CSI Wick Diagnosis · Flame Too Large
Beautiful at hour one, 3 cm and smoking by hour three. That is growth, and growth has four usual causes. Two of them cost nothing to rule out. Here is the order to check them, the test that proves over-wicking, and the smallest CSI wick order that settles it.

Quick answers — read this first
My candle burns beautifully for an hour, then by hour three the flame is 3 cm tall and smoking. Is the wick too large? Possibly, but not yet proven. A flame that grows with burn time has four usual causes, most likely first: a longer or mushroomed wick; a deepening pool feeding a wick too strong for the jar (over-wicking); a draught; or a heavy oil or high load. 3 cm alone sits inside the common 2.5–5 cm rule of thumb: the growth and the smoke are the warning.

What do I check first? Stop that burn. Next time, trim to 5–6 mm and burn four hours in still air (fans and AC off, away from vents). Flame holds its hour-one size without smoke: it was wick length or air. It grows back and smokes by hour three: go to check 2.

How do I prove over-wicking? Log flame height, pool depth and mushroom at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours. A pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm by hour three (rule of thumb), with the flame rising as it deepens, means the wick is too strong. A big mushroom over a normal pool points to the oil, load or wick construction.

What do I buy? Your current rung against one CSI rung down, three candles each, burned to the end. From C2, the C1 20-pack (₹118.00) covers three single-C1 and three C1-pair candles. From Cotton Braided, add a C2 10-pack: ₹212.40. CSI has no half-sizes between C1, C2 and Cotton Braided. Buy nothing for production until three full-life candles pass.
The short answer
The diagnosis: a flame that grows from hour one to hour three is being fed by something: a longer wick or a mushroom, a deepening pool, a draught, or a heavy oil. The smoke tells you the flame is taking up more fuel than it burns cleanly.
Check 1 (free): trim to 5–6 mm, burn in still air for 4 hours. Flame stays small: it was the length or the air. Flame grows back: keep going.
Check 2: log flame height, pool depth, mushroom and wick length at 1/2/3/4 h. Deep pool plus growth means over-wicked. Mushroom over a normal pool means oil, load or construction.
Check 3: step down one CSI rung (Cotton Braided → C2 → C1, or C2 pair → C1 pair). Burn three 200 g candles per candidate in 4-hour sessions to the end, and approve only if every candle passes in the top, middle and bottom thirds.
Flame height by burn hour: what the log shows Illustrative pattern, not CSI test data. Your own log decides. 2.5–5 cm: a rule of thumb flame height (cm) 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 0 1 h 2 h 3 h 4 h burn hour (4-hour session, trimmed to 5–6 mm, still air) hour 1: all three look fine Current rung +0.9 cm, smokes at 3 h One rung down +0.2 cm, steady, clean Two rungs down small: check the pool 3 cm + smoke The three checks, in order 1 · Trim + still air Trim to 5–6 mm, fans off, relight, burn 4 hours. Small: length or air. 2 · Log 1, 2, 3, 4 h Flame, pool depth, mushroom, wick, soot card. Deep pool: too strong. 3 · One rung down 3 candles each, full life: top, middle, bottom. All pass: approve. Smoke, or growth in still air after a correct trim: stop and fix.
Top: an illustrative flame-height log for three wick candidates in the same jar, trimmed to 5–6 mm and burned in still air. At hour one they look alike. The current rung keeps growing and smokes from hour three, although 3 cm is still inside the 2.5–5 cm rule-of-thumb band. That is why the band on its own is not a pass mark. One rung down holds steady. Two rungs down stays small, so its melt pool has to be checked for tunnelling. Bottom: the three checks, in the order that wastes the least money.
Straight answer
My candle burns beautifully for the first hour, but after three hours the flame is 3 cm tall and starting to smoke. Is my wick too large?
It might be, but growth over three hours has more than one cause, and two cost nothing to rule out. By hour three the pool is wider and deeper, the wick may have grown or capped with carbon (a "mushroom"), and the jar and room are warmer. Rule out wick length and air first: trim to 5–6 mm and burn for four hours in still air. If the flame holds its hour-one size without smoke, you have a trimming or draught problem, not a wick-size problem. Then measure: flame height, pool depth, mushroom and wick length at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours. A pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm by hour three, with the flame rising as it deepens, is the over-wicking signature. A large mushroom over a normal pool points to the oil, the load or the wick construction. Only then step down one CSI rung (Cotton Braided → C2 → C1), with three candles per candidate burned to the end, and judge the top, middle and bottom of the jar separately. A tall, smoking flame means stop and fix: don't let it run to see what happens.
One line: trim and still the air (free), log the pool at 1/2/3/4 h, then test one CSI rung down on three candles to the end. From C2 that costs ₹118.00 in wicks.
The one-rung-down test, priced: from C2, one Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00); from Cotton Braided, an Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40) plus the C1 20-pack, ₹212.40 together. Every wick pack named here is in stock on 7 October 2026; the C1 10-pack is not.

