Commercial Fragrance · Wax Melt Quantities
The short answer is a percentage; the useful answer is grams. Fragrance load is a share of the finished melt's weight, and the wax decides how high it may go. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks that is up to 13%; on CSI 464, up to 10%. This page turns those percentages into grams per melt, per pack and per batch, and prices every one.
1.0 g
fragrance oil in one illustrative 10 g melt at a 10% load — ₹8.81 in oil and wax with British Rose at its 100 g rate on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil should I use in wax melts? On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, anywhere from about 6% up to the 13% stated ceiling — never above. In an illustrative 10 g melt that is 0.6 g to 1.3 g of oil. On CSI 464 the ceiling is 10% (1.0 g). For other waxes, confirm the maximum first.

How do I calculate fragrance oil for wax melts? Oil = finished weight × load. Wax = finished weight − oil. For a 1 kg batch at 10%: 100 g oil + 900 g wax. Weigh one filled cavity of your mould to find the finished weight per melt — CSI does not publish cavity weights.

What does the fragrance in one wax melt cost? With British Rose at its 100 g rate, ₹2.05 at 6% and ₹4.45 at 13% for a 10 g melt. With Raat Ki Rani, ₹4.20 to ₹9.10. The cost tables add wax and packs.

Is 10% fragrance too much for wax melts? Not on Chunks (ceiling 13%) and it is exactly the ceiling on CSI 464. For soy pearl, soy pillar, paraffin, beeswax or soy butter, no maximum is published in our data — ask CSI on WhatsApp before going that high.
The short answer
Grams per melt: 10 g melt: 0.6 g (6%) · 0.8 g (8%) · 1.0 g (10%) · 1.2 g (12%) · 1.3 g (13%, Chunks ceiling). CSI 464 stops at 1.0 g.
Per batch: 1 kg of finished melts: 60 g oil at 6%, 100 g at 10%, 130 g at 13%. Wax is the rest.
Per melt cost: British Rose on Chunks: ₹8.25 at 8%, ₹9.66 at 13%. Raat Ki Rani: ₹11.11 to ₹14.31.
Inside one illustrative 10 g wax melt, from 6% to the 13% ceiling Black = fragrance oil, grey = wax. Load is a share of the finished melt weight. 6% 0.6 g oil + 9.4 g wax 8% 0.8 g oil + 9.2 g wax 10% 1.0 g oil + 9.0 g wax 12% 1.2 g oil + 8.8 g wax 13% 1.3 g oil + 8.7 g wax CSI 464 ceiling (10%) Chunks ceiling (13%) — never above
The 10 g melt is illustrative — weigh one filled cavity of your own mould. The dashed line marks CSI 464's stated maximum (10%); the solid line marks Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' stated maximum (13%). Both are the wax makers' formulation limits, not regulatory limits. For any other wax, no maximum is published here.
Straight answer
How much fragrance oil should I use in wax melts?
Use a load inside your wax's stated ceiling, and measure it in grams. Load is a share of the finished weight: oil = melt weight × load. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, the wax maker's stated maximum is 13%, so an illustrative 10 g melt can hold anywhere from 0.6 g (6%) to 1.3 g (13%) — never more. On CSI 464 the maximum is 10%, or 1.0 g. CSI does not list a wax sold specifically as melt wax, and for soy pearl, soy pillar, paraffin, beeswax or soy butter no maximum is published in our data, so confirm it before you go high. A 1 kg batch at 10% is 100 g of oil and 900 g of wax. In money, a 10 g melt of British Rose on Chunks costs ₹8.25 at 8% and ₹9.66 at 13%; a premium oil like Raat Ki Rani costs ₹11.11 to ₹14.31. Weigh one filled cavity of your mould to replace our 10 g, and mix by the batch, not by the melt.
One line: oil = melt weight × load — and the load stops at your wax's stated ceiling, 13% on Chunks and 10% on CSI 464.
For the gram maths you need two things: an oil and a scale. British Rose 100 g at ₹342.20 is a hundred illustrative 10 g melts at 10%, and the Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354.00 means you weigh rather than guess. Add Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1 kg (₹599.00) and you have a batch.

The gram table

A percentage is a promise. A gram is a measurement. Pour by the gram.

Fragrance load is always a share of the finished weight — oil plus wax — not a share of the wax alone. That convention matters: 10% of a 10 g melt is 1.0 g of oil and 9.0 g of wax, not 1.0 g of oil added to 10 g of wax (which would be 9.1%). Use it consistently and your figures match the wax maker's ceiling exactly. The table gives the grams for a single illustrative 10 g melt, a 60 g pack of six, and a 1 kg batch, at every load from 6% to the 13% ceiling on Chunks.

