CSI Wick Diagnosis · 7.5 cm Jar, One Size or Two
Huge flame, recommended wick, 7.5 cm jar. In CSI's short range, "one or two sizes smaller" is just C2 and C1, so test them together and settle it in one round. Here is the plan, the maths for your jar and the honest gaps.
₹212.40
Eco C2 10-pack + Eco C1 20-pack: both candidates and the pair round · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My 7.5 cm jar has a huge flame with the recommended wick. Should I test one size smaller or two? Both, side by side, in the same round. In CSI's range, one size smaller than Cotton Braided is Eco C2 and two sizes smaller is Eco C1. There is nothing tabbed in between. Testing both at once costs ₹212.40 in wicks and saves a whole test cycle.

Why not just one size? If one size down is still too strong, you start again and lose about 10 days. If you skip straight to two sizes, you can't tell whether one would have been enough, and C1 may tunnel. Three candles of each, beside three of your current wick, answers it once.

What if C2 is still large and C1 tunnels? Round 2: a C1 pair (three candles, holders for two wicks), or the fine adjustment on the fragrance side. For a step between C1 and C2, ask us on WhatsApp. We don't stock one.

Why did the "recommended" wick fail? A recommendation, whether from a chart, a jar listing or a wick page, is a starting rung, not a result. CSI's Cotton Braided page says "exceeding 8 cm", and 7.5 cm is below that. No in-stock CSI glass jar states 7.5 cm, so your jar's own test decides.
The short answer
The CSI answer: from Cotton Braided, test C2 (one size) and C1 (two sizes) together, with your current wick as the control: 9 candles in round 1.
The candle: 150 g at 8% = 12 g fragrance + 138 g wax (series convention for 7–7.5 cm jars, labelled), three candles per wick, burned to the end in 4-hour sessions.
The contingency: C2 still too strong and C1 tunnels → round 2, three C1-pair candles. Already on C2? One size smaller is C1, and nothing tabbed sits below it.
The buy list: Eco C2 10-pack ₹94.40 + Eco C1 20-pack ₹118.00 = ₹212.40; add a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) only as a CSI control if your current wick isn't ours.
One size or two? In CSI terms, test both CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs. There are no half-sizes. Cotton Braided your "recommended" wick ₹12.00 a wick Eco C2 (Thick) one size smaller ₹9.44 a wick Eco C1 (Thin) two sizes smaller ₹5.90 a wick Below C1: nothing tabbed. Between rungs: nothing tabbed. Finer steps: ask on WhatsApp. Illustrative round 1: 7.5 cm jar, 150 g at 8%, 3 candles each Cotton Braided C2 C1 C1 pair Flame at 2 h over 5 cm about 3 cm about 2 cm round 2 Full pool by 1.5 h about 3 h ring at burn 3 only if Depth at 4 h 2.2 cm 1.0 cm 0.5 cm C2 fails Soot card grey clean clean Verdict too strong candidate tunnels Numbers are a labelled worked example, not CSI data. Your three-candle results decide. Testing C2 and C1 together saves a whole round, about 10 days.
Top: CSI's three sized, tabbed wick rungs. From Cotton Braided, one size smaller is C2 and two sizes smaller is C1; there are no half-sizes, and nothing tabbed below C1. Bottom: an illustrative round 1 in a 7.5 cm jar, three candles per wick, all burned the same way. In this worked example the recommended Cotton Braided is too strong, C2 is the candidate and C1 tunnels, so the C1-pair round is never needed. Your own three-candle results may land differently; the point is that one round shows both steps.
Straight answer
My 7.5 cm jar has a huge flame with the recommended wick size. Should I test one or two sizes smaller?
Test both in the same round, beside your current wick. CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs, so from Cotton Braided "one size smaller" is Eco C2 and "two sizes smaller" is Eco C1. Testing them together costs ₹212.40 in wicks and about three extra candles of wax and oil. Testing them one after another costs a second cure and a second set of burns, roughly 10 more days, and you are more likely to stop at the first one that looks better rather than the one that is right. Pour 9 candles: three on your current wick, three on C2, three on C1, each 150 g at 8% (12 g fragrance + 138 g wax). Burn them in four-hour sessions in still air, to the end of the jar, and judge the top, middle and bottom separately. If C2 passes, it is usually the safer choice in a 7.5 cm jar. If C1 passes and C2 is still too strong, C1 it is. If C2 is still too strong and C1 tunnels, run a short second round with a C1 pair, or adjust on the fragrance side. The recommended wick was a starting rung. A huge flame that smokes or reaches towards the glass means stop that burn now; it isn't a result to sit through.
One line: from Cotton Braided, test C2 and C1 together beside your current wick, three 150 g candles each, to the end of the jar. Wicks: ₹212.40.
Both candidates, priced: Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40, 7 spare) and Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00, 11 spare even after the pair round) = ₹212.40. Both are in stock on 7 October 2026; the C1 10-pack is not.
Eco C1 / C2 — ₹212.40
A recommendation is someone else's guess about your candle. Your three candles are the answer.

