Best Fragrance Oils for Scented Tealight Candles
शेयर करना
Which fragrance oils are best for tealights? There is no measured ranking. The eight worth testing first cover the main families: Lavender, Sandalwood, Cinnamon Vanilla, Citrus Lemon, Jasmine, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Japanese Cherry Blossom and Vanilla Bean. The shortlist table gives the reason for each.
How much fragrance oil goes in one tealight? In an illustrative 12 g tealight at an 8% load, 0.96 g. In a 15 g tealight, 1.2 g. How much oil in tealights covers 6% and 10% as well.
What does the fragrance cost per tealight? At the 100 g rate, from ₹2.88 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹7.58 (Vanilla Bean) for a 12 g tealight at 8%. Wax adds ₹6.61. See the per-tealight cost.
The shortlist: eight oils to test first
CSI's Fragrance Oils collection lists 93 oils, and 51 of them have an in-stock 15 g tester. That is too many to test at once and more than most tealight ranges need. The eight below were chosen for reasons we can state: each covers a different scent family, each has a 15 g tester in stock so the first test costs under ₹131.00 per oil, and several sit near the top of the collection's best-selling sort on the pull date. None was chosen for measured throw, because we have not published throw measurements for any oil, in tealights or anywhere else.
| Oil | Family | 15 g tester | ₹/g at 100 g | Oil per tealight | Why it is on the list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | Herbal | ₹105.02 | ₹5.40 | ₹5.18 | First in CSI's best-selling sort; a calm, familiar profile for bath and bedside tealights |
| Sandalwood | Woody | ₹93.22 | ₹5.03 | ₹4.83 | Near the top of the sort; a warm base note that suits puja and festive tealights |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | Spiced gourmand | ₹106.20 | ₹4.84 | ₹4.64 | Spice plus vanilla — a profile makers commonly pick for projection in small formats |
| Citrus Lemon | Citrus | ₹81.42 | ₹3.00 | ₹2.88 | Lowest-cost oil in the collection; bright top notes for kitchen and dining tables |
| Jasmine | Indian floral | ₹103.00 | ₹4.30 | ₹4.13 | A floral buyers in India recognise at once; real 1 kg saving of 8.8% |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | Fresh / minty | ₹68.44 | ₹3.54 | ₹3.40 | Cheapest 15 g in the collection at ₹68.44; sharp, clean profile |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom | Soft floral | ₹104.00 | ₹5.00 | ₹4.80 | Near the top of the sort; a gentle floral for gift boxes of tealights |
| Vanilla Bean | Gourmand | ₹130.00 | ₹7.90 | ₹7.58 | A rich vanilla for a premium tealight tier — test it against the cheaper Cinnamon Vanilla |
Read the fifth column before the third. The tester price tells you what the experiment costs; the per-tealight figure tells you what the product costs once it sells. Across the shortlist the oil inside one tealight runs from ₹2.88 to ₹7.58, a spread of ₹4.70 a piece. On a single tealight that is small money. On a box of twelve, or a festive order of a thousand, it is the difference between a value line and a premium one, and bulk tealight production works through those volumes.
Two gaps are deliberate. There is no rose on the list because British Rose is the natural pick for a value line and is covered in buying oils for tealight making. And there is no designer-inspired oil, because at ₹9 to ₹24 a gram they make a tealight cost more in fragrance than in wax, which few tealight buyers will pay for. If your brand is built on one of those profiles, cost it first; Which Fragrances Work Best in Small Candles? explains why the most complex profiles are also the riskiest in a small candle.
Why a tealight is a different candle
In general candle-making practice a tealight behaves differently from a jar in three ways, and each one changes how you choose a fragrance. The melt pool is tiny. A few centimetres across at most, so the surface releasing scent is a fraction of a jar's. The burn is short. A tealight is usually lit for an evening, a dinner or a puja, not left for a week of three-hour sessions, so the fragrance has little time to build. And the fuel is almost all in the pool. Within a short time of lighting, much of a small tealight is liquid, which is why makers commonly find a tealight reaches its full scent quickly and then holds it until it runs out.
Those three facts point the same way. A tealight rewards profiles that announce themselves early — bright tops such as citrus and mint, and familiar middles such as lavender and jasmine — and it gives less room to scents that rely on a long, slow warm-up. That is reasoning from how small candles burn, not a measured result on CSI's oils. Which fragrances work best in small candles takes the argument further, family by family, and votive candles covers the larger 50 to 70 g format, where more of the jar-candle logic comes back.
The wax choice follows the same logic. A tealight cup is a small container, so container waxes are the natural place to start. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%, both as the wax maker's stated formulation maximum. Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets are also listed, but no fragrance ceiling for them is in our data; check the product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum, and treat 6–10% only as a starting range for tests.
Matching the scent family to the job
Tealights are bought for occasions more than for rooms. That makes the choice of family a question of what the tealight is for, which you know better than any catalogue. The table below is reasoning, not sales data: it matches each family on the shortlist to the uses buyers in India commonly light tealights for, and flags where the format works against the scent.
| Use | Family to test first | Oils | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diwali and festive boxes | Woody, spiced gourmand | Sandalwood, Cinnamon Vanilla | Dozens lit at once in one room — a heavy spice can crowd; test several together |
| Puja and daily lamp use | Woody, Indian floral | Sandalwood, Jasmine | Burned daily, often in small rooms: a softer load may be kinder |
| Bath and bedside | Herbal, soft floral | Lavender, Japanese Cherry Blossom | Short burns in a small room reach full scent fast — judge after 20–30 minutes |
| Dining and kitchen tables | Citrus, fresh | Citrus Lemon, Eucalyptus Spearmint | Near food, a light profile competes less with the meal |
| Wedding and gift boxes | Soft floral, gourmand | Japanese Cherry Blossom, Vanilla Bean | Recipients light them weeks later — cure and packaging matter |
| Under a warmer or diffuser | Not covered here | — | That is a different product; see wax melts |
The last row matters because tealights are also sold as the heat source for oil burners and wax-melt warmers. A tealight bought for that job is usually unscented, and scenting it is wasted oil. If warmers are your market, the fragrance belongs in the melt, not the tealight, and Best Fragrance Oils for Wax Melts in India covers that product properly.