Illustrative 10 g melt · load = share of finished weight · ceilings: Chunks 13%, CSI 464 10%
Oil and wax at every load, from one melt to one kilo
Load Oil per 10 g melt Wax per melt Oil per 60 g pack Wax per pack Oil per 1 kg batch Wax per batch Allowed on
6% 0.6 g 9.4 g 3.6 g 56.4 g 60 g 940 g Chunks or CSI 464
8% 0.8 g 9.2 g 4.8 g 55.2 g 80 g 920 g Chunks or CSI 464
10% 1.0 g 9.0 g 6.0 g 54.0 g 100 g 900 g Chunks or CSI 464
12% 1.2 g 8.8 g 7.2 g 52.8 g 120 g 880 g Chunks only
13% 1.3 g 8.7 g 7.8 g 52.2 g 130 g 870 g Chunks only

Two rows need a note. At 12% and 13%, only Chunks is allowed: CSI 464's stated maximum is 10%, so those rows are off-limits in that wax. And 13% is a ceiling, not a target. It is the most the wax maker says the wax can hold; it is not a promise that 13% will smell stronger than 10% in your warmer. Best Fragrance Load for Strong Wax Melts covers how to choose the load that actually performs, and why more oil is not always more scent.

Write the load on every tray
Six melts at 8% and six at 12% look identical once set. Label each tray with oil, load and date before it cools, and write the grams on your batch sheet. A load you cannot prove is a load you cannot repeat.

Why the wax sets the limit

Every wax can hold only so much oil before the oil starts to separate. That limit is a property of the wax, which is why it changes from wax to wax and not from product to product. A melt and a candle poured in the same wax share the same ceiling. What is published for CSI's waxes is short:

CSI does not list a wax sold specifically as melt wax. Chunks and CSI 464 are sold for container candles, and they are the only two with a published ceiling, so they are the only two where this page can give you a maximum. If you want to use another wax, ask CSI for the wax maker's stated maximum first. Until you have it, stay in a cautious test range — general practice uses 6–10% as a test range in an unfamiliar wax, starting at the low end — and treat that as a starting point for tests, not a specification. Never exceed 13% in any wax.

The sign the load is too high. In general candle-making practice, a wax holding more oil than it can bind shows it: oily spots or a wet film on the melt surface, melts that feel greasy in the pack, or oil pooling in the bottom of the clamshell. If you see that, the load is past what that wax can hold in your conditions. Drop it, even if you are under the published ceiling — the ceiling is the wax maker's maximum, not a guarantee for every oil.

Cost per melt and per pack

Every point of load is a trade: a tenth of a gram of cheap wax out, a tenth of a gram of dear oil in.

Load changes cost because oil costs far more per gram than wax. At ₹0.60 a gram, Chunks cost less than a fifth of the cheapest oil in this guide. Every point of load swaps a tenth of a gram of cheap wax for a tenth of a gram of expensive oil. Here is what that does to one 10 g melt for three oils from three price tiers, each at its 100 g rate:

Oil and wax in one 10 g melt on Chunks (₹0.60/g) · oil at 100 g rate
Cost per melt, 6% to 13%
Oil 6% 8% 10% 12% 13%
British Rose (₹3.42/g at 100 g) ₹7.68 ₹8.25 ₹8.81 ₹9.38 ₹9.66
Bergamot Amber (₹5.60/g at 100 g) ₹8.99 ₹9.99 ₹10.99 ₹11.99 ₹12.49
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) (₹7.00/g at 100 g) ₹9.83 ₹11.11 ₹12.39 ₹13.67 ₹14.31

The per-melt gap between 8% and 13% is ₹1.41 for British Rose and ₹3.20 for Raat Ki Rani. Small per melt; not small per thousand. For Raat Ki Rani, 13% instead of 8% adds ₹3,200.50 to every thousand melts. That is why the load should be the one that performs in your warmer, not the highest one allowed.

The Wax Melts Container (₹29.50 each at every pack size) adds 59.6% on top of the oil and wax in a British Rose pack at 8% — packaging, not load, is often the bigger lever on a pack's cost. CSI does not publish its fill weight, so the 60 g pack here is an assumption — if your container holds 48 g or 72 g, weigh one filled and rescale. Labour, labels, freight and GST are not included in any figure on this page.

If your melt is not 10 g

CSI does not publish the cavity weight of any of its moulds, and melt sizes vary widely: a coffee bean from the 55 Cavity Coffee Bean Mould is a fraction of a tablet from the 40 Cavity Square, and a bar from the 9 Bar Chocolate Mould is larger again. The formula does not change: oil = melt weight × load. The table covers five illustrative sizes; weigh your own cavity and pick the nearest row, or multiply directly.

Illustrative melt sizes · oil in grams · load = share of finished weight

25 g 1.50 g 2.00 g 2.50 g 3.25 g 40.00

Small melts expose a practical problem: 0.3 g of oil for a 5 g melt at 6% is too small to weigh reliably one melt at a time on most kitchen scales. That is not a reason to guess. It is a reason to mix by the batch — weigh oil and wax for a whole tray or a whole kilo, stir well, and pour. The load is then correct for every melt in the batch, however small.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A supplier selling oil by the gram has every reason to tell you to pour at the ceiling. We would rather you poured at the lowest load that performs. If British Rose at 8% passes your warmer test, pouring it at 13% costs you an extra ₹1,411.50 every thousand melts for scent your customer may not notice. Find your load by testing, then stop.