What changes between hour one and hour three

A flame doesn't grow by itself. Something is feeding it.

In the first hour the pool is small and shallow and the wick freshly trimmed, so almost any wick looks good. Four things change after that, and each makes the flame taller. The pool widens and then deepens. Once it reaches the glass it can only go down, and a deeper pool keeps more liquid fuel and heat around the wick. The wick's exposed length changes. If the wax drops faster than the wick burns away, more wick stands above the pool, and carbon can collect on the tip as a mushroom. The jar and the air above it warm up. The room changes: a fan or AC comes on, or a door opens, and the flame starts to flicker and smoke.

Read your two numbers carefully. Many makers treat about 2.5–5 cm as a practical flame height (a rule of thumb, not a standard), so 3 cm alone is no fault. What matters is that it grew, and smokes. In still air, a well-matched wick commonly settles early in the burn and then stays roughly steady. Visible smoke during the burn means the flame is drawing more fuel than it burns completely. A wisp of smoke when you put it out is different, and normal.

The deepening pool most often turns "beautiful at hour one" into "too big at hour three"; it has its own post, flame normal at lighting, bigger as the pool deepens, with the skewer method for measuring depth. If your candle behaves well for several burns and the flame only grows lower in the jar, that is late-burn heat: start with the late-burn flame-growth hub and this series' late-jar heat hub (6961).

Safety first, plainly: a tall, smoking flame is a safety problem before it is a quality problem. Stop the burn: extinguish it, let the candle cool and set completely, then trim and remove the mushroom before you relight. Never judge glass heat by touch. Use your own non-contact thermometer at the same marked points every time. CSI lists no non-contact thermometer and no snuffer; our Pen Thermometer is for wax. The "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" wording on our 150 g jar pages is a pour limit, not a burn rating. A flame approaching the glass wall, or burning close to the base at the end of the jar, means stop. No wick change makes a candle "safe" or "soot-free", and nobody should promise you one.

The four causes, ranked, and the test that separates them

Two causes are how the candle is burned; two are how it was made. Rule out the free ones first.

The ranking is our judgement for exactly your pattern, and it is also the cheapest order to test.

Cause ranking · flame fine at hour one, 3 cm and smoking by hour three
Ranked by likelihood for this pattern and by cost to test (judgement) · signs are common observations, not CSI burn data · ₹ from CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Cause What you'd see by hour three Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Wick too long / mushroom (burning: trimming; sometimes construction) Carbon ball on the tip, tall flickering flame, smoke when the cap glows; pool depth normal Cool, trim to 5–6 mm, remove the cap, relight in still air: flame back to hour-one size and clean for the next hour Trim before every burn. If it needs a mid-burn trim to stay clean, treat it as cause 2 or 4 Nothing, or a cutter from ₹177.00
2. Pool deepening feeds an oversized wick (making: wick size) Full pool early, pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm by hour three, flame height tracking depth, fast wax loss, warm glass high up Depth log at 1/2/3/4 h and weigh before and after (g/h), against one rung down in identical candles Step down one CSI rung; three candles, full life ₹118.00 (C1 20-pack, from C2) or ₹94.40 (C2 10-pack, from Cotton Braided)
3. Draught (burning: the room) Flicker, lean, a one-sided pool, soot streaks on one side; worse when a fan, AC or open window is on Repeat in still air, fans and AC off, away from vents and windows; same candle, same trim Burn location; a clear line on your care instructions Nothing
4. Heavy oil or high load (making: oil, load) Mushroom building by hour two or three over a normal-depth pool; smoke with vanilla, dark gourmand or resinous oils; the same wick fine in a lighter oil Same wick and jar: your oil against a lighter oil or an unscented candle; then one rung down in the heavy oil A per-fragrance wick, or a lower load tested within both ceilings ₹270.00 (Lavender 50 g, 3 control candles)

Just outside this pattern: lower-third problems are late-burn heat (6961); black marks without flame growth are the soot hub (6921); a mushroom as the main event is the mushrooming hub (6941).

