category descriptions on your oil's certificate; the lower of the base page's 30% and the certificate's limit applies. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
