How Do I Determine Whether a Candle Needs a Different Wick Because of Fragrance Chemistry Rather than Jar Diameter, Wax or Manufacturing Variation?
शेयर करना
What does the kit look like? Twelve candles in your jar, three per cell: a control (failing oil, suspect wick pack, suspect jars), an oil arm (a light oil that passes, same pack and jars), a wick-pack arm (fresh C2 pack) and a jar arm (jars from your approved lot). Wax from one bag; every wick centred with a Wick Centering Device.
What does it cost? In the worked example, ₹2,575.12 of materials before jars. If oil, wax and jars come from stock, the cash order is a fresh C2 10-pack, three centering packs and a 50 g Eucalyptus Spearmint: ₹660.80. From nothing, ₹4,397.80.
Isn't it cheaper to just try a bigger wick? Yes: a Cotton Braided 10-pack and three candles is ₹815.28. Do that when only the oil changed. Run the kit when something else changed too (a new jar delivery, a new wick pack, a new wax bag), or when several products share the suspect part.

When you need the kit, and when you don't
Attribution earns its cost when more than one thing could explain the failure. The worked example is the cluster's 200 g jar: your own, 8.0 cm across the inside on your approved jar lot, filled to 200 g at 8% (16 g of oil + 184 g of CSI 464). CSI does not list a jar at 8 cm. Dark Vanilla was approved on C2 months ago; now, after a new jar delivery and a fresh wick order, its candles tunnel at burn 3. Three things changed at once: the jars, the wick pack and, quite possibly, nothing about the oil at all.
| Situation | Kit? | Instead |
|---|---|---|
| A new oil in an approved jar, wax and wick; nothing else changed | No | Run that oil's own ladder: the lavender-to-oud post |
| An approved candle starts failing after a new jar delivery, wick pack or wax bag | Yes | — |
| Several oils fail at once in the same jar | Yes, with the jar and pack arms first | — |
| One oil fails, others pass, and nothing changed | Partly: the oil arm and a centring check | The oil's ladder if the oil arm confirms it |
| Candles from the same batch disagree with each other | No new parts: a process check | Centring, pour temperature, cure, draught |
Argued against our own interest: the quick alternative, a Cotton Braided 10-pack and three Dark Vanilla candles on it, is ₹815.28 (₹12.00 a wick, ₹695.28 of candles), against ₹2,575.12 for the kit's twelve. It is the right move when only the oil changed. It is the wrong move when the jars did, because it buries a jar-lot problem under a bigger wick: move a whole 300-candle month to Cotton Braided to mask it and you pay ₹768.00 more a month in wicks for a fault that sits in the glass. How to organise jar effects and fragrance effects across a whole launch, with anchor rows and columns, is the three-jar, eight-fragrance post; this page is the one-order version for a single failing candle.

