CSI Troubleshooting · Fragrance Load
The load decides how many candles a kilogram makes, so it should decide the order. Prove it on a 100 g bottle and a small production melt, then size the bulk order from the yield.
83 vs 66
candles from 1 kg of oil at 8% vs 10% in a 150 g candle · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Why settle the load before ordering bulk? Because the load sets the order size. A 150 g candle takes 12 g of oil at 8% and 15 g at 10%, so 1 kg makes 83 candles at 8% and 66 at 10%. Order at the wrong load and you either buy 25% more oil than you need or run short.

What sample size do I need? A 50 g bottle covers a 6/8/10% ladder (36 g) with 14 g left. A 100 g bottle covers the ladder and a five-candle scale-up melt at 8%, which is the step we would not skip before a bulk order.

How long does it take? About 30 days: 14 days' cure for the ladder, then 14 days for the scale-up melt at the chosen load, then order.

Is the bulk discount worth rushing for? Rarely. On Citrus Lemon the 1 kg is 5.6% cheaper per gram than the 100 g; on Gardenia (from 100 g) and Chocolate Fudge (from 50 g) bulk is no cheaper per gram at all. A wrong load is a 25% error in the order.
The short answer
The sequence: sample (50–100 g) → 6/8/10% ladder → choose the load blind at day 14 → five-candle scale-up melt at that load → order at day 30.
The order size: candles planned × grams per candle at the proven load, rounded up to packs, with the wax sized from the same load.
The cost of the check: ₹1,650.57 in materials for eight candles with a 100 g of Citrus Lemon (₹300.00), excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST.
When not to order: if every rung of the ladder is weak, the problem is not load; do not buy bulk of that oil in that system.
Thirty days from sample to bulk order Settle the load first; the order size falls out of it. 150 g candles, load on total weight. Day 0 Buy 50–100 g Pour 6 / 8 / 10% Day 7 Pool log, early sniff Day 14 Judge the ladder blind: pick a load Day 15 Scale-up melt: 5 candles at it Day 29 Judge scale-up at its day 14 Day 30 Size the order from the yield cure 14 days cure 14 days What 1 kg of oil makes at each load 6% · 9 g 111 candles per kg 7% · 10.5 g 95 candles per kg 8% · 12 g 83 candles per kg 9% · 13.5 g 74 candles per kg 10% · 15 g 66 candles per kg Order size = candles planned × grams per candle. Ordered at 10% for candles that need 8%, you buy 25% more oil than you use; ordered at 8% for candles that need 10%, you run a fifth short. The load decides the order. Candles per kg = floor(1000 ÷ grams per candle). Day 14 judging is common practice, not a rule. Figures verified 25 September 2026.
The pre-bulk timeline. Two cures of 14 days: one for the 6/8/10% ladder that chooses the load, one for a small production-size melt that checks the load holds when you scale up. Only then is the order sized, from the yield per kilogram at the chosen load shown in the strip below. Day 14 judging is common practice; several CSI oil pages state 48–72 hours as the soy minimum.
Straight answer
How do I optimise fragrance load before buying fragrance oil in bulk?
Buy a sample, not a kilogram. With 50 g you can pour 150 g candles at 6, 8 and 10% (within the lower of your wax's and the oil page's stated maximum) from one melt, cure them to day 14 and pick the lowest load a blind comparison cannot tell from the top one. With 100 g you can also pour a five-candle melt at that load, the size you will actually produce in, and judge it at its own day 14, because larger batches heat and cool differently. Only then size the order: candles planned × grams per candle at the proven load (9 g at 6%, 12 g at 8%, 15 g at 10%), rounded up to packs, with wax sized from the same load. The whole check takes about 30 days and, with Citrus Lemon, ₹1,650.57 in materials. If every rung of the ladder is weak, do not order bulk: the problem is wick, cure or process, not load. Bulk discounts are smaller than a load mistake: 5.6% on Citrus Lemon from 100 g to 1 kg, nothing on Gardenia or Chocolate Fudge, against a 25% error from ordering at 10% for candles that need 8%.
One line: the load you prove on a 100 g bottle decides how many kilograms you order.
One bottle for the whole pre-bulk check: Citrus Lemon 100 g is ₹300.00, enough for the 6/8/10% ladder (36 g) and a five-candle scale-up melt at 8% (60 g). In stock at every size on 25 September 2026.

