Commercial Fragrance · Sample Before 1 Kg
CSI does not sell a sample set or trial pack, so the set you test before a kilo is one you build from the 15 g sizes. This page does the sums that decide whether to test at all (almost always yes) and, once an oil passes, whether to jump straight to 1 kg or run a 100 g first. We are glad to help you build the set on WhatsApp.
3.9%
— if there is more than this chance you would regret a 1 kg of Lavender (₹5,221.00), a ₹205.38 test pays for itself
Quick answers — read this first
Does CSI sell a sample set to try before 1 kg? No. There is no sample set, sample pack or trial pack. Build one from the 15 g sizes (51 oils, from ₹68.44). Ask us on WhatsApp to help choose.

Is it worth testing before buying 1 kg? Almost always. Testing one oil in three 50 g pots costs about ₹200 to ₹300 with wax and wicks. A wrong kilo costs ₹2,832.00 to ₹24,056.00. For Lavender, testing pays if there is more than a 3.9% chance you would regret the kilo.

When is 1 kg actually cheaper than 100 g? Divide the 1 kg price by the 100 g price. That is the number of 100 g bottles at which the kilo becomes cheaper. Citronella: 3.77. Mango Coconut: 7.93. Lavender: 9.67. See the break-even table.

Should I skip 100 g and go straight to 1 kg? Only if the oil passed your test and you will use more than its break-even in the next production cycle. Otherwise run a 100 g first; for most oils it costs the same per gram.
The short answer
What exists: No sample set or trial pack is sold. Build from 15 g sizes (51 oils in stock). 1 kg in stock for 73 oils, ₹2,832.00–₹24,056.00.
Test or not: Test cost ≈ 15 g oil + 138 g wax + 3 wicks. Divide by the kilo price: that is the regret risk at which testing pays. For the oils here it runs from 2.5% to 8.4%.
Kilo or 100 g: Kilo break-even = 1 kg price ÷ 100 g price. Below 10 means the kilo saves money if you use that many 100 g bottles' worth; 52 of 91 oils are within 1% per gram, so the kilo mostly buys security.

From 15 g to 1 kg — the two questions that decide the jump 15 g test≈ ₹200 per oil Passed thepots? No → drop it(cost: the test only) Yes Will you use morethan the kilo'sbreak-even? Yes → 1 kgcheaper + secure No → 100 gfirst run Break-even = 1 kg price ÷ 100 g price, in 100 g bottles Citronella: 3.77 bottles · Mango Coconut: 7.93 · Lavender: 9.67 — the lower the number, the sooner the kilo pays
Two gates between a sample and a kilo. The first is quality: did the oil pass your pots? The second is quantity and price: will you use more than the kilo's break-even, measured in 100 g bottles, before the next reorder? If not, a 100 g first run costs the same per gram for most oils and risks far less.
Straight answer
Should I buy a fragrance oil sample set before buying 1 kg, and how do I decide when to make the jump?
Yes, and at CSI you build that set yourself: there is no sample set, sample pack or trial pack for sale, but 51 oils come in 15 g. The case for testing is arithmetic. Testing one oil in three 50 g pots at 8% costs its 15 g price plus 138 g of wax and three wicks, roughly ₹200 to ₹300. A 1 kg costs ₹2,832.00 to ₹24,056.00. Divide one by the other and you get the regret risk at which testing pays: for Lavender it is 3.9%, for Santal Noir 2.9%. If there is more than that chance you would not want the kilo, test. Once an oil passes, ask a second question: is the kilo actually cheaper? Divide the 1 kg price by the 100 g price. For Citronella the answer is 3.77, so if you will use four 100 g bottles' worth, the kilo is cheaper. For Lavender it is 9.67, so the kilo saves almost nothing and buys stock security, not price. Our worked festive example tests four spice oils for ₹1,138.62 and then buys one kilo. Ask us on WhatsApp before your first kilo.
One line: test because the kilo is 12 to 40 times the test; buy the kilo only when you will use more than its break-even.
There is no sample set to buy first, so build one from 15 g sizes. Testing an oil properly costs its 15 g price plus about ₹100.36 of wax and wicks. For Lavender that is ₹205.38, against ₹5,221.00 for the kilo.

The cost of a wrong kilo

Nobody buys a kilo expecting to regret it. Most people who regret one simply skipped a ₹200 test.

A wrong kilo is not always a total loss. You might sell some candles, blend it, or use it in a cheaper line. But it is the most expensive way to learn that an oil is weak in your wax, that it discolours, or that your customers do not like it. The useful comparison is between the cost of testing and the cost of the kilo, because their ratio tells you how sure you need to be before skipping the test.

