At the temperature stated on the page of the wax you actually bought — which is 80–90°C on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and 85°C on Eco Soy CSI 400. Two of CSI's waxes publish an add temperature, two publish only melt and pour, and two fragrance oil pages quote a different figure entirely, so this guide tells you which number governs your batch and exactly what to write down.

Quick answers — read this first
What is the add temperature? Whatever your wax page states. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: "Recommended fragrance add temp 80-90°C". Eco Soy CSI 400: "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly", plus "Fragrance Add Temperature 80 to 90 degrees".

What about the other waxes? The CSI 464 page states melt and pour both as 80°C – 90°C but no add temperature. The CSI 468 page states melt 50°C – 53°C and pour 58°C – 60°C, also with none. Ask CSI rather than borrowing a figure from another wax.

Why do I see 60–65°C quoted? Because two CSI fragrance oil pages say it — Blue Ocean says to add "to wax that has been cooled to the recommended temperature for your wax type - typically 60-65°C for soy wax". That is a general remark deferring to your wax; your wax page's band is the one that describes your wax.

What do I actually do? Read the wax page, buy a thermometer, pick one number inside the band, write down the reading rather than the target, and keep it identical every batch.
The short answer
The wax page governs: add temperature is a property of the wax, so use the band printed on the wax you bought — 80–90°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 85°C within 80–90°C for Eco Soy CSI 400. Never transplant one wax's figure onto another.
Where the wax page is silent, ask rather than guess: CSI 464 and CSI 468 publish melt and pour temperatures but no add temperature. Their pour figures are not add figures, and CSI 468's whole working range sits 20–30°C below the soy waxes.
A stated flash point is a handling figure, not a recipe: some oil pages add their own instruction — Gardenia states "Flashpoint 98°C - add to wax below this temperature". Follow the wax band and any instruction the oil page gives; where both cannot be met, ask CSI for the SDS before pouring.

What temperature should fragrance oil be added to candle wax at?
The temperature printed on the page of the wax in your pot, because add temperature is a property of the wax and not of the oil. Two CSI waxes publish one. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states "Recommended fragrance add temp 80-90°C" with a pour of 70–80°C (its details table also gives 75–80°C, so work in the overlap). Eco Soy CSI 400 is more specific still: "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly", with a stated "Fragrance Add Temperature 80 to 90 degrees". Two others publish none: CSI 464 states melting point and pour both as 80°C – 90°C, and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states melt 50°C – 53°C and pour 58°C – 60°C — a working range 20–30°C below the soy waxes, which is why you cannot carry 85°C across on the assumption that soy is soy. Separately, two CSI oil pages describe a soy add temperature of "typically 60-65°C", and that is where most of the confusion comes from. Resolve it by whose page describes your material: the wax page describes your wax, so its band is your band; an instruction an oil page gives about that specific oil — Gardenia's "add to wax below this temperature" — is an extra constraint, not a replacement. Then buy a ₹354 thermometer, pick one number inside the band, and log the reading you actually got.
One line: the add temperature belongs to the wax, not the oil — 80–90°C on Chunks, 85°C on Eco Soy CSI 400, and a question for CSI on the two waxes whose pages stay silent.
You cannot follow a stated band without reading the wax. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354 and a Candle Making Weighing Scale is ₹354 — ₹708 for the pair, and they are the two cheapest purchases that make any recipe on this site repeatable.

What every CSI wax page states, verbatim

There is no universal add temperature for candle wax, and the reason is visible the moment you put four waxes in one table.

Every figure below is quoted from the linked product page as published in September 2026 — nothing estimated, nothing carried across from one wax to another. Where a page says nothing, the table says nothing, and that blank is information.

Three things matter more than the numbers. Only two of the four pages publish an add temperature, so the question in this article's title has no single answer at CSI, let alone across every Indian supplier. The Chunks page states its pour twice with different wording (75–80°C in the table, 70–80°C in the steps), so work in the overlap. And CSI 468 melts at 50–53°C and pours at 58–60°C — a maker who learned "85°C" on Chunks and switched to coconut-soy would be working roughly 25°C above anything that wax's page mentions.

The mistake: treating a pour temperature as an add temperature. They describe different moments. On Chunks the two differ — add at 80–90°C, pour at 75–80°C — which tells you the sequence: melt, weigh in the oil hot, stir, let the blend fall a few degrees, then fill. On CSI 464 melt and pour are the same 80°C – 90°C and no add temperature is stated, so there is no published sequence to read off it. If your wax page states no add temperature, ask CSI on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926 — a one-minute question with a definite answer, and cheaper than a 20-jar batch.
One convention note, stated once
The Chunks page phrases its load as a percentage "of total wax weight". This series calculates load as a share of the finished candle — 200 g at 8% is 184 g of wax plus 16 g of oil. Both conventions circulate and they give slightly different grams, so write the convention on the recipe sheet next to the temperature. Arithmetic in how much fragrance oil to use in a candle.

