How Do I Test a New Reed Diffuser Base Supplier Before Replacing the Base Used in My Existing Bestselling Products?
Share
What is the pass? Clear at 7 days, grams per day and blind scores within your tolerance over 30 days, reeds no worse, and a triangle test showing people cannot reliably tell the two apart.
How long does it take? About two months on the example schedule: 7-day hold, 30-day side by side, then a pilot lot. Not possible before Diwali — plan it for after.
What does it cost? ₹5,319.00 in CSI materials for two SKUs with your own oil (₹7,615.80 with oil bought). See the kit.
The rule for a bestseller: indistinguishable, then better
When a reed diffuser sells well, its customers have learned what it smells like, how long it lasts on their shelf and what the bottle looks like at week three. A new base can change any of those, and most of the changes show up after the sale, not on the bench. So the question you are really asking is not "is the new base good?" — it is "can I swap it in without anyone noticing anything except, perhaps, an improvement?" That changes how you test.
The method on this page has six gates, run in order, with the old base kept in stock until the last but one has passed. Gate 0 is paperwork before you buy anything. Gate 1 is a clarity hold with your exact oil and load. Gate 2 runs both bases side by side for thirty days, weighing grams per day and scoring blind. Gate 3 asks a stricter question than most makers ask: can anyone tell the two apart at all? Gate 4 is a small pilot lot sold or used under watch. Only then does the specification change. It sounds slow; it is about two months, and the old base keeps you selling the whole time.
The examples use two bestsellers — Bergamot Amber and British Rose — at an example production formula of 25% load, 110 ml in a 120 ml Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle, 7 black fibre reeds. The candidates are the CSI bases whose pages assign those families: Longevity for amber, Lift for rose (Softness also names rose, so it is a valid second candidate). Those page assignments are claims to test. CSI publishes no composition, evaporation or throw data for any base, and nothing on this page assumes the candidate will win.
Gate 0: what to establish before you buy a test bottle
The first gate costs nothing. It is a list of facts about the new supplier and base that you write down before anything is mixed, because some of them can end the project on their own. For a CSI base, the answers below are what the product pages and our records actually say; for any other supplier, ask the same questions.
| Question | For a CSI base | Why it matters for a bestseller |
|---|---|---|
| What is it made of? | Not published for any CSI base — never assume DPG, Augeo-type or alcohol | You cannot predict compatibility; you must test it |
| Is there an SDS or technical data sheet? | Ask CSI on WhatsApp whether one is available for that base | Your own labelling and retailer paperwork may need it |
| What load range does the page state? | 10–30% on every base page; Pure Performance recommends 20%, typical 25% | Your 25% must sit inside it |
| Which families is it assigned to? | Per page: Longevity amber/woody/spicy/gourmand; Lift floral/citrus/green/fruity | Starts your candidate list; proves nothing |
| What sizes are listed? | 500 ml (Pure Performance also 100 g); larger quantities quoted on WhatsApp | Sets your test cost and reorder unit |
| Is it in stock now? | Five bases in stock on 14 October 2026; HyperDiffusion out of stock | A bestseller cannot depend on an out-of-stock base |
| Lead time, lot numbers, change notices? | Not published — record your own order dates and keep retained samples | You become the record-keeper for consistency |
| Does the oil's IFRA limit allow your load? | CSI publishes no IFRA % per oil — ask for the oil's certificate and read Category 10A | Unchanged by the base if the load is unchanged — confirm it anyway |
Two answers deserve a moment. First, a base with unpublished composition is normal in this market — but it means compatibility is something you prove with your oil, not something you can read off a sheet. Second, consistency over time is your responsibility as much as the supplier's: write the order date on every bottle, keep a small sealed retained sample of each lot, and you will be able to compare any future batch against the one you approved. Choosing a base supplier for documentation and repeat availability covers the supplier-selection side in depth, and what to ask CSI before buying turns Gate 0 into a message you can send.