Your symptom, stated exactly: a 7.5 cm jar, burning with the wick size you were told to use, and the flame is huge, well beyond the 2.5–5 cm many makers use as a practical rule of thumb. The recommendation might have come from a supplier's chart, a jar listing or a friend's candle. It was made without your wax, your oil, your load, your fill height or your room. Any of those can push the same jar from one wick to another.

CSI's own pages show how loose these recommendations are. The coloured 200 ml Salsa jar pages say "Pairs well with C2 Eco Wicks". Our tin container page, whose larger size is described as "7.5 cm x 5 cm", suggests "medium cotton or wooden wicks", and we sell no wick called "medium". Cotton Braided's page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". Each of those is a reasonable first rung to test. None is a burn result, and we wouldn't want you to treat ours as one. If your recommended wick is from another supplier's range, don't try to match its name to C1 or C2 either: wicks with similar names from different makers can burn quite differently (the supplier-change post). Treat your current wick as the control and test CSI's rungs against it.

Fragrance matters too, and it's a tendency rather than CSI data. The same 7.5 cm jar can need different wicks for a light floral and a dense vanilla or oud. That is why the 7.5 cm posts in our wick-diagnosis series exist: 7.5 cm lavender tunnelling for two burns, through to a 1 cm-deep pool at four hours. If you sell several scents in this jar, the wick that passes for one is a starting rung for the next, not an approval.

Safety first, plainly: a huge flame in a 7.5 cm jar puts heat close to the glass. Stop the burn if it smokes continuously, leans towards the wall, or the candle is burning near the base: extinguish it, let it set, trim and remove any cap before relighting. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer at fixed marked points (CSI lists none; our Pen Thermometer is for wax). The "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" wording on our 150 g jar pages is a pour limit, not a burn rating. No wick makes a candle "safe" or "soot-free".

Your 7.5 cm jar, measured both ways

"7.5 cm" can mean the inside or the outside. The two readings differ by about a fifth of the pool area.

Most listings give an outside or unstated diameter. Measure the inside at the wax surface and near the base. The two readings, using a 0.35 cm wall as a labelled assumption, are geometry rather than burn predictions:

7.5 cm, two readings · geometry only
Area = π r² on the inside diameter · hours to the glass = rule of thumb (about 1 h per 2.5 cm), very rough · wall 0.35 cm assumed
Reading Inside diameter Pool area Rough hours to reach the glass Single wick to wall C1 pair 3.0 cm apart: wick to wall
A: 7.5 cm is the inside 7.5 cm 44.18 cm² about 3.0 h 3.75 cm 2.25 cm
B: 7.5 cm is the outside 6.8 cm 36.32 cm² about 2.7 h 3.4 cm 1.9 cm

Reading A has 21.6% more pool to melt than reading B. That is why a wick recommended for "7.5 cm" can be right for one jar and far too strong for another. On either reading, the jar is below the "exceeding 8 cm" that Cotton Braided's page positions it for, so a huge flame from Cotton Braided here is unsurprising. On reading B, a C1 pair sits under 2 cm from the glass, which is why it's a round-2 contingency to test, not a default.

