Soft, relaxing scents can smell rich in the jar and faint when lit in soy. Here are five oils with stated soy loads, the ceilings you are working to, and a three-week test that fixes wick and cure before it touches the load.
10%
the governing maximum for every relaxing oil here, in every CSI soy wax with a stated ceiling · verified September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Why do relaxing scents seem weak in soy? Soft scents — lavender, sandalwood, creamy white florals — are built to be gentle, and soy wax is commonly described by makers as giving a softer hot throw than paraffin. Put the two together and a candle can smell lovely cold and faint lit. The fix is rarely "more oil"; it is the right load inside the ceiling, a full melt pool, and a longer cure.

What is the maximum load? The lower of two numbers: the oil page's stated maximum and the wax page's stated ceiling. For the five oils here that is 10% in every CSI soy wax whose ceiling is stated. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is itself capped at 10%.

Which oils? Lavender, Sandalwood, Bergamot Amber, Gardenia and Raat Ki Rani. Every page states a soy or candle load; all five at 50 g cost ₹1,414.42.

How do I test them? Three loads on a C1 wick, then the best load on a C2, cured and burned at day 3, day 7 and day 14. A 20-candle soy test basket is ₹5,037.02.
The short answer
Load: test 6%, 8% and 10% of total weight. Nothing above 10% for these oils in any soy wax, whatever the wax allows.
Wick: soft scents need a full melt pool. Start on C1; if the pool has not reached the glass in two to three hours, retest on C2.
Cure: of these five, only Bergamot Amber's page states one (48–72 hours). Judge soy candles at day 7 and day 14, not day 2.
Wax: CSI 464 (10% ceiling, melt/pour 80–90°C on the page) or Coconut Soy CSI 468 (13%, pour 58–60°C). Test in the one you will sell in.
Two ceilings: the oil page and the wax page Stated maximum fragrance load, % of total candle weight. The lower of the two governs; neither is a target. 0% 2% 4% 6% 8% 10% 12% 14% test band 6 · 8 · 10% OIL PAGE · SOY / CANDLE MAXIMUM Lavender 6–10% candles Sandalwood up to 10% soy Bergamot Amber 6–10% soy Gardenia up to 10% soy Raat Ki Rani 6–10% candles Japanese Cherry Blossom 6–13% candles WAX PAGE · STATED CEILING Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10% Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 up to 13% Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% Eco Soy CSI 400 ceiling not stated on page Natural Soy Pearl Wax ceiling not stated on page All five picks stop at 10%, so a 13% wax adds no headroom for them. In CSI 464, 10% is also the wax limit. Oil wording quoted from CSI product pages; wax ceilings from wax pages; verified 24 September 2026.
All five picked oils state a maximum of 10% (only Japanese Cherry Blossom, shown for contrast, goes higher), so in soy the oil page, not the wax, usually sets the limit. The shaded band (6–10%) is where to test. Two CSI soy waxes do not state a ceiling on their pages; if you use them, work inside the oil's own maximum and test from 6% upwards.
Straight answer
My relaxing soy candles smell good in the jar but faint when lit. Which oils should I use, and how do I test them properly in soy?
Use oils whose pages state a soy or candle load, so you know the ceiling you are working to: Lavender (₹270.00 for 50 g, "6-10% for candles"), Sandalwood (₹271.40, "up to 10% for soy"), Bergamot Amber (₹280.00, "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours"), Gardenia (₹223.02, "Up to 10% for soy wax candles") and Raat Ki Rani (₹370.00, "6-10% for candles"). Pour each at 6%, 8% and 10% of total weight in the soy wax you will sell in, on a C1 wick. Cure a full week before you judge, then burn for two to three hours and watch the melt pool. If a soft scent is faint and the pool has not reached the glass, change the wick before you change the load. In CSI 464 10% is both the oil maximum and the wax ceiling; going past it is not an option, and in our experience it is rarely the answer.
One line: in soy, a quiet candle is usually a wick or cure problem wearing a load problem's clothes.
The soy wax whose ceiling matches all five picks. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 per kg (₹0.51 per gram), priced the same per gram from 1 kg to 10 kg. Its page states up to 10% fragrance and a melt/pour of 80–90°C.

Why soft scents go quiet in soy

A relaxing candle is designed not to shout. In soy, it can end up whispering.