When the oil page and the wax page disagree

This is the part that actually confuses people, and both sources are real and published. Two CSI fragrance oil pages describe a soy add temperature in passing. Blue Ocean: "Always add fragrance to wax that has been cooled to the recommended temperature for your wax type - typically 60-65°C for soy wax." Gardenia: "For soy wax, the standard addition temperature of 60-65°C is well within the safe range." Meanwhile the two wax pages that publish a figure say 80–90°C and 85°C.

Read the wording carefully and the tension mostly dissolves. Both sentences point back at "the recommended temperature for your wax type" — the wax's own figure — then offer a general industry number as illustration. Neither is a specification for CSI's soy waxes; that lives on the wax pages. Hence the rule this cluster uses: the wax page's band is the band, and an instruction an oil page gives about that particular oil is an extra constraint on top of it.

Test the rule on a real case. Gardenia states "Flashpoint 98°C" and instructs: "add this fragrance oil to wax at a temperature below 98°C (the flashpoint)". The Chunks band is 80–90°C. Every point in it is below 98°C, so both instructions are satisfiable at once — you work in the wax's band and the oil's condition is met automatically. That is the normal case for most of the range, because the eighteen CSI oil pages publishing a measured flash point mostly state values between 185°C and 206°C.

The case that needs a phone call, not a workaround. Neroli states "Flashpoint: 85°C" — the lowest measured value in the range — and gives no add-temperature instruction of its own. Beside a wax band of 80–90°C the two overlap only at the bottom. This guide will not invent a rule to bridge that gap, because inventing rules about flash points is how makers end up with advice that sounds physical and isn't. Instead: work at the bottom of your wax's stated band, ask CSI for that oil's SDS and handling guidance before you scale, and burn test the result. The same applies to Palo Santo at a stated 93°C.

Flash point is not an add temperature

The most confidently repeated rule in candle making is a category error, and it costs makers good oils.

A flash point is a measured handling and transport classification: the lowest temperature, under a defined laboratory test, at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with air. It is not a statement about how much fragrance survives in wax, not a quality score, and not a recipe instruction. Despite that, "add below the flash point" circulates as though it were a law of physics, and it produces two wrong conclusions: that a high stated flash point means a better oil, and that a wax's band can be overridden by arithmetic on one.

The shape of CSI's published data is the point. Eighteen of the 107 fragrance oil pages state a specific measured flash point. Another 32 state only "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" — a shared threshold sentence on perfume-grade listings; it is not a measurement of that oil and must never be read as one. One page, Zesty Lemon, says only "Flashpoint Available on request / SDS". And 56 state nothing at all — for those, ask CSI for the SDS figure.

Note what that table does and does not license. It lets you say most CSI oils with a published measurement sit far above any wax's stated add band, so for those the question is not live, and that three published values — 85°C, 93°C, 98°C — sit close to or inside the soy band, making those the ones to ask about. It does not let you rank the range by flash point as a proxy for quality, or publish a flash point for the other 89 oils. If a page has no number, the number is not public.

Measuring it properly: where the thermometer goes

A stated band is worthless if the number you read is wrong, and wax makes a wrong number easy. Molten soy in a pitcher is not one temperature — it is a gradient, hottest against the metal. Four habits account for most of the variation between two batches a maker swears were identical.

The equipment question is small. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354; its page does not publish a temperature range, so confirm it covers your band before a production run. A Candle Making Weighing Scale is also ₹354 — load is a weight percentage, and a recipe logged in millilitres is not reproducible. ₹708 buys both, less than the oil in nine 200 g candles at 8% using Lavender at ₹5.221 per gram.

Holding the temperature is a separate problem from reading it. Adding oil to a small melt drops the temperature immediately, and in a cool room a pitcher can fall out of the band while you are still stirring. CSI customer Arzoo Vyas describes exactly this on the Mini Electric Wax Melter: "My temperature would drop within seconds due to which I was not getting a good hot throw." A melter that holds a set temperature (₹2,360 for the 1 litre unit) removes that variable; a pitcher on a hob does not.

The five lines worth logging

A maker who cannot say what temperature last month's batch went in at also cannot say why this month's is different. The fix is five lines per pour, written at the bench while the wax is still liquid — not from memory, and not as targets but as the readings you actually got, including the ones that missed.