Cause 3 is underrated in Indian homes: ceiling fans and AC vents commonly make a correct wick flicker and smoke. If the hour-three smoke starts when the fan goes on, that is your answer; the flicker-or-airflow post has the no-cost check. Cause 4 is a tendency, not CSI data: vanilla-rich, resinous and dark gourmand oils commonly build more carbon than light oils, and load changes can move a wick either way (lavender fine, vanilla huge and bigger flame after lowering the load). No CSI oil page gives soot or wick data in the text we captured, and we have none.

The three checks, and what each result means

Each check either closes the case or tells you exactly what to test next.
The three-check sequence · what each result points to

Flame grows back and smokes by hour three, even in still air Not burning behaviour: the wick, oil or load Check 2
2. Log at 1/2/3/4 h Flame height, pool depth and width, mushroom, wick length, soot card, grams lost (method below) Pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm by hour three; flame rises as the pool deepens; small mushroom Over-wicking (cause 2) Check 3: one rung down

How to take the measurements
Flame: a ruler stood behind the candle (not touching), photographed level with the flame, wick tip to flame top. Pool depth: a bamboo skewer dipped straight down midway between wick and glass; measure the wet length (labelled method; detail in 6902). Mushroom: photograph the tip beside the ruler. Soot: a white card held briefly above the flame, photographed. Consumption: weigh before and after each session; grams per hour is your own baseline (CSI publishes none). Glass: your own non-contact thermometer at the same marked points.
Don't hide a bad wick behind trimming instructions. If check 1 only works because you trimmed at hour two, the wick is too strong for how real people burn candles. Customers trim once, if at all, and burn for an evening. Before you close the case on cause 1, start one candle at 10 mm of exposed wick and see whether it still holds by hour three: the untrimmed-tolerance test sets that up properly. Don't wick down blindly either. If the pool at hour three is shallow and short of the glass, a smaller wick will tunnel. That contradiction is 6903's job.

The controlled test plan: candles, sessions, measurements, approval

One burn is a hint. Three candles burned to the end is evidence.

This is check 3 in full. It uses the series' default test candle, labelled: 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax (load as a percentage of total candle weight), poured in your jar. If your candle has a different fill, keep your fill and scale the grams. Three candles per candidate is the minimum that separates the wick from one odd candle, and every candidate needs its full life because many wicks that are fine on the top third become too strong lower in the jar (why the whole candle is tested).

1
Make every candle the same except the wickSame wax, oil lot, load, fill and pour temperature (your wax page's figure: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C" and "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"), poured the same day, every wick centred. Cure them together: Vanilla Bean's page says "48–72 hours for soy wax", and many makers also test at day 7 and 14. Compare candles of the same age.
2
Choose the candidates: your current rung and one downYour current wick is the control. From Cotton Braided: Cotton Braided, C2, C1. From C2: C2, C1, and a C1 pair in case single C1 tunnels. Three candles each, 9 in total. Never test only the smaller wick: without the control beside it, you can't tell the wick from the day.
3
Set up a still, recorded roomFans and AC off, away from vents and windows, candles spaced well apart on a heat-safe surface so the flames don't heat each other, and room temperature written down.
4
Burn 4-hour sessions and log at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hMany care labels advise burning no more than about four hours at a time, so test the longest burn a customer is likely to give it. Trim to 5–6 mm before each session, weigh before and after, and let the candle cool and set fully between sessions. Stop any session where the flame smokes continuously or approaches the glass, and record it as a fail.
5
Burn to the end, and judge each third separatelyMark the jar into top, middle and bottom thirds. Stop at about 1 cm of wax left (a common rule of thumb) and record where each flame finished. Worked example: at 7 g an hour (your scale decides), 200 g is about 28.6 hours, so roughly 7 four-hour sessions per candle, all 9 burning side by side.
6
Apply your acceptance rule, then decideA candidate passes only if all three candles pass in all three thirds. If two rungs pass, choose the one whose pool reaches the glass reliably from burn two with the calmer flame. If none passes, that is information too: move to a pair, or to the oil.
The log sheet · per candle, per session
Limits are an in-house protocol you set and write down before you start, not industry standards · the flame band and pool depth are rules of thumb
Measure How When Suggested starting limit (yours to set)