Be clear about what CSI lists near this size. No in-stock CSI glass jar states 7.5 cm. The Glass Jar With Bamboo Lid gives "W:7.5 cm" but is out of stock on 7 October 2026. Our tin container's larger size is "7.5 cm x 5 cm", and the page doesn't say which figure is the diameter. Our common 150 g glass jars give an outer diameter of about 7 cm. So your 7.5 cm jar is your own, and a result from our 7 cm jar is not a result for yours. A 5 mm change in jar diameter can be enough to justify a retest (the 7.5-to-8 cm retest post).

Before you buy: the cause ranking for a huge flame

Most of the time a huge flame on a recommended wick is simply too much wick. Rule out the free causes in an evening first.
Cause ranking · huge flame, 7.5 cm jar, recommended wick
Ranked for this pattern (judgement) · burning = how the candle is used · making = formulation and build · signs are common observations, not CSI burn data · ₹ CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Cause What you'd see Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Recommended rung too big for this jar and formula (making: wick size) Huge, steady flame after a correct trim; full pool very fast; deep pool; soot; fast wax loss C2 and C1 beside the current wick, three candles each Move down one or two rungs on the evidence ₹212.40
2. Long or capped wick (burning: trim) Flame shrinks after a 5–6 mm trim with the cap removed Trim by ruler, relight in still air Trim habit Nothing
3. Draught (burning: the room) Flare, flicker, lean; worse with the fan or AC on Repeat in still air Placement; care label Nothing
4. Oil or load (making: oil, load) Fine in one scent, huge in another on the same wick Same wick, one unscented candle Per-fragrance wick; a load test within both ceilings Your own wax
5. Jar is not the size you think (making: container) Inside diameter well under 7.5 cm; tapered base Measure inside at the top and near the base Wick for the real inside diameter Nothing

If the flame is too large even after a correct trim in still air and you want to prove it's oversized before buying anything, the trimmed-but-still-large post has the evidence rule. If it is fine for an hour and grows by hour three, start at the hub. This post assumes you are past that point and the question is simply how far to step down. Two exceptions: a huge flame over a pool that doesn't reach the glass is the tall-flame, short-pool problem, where stepping down backfires; and a full pool in well under an hour is weighed in the under-an-hour post.

The side-by-side plan: rounds, candles, approval

One round answers "one or two sizes". The second round exists only for the case where neither fits.
Test plan · 7.5 cm jar · 150 g at 8%

Pour round 1 in one sessionNine candles: 12 g fragrance + 138 g wax each, one wax lot, one oil lot, the same pour temperature (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464's page: "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; if your jar states a lower pour limit, that governs). Centre every wick with a holder and label the bases.
2
Cure together3 days or more (many oil pages state 48–72 hours for soy), all nine in the same room, so their ages match at burn 1.
3
Burn 4-hour sessions, side by sideStill air, candles well apart on heat-safe surfaces, trimmed to 5–6 mm by ruler each session. Log flame height at 1, 2, 3 and 4 h, pool width until it reaches the glass, depth at 4 h with a skewer, a soot card at 3 h, grams lost per session, and glass at 4 h with your own non-contact thermometer.
4
Go to the end of the jarStop with about 1 cm of wax left (a common rule of thumb). Mark the jar in thirds and judge each third separately: the bottom of a 7.5 cm jar is where a wick that seemed right at the top can run hot (why a size-down needs later burns).
5
Decide with the table below, then round 2 only if neededWorked example for the calendar: at 6 g an hour, a 150 g candle is about 25 hours, so 7 four-hour sessions, and with the cure about 10 days per round.

C2 C1 Decision
Passes Tunnels C2: one size smaller was the answer
Passes Passes Usually C2 in a 7.5 cm jar if its pool reaches the glass more reliably from burn two; choose C1 only if C2 runs deep or hot in the bottom third
Still too strong Passes C1: two sizes smaller was the answer
Still too strong Tunnels Round 2: C1 pair; or the fragrance side (load within both ceilings); or ask us about a finer step
Tunnels Tunnels The "huge flame" wasn't wick size: recheck trim, draught and oil (6904)
The approval rule (ours, labelled)
A wick is approved for this 7.5 cm jar and this oil when all three candles, in the top, middle and bottom thirds, at four-hour sessions in still air: hold a flame inside your written band (2.5–5 cm is a common starting point) with no visible smoke; reach the glass by about hour three from burn two (the rough rule of thumb puts this jar at 2.7–3.0 h); keep the pool at or under your depth limit (about 1–1.5 cm is common) at hour four; and keep glass readings inside your own written limit, with the flame never near the wall. One failure in any candle fails the wick. This is an in-house protocol, not an industry standard.