What a base change can disturb — the retest matrix
A base is not a neutral filler. It is most of the bottle, and it is the vehicle that carries the fragrance up the reeds and into the room. Changing it can, in general practice, change clarity, how fast the liquid travels and evaporates, how the fragrance balance comes across, how the reeds age, and even how the liquid interacts with the cap liner. The matrix below sorts every earlier approval into four groups, so you retest only what the change can actually touch.
| Earlier approval | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Oil choice and supplier | KEEP | Same oil, same lot for the test |
| Load and the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit | CONFIRM | Load unchanged, so the limit check stands — re-read it against the oil's certificate |
| Clarity and single-phase at your load | REPEAT | Compatibility is base-specific |
| Rest period before bottling | CONFIRM | CSI pages say 24–48 h; record what you observe |
| Grams per day and days of life | REPEAT | Evaporation and wicking can change with the carrier |
| Room score across the bottle's life | REPEAT | The fragrance balance can shift |
| Reed condition at 30 days | REPEAT | Residue and darkening can differ |
| Reed count | KEEP until gate 2 says otherwise | Change one variable only |
| Bottle, cap and leakage | CONFIRM | New liquid against your cap liner — inverted and warm-room checks |
| Label wording ("lasts X weeks" etc.) | REPEAT if you make any time claim | It rests on your g/day data |
| Supplier paperwork on file | NEW | Ask whether an SDS is available; file the answer |
Gates 1 to 3: the side-by-side, and the triangle test
Make the control from your current base — ideally from a retained sample of the lot that made your best recent batch — and the test arm from the candidate. Everything else comes from production: the same oil lot, load, fill, bottle, cap and reed pack. Three bottles per arm for scoring plus one reference bottle per arm that is never reeded, so you can compare the liquid itself at day 30. Mix by weight: at 25% and 110 ml that is 27.5 g of oil and 82.5 g of base per bottle at an example density of 1.00 g per ml.
| Arm | Bottles | Base | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| A — control | A1–A3 | Your current base (retained lot) | Scored, weighed, reeds photographed |
| A-ref | A4 | Your current base | Sealed, no reeds — the liquid at day 0 for comparison |
| B — candidate | B1–B3 | The page-assigned CSI base | Scored, weighed, reeds photographed |
| B-ref | B4 | The candidate base | Sealed, no reeds — clarity and colour reference |
The triangle test is the step most makers skip, and it is the most useful one for a bestseller. A scoring panel can tell you the new base is "about as strong"; a triangle test tells you whether people can detect a difference at all. Chance alone picks the odd bottle one time in three, so you need noticeably more than a third correct before you conclude the bases are distinguishable. With 12 evaluator-trials, 8 or more correct would be unlikely by chance (about 1.9% probability); with 18 trials, 10 or more; with 9, 6 or more. Below those counts, you have no evidence that anyone can tell — which, for a bestseller, is the result you want.
| Evaluator-trials | Correct answers needed to call a difference | Probability of reaching it by guessing | What it means for the swap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 6 or more | 4.2% | Below this: no evidence of a detectable difference |
| 12 | 8 or more | 1.9% | Below this: no evidence of a detectable difference |
| 18 | 10 or more | 4.3% | Below this: no evidence of a detectable difference |
The price question, done properly
Supplier changes are often driven by price, and price comparisons between bases are often wrong, because one supplier quotes per kilogram and another per litre or per 500 ml. CSI lists its bases per 500 ml. Your formula is by weight. So the comparison needs a density, and none is published for any CSI base — weigh 100 ml of the candidate in a beaker on a scale. The table uses an example current-supplier price of ₹2,000.00 per kg, which you replace with your own invoice.
| Base | Listed price | Per bottle at 0.95 g/ml | Per bottle at 1.00 g/ml | Per bottle at 1.05 g/ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your current base (example) | ₹2,000.00 per kg | ₹165.00 | ₹165.00 | ₹165.00 |
| Longevity Base | ₹1,296.00 / 500 ml | ₹225.09 | ₹213.84 | ₹203.66 |
| Lift Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | ₹190.88 | ₹181.34 | ₹172.70 |
Notice the direction: a denser base costs less per gram when it is bought by the millilitre, because each millilitre delivers more grams. At the example density the Longevity bottle's base costs ₹213.84 and Lift's ₹181.34, against ₹165.00 for the example current base. Whatever your numbers show, a cheaper base is only cheaper if gate 2 shows the same grams per day — a base that empties the bottle faster costs more per day of use even at a lower price. Comparing base prices per kg with density and bottle yield covers the full yield calculation.