Mushroom Photo beside a ruler 4 h, before trimming A width you set from round one (for example about 3 mm), held in every third
Pool depth Skewer, midway 1, 2, 3, 4 h No deeper than about 1.5 cm at hour four
Pool width Photo Each hour Reaches the glass by about hour 3–4 from burn two
Grams per hour Weigh before and after Each session Steady; a sharp rise lower down is a warning
Glass Your non-contact thermometer, marked points 4 h, every third Your own written limit; flame never near the wall
End of life Ruler, photo Last session Flame finishes with about 1 cm of wax left, well clear of the base
The approval rule (ours, labelled)
A candidate is approved when all three candles meet every limit you wrote down, in the top, middle and bottom thirds, at four-hour sessions in still air. One smoking session or one hot-glass reading in any candle fails the candidate, and you go back to the cause table rather than averaging it away. This is an in-house protocol, not an industry standard. Write your limits on the sheet before the first burn so the results can't move them.

The CSI wick buy list, and the step to production

Our wick range is short. That makes the buying easy, and it makes the gaps important.

CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided. "One size down" means Cotton Braided → C2, C2 → C1, or a C2 pair → a C1 pair. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, no smaller sized, tabbed wick than C1, and only one wooden-wick listing, with no widths. The untabbed options (Eco Braided Wicks by the metre, the Braided Wick Roll with 100 tabs, and the Eco Candle Wicks Loose, whose page says "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters") are cut-to-length constructions, not half-sizes. If your test lands between rungs, we would rather say so than sell the wrong one: ask on WhatsApp, test a pair, or make the fine adjustment on the fragrance side.

Argued against our own interest: you may not need new wicks at all. If check 1 fixes the candle, your spend is a cutter, or nothing. And because C1 (₹5.90), C2 (₹9.44) and Cotton Braided (₹12.00) cost the same per wick at every pack, a bigger pack buys you no saving, only stock. Stepping down saves a little (C2 → C1 ₹3.54 a candle; Cotton Braided → C2 ₹2.56), but that is a side effect, never the reason.

The step to production quantity

Once a rung has passed on three full-life candles, production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 300 single-wick candles a month with a 2% allowance is 306 C1 wicks. Buy 3 × 100 + 20 = 320 for ₹1,888.00. A 500-pack (₹2,950.00) costs the same ₹5.90 a wick, ties up ₹1,062.00 more cash and leaves 194 wicks on the shelf. If C2 passes instead, 310 C2 wicks are ₹2,926.40. Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock. CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp before you set yours. A change of wick lot or supplier later is a formula change: retest it (compare wick lots, why a first burn after a size change is not enough).

Don't buy 1,000 wicks after one burn. The 1,000-packs are ₹5,900.00 (C1), ₹9,440.00 (C2) and ₹12,000.00 (Cotton Braided), with no per-wick saving on any of them. One good evening on the top third proves nothing about the bottom third. Buy the 20-pack, pass three candles to the end, then buy by the month. The economics of a smaller wick versus a trimmer in the box is the smokes-when-long post.
Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. A full test (a 3-day cure, then about seven daily 4-hour sessions) takes about 10 days before you know which wick to produce with. If a festive batch depends on this fix, pour the test candles this week and send us your production wick count on WhatsApp so we can confirm stock and dispatch, with a GST invoice.

The two smallest rungs of CSI's ladder. The page claims "minimal soot or smoke"; that can only describe a wick correctly sized and trimmed for its jar. C1 costs ₹5.90 a wick and C2 ₹9.44 at every pack size. Argued against our own interest: the 20-pack of C1 (₹118.00) covers a full C2 → C1 test including three C1 pairs; nothing bigger buys you a cheaper wick. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The top rung of CSI's sized, tabbed cotton wicks. The page says it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", claims "optimal flame height, preventing tunneling", and gives "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm". Read the first line carefully: if your jar is 8 cm or narrower and this is your wick, the page's own positioning puts it above your jar, and C2 is the first rung to test. It costs ₹12.00 a wick at every pack. Limitation: there is no tabbed rung between it and C2, so if C2 tunnels and this one smokes, the answer is a pair of smaller wicks or a formula change, not a size we do not sell.