The CSI principle
An add temperature is not a number you choose. It is a number you read off the wax, hit on purpose, and write down.
Two makers using the same oil and disagreeing about temperature are almost never disagreeing about chemistry. One has a wax whose page states 80–90°C, one has a wax whose page states nothing, and neither has a sheet. The sheet is the cheap part.

Choosing your point inside the band

A band of 80–90°C is ten degrees wide, and ten degrees is room enough for two makers to get different candles while both following the page. So pick a point deliberately, then stop moving it. The cheap way to pick it: pour one small batch across the band, hold every other variable still, and read the result off a score sheet.

Run it as three pairs: two jars added at 81°C, two at 85°C, two at 89°C — bottom, middle and top of the Chunks band, all inside it. Same melt, same 9.6 g per jar, same two minutes of stirring, same pour in 75–80°C, same wick, same room. Label the bases, tape over the labels, score cold throw blind at day 2, 7 and 14, then burn one jar of each pair for hot throw. Two jars per temperature is the minimum that separates a temperature effect from ordinary jar-to-jar variation.

Do not test outside the band to "see what happens". A fourth pair at 100°C teaches you nothing usable: you cannot put an out-of-specification process into production, so its result cannot change a decision. Keep every arm inside the figure your wax page states. Above and below the band are failure modes, not options — covered in added too hot and added too cold.

Two oils that make the decision concrete

Both are chosen for what their pages state about temperature, not for their scent families — one with a wide published margin, one that forces the question. Each table lists every size with the per-kilogram price and how many 120 g jars at 8% (9.6 g of oil) a pack covers. Per-candle figures use 1 kg pricing.

The page states "Flashpoint 192°C" and says this "gives comfortable working temperature margins" — the whole 80–90°C band sits far from anything that classification is about, so the test measures what you want it to. Included because honesty beats tidiness. Neroli states "Flashpoint: 85°C" — the lowest measured value published anywhere in the CSI range — and gives no add-temperature instruction of its own. Against a band of 80–90°C that leaves a very narrow overlap, and this guide will not manufacture a rule to close it. Work at the bottom of your wax's stated band, ask CSI for the SDS and handling guidance before you commit a batch, and burn test the result. What an unlogged temperature costs at scale

On six jars an unrecorded add temperature costs nothing you would notice. On a festive run it is the difference between a recipe and a guess. Take 500 candles of 200 g at an 8% load: 500 × 16 g = 8 kg of fragrance oil and 500 × 184 g = 92 kg of wax.

The oil bill alone, at 1 kg pricing, runs from ₹24,544 for 8 kg of British Rose at ₹3,068 per kilogram to ₹41,768 for 8 kg of Lavender at ₹5,221. At what temperature should I add fragrance oil to soy wax?
At the temperature your soy wax page states. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states "Recommended fragrance add temp 80-90°C"; Eco Soy CSI 400 states 85°C (185°F) within "80 to 90 degrees". No single figure covers all soy waxes — the CSI 464 page states none, only melt and pour as 80°C – 90°C. Pick one number inside your wax's band and keep it fixed.
Is 65°C too cold to add fragrance oil?
It is below the band both CSI wax pages that publish one actually state, so on those waxes it is outside specification rather than simply "cooler". Two CSI oil pages do call 60–65°C typical for soy, but both sentences defer to "the recommended temperature for your wax type". Adding below your wax's band risks incomplete incorporation — mechanism in added too cold. Follow the wax page; ask CSI if it is silent.
Should I add fragrance oil below its flash point?
Where the oil's own page tells you to, yes — Gardenia states "add to wax below this temperature" for its stated 98°C. But a flash point is a measured handling classification, not a recipe number, and it must never be used to override your wax page's band. The two rarely conflict: most of the 18 CSI oils with a published measurement state values between 185°C and 206°C, far above any add band. Where they do, ask for the SDS.
What temperature do I add fragrance to coconut soy wax at?
The Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 page states no fragrance add temperature. It states "Melting Point 50°C – 53°C" and "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C" with a ceiling of "Up to 13%" — melt and pour figures, neither of them an add figure. Do not carry 80–90°C across from a soy wax: CSI 468's whole stated range sits 20–30°C lower. Ask CSI before your first batch on it.
Does the add temperature change with the fragrance load?
The stated band does not. What changes is how far the melt falls when the oil goes in: 16 g into a 200 g candle's worth of wax is a smaller thermal insult than 26 g at the 13% ceiling Chunks states. Do I need a thermometer, or can I judge it by eye?
You need one. Molten soy looks identical at 70°C and 90°C, and a 20°C error covers the distance between a wax's stated pour band and the top of its add band. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354 — its page publishes no temperature range, so confirm it covers your band first. Measure mid-depth after one slow stir and log the reading, not the target.
