Why the trial runs on 50 g

Sampling and trialling answer different questions. A 15 g sample, split into small pots, tells you which oils are worth pursuing and roughly what load they want. It cannot tell you whether an oil works in the jar you will sell, with the wick you will use, over repeated burns. That is what a trial batch is for, and it needs full-size candles. Three is the minimum that lets you test two wicks and keep one candle back, which is why this protocol works in threes.

For most oils there is no per-gram penalty in trialling at 50 g: across the catalogue, 52 of 86 oils price their 50 g within 1% of their 100 g per gram. The 100 g is worth considering only if you want to trial in two waxes at once, for example Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (rated up to 13%) against CSI 464 (rated up to 10%). Both ratings are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits, and 8% sits inside both. If an oil has no 50 g in stock, the small-samples guide covers what to do.

The six-week schedule

The schedule below is built around one idea: the only variable in each comparison should be the one you are testing. Pour all nine candles in one session, from one melt of wax, at one temperature. Cure them together in one place. Burn them in the same room at the same time of day. Write everything down on the day, not from memory at the end.

The four-hour burn length and the fourteen-day cure are working test settings, not rules. Some soy blends develop faster, some slower; the wax's product page is the authority for its own cure. What matters most is that every candle in the trial follows the same timetable, so that differences come from the oil and wick, not the calendar.

Burning: the four-session log

Burn A and B side by side, at least a metre apart, in a room you use every day. Check them at the end of each hour. The log below is the minimum; copy it into a notebook or spreadsheet with one row per candle per hour. Two columns do most of the work. Melt pool tells you about the wick: a pool that has not reached the glass by the end of the first long burn usually means the wick is too small for the jar, and tunnelling follows. A flame that climbs, smokes or mushrooms usually means too large. That is why A and B carry different wicks. Scent from the doorway is the hot-throw number that matters to a customer, because nobody sits a metre from a candle all evening. Record it after the pool is full, not at the first flicker.

Pass gates and the verdict

A trial ends in a yes or a no per oil, not a feeling. Set the gates before you light anything, so that a scent you love cannot talk its way past a tunnel. The gates below are our working thresholds for a 200 g container candle; tighten them for a premium range.

When an oil passes, write its production spec on the same page: oil, load, wax, jar, wick, pour temperature, cure days. That spec is what you reorder against.
