Best Fragrance Oils for Wedding Return-Gift Candles

Return gifts are costed at the volume rate, because at 200 pieces and above you are buying oil by the half-kilo or kilo. The table uses each oil's 1 kg price, an 8% load, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo and one Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90. It shows 50 g and 100 g, the two usual return-gift sizes, with 200 g for comparison.

The spread at 50 g is narrower than the per-gram prices suggest. Citrus Lemon, the cheapest oil in the collection, gives a 50 g fill cost of ₹40.57. Lavender, one of the dearer oils on the list, gives ₹50.12. That is a gap of ₹9.56 a piece, or ₹4,778.00 across 500 pieces. It is real money, but it is not the difference between a viable and an unviable return gift. For a 50 g candle you can afford to choose a scent the family likes rather than the cheapest one on the list.

In small candles, wax is the bigger line

Makers spend hours choosing a scent and seconds choosing a wax. For a 200 g candle with a premium oil, that is reasonable. For a 50 g return gift with a value oil it is backwards. At 8% the candle is 92% wax, and a cheap oil costs less per gram than you might expect relative to wax. Here is British Rose at the 1 kg rate in both of CSI's container soy waxes:

With CSI 464, wax is 56.2% of the oil-wax-wick cost of a 50 g British Rose candle, and oil is 29.6%. Switching from Chunks to CSI 464 saves ₹4.21 a piece at 50 g and ₹2,106.80 across 500 pieces, more than the difference between several of the oils in the previous table. The two waxes are not interchangeable in every respect. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance and CSI 464 up to 10%, both the wax maker's stated maximums. At an 8% load either works. Test your oil in the wax you will actually produce with.

200 and 500 pieces

Here are the three shortlisted value oils at the two run sizes most return-gift orders fall into, in both 50 g and 100 g. Oil is 8% of candle weight, plus a 5% allowance for pour loss and test burns (a working assumption). Packs are the cheapest in-stock mix for that quantity, preferring fewer bottles where the difference is a few rupees.

Moving from 200 to 500 pieces trims British Rose oil per 50 g piece from ₹14.16 to ₹12.96, because the larger run buys its oil at the 1 kg rate. That works here because all three shortlisted oils are among the 24 in the catalogue with a kilo saving of 5% or more. For a flat-priced oil the effect almost vanishes. Gardenia at 50 g costs ₹18.44 of oil a piece at 200 pieces and ₹18.19 at 500. The honest summary is that on CSI's listed catalogue, scale lowers your per-piece cost through the oils that have a real kilo saving, through less pack rounding, and through fewer reorders. The ranked shortlist

Ranking return-gift oils comes down to four things: cost per piece, whether most guests will like it, whether it is in stock at 1 kg for the reorder, and whether it has a 15 g tester so you can check it first. Whether a scent suits a given family is a judgement, and the order below is reasoning from those four tests, not sales data.

Citrus Lemon is last despite being cheapest because it reads as a kitchen or summer scent more than a wedding one, and the per-piece saving over British Rose is small. Eucalyptus Spearmint and Lavender are good oils that sit outside the return-gift brief for most weddings. Lavender's fill cost is also the highest of the eleven costed above. Use them if the family asks.

Testing a small candle properly

A 50 g candle is tested differently from a 200 g jar. Guests often smell it closed, in a box, before they light it, and when they do light it the melt pool is small. A test that suits a large jar will mislead you here.

A 500-piece shopping list

Here is a complete list for 500 return gifts at 50 g in British Rose, with CSI 464 wax, a 5% allowance on oil and wax, and one Eco Thin C1 wick per candle. Containers are not included because return-gift containers vary so much.

The same list for 200 pieces is 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g of British Rose (₹2,832.00), 2 × 5 kg of CSI 464 (₹5,074.00) and 2 × pack of 100 of wicks (₹1,180.00): ₹9,086.00, or ₹45.43 a piece. The per-piece figure is higher at 200 than at 500 for two reasons: the smaller run buys its oil below the kilo rate, and its wax rounds up from 9.66 kg to a full 10 kg. Those two pack effects are the economy of scale on this catalogue. Add your container, packaging, labour, freight and GST to reach a selling price.