The load decides the order, not the other way round

Many bulk orders are sized by price break. They should be sized by grams per candle.

Makers usually decide the quantity first ("1 kg is better value") and the load afterwards ("I'll use 10% to be safe"). Reverse it. The number of candles you plan and the grams of oil each candle takes are the only two numbers that size an order honestly, and the second one is the load. Until the load is proven, any bulk order is a guess about how many candles it will make.

What an unproven load does to a bulk order · worked example, Citrus Lemon, 250 candles
Two ways to be wrong, and what each costs
You ordered for The test later proves What happens
10%: 3,750 g, bought as four 1 kg (₹11,328.00) 8% is enough You needed 3,000 g (₹8,496.00). ₹2,832.00 of oil sits on the shelf, about 83 candles' worth at 8%.
8%: 3,000 g, bought as three 1 kg (₹8,496.00) 10% is needed Three kilograms make only 200 candles at 10%: 50 short, and a second order in the busiest weeks.
The proven load — The order matches the candles. Nothing surplus, nothing short.

Neither mistake is dramatic on one order. Repeated across a festive season and several scents, surplus oil ties up cash and a shortfall costs sales at the worst moment. The load test takes 30 days; the order it sizes may carry your season. This post is about that sequence. How to find the lowest workable load in detail is in How to Find the Minimum Fragrance Load That Still Gives Strong Hot Throw; choosing between 6, 8 and 10% on a single oil's range, in Should I Use 6%, 8% or 10% Fragrance Oil for Strong Soy Candles?; the broader hot-throw test before a 1 kg purchase, in What Should I Test Before Buying 1 Kg of a New Candle Fragrance Oil?.

Yield per pack at every load

Whole 150 g candles, load as a percentage of total weight. These numbers turn a proven load into an order.

Candles per pack · 150 g candle
floor(pack grams ÷ oil grams per candle)
Load Oil per candle 50 g 100 g 500 g 1 kg
6% 9 g 5 11 55 111
7% 10.5 g 4 9 47 95
8% 12 g 4 8 41 83
9% 13.5 g 3 7 37 74
10% 15 g 3 6 33 66

And what each load costs per candle for the four oils on this page, at the 1 kg price you will produce with:

Oil per 150 g candle · 1 kg prices, 25 September 2026
The same load costs very different amounts by oil
Load Citrus Lemon (₹2.83/g) Chocolate Fudge (₹3.96/g) Gardenia (₹4.33/g) Dark Vanilla Oud (₹5.69/g)
6% ₹25.49 ₹35.68 ₹38.99 ₹51.22
7% ₹29.74 ₹41.63 ₹45.49 ₹59.76
8% ₹33.98 ₹47.58 ₹51.98 ₹68.29
9% ₹38.23 ₹53.52 ₹58.48 ₹76.83
10% ₹42.48 ₹59.47 ₹64.98 ₹85.36

All four pages allow 10% at most in soy; three state a 6% floor (Gardenia states no floor). In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, whose page states up to 10%, that is also the wax ceiling. These are formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and the ceiling is not a target. What a 10%-to-8% cut adds up to across hundreds of candles is set out in How Much Money Can a Candle Business Save by Reducing Fragrance Load From 10% to 8%?.

Which sample size tests what

A 15 g bottle tells you what an oil smells like. It cannot tell you what load to order at.

Sample sizes are not interchangeable. Each one supports a different amount of evidence, and the smallest is almost never enough to size a bulk order.