Relaxing scents are soft on purpose. Lavender with a musk base, creamy sandalwood, velvety gardenia: none of them has the sharp citrus or spice top that announces a candle from the doorway. Which families people describe as relaxing, and how to write about them without claims, is covered in Relaxing Fragrance Oils for Candle Making; this page starts from the other end, with the wax.

Soy is a common choice for small-batch container candles, and it is commonly described by makers as having a gentler hot throw than paraffin. We have no lab measurements to quantify that, and it varies by blend, but the practical pattern is familiar: a soft oil in soy often smells rich cold, then more muted lit, and improves over the first week or two of cure. Three things follow from it.

First, soft scents are the ones most likely to be under-judged. A lavender candle burned on day two and declared "weak" might be fine on day ten. Second, the melt pool matters more than usual. A soy candle with a narrow pool is releasing scent from only part of its surface. Third, load has a hard stop. Each of the five picks states a maximum of 10%, and CSI 464's ceiling is also 10%, so the usual beginner reaction (add more oil) runs out of room fast. That is why the test plan below changes wick and cure time before it touches the load.

Mistake: judging a soft soy candle on its first burn at 48 hours. Fix: keep one candle of every load aside and re-burn it at day 7 and day 14. If the scent grows, you had a cure problem, not an oil problem. Of these five, only Bergamot Amber's page states a cure time (48–72 hours); for the others, a week is our judgement and common practice.

Two ceilings: the load you are allowed

Load means oil as a percentage of total candle weight: 8% of a 150 g candle is 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax. Two stated figures limit it. The oil page says how much of that oil the maker recommends in a candle; the wax page says how much fragrance the wax is formulated to hold. The lower of the two governs. These are formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and the maximum is not the best-performing load. The chart above shows both for the oils on this page.

CSI soy waxes · page wording and price, 24 September 2026
What each soy wax states, and what 138 g of it costs
Wax Stated fragrance ceiling Temperatures on page 1 kg Per gram Wax in one 8% candle
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10% melt/pour 80–90°C ₹507.40 ₹0.51 ₹70.02
Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 up to 13% pour 58–60°C ₹650.00 ₹0.65 ₹89.70
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% not quoted here ₹599.00 ₹0.60 ₹82.66
Eco Soy CSI 400 not stated on page not quoted here ₹399.00 ₹0.40 work inside the oil maximum
Natural Soy Pearl Wax not stated on page not quoted here ₹450.00 ₹0.45 work inside the oil maximum

Read the table with the chart. For Lavender, Sandalwood, Bergamot Amber, Gardenia and Raat Ki Rani, the oil page caps you at 10% whichever wax you choose; a 13% wax does not let you use more of them. The only oil in the chart where the wax matters is Japanese Cherry Blossom ("6-13% for candles"), which can go to 13% in CSI 468 or Chunks but stops at 10% in CSI 464. For the two waxes without a stated ceiling, the oil's own maximum is the only stated figure you have: test from 6% and stop at 10%.

What a percentage point costs
Going from 8% to 10% adds 3 g of oil to a 150 g candle. For Lavender at the 50 g price that is ₹16.20 more per candle; for Raat Ki Rani, ₹22.20. Small per candle, but only worth paying if the 10% candle actually passes the burn test.

Five relaxing oils with a stated soy load

For a soy test, the most useful thing an oil page can give you is a number. All five of these do.

Chosen for a soft, commonly-relaxing character and, above all, a stated candle or soy load, so your test has a defined ceiling. We have no throw data and rank on stated notes, stated load, per-gram price and stock. Candle counts are 150 g candles at 8% (12 g of oil).