Why test both at once, in rupees. Adding C1 to round 1 costs three more candles: about ₹70.02 of CSI 464 and ₹41.06 of British Rose each (₹111.08 a candle, your jar extra), so ₹333.24 for three, or ₹451.24 with the C1 20-pack. Leaving it out risks a second round of about 10 days, 20 in all, if C2 turns out still too strong. With festive orders waiting, that trade is usually easy. How many rungs to test in general is the adjacent-sizes post's subject; in CSI's short range, the answer for a 7.5 cm jar on Cotton Braided is simply "both of the other two".

The CSI buy list and the production step

CSI C1 Nothing tabbed — Recheck trim, draught, oil and load first —

CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, no smaller sized, tabbed wick than C1, and one wooden-wick listing with no widths. The untabbed options (Eco Braided Wicks by the metre, the Braided Wick Roll with 100 tabs at ₹706.82, and the Eco Candle Wicks Loose, "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters") are cut-to-length constructions, not half-sizes. If your 7.5 cm jar falls between C1 and C2, we would rather tell you than sell you a third pack.

Argued against our own interest: you don't need the Cotton Braided 10-pack if you are already burning ours. It's your control, and you have it. Nor do you need more than ₹212.40 in wicks for the whole plan. Stepping down also cuts your wick bill: at a worked-example 200 candles a month plus 2% (204 wicks), Cotton Braided would be ₹2,520.00 a month (2 × 100 + 10), C2 ₹1,982.40 (210 wicks) and C1 ₹1,298.00 (2 × 100 + 20). That is ₹537.60 a month less on C2 than on Cotton Braided. Nice, but never the reason to pick a wick: the full-life result is.

Buy production wicks only after approval, by the month; reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock. CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. If a later delivery burns differently, retest before production (compare wick lots).

Don't do this: don't jump straight to two sizes smaller without one size beside it: if C1 tunnels, you'll be back to testing C2 anyway, a round late. Don't wick down blindly into tunnelling, either. A smaller wick that leaves a ring at burn three is a fail, however calm its flame. Don't keep the recommended wick and print "trim every hour": customers burn for an evening. Don't buy 500 C2 after one good burn on the top third. Wait for three candles at the bottom of the jar.
Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. One round takes about 10 days; two in sequence about 20. That is the practical case for testing C2 and C1 together this week. When a wick passes, send us your monthly count on WhatsApp for stock, dispatch and a GST invoice.

From Cotton Braided, C2 is one size smaller and C1 two, and those are the only two tabbed steps CSI has below it. Buy both and test them in the same round. In the text we captured, the page states no length, width or jar-diameter range for either, and claims "minimal soot or smoke" (its words). If your "recommended" wick is CSI's Cotton Braided, read its page closely: it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". Only needed if round 1 ends with C2 too strong and C1 tunnelling. The page describes a "3-hole layout fits single, double, or triple wick setups" and says it fits jars "up to 9 cm wide", which covers a 7.5 cm jar. In the text we captured it does not state the hole spacing, so measure the outer holes before you trust them for a 3.0 cm pair. ₹50.00 a holder in every pack. Limitation: a pair in a jar this size puts each flame close to the glass (1.9 cm on the narrower reading). Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram)
Listed because many readers with a "7.5 cm" jar are measuring something like this, and it is not 7.5 cm. The page gives an outer diameter of approx. 7 cm, a base of approx. 6.5 cm, a 150 g fill capacity and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C", which is a pour limit, not a burn rating. With CSI 464 (pour 80–90°C), that means pouring at 80–85°C. It costs ₹94.40 a jar in packs of 10 or 20. Argued against our own interest: don't switch jars mid-test. A wick approved in this 7 cm jar is not approved for your 7.5 cm jar, or the other way round.