What each size can test · 150 g candles
Choose the sample by the evidence you need, not by the price
Size What fits What it can decide What it cannot
15 g One candle at 10% (15 g), or one at 8% with 3 g left Whether you like the scent in wax Any load question: there is nothing to compare against
50 g A 6/8/10% ladder: 9 + 12 + 15 = 36 g, 14 g left Which load a blind comparison prefers Whether that load survives a larger melt; a 14 g remainder is one more candle at 8%
100 g The ladder (36 g) plus five candles at 8% (60 g), 4 g left; or four at 10% The load, and whether it holds in a production-size melt Seasonal or long-term behaviour; that comes from your first production batch
500 g 41 candles at 8% A first production run, once the load is proven Nothing it should be deciding: by this point the test is over

The 15 g is also the dearest per gram on all four oils on this page (Citrus Lemon ₹5.43 against ₹3.40 at 50 g). If you already know you like the scent, skip it and start at 50 g or 100 g. If an oil's 100 g is out of stock, as Chocolate Fudge's is on 25 September 2026, two 50 g bottles do the same job. How many test candles a bulk decision needs in general is the subject of How Many Test Candles Should I Make Before Buying Fragrance Oil in Bulk?.

Argued against our own interest: we sell a 1 kg at a lower per-gram price than the 100 g, and it is tempting to buy it "while you test". Do not. On Citrus Lemon the saving is 5.6% per gram; on Gardenia and Chocolate Fudge there is none, because the price is flat from 100 g and 50 g respectively. A 1 kg ordered at the wrong load is a 25% error in the order, larger than any bulk discount we offer on these oils.

The 30-day pre-bulk sequence

Two cures, one decision each. The first chooses the load; the second checks the load survives your production batch.

Is it actually a load question?

Before any of this, be sure the oil is worth ordering at all. The ladder answers that too. If the 10% candle is weak at day 14 with a full melt pool, no load will save it in your system: the fault is wick, cure, process or the oil itself, and none of those is fixed by a bulk order. Stop, use the weak-hot-throw triage, and reject the oil if it keeps losing (How to Reject Poor-Performing Fragrance Oils Before They Become Expensive Inventory). The pre-bulk sequence assumes the top of the ladder already throws.

1
Day 0 — buy the sample, pour the ladder50 g or 100 g. One wax melt, three 150 g candles at 6, 8 and 10% (9, 12 and 15 g of oil), same jar and wick, oil added at your wax page's temperature. Code the bases.
2
Day 7 — pool log onlyOne burn per candle, pool width and depth hourly. If the 10% candle floods or soots, the wick is too big for the top load; settle that before you judge scent.
3
Day 14 — judge blind, choose the loadCompare 8% with 10%, then 6% with 8%, in similar closed rooms, by people who did not pour. Choose the lowest load they cannot reliably tell from the one above.
4
Day 15 — the scale-up meltMelt enough wax for five candles in the jug or melter you will produce with, at the chosen load, and pour. This is the step makers are most tempted to skip, and the one that catches a batch that behaves differently from a single test candle.
5
Day 29 — judge the scale-up batchBurn two of the five at day 14. Same throw as the ladder candle at that load, same pool: the load is proven. Different: find out why before ordering (My Fragrance Oil Worked in a Small Test but Performs Differently in Bulk Production — Why?).
6
Day 30 — size and place the orderCandles planned × grams per candle, rounded up to packs, plus wax from the same load. Write the load on the order note so the next order matches.
What the check costs · Citrus Lemon 100 g, CSI live pricing, 25 September 2026
Eight 150 g candles: a three-load ladder and a five-candle melt at 8%
Item Used Value consumed
Citrus Lemon 100 g (₹300.00) 96 g (36 g ladder + 60 g melt) ₹288.00
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 10 kg price 1,104 g ₹560.17
Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), pack of 10 ₹944.00 8 jars ₹755.20
Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1), pack of 10 ₹59.00 8 wicks ₹47.20
Total 8 candles ₹1,650.57 (₹206.32 per candle)

If the ladder chooses 10%, the melt is four candles (60 g) instead of five. The scale-up candles are sellable stock if they pass, which offsets most of the cost. Excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST; weigh everything on a scale, because 6% and 8% differ by 3 g.

