How Do I Choose Between a Fast-Evaporating Reed Diffuser Base and a Slower-Evaporating Base for a 100 ml Product?
Aktie
Which CSI base is slower? Longevity's page claims slower "cold diffusion"; Depth mentions "slow diffusion". No CSI page claims fast, and none publishes an evaporation rate.
What else changes speed? Reed count, room temperature, airflow and the bottle opening. Reeds are the cheapest dial — the three dials.
Is the slower base worth it? Per day of use, only if it lasts at least 10.1% longer than the neutral base with Palo Santo at 22%.
The short answer: choose the life you are selling, then the base that delivers it
A faster-evaporating setup puts more fragrance into the room per day and empties the bottle sooner. A slower one lasts longer and is usually quieter. For a 100 ml product, the right choice is whichever lands in your target zone: long enough to meet the life you promise, strong enough to pass a blind room score in the room you sell it for. So the first step is not choosing a base — it is writing down those two targets. A 100 ml fill at an example 1.00 g per ml is 100 g of liquid; if you promise 45 days, the bottle may lose no more than 2.22 g a day on average.
On the CSI side, only two base pages say anything about speed. Longevity Base's page claims slower "cold diffusion"; Depth Base's page mentions "slow diffusion". No CSI page describes a base as fast, and CSI publishes no evaporation rate for any of them. The neutral Pure Performance Base makes no speed claim at all. So the honest framing is not "fast base versus slow base" from a datasheet; it is a base whose page claims to be slower, tested against a neutral one — and a reed-count arm, because reed count moves the same dial and costs far less.
This page works through that test with Palo Santo — a woody, resinous oil in the families Longevity's page names — at 22% by weight, 100 ml in the 120 ml Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 120 ml, and white fibre reeds. It ends with a rule that tells you which base to buy for the life you are selling, or whether to change reed count instead.
| You promise | That is | Max average loss | At 0.95–1.05 g/ml |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 days | 4.3 weeks | 3.33 g/day | 3.17–3.50 g/day |
| 45 days | 6.4 weeks | 2.22 g/day | 2.11–2.33 g/day |
| 60 days | 8.6 weeks | 1.67 g/day | 1.58–1.75 g/day |
| 90 days | 12.9 weeks | 1.11 g/day | 1.06–1.17 g/day |
If you have not yet shortlisted bases by fragrance family, start with the base-selection pillar; for the load side of the same trade, how much fragrance oil to add is the pillar. This page owns the choice of speed.
Speed has three dials — the base is only one
How fast a reed diffuser empties depends on the carrier, the reeds and the surroundings. The carrier matters: a carrier that evaporates readily leaves the reed surface faster than one that does not. The reeds matter as much: more reeds expose more surface, and CSI's reed page says so directly — more reeds for stronger throw and faster diffusion, fewer for a subtler, longer-lasting result. The surroundings matter too: warm, moving air speeds evaporation, and the same bottle can empty noticeably faster in May than in January.
| Dial | Faster | Slower | Cost to change | Owned by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carrier | A more readily evaporating carrier | A carrier whose page claims slower diffusion, e.g. Longevity | A new base — from ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | 7930, 7929 |
| Reed count | More reeds (e.g. 8) | Fewer reeds (e.g. 6 or fewer) | ₹9.00 per white reed (50+ rate) | 7971 |
| Surroundings | Warm room, airflow, summer | Cool room, still air, winter | Free — but not yours to control after sale | 7975, 7976 |
| Bottle opening | Wider opening is commonly described as releasing more | Narrower opening or a reducer (not a CSI item) | A different bottle | 7976 |
| Load | Changes strength more than speed; very high loads can change flow | — | Oil cost | 7948 |
That table is why this test includes a reed-count arm. If the slower base, with two extra reeds, gives you the same g/day as the neutral base with its standard count — and a better score — you have learned how to place the same product anywhere on the speed curve by reed count alone. If the slower base with more reeds is still slower and scores no worse, it is the base for a long-life product. If it is slower and weaker, it has bought life at the cost of strength, and you have a decision to make.
The round: slower-claim base, two reed counts, neutral control
Ten bottles: three arms of three plus a capped hold-back. Every bottle holds 100 ml of blend — 100 g at the example density — at 22%: 22.0 g of oil and 78.0 g of base, weighed in.
| Arm | Bottles | Base | Reeds | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A — control | B1–B3 | Pure Performance Base | 6 | The neutral reference speed and score |
| B — slower claim | B4–B6 | Longevity Base | 6 | Is it slower, and is it still strong enough? |
| C — slower claim, more surface | B7–B9 | Longevity Base | 8 | Can reeds buy back strength while keeping the life? |
| Hold-back | B10 | Pure Performance Base | None, capped | Clarity and fresh-smell reference |
| Example density | 100 ml weighs | Oil at 22% | Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.95 g/ml | 95.0 g | 20.9 g | 74.1 g |

| 1.05 g/ml | 105.0 g | 23.1 g | 81.9 g |
| Bottle | Arm | Reeds | Fill g | g/day | Projected days | In target zone? | Blind d7 / d14 / d21 | Room °C range |