Test = 15 g oil + three 50 g pots at 8% (138 g wax at ₹599.00 / kg, three Eco Thin C1 wicks) · CSI live pricing 24 September 2026

Honeydew Melon ₹105.02 ₹205.38 ₹3,398.40 16.5× 6.0%

Read the last column as a question to yourself. For Santal Noir, testing pays if there is more than a 2.9% chance you would regret its ₹9,120.00 kilo. For Citronella, whose kilo is cheap, the threshold is higher, 8.4%, but still low. For every oil in the table, if you have not yet burned it in your own wax, your chance of regret is almost certainly higher than the threshold. Unless you have used the oil before, test it.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A buyer who goes straight to the kilo spends more with us today. A buyer who spends ₹205.38 testing Lavender first, and then buys the kilo because it passed, spends more with us over a year, because they reorder what works. We would rather sell the second kind of kilo. If an oil fails your test, we have lost one sale and kept a customer.
The one case where skipping the test is reasonable
You have already used this exact oil, in this wax, in this jar, and it sold. Then the test has been done, by your customers. Even then, check the product page title matches your last order exactly, since some scents have two listings at different prices.

The decision rule, step by step

Put the two questions together and the path from a sample to a kilo becomes a short set of checks. None of them needs more than a calculator and the product page.

1
Test in 15 g, in your wax, at your loadThree 50 g pots at 8%, cured fourteen days, burned in the same room. What a 15 g sample makes covers the pots; the trial-pack protocol covers a full-size jar test for oils that pass.
2
Pass or drop, against gates you set firstCold throw, hot throw, clean burn, no unacceptable colour change. Drop anything that fails. Its cost was the test, nothing more.
3
Estimate your use before the next reorderCandles you will make of this scent in the next production cycle × 16 g (a 200 g candle at 8%), plus 3–5% as a working allowance for pour loss and test burns. The 100-candle calculation shows the arithmetic at a round number.
4
Compare with the kilo break-evenBreak-even = 1 kg price ÷ 100 g price, in 100 g bottles. If your use exceeds that many hundred grams, the kilo is cheaper; if not, 100 g bottles are no dearer and carry less risk.
5
Check stock on the size you chooseA few oils are missing a size on any given day. If the kilo is out of stock, ask for a restock date on WhatsApp before you plan around it.
6
Buy — and write down whyNote the oil, size, price and the break-even you worked out. Next time, the reorder decision takes ten seconds.
The CSI principle
Test for quality. Divide for quantity.
The sample answers whether the oil deserves a kilo. The price ladder answers whether a kilo is the right way to buy it. Mixing the two questions is how makers end up with a kilo of a good oil they could have bought for the same money in 100 g, or a kilo of the wrong oil at a price that looked like a bargain.

When the kilo is really cheaper

The kilo is only cheaper than 100 g bottles for a minority of oils. For the rest, it is the same price with less flexibility.

On CSI's listed prices, 52 of the 91 oils that list both a 100 g and a 1 kg price the kilo within 1% of the 100 g per gram. Twenty-four show a saving of 5% or more. The break-even count turns that into a buying rule you can apply to any oil: divide the 1 kg price by the 100 g price. If the answer is close to 10, the kilo saves almost nothing; the lower it is, the sooner the kilo pays.

Neroli ₹665.52 ₹6,655.20 0.0% 10.00 62

Citronella stands apart: its kilo costs the same as 3.77 bottles of 100 g, so any maker who will pour about 24 candles of it should buy the kilo. Honeydew Melon and Mango Coconut pay at about eight bottles. At the other end, Lavender and Neroli sit near ten, so their kilos are for stock security and fewer reorders. That is a real benefit once a scent sells steadily; it is not a discount. Price per kg in India has the full per-kilo view, and testing in 100 g and reordering in kilos covers choosing a supplier around this path.

Worked example: four spices, one kilo

A maker wants one spiced scent for a Diwali run and has four candidates. Buying a kilo of the favourite blind would cost ₹5,310.00 to ₹6,499.00, an average of ₹5,465.65. Here is the tested route instead.

Stage 1 · oils and wax CSI live pricing 24 September 2026 · wicks verified 10 September 2026
Stage 1 — test all four in 15 g
Item Size Qty Price Line total
Pumpkin Spice 15 g 1 ₹106.20 ₹106.20
Cinnamon 15 g 1 ₹106.20 ₹106.20
Apple Cinnamon 15 g 1 ₹93.22 ₹93.22
Spicy Cinnamon 15 g 1 ₹116.00 ₹116.00
Samples subtotal 60 g 4 — ₹421.62
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (552 g needed) 1 kg 1 ₹599.00 ₹599.00
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (12 needed) 10 2 ₹59.00 ₹118.00
Stage 1 total ₹1,138.62

Twelve pots, three per oil at 8%, use 552 g of the kilo of wax; the rest is available for a trial batch of the winner. Suppose Pumpkin Spice wins. The maker expects to pour about 60 candles before Diwali: 60 × 16 g = 960 g, plus a working 3–5% allowance, so just over a kilo of oil. Its break-even is 9.00 bottles of 100 g, below the ten bottles needed, so the kilo is the right buy.