Sizing the bulk order from the proven load

Three steps, done on paper before you message anyone.

Worked example · 250 Citrus Lemon candles at a proven 8%, CSI live pricing, 25 September 2026
From candle count to order, oil and wax together
Step Calculation Result
1 · Oil needed 250 × 12 g 3,000 g
2 · Round to packs Three 1 kg (₹2,832.00 each); the 1 kg is cheaper than two 500 g ₹8,496.00
3 · Wax needed 250 × 138 g 34,500 g: three 10 kg + one 5 kg = ₹17,759.00
Oil + wax Before jars, wicks, labour, freight, packaging and GST ₹26,255.00, ₹105.02 per candle

Three kilograms leaves no margin for spills, a retained sample or a remake. Whether to add a 500 g for safety is a judgement about your process; if you do, record it as a margin, not a change of load. The same 250 candles at 10% would need 3,750 g, which is three 1 kg plus a 500 g (₹9,916.00) and still 250 g short, so in practice four 1 kg.

Write the load on the order
When you message for a quote, send the candle count and the proven load, not just "1 kg". It lets us sanity-check the quantity, and it leaves a record your next order can match.

Where bulk is cheaper per gram, and where it is not

The four oils on this page show four different price ladders, which is why "bulk is always cheaper" is not a safe rule on CSI's store.

Price ladders · per gram, CSI live pricing, 25 September 2026
Where the per-gram price drops, and where it stops dropping
Oil 15 g 50 g 100 g 500 g 1 kg Shape
Citrus Lemon ₹5.43 ₹3.40 ₹3.00 ₹2.84 ₹2.83 Falls all the way; 1 kg ₹8.00 cheaper than two 500 g
Gardenia ₹7.00 ₹4.46 ₹4.33 ₹4.33 ₹4.33 Flat from 100 g
Chocolate Fudge ₹6.21 ₹3.96 ₹3.96 (out of stock) ₹3.96 ₹3.96 Flat from 50 g; 100 g out of stock on 25 September 2026
Dark Vanilla Oud ₹7.00 ₹6.40 ₹5.90 ₹5.69 ₹5.69 Falls to 500 g; 1 kg ₹1.00 more than two 500 g

For flat-priced oils, order the pack size that matches the proven quantity and your storage, not the biggest one. Where the 1 kg costs a rupee more than two 500 g packs, two 500 g packs are the marginally cheaper route. None of this is a reason to order before the load is proven; for the maths of what a lower load saves once it is, see How Much Money Can a Candle Business Save by Reducing Fragrance Load From 10% to 8%?, and for whether a different oil at a lower load could be cheaper, Can I Reduce Fragrance Load by Buying a Better-Performing Fragrance Oil?.

Four oils with four price ladders, and the wax

Chosen because their pages state a candle load (three with a 6% floor) and because together they show every kind of CSI price ladder a pre-bulk buyer meets: steep, flat, broken and premium. Not a ranking; CSI has not measured throw. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8%.