For a 7.5 cm jar with a huge flame on Cotton Braided: C2 and C1 side by side, beside your current wick, three 150 g candles each, to the end of the jar. ₹212.40 in wicks.
"A recommended wick is where testing starts. It was never where testing ends."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, holders, oil, wax and jars named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that our own Cotton Braided page positions it above a 7.5 cm jar, that you don't need a Cotton Braided pack if you already own the wick, that no in-stock CSI glass jar is 7.5 cm, and that we have no tabbed size between C1 and C2.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack and the Glass Jar With Bamboo Lid are out of stock and are not offered; every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including "exceeding 8 cm", "Pairs well with C2 Eco Wicks", "medium cotton or wooden wicks", "up to 9 cm wide" and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C".

The flame band (2.5–5 cm), depth (about 1–1.5 cm), one hour per 2.5 cm of width and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. The 0.35 cm wall, 3.0 cm pair spacing, 6 g/h, round timings, outcome grid and 200 candles a month are labelled worked examples; the approval rule is an in-house protocol. Fragrance effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What wick size for a 7.5 cm candle jar?
There is no single answer: wax, oil, load, fill height and the jar's real inside diameter all change it. Treat any recommendation as a starting rung and test it beside one and two sizes smaller, three candles each, to the end of the jar.
Should I go down one wick size or two if the flame is too big?
Test both in the same round, beside your current wick. One size down may be enough; two may tunnel. Testing them together saves a second round. In CSI's range, from Cotton Braided that means C2 and C1.
Is Cotton Braided too big for a 7.5 cm jar?
Its CSI page says it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", so a 7.5 cm jar is below its stated positioning. Test C2 and C1 against it before deciding.
What is the difference between C1 and C2 wicks?
C1 is sold as Thin and C2 as Thick. The page states no length, width or jar range for either, so the only reliable difference is the one your burn test shows. C1 is ₹5.90 and C2 ₹9.44 a wick at every pack.
My candle tunnels with C1 but C2 is too big. What now?
CSI has no tabbed wick between them. Test a C1 pair, adjust the fragrance load within both ceilings, or ask us on WhatsApp about another construction.
How many test candles do I need to choose a wick?
At least three per wick, beside three of your current wick, burned to about 1 cm from the base with the top, middle and bottom judged separately. For a 7.5 cm jar on Cotton Braided, that's nine candles in round one.
7.5 cm jar, huge flame, recommended wick
Test one size and two sizes smaller together, beside your current wick, to the end of the jar.
From Cotton Braided that is Eco C2 and Eco C1: ₹212.40 for every wick the plan needs. If neither fits, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll say plainly what we stock between them, and what we don't.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster "Flame Is Too Large" (6901–6920) in the series on large flames, soot, smoke, mushrooming and wick purchase. It answers whether to test one or two wick sizes smaller in a 7.5 cm jar with a huge flame on the recommended wick: CSI's three-rung ladder, why a recommendation is a starting rung, the jar measured two ways, a cause-ranking table, a side-by-side two-round test with an in-house approval rule, and a CSI buy list with a production step.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Black Glass Jar with Black Lid (150 gram) (Deliveries Starting 5th Dec), British Rose Fragrance Oil, Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Coconut Soy Wax. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the burn and wick advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Soumili Gope, Biny Abraham, Arshad Shaikh, Manasa GN. Non-price figures: "7.5 cm", "huge flame" and "the recommended wick size" are the reader's figures (title). The 150 g fill at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax, load as a percentage of total weight) is the series convention for 7–7.5 cm jars, labelled. Wax ceiling as the page states (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%), a formulation limit, not a regulatory one; British Rose's page states up to 10% in soy. Pool areas (44.18 and 36.32 cm²) use π r² on the inside diameter with a 0.35 cm wall assumed for reading B; the flame band, depth limit, about one hour per 2.5 cm (2.7–3.0 h here) and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. The outcome grid, 6 g/h, round timings, 3.0 cm spacing and 200 candles a month are worked examples. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
