When a business should buy small

A business buys small for a reason. The four common ones are listed below, with the size that usually fits each. The key idea is that the right small size depends on how many grams the job actually needs, and that the 50 g, not the 15 g, is often the better small bottle once a job needs more than one candle's worth of oil.

The pattern is simple. The 15 g is for questions: does this oil work, does this client like it. The 50 g and 100 g are for answers: candles you will actually sell. Buying small for a job that needs production quantities is where the premium hurts, and the rest of this page measures how much.

The small-quantity premium, oil by oil

Fifty-five oils in the collection list both a 15 g and a 100 g. Dividing each price by its weight and comparing gives the premium: how much more a gram costs in the small bottle. The median is 23.1%, but the spread matters more than the middle.

Two patterns sit inside the table. First, the steepest premiums fall on the cheapest oils. British Rose, Citrus Lemon and Cucumber Green Tea are among the lowest-priced oils at 100 g, but their 15 g testers are priced much like everyone else's, between ₹81.42 and ₹94.40. The tester price looks flat across the catalogue; the production price does not. Second, the mildest premiums fall on premium oils: White Royal Oud, the vanillas, Tangerine and the Signature Grade range carry 7% to 12%. If you are testing an expensive oil, the tester is close to a fair price per gram. If you are testing a cheap one, you are paying mostly for the bottle.

The crossover: when 100 g is cheaper outright

Divide the 100 g price by the 15 g price and round up. The answer is how many testers cost as much as, or more than, one 100 g bottle, which holds 100 g against their 45 to 105 g. If you will need that many testers' worth of a scent, the 100 g is cheaper in plain rupees, not only per gram.

Across the 50 oils with both sizes in stock, the crossover is six testers for 24 oils and seven for 11. For the other 15 it comes sooner: five testers for eight oils, four for six, and three for one. So a rule of thumb that works for the whole catalogue is this: if a scent will need more than three testers' worth, price the 100 g first. For most oils you will still be ahead at four or five, but for the cheap, steep-premium oils you will not.

Here is the same idea applied to a real small job. A customer asks for six 200 g candles in Orchard Pear. At 16 g each, plus about 5% for pour loss, that is about 101 g of oil. Three ways to buy it:

This is the most common way small businesses overpay: not by testing, but by fulfilling small real orders with tester bottles.

What the premium costs per candle

The premium matters most when it is multiplied by candles. The table puts the oil cost of one 200 g candle at 8% (16 g) side by side at the 15 g and 100 g rates, then multiplies the gap by twenty candles, a small month for many makers.