1
citrus · the steep price ladder · range 6–10%
Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil
Of the four, the oil where sample size and bulk size differ most. The 15 g is ₹5.43 per gram and the 1 kg ₹2.83, so the 15 g costs 1.9 times as much per gram, and the 1 kg is even ₹8.00 cheaper than two 500 g packs. The page states "candles (6-10%)" and "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing"; notes: "zesty lemon and lime top notes, bright grapefruit and orange heart, and a tangy mandarin finish". "Strong throw" is the page's wording. A top-led citrus is the kind of scent that often needs more of its range, which is why the ladder matters here more than most: the difference between 8% and 10% is 25% of your bulk order. Limitation: no base note named, so do not assume it will behave like a woody at the same load.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹81.42 ₹5.43 1
50 gm ₹170.00 ₹3.40 4
100 gm ₹300.00 ₹3.00 8
500 gm ₹1,420.00 ₹2.84 41
1 kg ₹2,832.00 ₹2.83 83
At the 1 kg price: ₹33.98 per candle at 8%, ₹42.48 at 10%. Buy Citrus Lemon 100 g
2
white floral · the flat price ladder · up to 10%
Gardenia Fragrance Oil
The oil where the test bottle costs the same per gram as bulk. From 100 g upwards Gardenia is ₹4.33 per gram, so the 100 g you test with is no dearer per gram than the 1 kg, and there is no price reason to buy big before the load is settled. The page states "Up to 10% for soy wax candles", a soy cure of "48-72 hours", "Vanillin content 0.2% - minimal discoloration risk" (the page's claim) and "Moderate to strong throw" (also the page's). Notes: "Rich, creamy, and velvety - a true-to-life gardenia bloom". One verified customer calls it "highly concentrated"; that is one maker's view, and a good reason to include the 6% candle. Limitation: no stated floor, so 6% is our judgement.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹105.02 ₹7.00 1
50 gm ₹223.02 ₹4.46 4
100 gm ₹433.00 ₹4.33 8
500 gm ₹2,166.00 ₹4.33 41
1000 gm ₹4,332.00 ₹4.33 83
At ₹4.33 per gram from 100 g: ₹51.98 per candle at 8%. Buy Gardenia 100 g
3
gourmand · the broken sample ladder · range 6–10%
Chocolate Fudge Fragrance Oil
The oil where a size is missing. The 100 g is out of stock on 25 September 2026, so the path is a 50 g for the ladder and a second 50 g (two cost ₹396.48, the same as the listed 100 g price) for the scale-up melt. From 50 g to 1 kg the price is flat at ₹3.96 per gram, so, as with Gardenia, bulk buys volume, not a lower rate. The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles"; notes: "rich cocoa and sweet caramel top notes, creamy chocolate and toasted nuts middle notes, and vanilla bean and warm brown sugar base"; "Strong throw" is the page's claim. Limitation: a vanilla-bean base and no stated vanillin figure, so judge colour in light wax separately from load.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹93.22 ₹6.21 1
50 gm ₹198.24 ₹3.96 4
100 gm ₹396.48 — Out of stock on 25 September 2026 ₹3.96 Out of stock
500 gm ₹1,982.40 ₹3.96 41
1000 gm ₹3,964.80 ₹3.96 83
At ₹3.96 per gram from 50 g: ₹47.58 per candle at 8%. Buy Chocolate Fudge 50 g
4
oud-gourmand · the premium price ladder · range 6–10%
Dark Vanilla Oud
The oil where a load mistake costs most per candle among the four. At the 1 kg price every point of load is 1.5 g, or ₹8.54 per candle. The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" and describes "opening with vanilla and spicy cardamom, deepening into exotic oud and deep amber, and settling into warm musk and woody cedar"; "Strong throw" is the page's wording. Price facts: the 1 kg is only 3.5% cheaper per gram than the 100 g, and costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g packs. Limitation: dense, vanilla-led and oud-heavy, the kind of profile that often needs a wick check; settle the wick at the ladder's top load before judging.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹105.02 ₹7.00 1
50 gm ₹320.00 ₹6.40 4
100 gm ₹590.00 ₹5.90 8
500 gm ₹2,845.00 ₹5.69 41
1 kg ₹5,691.00 ₹5.69 83
At the 1 kg price: ₹68.29 per candle at 8%, ₹85.36 at 10%. Buy Dark Vanilla Oud 100 g

wax · the bulk partner · up to 10%
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
Order the wax with the oil, sized from the same proven load. The page states a fragrance load of "Up to 10%" (so a 10% ladder top is its ceiling), a pour temperature of 80°C–90°C, "Low frosting, minimal blooming" and "Strong scent throw (both cold and hot)" (the page's claims). It is flat per gram from 1 kg to 10 kg: the 10 kg is no cheaper per gram than the 1 kg, so buy wax in whatever size suits your storage. Lower loads use slightly more wax per candle (138 g at 8% against 135 g at 10%), which barely moves a wax order. Limitation: a 10% ceiling; an oil whose page allows more is still capped at 10% in this wax.
Size Price Per gram What it covers
500 g ₹260.00 ₹0.52 3 candles at 8% (138 g each)
1 kg ₹507.40 ₹0.51 7 candles at 8% (138 g each)