Plot each bottle on the map at the top of this page: g/day along the bottom, average blind score up the side, with your life line and strength line drawn in. An arm "lands in the zone" only if all three of its bottles do. If arm B is in the zone and arm A is to the right of the life line, the slower-claim base has done what its page says for this oil. If arm A is already in the zone, you do not need a slower base for this product. If B is below the strength line but C is in the zone, the slower base needs more reeds to be strong enough — and you now know the reed count to sell it with.
Cost per day: does the slower base pay for itself?
Longevity costs ₹1,296.00 per 500 ml against ₹1,099.00 for Pure Performance. At production rates — Palo Santo at its 1 kg rate of ₹6.02 per gram, each base at its 500 ml price at the example 1.00 g per ml — the liquid in one 100 ml bottle costs ₹303.84 in Pure Performance and ₹334.57 in Longevity, a ratio of 1.101. So Longevity matches the neutral base on cost per day of use if it lasts at least 10.1% longer. Anything beyond that is a saving per day for your customer, and a longer-life claim for you.
| If the Pure Performance bottle lasts | PP liquid cost per day | Longevity cost per day at the same life | Longevity must last at least |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 days | ₹10.13 | ₹11.15 | 33.0 days |
| 45 days | ₹6.75 | ₹7.43 | 49.6 days |
| 60 days | ₹5.06 | ₹5.58 | 66.1 days |
Bottle (₹106.20) and reeds (6 white at ₹9.00, ₹54.00) are the same for both routes, so they do not change the comparison. Two more lines matter commercially. First, a longer-life claim is only worth something if you can make it truthfully: use your measured days in the room you tested, and say so. Second, a customer who finds the bottle quiet in week one may not wait for week six. That is why the strength line sits in the target zone as firmly as the life line. Is a dearer base worth it at a lower load? explores the case where a base costs more but lets you use less oil, and the most economical fragrance percentage sets load against life and throw.

The decision rule
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Any arm clouded at 24–48 h or 7 days | Compatibility, not speed | Fix the load first — 7927 |
| Arm A is in the target zone | The neutral base already delivers this product | Buy Pure Performance 500 ml at ₹1,099.00; no slower base needed |
| Arm A is too fast, arm B is in the zone | The slower-claim base does what you need | Buy Longevity 500 ml at ₹1,296.00; sell with 6 reeds |
| Arm B is too quiet, arm C is in the zone | Slower base plus more reeds | Buy Longevity; sell with 8 reeds |
| Arms B and C are both too quiet | Slower life at the cost of strength | Stay with the neutral base and trim reeds instead — 7971 |
| Every arm is too fast | The room or season runs hot | Fewer reeds or a narrower opening before any base change — 7930 |
| Every arm is too quiet | Strength, not speed, is the problem | Load, oil or room — 7962, 7946 |
Write the base, reed count, measured g/day, projected days and blind scores on the product's formula sheet, with the room temperature range. If you later sell a second size — a 50 ml version, for instance — repeat the round; the target zone moves with fill weight, and a reed count that works in 120 ml rarely transfers unchanged. Comparing two bases on five measures gives the full comparison sheet.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy answer for a base seller is "buy the long-life base". This page points out that no CSI base publishes an evaporation rate, treats Longevity's slower-diffusion line as a claim to test, shows how much longer it must last to justify its price, and puts a reed-count arm in the test because it is often the cheaper fix.
Base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026; fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, ml-to-gram conversion, per-bottle cost, kit total and cost-per-day figure on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity or evaporation data for its bases, so every density used here is a labelled example and every g/day figure is either yours to measure or a labelled arithmetic grid.
Bottle counts per arm, weighing days, the clarity checkpoints, the room-scoring protocol and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 45-day life target, the score-3 strength line, the 1.00 g per ml density and the day counts in the cost-per-day table are labelled examples; the 100 ml fill is the reader's product size. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Where millilitres are turned into grams, the page uses a labelled example density of 1.00 g per ml with a ±5% sensitivity (0.95–1.05 g/ml) — weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours; the 120 ml and 50 ml bottle sizes are listing sizes, not fill lines. Worked example: 100 ml fill in the Gold 120 ml bottle = 100 g at the example density; at 22% = 22.0 g oil + 78.0 g base. Life targets 30, 45, 60, 90 days → maximum g/day = fill g ÷ days. Working practices: 3 bottles per arm plus 1 capped hold-back, 6 or 8 white reeds, one flip at 3 hours for every bottle, 5% allowance, weighings on days 0–28, blind scores on days 7, 14 and 21, room temperature logged. One 500 ml of Longevity covers arms B and C only at a density of 0.983 g/ml or more. Cost per day uses the oil's 1 kg rate and each base's 500 ml price at the example density; Longevity/Pure Performance liquid-cost ratio = 1.101. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI measurements): every base page gives a 10–30% fragrance range of the total blend and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", all families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance", "flip reeds after the first hour"; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases", 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — "perfumery-grade", floral, citrus, green and fruity families; Depth — warmth, roundness, "slow diffusion", chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils"; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand. Marketing lines such as "performs in Indian climates", "no separation" and "even wicking" are claims to test. Some base pages mention rattan; CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any base, and no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; reed diameter, bottle neck size and fill line are not published. No CSI base is ranked above another on this page — the five are separated only by what their own pages say they are for. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST.