Candle Wick Cutter | Candle Wick Trimmer
Check 1 is free if your scissors reach into the jar; a cutter gives a clean, repeatable 5–6 mm cut and lifts the mushroom out instead of dropping it in the pool. CSI lists three: two Candle Wick Cutters (3 cm and 5.5 cm blades) and a Candle Wick Trimmer with a debris catcher, whose page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn" (about 6 mm) and "Perfect Length: Ensures optimal flame height" (the page's claim). Argued against our own interest: if trimming fixes your candle, this ₹177.00 cutter is the whole purchase. If it does not, no trimmer will, and you should not ask customers to trim mid-burn to make a strong wick behave.
Listing Price Stock Why
Candle Wick Cutter, 3 cm blade ₹177.00 In stock the cheapest way to a 5–6 mm trim
Candle Wick Cutter, 5.5 cm blade ₹295.00 In stock longer blade for deeper jars
Candle Wick Trimmer, debris catcher ₹588.82 In stock page: "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn"
The cheapest trimmer is ₹177.00; the test never needs the dearest. Buy cutter — ₹177.00

Performance Wooden Wicks | Imported
CSI sells one wooden-wick listing with no width options: "One Pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs". There is no narrower wooden wick to step down to. Options: a lower trim, checking the seating in the tab, or moving that jar to cotton (C2 or Cotton Braided) (the wooden-wick post). Wooden is the only tabbed wick here that gets cheaper in bulk (₹59.00 → ₹41.30 a wick); the 50-pack's "Save 25%" label works out at 20%. Limitation: wood versus C2 adds ₹49.56 a candle at the 10-pack price.
Pack Price Per wick Note
Pack of 10 ₹590.00 ₹59.00 the test pack
Pack of 50 (labelled "Save 25%") ₹2,360.00 ₹47.20 20% less per wick
Pack of 100 (labelled "Save 30%") ₹4,130.00 ₹41.30 30% less per wick

Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil
For the fourth cause. The page describes "Creamy, sweet vanilla with subtle caramel undertones", states a load "Up to 10% for soy wax" (8% is inside it, and inside Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464's "Up to 10%"), "Vanillin Content: 2.5%", "Cure Time: 48–72 hours for soy wax", and under wicks: "Cotton or wooden wicks for a steady and even burn. Wick testing is recommended based on your container size and wax type." Heavy oils commonly build more carbon than light ones (a tendency, not CSI data). Argued against our own interest: buy it only if vanilla is in your range or you want to test your heaviest scent; your problem candle's own oil is the one to test. For an oud, Woody Oud (page: "candles (6-10%)") is ₹4.53/g at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg alike, ₹72.50 of oil per candle.
Size Price Per gram 200 g candles at 8% (16 g) Oil per candle
15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.67 none (a sniff sample) ₹138.67
50 g ₹410.00 ₹8.20 3 ₹131.20
100 g ₹790.00 ₹7.90 6 ₹126.40
500 g ₹3,840.00 ₹7.68 31 ₹122.88
1 kg ₹7,646.00 ₹7.65 62 ₹122.34

Wick Centering Device (Pack of 5)
An off-centre wick heats one wall and leans, and an off-centre test candle tells you nothing about wick size. These are wooden bars with a single 4 mm hole ("Hole Dia 0,15" (4mm)"), for openings the page gives as "less than 4"" (about 10 cm), so they hold one wick, not a pair. Limitation: for the C1-pair candidates you need a holder with more than one slot, such as the Steel Wick Holder (Set of 5, ₹250.00), whose page states a "3-hole layout" but no hole spacing: measure it before you trust it.
Pack Price Per holder For this test
Pack of 5 ₹118.00 ₹23.60 2 packs (₹236.00) hold 9 test candles poured together
₹23.60 a holder, reusable. Buy 5 — ₹118.00

Skip for now: any 500- or 1,000-pack before approval; a new oil "to see if it burns cleaner" while the wick is unresolved (change one variable at a time); the 5.5 cm cutter and the trimmer if the ₹177.00 cutter reaches your wick; and Cotton Braided, if your jar is 8 cm or narrower and you are already on C2.

Map of this cluster: 6901–6920

This hub owns the hour-by-hour diagnosis, the three checks and the one-rung-down test. Each sibling owns one version of "my flame is too large".

