What 15 g of oil actually makes

Every candle calculation in this series uses the same rule. For a finished candle of weight W at fragrance load L, the oil is W × L and the wax is the rest. Turn that round and a fixed amount of oil tells you how much candle it can scent: candle weight = oil ÷ load. For a 15 g sample that gives three very different answers depending on the load you test at.

The last column is the one that catches makers out. A 15 g sample cannot make a 200 g candle at 8%; it runs out 1 g short. At 7.5% it makes exactly one (200 × 7.5% = 15 g). So if the sample's job is to prove the oil in your standard 200 g jar, you get one candle, at a slightly lower load than you will produce at, and nothing to compare it against. That is a poor test. Smaller pots give you comparisons, and comparison is what a sample is for.

The 50 g pot is the useful unit. At 8% it takes 4 g of oil and 46 g of wax, so a 15 g sample makes three with 3 g left over. At 6% and 10% the bottle divides exactly: five pots or three. A 50 g pot is also small enough that a whole test batch of five oils needs under a kilo of wax. The catch is that a small pot has a small melt pool, so hot-throw results read lower than they will in a full jar. Treat them as a ranking between oils, not as a prediction of the finished candle. The one-bottle load ladder

Pour the whole sample into four 50 g pots: two at 6% (3 g oil each), one at 8% (4 g) and one at 10% (5 g). That is 3 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15 g of oil exactly, with 47 + 47 + 46 + 45 = 185 g of wax. The two 6% pots are not a duplicate by mistake. Burn one at two days and the other at fourteen, and you learn how much the scent develops with cure. The 8% and 10% pots, burned at fourteen days, tell you whether the oil rewards a higher load or simply costs more.

The wax for the whole ladder costs ₹110.81 in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, so the oil is by far the larger cost of the test. With Lavender at ₹105.02 the ladder costs about ₹215.83 in oil and wax before wicks. Five oils need 925 g of wax, which one 1 kg bag covers with 75 g to spare for a re-pour. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%, so the whole ladder sits inside either wax's stated maximum. Those are the wax maker's formulation limits, not regulatory ones.

What a sample tests — and what it cannot

A 15 g sample is a filter, not a qualification. It is excellent at removing the oils you should never buy in quantity and poor at proving the ones you should. Knowing which side of that line each result falls on stops you from over-reading a good pot.

Two rows deserve a second look. Discolouration: vanilla-heavy oils such as Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean are the usual suspects in any wax, and some colour change only shows after weeks, so keep pot C sealed on a shelf as a reference after the burn tests. Hot throw in the production jar: a 50 g pot burning a narrow pool will always read quieter than a wide jar. If an oil ranks top of your pots, it will probably rank top in the jar too. Its absolute strength in the jar is something only a full-size pour can tell you.

The sample premium, oil by oil

The 15 g size costs more per gram than the same oil at 100 g for almost every oil. The premium varies a great deal, from nothing to more than double, and it is worth knowing before you choose which size to sample in. Where the premium is large, the 50 g can be the better sample even though it costs more at the till.

Most of the oils a first-time sampler reaches for sit between about 20% and 85% above their 100 g rate. The extremes are instructive. Mahogany Shea costs ₹10.93 a gram at 15 g and ₹4.89 at 100 g, a premium of 123.8%. Vetiver costs ₹12.51 at 15 g against ₹7.08 at 50 g, so its 50 g (₹354.00) gives you more than three times the oil for less than double the money. At the other end, Sandalwood (23.6%) and Raat Ki Rani (23.8%) carry some of the smallest premiums in the table, and the 15 g is plainly the right sample. Even Jasmine, at 59.7%, is cheaper to sample in 15 g than to buy a 50 g you may not use.

The last column is the one to watch as a business. Lavender sampled in 15 g and poured as a 200 g candle at 8% would put ₹112.02 of oil into the candle. The same candle from the 100 g costs ₹86.40. The ₹25.62 difference is harmless on four test pots and ruinous on a hundred candles. Building your own sample set

Because CSI does not sell a sample pack, the set is yours to design. That is an advantage: a fixed pack would decide your families for you. Choose around your intended range, not around what is cheapest. Three oils below show three reasons to sample: a benchmark, a value floral with a real price break, and an Indian floral that few generic packs would include.

Round the set out with one woody and one fresh oil so that you are testing across families, not five variations on a floral.