1
herbal · the relaxing benchmark
Lavender Fragrance Oil
Every relaxing range needs a lavender, and this one is written for candles: "fresh lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes, and soft musk base", with "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles". The page describes it as "A strong, IFRA-certified lavender fragrance oil" (the page's wording; documentation on request). Two verified reviews above mention hot throw after burning, which is encouraging for soy though not a measurement. Limitation: the fresh top is the first thing a soy candle spends; judge it late in the burn.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹105.02 ₹7.00 1
50 gm ₹270.00 ₹5.40 4
100 gm ₹540.00 ₹5.40 8
500 gm ₹2,620.00 ₹5.24 41
1 kg ₹5,221.00 ₹5.22 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹64.80 at 50 g. 50 g and 100 g are the same ₹5.40 per gram. Buy Lavender
2
creamy wood · the steady base
Sandalwood Fragrance Oil
A single-note wood, "warm, creamy, luxurious ... with a smooth woody aroma and subtle earthy undertone", stated at "up to 10% for soy, up to 6% for paraffin". Single-note oils are the easiest to read in a soy test because there is no bright top to fade; what you smell at the end is what you smelled at the start. That makes Sandalwood a good control candle for judging your wick and cure. Limitation: quiet by nature; in our judgement it is the pick most likely to need the C2 wick in a wider jar.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹93.22 ₹6.21 1
50 gm ₹271.40 ₹5.43 4
100 gm ₹502.68 ₹5.03 8
500 gm ₹2,513.40 ₹5.03 41
1 kg ₹5,026.80 ₹5.03 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹65.14 at 50 g; flat ₹5.03 per gram from 100 g. Buy Sandalwood
3
citrus amber · the only stated cure time
Bergamot Amber Fragrance Oil
The one oil here whose page gives both a soy load and a cure: "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours. 6-8% for paraffin wax". Its notes run "sparkling bergamot and citrus top notes, warm amber and soft floral heart, woody musk and smooth vanilla base": brighter than the others at the top, softly warm underneath, which makes it the relaxing oil for a living room rather than a bedroom. Limitation: the vanilla base can drift sweet at 10%; compare 8% and 10% carefully.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹105.02 ₹7.00 1
50 gm ₹280.00 ₹5.60 4
100 gm ₹560.00 ₹5.60 8
500 gm ₹2,718.00 ₹5.44 41
1 kg ₹5,437.00 ₹5.44 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹67.20 at 50 g; the 1 kg is 2.9% cheaper per gram. Buy Bergamot Amber
4
creamy white floral · the velvet one
Gardenia Fragrance Oil
"Rich, creamy, and velvety - a true-to-life gardenia bloom", stated at "Up to 10% for soy wax candles ... Up to 6% for paraffin wax candles"; the page calls it "A luxurious, IFRA-certified gardenia fragrance oil" (the page's wording). Creamy white florals tend to hold their shape in soy better than airy ones, in our judgement, because the body of the scent is in the heart rather than the top. It is also the least expensive of the five picks at every size from 50 g (at 15 g, Sandalwood is cheaper). Limitation: rich florals can feel heavy in a small, closed room; test the 6% candle in the smallest room you have.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹105.02 ₹7.00 1
50 gm ₹223.02 ₹4.46 4
100 gm ₹433.00 ₹4.33 8
500 gm ₹2,166.00 ₹4.33 41
1000 gm ₹4,332.00 ₹4.33 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹53.52 at 50 g; flat ₹4.33 per gram from 100 g (2.9% below 50 g). Buy Gardenia
5
night jasmine · the evening floral
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Fragrance Oil
The Indian night-blooming jasmine, a scent with strong evening associations. Stated notes: "Top Notes: Green Stems, Fresh Ozone | Middle Notes: Night-Blooming Jasmine, White Florals | Base Notes: Soft Amber, Musk"; stated load "6-10% for candles". The green, ozonic top keeps it lighter than a plain jasmine. Limitation: the dearest of the five picks (₹7.40 per gram at 50 g), and an airy top that soy will spend early; its base is what you are really buying.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹130.00 ₹8.67 1
50 gm ₹370.00 ₹7.40 4
100 gm ₹700.00 ₹7.00 8
500 gm ₹3,387.00 ₹6.77 41
1 kg ₹6,774.00 ₹6.77 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹88.80 at 50 g; the 1 kg is 8.5% cheaper per gram. Buy Raat Ki Rani

Softer, greener options such as Cucumber Green Tea and the calm-character florals are covered in Calming Fragrance Oils for Candle Making; the price tiers of lavender, sandalwood and floral oils, including perfume-grade listings, are in Lavender, Sandalwood and Floral Fragrance Oils for Relaxing Candles.

The soy test plan for soft scents

Change one thing at a time: load first, then wick, then time. Never all three at once.

Twenty candles in 150 g Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lid: fifteen to find each oil's load on a C1 wick, then five to check whether a C2 wick improves the winner. The basket — five oils at 50 g, 3 kg of CSI 464 (₹1,522.20), a pack of 20 jars (₹1,888.00), 20 C1 wicks (₹118.00) and 10 C2 wicks (₹94.40) — is ₹5,037.02, or ₹251.85 per candle before freight and GST. You also need a scale reading to 1 g and a thermometer.