Cluster map · 6902–6920
Pool and power (6902–6907) · flame, scent and wax use (6908–6911) · batch and supplier (6912–6913) · formulation (6914–6915) · wick systems (6916–6918) · standards and diagnosis (6919–6920)
No. What the post answers (linked)
6902 Flame normal at lighting, bigger as the pool deepens: the pool-depth mechanism and the skewer method.
6903 Very tall flame, pool short of the glass: why wicking down can create a second problem.
6904 Still too large after a correct trim: confirming an oversized wick with depth, grams per hour and soot.
6905 7.5 cm jar, huge flame on the "recommended" wick: one size smaller or two, side by side.
6906 Full pool in under an hour and a very active flame: when speed is evidence and when it is not.
6907 Deep pool very quickly: separating wick power from wax, fragrance and room effects.
6908 Large flame, weak hot throw: why a bigger flame does not mean more fragrance.
6909 Large flame and a harsh smell while burning: is heat changing the scent character?
6910 Wax disappearing too fast: measure grams per hour and fix the wick before the wax.
6911 A 200 g candle that runs out early: burn-hour maths and honest label claims.
6912 Taller flame than the last batch of the same formula: compare wick lots first.
6913 New cotton-wick supplier, bigger flame: why similar names are not similar wicks.
6914 Fine with lavender, huge with vanilla: fragrance composition and per-fragrance wick specs.
6915 Bigger flame after lowering the fragrance load: formulation moves the wick both ways.
6916 Wooden wick, extremely tall flame: CSI's one width, a lower trim, or a move to cotton.
6917 Double wick, two large flames: reduce both sizes before removing one.
6918 Three wicks burning aggressively: fewer or smaller, by area per wick and wall distance.
6919 Impressive or acceptable: the criteria for a controlled, commercial flame.
6920 The six-measurement diagnosis sheet and scoring rule for an oversized flame.

Outside this series: one wick or two in wide jars, one larger wick or two smaller; a full pool in 45 minutes, the speed-without-symptoms checklist; every wick symptom in one tree, the systematic diagnosis capstone; growth as the wax falls, the trimmed-versus-untrimmed twin test; and new jars, why the final third is tested.

The CSI principle
Rule out what's free before you buy anything. Then test one rung down against the wick you have, to the end of the jar.
For a flame that's beautiful at hour one and 3 cm and smoking by hour three: trim and still the air, log the pool at 1/2/3/4 h, then three candles per candidate. From C2 the wicks cost ₹118.00.
"Don't judge a wick by its first hour. Judge it at hour four, and at the bottom of the jar."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, oils and tools named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you the first check is free, our bigger wick packs cost no less per wick, we have no half-sizes and one wooden width, and you should not buy production quantities before three full-life candles pass.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used, and every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke" and the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm".

The flame band (2.5–5 cm), pool-depth limit (about 1–1.5 cm), 1 cm wax floor and the hour-per-2.5 cm guide are common rules of thumb. The acceptance limits, the 7 g/h consumption, the 300-a-month order and the 2% allowance are labelled examples or our judgement. Fragrance effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. Frequently asked questions

Why does my candle flame get bigger the longer it burns?
Something feeds it: a longer or carbon-capped wick, a pool deepening around a wick too strong for the jar, a draught, or a heavy oil. Trim to 5–6 mm and burn in still air first; if it still grows by hour three, log pool depth and mushroom each hour.
Is a 3 cm candle flame too big?
Not on its own: many makers use about 2.5–5 cm as a practical range (a rule of thumb, not a standard). A 3 cm flame that grew and smokes is a problem; a steady, clean one may be fine.
How do I know if my candle wick is too big?
After trimming to 5–6 mm in still air, an oversized wick commonly shows a flame that rises as the pool deepens, a pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm by hour three, fast wax loss and smoke. Confirm by burning three candles of one size smaller alongside three of your current size, to the end of the jar.
What wick size is smaller than C2?
At CSI, Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1). There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2, or between C2 and Cotton Braided. The C1 20-pack is ₹118.00 (₹5.90 a wick); the 10-pack is out of stock on 7 October 2026. If you need a step finer than C1 to C2, ask us on WhatsApp.
Why does my candle start smoking after a few hours?
Usually a long or mushroomed wick, a deepening pool feeding an oversized wick, a fan or AC draught, or a heavy oil or high load. Stop, cool, trim and retest in still air before changing the wick.
How many candles should I burn to test a new wick size?
At least three per candidate, beside three of your current wick, in 4-hour sessions, burned to about 1 cm from the bottom, with the top, middle and bottom thirds judged separately. One good burn is not approval.
Flame fine at hour one, 3 cm and smoking by hour three
Rule out the trim and the air, measure the pool, then test one CSI rung down to the end of the jar.
From C2 the wicks for the whole test cost ₹118.00; from Cotton Braided, ₹212.40. If neither rung fits your jar, tell us on WhatsApp, and we will say plainly what we stock between them, and what we don't.

Trim length 5–6 mm (one trimmer page says 1/4 inch); flame band 2.5–5 cm, pool depth about 1–1.5 cm, the 1 cm wax floor and about one hour per 2.5 cm of diameter (7 cm ≈ 2.8 h, 8 cm ≈ 3.1 h) are common rules of thumb.