10 kg ₹5,074.00 ₹0.51 72 candles at 8% (138 g each)

Ordering for Christmas 2026

Christmas falls on 25 December 2026, 91 days after 25 September 2026. A 30-day pre-bulk sequence started this week proves the load by late October, leaving November for the order, dispatch and a 14-day production cure. Diwali (8 November 2026, 44 days away) is too close for the full sequence plus a cured production batch; for Diwali, produce at a load you have already proven and run this sequence for Christmas.

The CSI principle
Prove the grams per candle before you buy the kilograms.
A bulk order is a load multiplied by a candle count. Get the load from a sample and a scale-up melt, and the order sizes itself.
"A bulk discount saves a few per cent. A wrong load costs a quarter of the order."

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wax, jars and wicks named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you not to buy our 1 kg until a 100 g bottle has proven your load, and points out where our bulk sizes are no cheaper per gram. We would rather you order once, correctly.

Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; the Chocolate Fudge 100 g is out of stock on that date and flagged wherever it appears. Loads, cures, notes and throw wording are quoted from product pages; Gardenia states no floor and Dark Vanilla Oud no vanillin figure, and we say so.

The 30-day sequence, the scale-up melt, the sample-size guidance and the worked order are editorial judgement and illustration; CSI has no measured throw data for any oil. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decide fragrance load before buying fragrance oil in bulk?
Buy a 50 g or 100 g sample, pour 150 g candles at 6, 8 and 10% from one melt, cure to day 14 and choose the lowest load a blind comparison cannot tell from the one above. Then pour five candles at that load in your production melt, judge them at day 14, and order.
How many candles does 1 kg of fragrance oil make?
In a 150 g candle: 111 at 6%, 95 at 7%, 83 at 8%, 74 at 9% and 66 at 10%, counting whole candles and load as a percentage of total weight.
What size fragrance oil sample should I buy for load testing?
At least 50 g, which covers a 6/8/10% ladder of 150 g candles (36 g). A 100 g also covers a five-candle scale-up melt at 8%. A 15 g only makes one candle, so it cannot answer a load question.
Is buying 1 kg of fragrance oil always cheaper per gram?
Not on every CSI oil. Citrus Lemon's 1 kg is 5.6% cheaper per gram than its 100 g; Gardenia is flat from 100 g and Chocolate Fudge from 50 g; on some oils the 1 kg costs a rupee more than two 500 g packs. Check the per-gram price at each size.
How much fragrance oil should I order for 250 candles?
For 150 g candles: 3,000 g at 8% or 3,750 g at 10%. Prove the load first; ordering at 10% for candles that need 8% buys 25% more oil than you use, and the reverse leaves you 50 candles short.
How long should I test a fragrance oil before a bulk order?
About 30 days: 14 days' cure for the load ladder, then 14 days for a small production-size melt at the chosen load. Several CSI pages state 48–72 hours as the soy minimum before burn testing; judging at day 14 is common practice.
Your pre-bulk check
A 100 g bottle, eight candles, 30 days, one proven load.
Citrus Lemon 100 g (₹300.00) covers the 6/8/10% ladder and a five-candle scale-up melt. At the end you know the grams per candle, and the order size is arithmetic.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's fragrance-load cluster. It owns load optimisation as the step before a bulk order: yield per pack at every load, what each sample size can test, a 30-day sequence with a scale-up melt, order sizing from the proven load, and the per-gram price ladders of four oils. The descending minimum-load method belongs to its own post.