1
Weigh for total weightPer 150 g candle: 6% = 9 g oil + 141 g wax; 8% = 12 g + 138 g; 10% = 15 g + 135 g. Five oils at three loads use 180 g of oil and 2,070 g of wax. Each 50 g bottle then has 14 g left: enough for the step-6 C2 candle at 6% or 8%, but not at 10% (15 g).
2
Follow the wax page for temperature, identically every timeCSI 464's page gives melt/pour at 80–90°C; CSI 468's gives a pour of 58–60°C. The oil pages here do not state an add-oil temperature, so keep yours the same for all fifteen candles and write it down. Stir gently for a full two minutes so the oil binds evenly.
3
Pour, centre the C1 wick, cool slowlySame room, away from fans and open windows. Soy that cools unevenly can frost or pull from the glass; both are cosmetic, but note them.
4
Cold-sniff at day 3, burn at day 7Bergamot Amber's page states 48–72 hours; for the other four, at least a week is our judgement for soft scents in soy. Burn one candle per session for two to three hours in the same closed room.
5
Record three things per burnScent presence at 30 minutes and 2 hours (1–5), melt pool diameter at 2 hours (full to the glass, or how many millimetres short), and any soot or flickering.
6
Pick each oil's lowest passing load, then change the wickPour one candle per oil at that load on a C2 wick. If the pool now reaches the glass and the scent rises, the wick was the problem. If the C2 candle soots or the flame is tall, go back to C1.
7
Re-burn the keepers at day 14Soft oils in soy often read stronger after two weeks. Your final decision uses the day-14 burn, not the day-7 one.

Wick and melt pool: the lever that matters most

For soft scents in soy, the melt pool is where the fragrance comes from. A pool that reaches the glass in two to three hours is releasing scent from the whole surface; a narrow pool is using a fraction of it, and tends to tunnel. Two practical points:

Jar diameter decides the wick, not the oil. CSI's jar listings mostly do not state an inside diameter, so no chart can tell you the right wick for your jar. The Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1, ₹5.90 each in a pack of 20) and Thick (C2, ₹9.44 each) are starting points; Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made (₹12.00 each in a pack of 10) are another option to test. Run a melt-pool test in your jar with your wax and your oil. See the Candle Wicks collection for every size.

Heavier, creamier oils can need a step up. In our judgement, creamy and woody oils such as Sandalwood and Gardenia are more likely to need the C2 in a 150 g jar than a lighter lavender, because they add body to the melted wax. That is a hypothesis for your test, not a rule; the melt pool is the judge.

Argued against our own interest: when a soft soy candle is faint, the cheapest fix is almost never a new oil. A C2 wick costs ₹9.44; a new 50 g bottle costs ₹223.02 to ₹370.00. Before you buy a "stronger" oil from us, retest the one you have on a bigger wick and give it until day 14. If you are stuck, message us on WhatsApp with your jar, wax, load and a photo of the melt pool.

CSI 464 or coconut soy CSI 468?

The wax is the biggest ingredient in the candle. It deserves its own test.

Most of this guide assumes Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, because its 10% ceiling matches all five picks and it is the least expensive per candle of the container soy waxes with a stated ceiling. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 is the coconut-soy alternative; its page states up to 13% and a pour of 58–60°C. For these five oils its extra ceiling is unusable, so the choice is about finish, feel and how your soft scent performs in it, which only a side-by-side burn can show.

Worked example: a Lavender candle at 8% in CSI 464 costs ₹235.12 in materials (oil ₹64.80, wax ₹70.02, jar ₹94.40, C1 wick ₹5.90). In CSI 468 it is ₹254.80: ₹19.68 more per candle, all of it in the wax. Both exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Run a wax duel on one oil
Add a 500 g bag of CSI 468 (₹325.00) and a 10-pack of jars (₹944.00): ₹1,269.00 more, ₹6,306.02 in total. Pour your best oil at its winning load in both waxes (the 50 g test bottle will be nearly empty, so use oil from your first 500 g reorder), same wick, same cure, and burn them on consecutive evenings. Choose the wax on the burn, not the price.
Christmas 25 December 2026 and winter: long evenings indoors suit soft, relaxing candles. Finish the three-week soy test in October, then reorder at 500 g: Lavender 500 g (₹2,620.00) and Sandalwood 500 g (₹2,513.40) together are ₹5,133.40, 82 candles at 8%. WhatsApp us for a quote with GST invoice.

Too faint, too heavy, tunnelling: a fault table

What you see on the burn, the likely cause in soy, and the one change to make next. Change one variable per retest.