What the fragrance costs per tealight
A tealight's material cost is small enough that makers stop costing it, and that is how a festive order ends up priced below cost. Here is the arithmetic for an illustrative 12 g tealight at 8%: 0.96 g of oil and 11.04 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, which is ₹6.61 of wax. The cup and wick are left out because CSI did not list them on the pull date; add your own supplier's figures.
| Oil | Oil per tealight | Wax | Oil + wax | Per box of 12 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2.88 | ₹6.61 | ₹9.49 | ₹113.92 |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | ₹3.40 | ₹6.61 | ₹10.01 | ₹120.14 |
| Jasmine | ₹4.13 | ₹6.61 | ₹10.74 | ₹128.89 |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | ₹4.64 | ₹6.61 | ₹11.26 | ₹135.09 |
| Sandalwood | ₹4.83 | ₹6.61 | ₹11.44 | ₹137.26 |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom | ₹4.80 | ₹6.61 | ₹11.41 | ₹136.96 |
| Lavender | ₹5.18 | ₹6.61 | ₹11.80 | ₹141.56 |
| Vanilla Bean | ₹7.58 | ₹6.61 | ₹14.20 | ₹170.36 |
This excludes the cup, the wick, labour, packaging, freight and GST, which you add in your own costing. Even so, the pattern is clear. With Citrus Lemon, oil and wax together come to ₹9.49 a tealight; with Vanilla Bean, ₹14.20. The wax is the same in every row. The fragrance is the variable, and it is still a matter of rupees, not tens of rupees, per piece — which is why the cup, the wick and the packaging usually decide a tealight's price more than the oil does.
The same maths also shows why the 15 g tester is fine for testing and poor for production. Lavender poured from 15 g bottles costs ₹6.72 of oil per tealight against ₹5.18 from the 100 g, a premium of ₹1.54 a piece. That is nothing on twenty test tealights and real money on two thousand. Buy Fragrance Oils for Tealight Candle Making sets out when to move from 15 g to 100 g and when to go to the kilo.
Cups and wicks: what CSI does not list
On 24 September 2026 we checked CSI's catalogue for tealight components and found no tealight cups and no tealight wicks. Nothing on this page should be read as saying CSI sells them. CSI does list small containers — Votive Glass Jars – Black, Mini Glass Jars, a Heart Cutout Velvet Jar with a 50 g wax capacity and a Golden Aluminium Tin with an 85 g fill — but those are votive-sized, not tealight cups. Buying oils for votive making prices them properly.
The same goes for wicks. CSI lists Eco Candle Wicks, Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made and Performance Wooden Wicks, but none is sold as a tealight wick, and wick sizing for a given cup is not published in our data. We will not tell you that any of them suits a tealight cup, because we do not know your cup. If you already have a cup supplier, ask them for the wick they size to it and burn-test it with your wax and oil.
Running your first test round
A tealight test is cheap and fast, which makes it easy to do badly. The steps below keep it fair: same wax, same cup, same wick, same load, only the oil changes.
Here are three oils from the shortlist that show three different buying situations for a tealight range: the best-seller for an everyday line, a woody base for festive and puja boxes, and a spiced gourmand for gift sets.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 12 g tealights at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹105.02 | ₹7.00 | 15.6 |
| 50 g | ₹270.00 | ₹5.40 | 52.1 |
| 100 g | ₹540.00 | ₹5.40 | 104 |
| 500 g | ₹2,620.00 | ₹5.24 | 521 |
| 1 kg | ₹5,221.00 | ₹5.22 | 1,042 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 12 g tealights at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 15.6 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 | 52.1 |
| 100 g | ₹502.68 | ₹5.03 | 104 |
| 500 g | ₹2,513.40 | ₹5.03 | 521 |
| 1 kg | ₹5,026.80 | ₹5.03 | 1,042 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 12 g tealights at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08 | 15.6 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 | 52.1 |
| 100 g | ₹483.80 | ₹4.84 | 104 |
| 500 g | ₹2,301.00 | ₹4.60 | 521 |
| 1 kg | ₹4,554.80 | ₹4.55 | 1,042 |
If a scent passes, the production step is simple. Two hundred 12 g tealights at 8% need 192 g of oil and 2208 g of wax, which is two 100 g bottles and three 1 kg bags of wax with room for pour loss. For a thousand or more, Bulk Fragrance Oils for Scented Tealight Production and Wholesale Fragrance Oils for Tealight Manufacturers take over, and Where to Buy Fragrance Oils for Commercial Tealight and Votive Production covers sourcing every component for commercial runs.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page recommends oils we sell, and it says plainly that we did not list tealight cups or tealight wicks on the pull date. It also says that for most tealight ranges the oil is a small part of the cost, which is not the line that sells the most oil.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026; container and wick listings were checked on 24–25 September 2026. Per-gram and per-tealight figures are plain arithmetic on those prices. We have no measured hot-throw, cold-throw or wax-compatibility data for any oil, so the shortlist is a reasoned starting point for your own tests, not a ranking.
The 12 g and 15 g tealight fills and the 8% load are illustrative working assumptions, not published cup sizes or recipes. Melt-pool and burn-time behaviour described here is general candle-making practice. For cups, wicks, bulk quotes, GST invoicing or IFRA certificates, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