The priced qualification kit
For two bestsellers, both arms, with a 5% liquid allowance and listed in-stock packs. The control arm uses your current base, which you already hold. Use your own production oil lot for both arms — a fresh oil lot would add a second change; the oil line is shown only for readers starting from scratch.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Longevity Base | 346.5 ml | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,296.00 | — |
| Lift Base | 346.5 ml | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,099.00 | — |
| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 120 ml | 16 bottles | 2 × pack of 10 | ₹2,124.00 | You test in your production bottle (better) |
| Fiber Diffuser Reeds (Black) | 84 + 4 spare | 1 × pack of 100 | ₹800.00 | You hold your production reed lot (better) |
| CSI materials, own oil | ₹5,319.00 | |||
| Bergamot Amber (only if starting fresh) | 231.0 g | 2 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹1,400.00 | You hold your production oil (better) |
| British Rose (only if starting fresh) | 231.0 g | 2 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹896.80 | You hold your production oil (better) |
| Everything bought | ₹7,615.80 |
If the candidate passes gates 1–3, gate 4 is a pilot lot of 20 bottles per SKU: 1,650 ml of base, which rounds to 4 × 500 ml with a 3% filling allowance. Sell or place the pilot lot as normal, keep a sealed retained bottle, and log anything customers say. Keep at least one unopened bottle of the old base until the pilot has run its course. The reed diffuser QC checklist gives the release record to use at gate 5.
The decision rule, gate by gate
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Gate 0 shows the base is out of stock, or a document you require is unavailable | Not a supply you can depend on yet | Don't buy yet. Ask CSI on WhatsApp; revisit later |
| Candidate hazes or layers at your load by day 7 | Not compatible at this load | Stop for this SKU. Try the second page-assigned base (Softness for rose) |
| Candidate's g/day differs from control beyond your tolerance | Product life changes | Stop, or treat it as a new product with new label claims |
| Triangle test: people reliably pick the odd bottle | The swap is detectable | Only proceed if the panel prefers the new base and you accept a relaunch |
| Not detectable; scores and g/day within tolerance; reeds no worse | Indistinguishable | Gate 4: pilot lot of 20, old base kept in reserve |
| Pilot passes QC with no complaints | Ready | Switch the specification; reorder the candidate in 500 ml bottles |
Two exits on that table lead to a relaunch rather than a swap, and that is fine — sometimes a new base genuinely makes a better product, and customers will tell you. But a relaunch is announced, priced and labelled as one. If you sell to retailers, a changed product may also need their approval. Whether a better base improves customer value and repeat purchases is the page for making that commercial case.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. A base supplier hoping to win your business has every reason to say "just switch". This page tells you to keep your current base in stock, run six gates and a triangle test first, and to stay where you are if your current base passes and your customers are happy. We publish no composition, evaporation or throw data for any of our bases, so we cannot promise the swap will be invisible — only your bottles can show it.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the TOTAL blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). No density is published for any CSI base or oil, so every ml ↔ g conversion uses a labelled example density with its ±5% sensitivity; weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours. Labelled examples: 25% production load, 110 ml fill in the 120 ml Gold bottle, density 1.00 g/ml (0.95 and 1.05 shown), 7 black fibre reeds per scored bottle, three scored bottles plus one sealed reference per arm, 5% liquid allowance, ₹2,000.00 per kg current-supplier base price, 20-bottle pilot lot with a 3% filling allowance, and the gate schedule. Triangle-test thresholds: one-sided binomial at p = 1/3, 5% level. What CSI's product pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all fragrance families, start at 10%, up to a maximum of 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours before bottling, flip reeds after the first hour; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous, spicy and gourmand families, avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, slower "cold diffusion", reduce the percentage if clouding occurs; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand; all four 10–30% with a 24–48 hour rest. Reed pages: 20.3 cm long; "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance" (the page's guidance, not a test result). CSI does not publish the composition, viscosity, density, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life of any diffuser base; no throw, longevity or evaporation data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; no IFRA percentage for any oil; no lead times and no bulk base price. No CSI base is ranked above another on this page: the pages differ in what they say each base is FOR, and those statements are claims to test. CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan, and does not sell DPG, Augeo, perfumer's alcohol or IPM. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