Soft scents in soy · fault finding
In our judgement, most faults in relaxing soy candles are wick or cure problems
What you notice Likely cause Change next
Strong cold, faint lit; pool short of the glass Wick too small for the jar Same load on C2
Strong cold, faint lit; full pool Cure too short, or load too low Re-burn at day 14; then try the next load up (max 10%)
Faint cold and lit Load low for this oil, or the oil is simply soft Next load up; if 10% is still faint, try a different oil
Heavy or cloying in a small room Load too high for a creamy oil Drop to 6%; test in the room size you sell for
Tunnelling after first burn First burn too short, or wick too small Burn until the pool reaches the glass; then C2
Soot, tall or flickering flame Wick too large, or load too high Back to C1, or down one load
Oil beads on the surface or in the jar Over the wax or oil ceiling, or poor mixing Stay within 10%; stir two full minutes
White bloom on top, uneven sides Frosting and cooling marks, common in soy Cosmetic; slower cooling helps; does not affect scent
Mistake: blaming the oil after one faint burn and ordering five new ones. Fix: work down the table. We would rather sell you one C2 pack than five oils you did not need.
The CSI principle
In soy, fix the wick and the wait before you touch the load.
Each of the five picks stops at 10%. The candle that throws well at 8% on the right wick after two weeks is a better product, and a cheaper one, than the candle forced to 10% on the wrong wick after two days.
"Soft scents are not weak scents. They are scents that ask for a patient maker."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, soy waxes, jars and wicks named here and does not sell finished candles. This page recommends changing a wick before buying another oil, points out that a 13% wax adds nothing for these oils, and prices the dearer coconut soy option honestly.

Every price, pack size and per-gram figure was taken from CSI's live store and verified on 24 September 2026; all five oils are in stock at every size on that date. Oil loads, notes, cure wording and IFRA wording are quoted from each product page; wax ceilings and temperatures from the wax pages. Where a page does not state a figure, we say so.

The observation that soft scents throw more quietly in soy, the three-week calendar, the wick hypotheses and the fault table are our judgement and common practice, not measurements; CSI has no lab throw data, and makes no claim that any scent affects health, mood or sleep. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my lavender soy candle not strong when burning?
Most often the melt pool is not reaching the edge of the jar, or the candle has not cured long enough. Check the pool at two hours; if it is short, retest on a larger wick at the same load. Re-burn at day 7 and day 14 before raising the load, and never exceed the 10% stated for Lavender.
What is the maximum fragrance load for soy wax candles?
It is the lower of the wax's ceiling and the oil's stated maximum. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state up to 13%. The five relaxing oils picked in this guide all state 10%, so 10% is the limit for them in any of these waxes.
How long should soy candles cure before testing?
Of the five oils in this guide, only Bergamot Amber's page states a cure (48–72 hours). For soft scents in soy, at least 48–72 hours is common practice and we would judge at day 7 and again at day 14.
Which wick for a 150 g soy candle?
Start with a C1 eco wick and run a melt-pool test; if the pool has not reached the glass in two to three hours, try a C2. The right wick depends on your jar's inside diameter, your wax and your oil, so no chart can replace the test.
Is coconut soy wax better than soy for relaxing candles?
Not automatically. CSI 468 states a 13% ceiling, but relaxing oils such as Lavender and Sandalwood stop at 10%, so the extra room is unused. It costs ₹19.68 more per 150 g candle than CSI 464. Burn both side by side with your oil and decide on the result.
Which relaxing fragrance oils work in soy wax?
Choose oils whose pages state a soy or candle load so your test has a clear ceiling. At CSI: Lavender, Sandalwood, Bergamot Amber, Gardenia and Raat Ki Rani, all stated at up to 10%, ₹1,414.42 for all five at 50 g on 24 September 2026.

About this guide: the soy-wax page of CSI's meditation and calm cluster: a test plan for soft, relaxing scents in soy, the two-ceilings rule, wick and cure, and a fault table. General relaxing scent families and copy are covered in post 1614. No oil in this guide is presented as having any effect on health, mood or sleep; all are fragrance oils, not essential oils.

Wax ceilings and temperatures as stated on wax pages (CSI 464 up to 10%, melt/pour 80–90°C; CSI 468 up to 13%, pour 58–60°C; Chunks up to 13%; CSI 400 and Natural Soy Pearl Wax not stated); ceilings are formulation limits, not regulatory limits.