Stage 2 · CSI live pricing 24 September 2026
Stage 2 — the winner, by the kilo
Route What you buy Cost Note
Kilo Pumpkin Spice 1 kg ₹5,310.00 10.0% cheaper per gram than 100 g
Ten bottles Pumpkin Spice 10 × 100 g ₹5,900.00 ₹590.00 more for the same 1 kg
Tested route total Stage 1 + kilo ₹6,448.62 Stage 1 is 21.4% of the kilo's price

The four-way test cost ₹1,138.62, or 21.4% of the kilo it led to, and some of that is wax you will use anyway. In return the maker knows the chosen spice beat three alternatives in their own wax, and the kilo saved ₹590.00 over buying the same oil in 100 g bottles. If the maker had expected to pour only 25 candles, the answer would have been two or three 100 g bottles instead, because 400 g is well under Pumpkin Spice's break-even. For bigger festive plans, how much oil to order for Diwali sets out the quantities.

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. A four-way spice test poured this week is cured and burned by mid-October, leaving time to order the winning kilo. Send us your candidates and expected candle count on WhatsApp and we will check stock on the kilo and quote anything larger.

Where the jump goes wrong

Most expensive mistakes between a sample and a kilo come from one of four habits. Each is easy to avoid once you have named it.

Four common errors and their fixes
The jump, done badly
Mistake What it costs Fix
Buying the kilo because it "must be cheaper" For flat-priced oils, nothing extra per gram, but a kilo of risk Divide 1 kg by 100 g first; the further below 10, the more the kilo saves
Testing at one load and producing at another A passed oil that throws weaker or sweats in production Test at your production load; a load ladder finds it
Testing in small pots and never in the jar A kilo that tunnels in your 200 g jar Run a trial batch before the kilo for anything new to your jar
Producing from 15 g bottles to avoid a bigger buy At 16 g a candle, the 15 g premium on every candle Move a passed oil to 100 g at least; Where to Buy Fragrance Oils in Small Quantities for a Candle Business explains why
The mistake that feels careful. Buying ten 100 g bottles of a proven seller "to keep flexibility" when its kilo break-even is below eight. For Mango Coconut that costs ₹1,036.00 more for the same kilo of oil. Flexibility is worth paying for when an oil is unproven. Once it is proven and the break-even is low, it is just a higher price.
The sample decides whether you want the oil. The division decides how you buy it.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and does not sell a sample set or trial pack. This page tells you to test before every first kilo and names the oils whose kilo saves nothing per gram. Both points cost us sales in the short run; both make the kilos you do buy ones you keep buying.

Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Test costs, regret-risk thresholds, break-even counts and totals are plain arithmetic on those prices. The price-break statistics (52 of 91 within 1%; 24 with 5% or more) are from the same pull.

The test design (three 50 g pots at 8%), the 60-candle festive scenario and the 3–5% allowance are working assumptions for illustration. "Regret risk" is a way of framing the decision, not a prediction of how often any oil fails. For advice before a first kilo, bulk quotes, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a sample before buying 1 kg of fragrance oil?
Yes, unless you have already used that exact oil in your wax and jar. A test costs roughly ₹200 to ₹300; a kilo costs ₹2,832.00 to ₹24,056.00. CSI does not sell a sample set, so buy the 15 g of each oil you are considering.
Is 1 kg fragrance oil cheaper than buying 100 g bottles?
For most oils, barely. Divide the 1 kg price by the 100 g price: near 10 means little saving. Citronella (3.77), Honeydew Melon (7.80) and Mango Coconut (7.93) are clear exceptions where the kilo saves real money.
How many candles does 1 kg of fragrance oil make?
At 8% in a 200 g candle (16 g each), 62.5 candles. At 6% (12 g), 83; at 10% (20 g), 50. Allow 3–5% for pour loss and test burns as a working assumption.
How long does sampling take before I can order a kilo?
About fourteen days of cure plus a few evenings of burns, so two to three weeks. Order samples at least five weeks before you need production stock.
What if the 1 kg is out of stock after my samples pass?
Ask on WhatsApp for a restock date. For most oils, 100 g bottles cost the same per gram, so buying several 100 g is a reasonable bridge. Check stock on the kilo before you start testing if your date is fixed.
Can I get more than 1 kg at a better price?
The listed packs go up to 1 kg per oil. For larger quantities, ask for a quote on WhatsApp. No discount figure is published, so ask rather than assume. How to Sample Candle Fragrance Oils Before Placing a Wholesale Order covers how to sample before a wholesale order.
Test, then divide, then buy
A couple of hundred rupees of testing before every first kilo, and a calculator before every reorder.
51 oils in 15 g from ₹68.44 and 73 oils in 1 kg from ₹2,832.00, with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks from ₹299.00 and Eco wicks from ₹59.00. Tell us which samples passed and how many candles you plan, and we will help you choose between 100 g and the kilo.