| Your jars, lot A (suspect) | 9 | your stock | yours | — | — |
| Your jars, lot B (approved) | 3 | your stock | yours | — | — |
| Cash | from stock: ₹660.80 · from nothing: ₹4,397.80 (excl. jars) · materials consumed: ₹2,575.12 (₹229.20 per Dark Vanilla candle, ₹170.77 per Eucalyptus Spearmint candle) | ||||
Three details matter more than they look. The wax comes from one bag, so wax is held constant across every cell; CSI publishes no lot data, so if you are buying fresh wax, buy a single 5 kg bag (flat per gram with the 1 kg, so it costs nothing extra per gram) rather than three separate 1 kg bags. The suspect pack A must have nine wicks left; production packs of 50 or 100 usually do. And the seven unused wicks of pack B stay sealed and labelled with the purchase date, because if the pack arm turns out to explain the gap, those are your evidence.
The optional wax arm adds three Dark Vanilla candles: three more wicks from pack A, 48 g more oil (two 100 g bottles, ₹1,580.00, cover all twelve Dark Vanilla candles with 8 g left) and 552 g from the second wax bag: ₹687.60 more in materials. Pour it only if a new wax bag is among the things that changed.
The four cells and what each one rules in or out
| Cell | Oil | Wick | Jars | If it passes while the control fails… | Materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Control | Dark Vanilla | C2, pack A | lot A | — (it must reproduce the fault, or the kit has nothing to explain) | ₹687.60 |
| Oil arm | Eucalyptus Spearmint | C2, pack A | lot A | the oil is a factor: fragrance chemistry | ₹512.31 |
| Wick-pack arm | Dark Vanilla | C2, pack B | lot A | pack A is a factor: wick lot or storage | ₹687.60 |
| Jar arm | Dark Vanilla | C2, pack A | lot B | the jar lot is a factor: diameter, wall or base | ₹687.60 |
| Wax arm (optional) | Dark Vanilla | C2, pack A | lot A, second wax bag | the wax lot is a factor | ₹687.60 |
Read the oil arm carefully. If Eucalyptus Spearmint also tunnels in the suspect pack and jars, the oil is not the explanation: something in the setup has changed for every oil. If it passes while Dark Vanilla fails, the oil matters in this setup, but check the jar and pack arms before concluding it is the only factor: a wider jar can push a heavy oil over the edge that a light oil still clears. Vanillin-rich and dark gourmand oils are commonly linked to wanting more wick: a tendency the oil arm tests rather than assumes.
Manufacturing variation is not an arm of its own; it is read from the spread inside every cell. Three candles that agree mean the cell's result is about its parts. One of three failing means something varied between candles: a wick off centre, an air pocket, a draught on one side of the table. That is why every wick is held by its own centring device while the wax sets, and why a split cell is re-poured rather than interpreted. A draught test that separates room effects from wick effects is the ceiling-fan post; if a wick leans in the set candle, centring comes before any purchase (the leaning-wick post).
Running it: one pour, one bag, one room
Twelve candles in matched sessions is a lot of burning. If you are short of time, the cells can be screened at burn 3 and only the deciding cells (the control and whichever arm differed) taken to full life. Separating a three-arm attribution for soot rather than tunnelling, so a label or load problem doesn't trigger a wick purchase, is the soot-attribution post.
Which variable explains the gap, and what to buy next
| Pattern | Explains the gap | Buy next | Don't buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control fails; oil arm passes; wick and jar arms fail | Fragrance chemistry | A ladder for Dark Vanilla: Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00), three candles to full life; or a lower load inside the page's 6–10% | A bigger wick for the other oils |
| Control fails; wick-pack arm passes | The wick pack | Nothing in a new size. Quarantine pack A, keep pack B's spares sealed, run incoming checks; tell us | Cotton Braided "to be safe" |
| Control fails; jar arm passes | The jar lot | Measure every new lot; re-bracket the wick for the new jar only if you keep it (the 5 mm-wider post) | A range-wide wick change for one delivery |
| Control fails; all arms fail, including the light oil | Something common: wax bag, room or process | The optional wax arm; a draught and centring check | Anything until the common cause is found |
| Candles within cells disagree | Manufacturing variation | Nothing: fix centring, pour temperature, cure and draughts, then re-pour | Any wick |
| The control passes this time | The original failure was a one-off or a process fault | Nothing; keep retained candles and watch the next batch | Any wick |
| Two arms each pass (e.g. old jars and the light oil) | Interaction: a heavy oil in a wider jar | Choose: go back to the approved jar lot, or ladder Dark Vanilla in the new jar | A size change for oils that pass |
The last row is the most common real answer: the heavy oil and the wider jar together, neither alone. The kit's value is that it shows you the choice instead of making it for you. If you keep the wider jars, each oil's wick is a question again, which is the new-jar post; if you go back to the approved lot, nothing needs buying. And if the gap follows the wick pack, the measurements to record on any wick delivery are the incoming-QC post, and keeping retained wicks from each lot is the retained-wicks post.
For the oil-is-the-cause outcome, the purchase is small and bounded. Cotton Braided costs ₹2.56 more per candle than C2 and is ₹12.00 a wick in every pack, so the 10-pack covers the three-candle confirm with seven spare. The cluster's planning view, expect one or two wick builds across a range and buy for two, is the cluster hub.
Whatever the kit points to, production quantities come only after the full-life pass, by the series formula: candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), from the series hub. Worked example: if Dark Vanilla moves to Cotton Braided at 60 candles a month with a 5% allowance, that is 63 wicks a month, covered by a 50-pack and two 10-packs (₹840.00), at the same ₹12.00 a wick as the 10-pack. If the cause was the pack, the jar or the process, your existing C2 order simply continues; CSI does not publish lead times or stock depth, so confirm dispatch on WhatsApp before a big run.

Skip for attribution: Cotton Braided Wicks (₹120.00 for 10) until the oil arm points at the oil. Steel Wick Holder (₹250.00 for 5): a single-wick candle needs only the one-hole centring device. A second jar size or a new wax: each adds a variable the kit is designed to remove.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, fixtures, oils and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that a new oil alone needs no kit, that most outcomes of the kit end in no wick purchase, and that a centring fixture can be two pencils and a peg.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size; every size shown is in stock on that date (the Eco C1 10-pack, not used here, is out of stock).