Measuring it accurately

Everything above depends on two measurements you make yourself: the weight of your melt and the weight of your oil. Here is the method, start to finish.

1
Weigh one filled cavityFill one cavity of your mould with melted wax, let it set, pop it out and weigh it. That is your melt weight. Do it for each mould you use — they will differ.
2
Choose the load inside the ceilingChunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%. Any other wax: ask CSI on WhatsApp for its stated maximum; until then, test cautiously.
3
Decide the batch weightNumber of melts × melt weight, plus 3–5% for pour loss — a working assumption. Twenty 10 g melts plus 4% is 208 g.
4
Calculate oil and wax for the batchOil = batch × load; wax = batch − oil. For 208 g at 10%: 20.8 g oil, 187.2 g wax.
5
Weigh both on a scaleWeigh the wax, melt it, then weigh the oil into a separate container before adding. The Candle Making Weighing Scale is ₹354.00; check its resolution suits your batch sizes.
6
Stir thoroughly, pour, labelStir well so the oil is evenly through the batch, pour, and label the tray with oil, load and date. Record everything on a batch sheet.

Temperature matters too, but no oil-addition temperature is published in CSI's data for these waxes; follow the wax's product page and use a Pen Thermometer (₹354.00) so your process is repeatable. Colour follows the same logic as oil — CSI's liquid dyes (₹236.00 for 15 g) and dye chips (₹250.00) have no published dose, so follow the product page and record what you used.

Festive melts start with a batch sheet. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. If you know your scents and loads, send us the oils and kilos on WhatsApp and we will quote oil, Chunks and containers together, with GST invoicing and IFRA documentation.
Quote my festive batch
The CSI principle
Weigh the melt, weigh the oil, write it down.
Every load question has a gram answer once you know the melt's weight. Weigh one cavity, multiply by the load, mix by the batch and record it. The rest of melt-making — scent, colour, packaging — sits on top of that one habit.

Once your grams are settled, the next questions are which load performs best — Best Fragrance Load for Strong Wax Melts — and how to compare oils in a warmer — Which Fragrance Oils Give the Strongest Throw in Wax Melts?. If you are buying for volume, Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oil for Commercial Wax Melt Making turns the per-melt grams into melts per kilo.

Ten grams of melt at ten per cent is one gram of oil. Everything else is multiplication.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished melts. The easy advice for a fragrance seller is "pour at the maximum". This page gives the maximum only where the wax maker states one, says plainly that the other waxes have no published ceiling in our data, and recommends the lowest load that performs.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026; containers, moulds and dyes from the 24–25 September 2026 pull; the weighing scale and pen thermometer are Blog 760's figures verified on 10 September 2026. Gram and cost figures are arithmetic on the load formula (oil = weight × load) and those prices, shown to two decimals.

The 10 g melt, other melt sizes, the 60 g pack and the 3–5% pour-loss allowance are illustrative working assumptions — CSI does not publish cavity weights, container fill weights, dye doses or oil-addition temperatures. The 13% (Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464) ceilings are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. For another wax's maximum, IFRA certificates or MSDS, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams of fragrance oil in a wax melt?
For an illustrative 10 g melt: 0.6 g at 6%, 0.8 g at 8%, 1.0 g at 10%, 1.2 g at 12% and 1.3 g at 13%. 13% is the stated maximum on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks; on CSI 464 the maximum is 10% (1.0 g). Weigh your own cavity to replace the 10 g.
What percentage of fragrance oil for soy wax melts?
It depends on the wax's stated ceiling. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: up to 13%. CSI 464: up to 10%. Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Soy Pillar Wax have no ceiling published in our data — ask CSI before going high. Many makers test several loads inside the ceiling and keep the lowest that performs.
How much fragrance oil for 1 kg of wax melts?
For 1 kg of finished melts: 60 g at 6%, 80 g at 8%, 100 g at 10%, 120 g at 12%, 130 g at 13%. If you start from 1 kg of wax instead, oil = 1 kg × load ÷ (1 − load): 111.11 g at 10%, 149.43 g at 13%.
Can you put too much fragrance oil in wax melts?
Yes. Above the wax's stated maximum — 13% for Chunks, 10% for CSI 464 — the wax may not hold the oil. In general practice that shows as oily spots, a greasy film or oil pooling in the pack. Never exceed 13% in any wax.
How do I measure fragrance oil for small wax melts?
Mix by the batch, not by the melt. Work out oil and wax for a whole tray or kilo, weigh both on a scale, stir well and pour. The load is then right for every melt, even ones too small to dose individually.
Do wax melts need more fragrance oil than candles?
Makers often run melts higher than candles, but the ceiling belongs to the wax, not the product: 13% on Chunks and 10% on CSI 464 whether you pour a candle or a melt. Test several loads inside the ceiling and keep the one that performs.
Pour by the gram
Weigh a cavity, choose a load inside the ceiling, mix by the batch. The grams take care of themselves.
