Buyer question · ₹5,000 start
₹5,000 is enough to launch a small, honest fragrance range, but not enough to buy everything that sounds good. This page spends it three ways, prices every bottle, and tells you which plan we would pick for a brand that has not sold a candle yet.
₹4,904.56
the recommended order: 1,160 g across 11 oils, 68.75 production candles at 16 g each plus four test candles · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What should I buy with ₹5,000 of fragrance oil? One lead scent at 500 g (British Rose, ₹1,593.00), six production scents at 100 g, and four 15 g testers for the next round. Total ₹4,904.56 for 1,160 g. The full list is in the recommended order.

How many candles does ₹5,000 of oil make? The recommended order pours 68.75 candles of 200 g at an 8% load (16 g each), plus four test candles from the testers. A focused three-scent plan pours 93.75, but with only three scents.

Should I buy many 15 g bottles or fewer big ones? 15 g is for choosing, not producing. It carries a median 23.1% per-gram premium over the same oil at 100 g. Spend most of the budget at 100 g and above, and keep 15 g for scents you have not tested yet.

Does ₹5,000 cover wax and jars too? Only for a small first batch. An all-in plan with five oils at 50 g, 3 kg of wax, wicks, 15 jars, a scale and a thermometer costs ₹4,898.80 and pours 15 candles. See the all-in version.
The short answer
Recommended: British Rose 500 g + six oils at 100 g + four 15 g testers = ₹4,904.56, 1,160 g, 68.75 production candles at 16 g.
Other plans: Wide: 15 testers + 7 × 100 g = ₹4,697.72. Focused: British Rose, Citrus Lemon and Jasmine at 500 g = ₹4,974.00, 93.75 candles.
Price breaks: The step that matters is 15 g → 100 g (median 23.1% premium on 15 g). Above 100 g most oils are flat per gram; British Rose is one that keeps getting cheaper. ₹10,000: breadth or bulk goes further.

Where ₹5,000 goes in the recommended launch order — one lead scent, six production scents, four testers Bar width = rupees. Total ₹4,904.56 for 1,160 g of oil · 68.75 production candles at 16 g each · ₹95.44 left over. ₹0 ₹5,000 British Rose 500 g₹1,593.00Roasted Coffee 100 g₹390.00Jasmine 100 g₹430.00Sandalwood 100 g₹502.68Lavender 100 g₹540.00Citrus Lemon 100 g₹300.00Dark Vanilla 100 g₹790.004 testers · 15 g₹358.88Unspent₹95.44 The 500 g lead scent is the one size step that saves money here: British Rose is ₹3.19/g at 500 g against ₹3.42/g at 100 g.
The bar is the recommended order at listed prices. The 500 g lead scent takes the largest single share because it is the scent most likely to repeat, and it is also one of the oils where the 500 g genuinely costs less per gram than the 100 g. The ₹95.44 left over is deliberate: it covers a price change or one more tester without breaking the budget.
Straight answer
I have ₹5,000 to buy fragrance oils for my new candle business — which fragrances and quantities should I start with?
Buy one lead scent at 500 g, six production scents at 100 g and four 15 g testers. At CSI's listed prices that is British Rose 500 g (₹1,593.00), then Roasted Coffee, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Lavender, Citrus Lemon and Dark Vanilla at 100 g, plus Blue Ocean, Apple Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Japanese Cherry Blossom at 15 g. Total ₹4,904.56, leaving ₹95.44 spare. It gives you 1,100 g of production oil, which pours 68.75 candles of 200 g at an 8% load, across seven scents that cover floral, gourmand, woody, herbal and citrus. The testers are your next round, not stock. Why this shape? The 15 g size costs a median 23.1% more per gram than the same oil at 100 g, so a budget spread across many testers pours very few candles. Above 100 g most oils are priced flat, so buying 1 kg of an unproven scent ties up money without saving any. The one 500 g in the plan earns its place because British Rose is cheaper per gram at 500 g (₹3.19) than at 100 g (₹3.42). Remember that ₹5,000 of oil is not ₹5,000 of candles: wax, wicks and jars come on top.
One line: most of the money at 100 g, one lead scent bigger, a few testers for next time — and nothing at 1 kg yet.
The recommended order at today's prices: British Rose 500 g (₹1,593.00), six oils at 100 g and four 15 g testers, ₹4,904.56 in total. Every line is in stock on the pull date. If one sells out before you order, send us the list on WhatsApp and we will suggest the nearest swap.

Three ways to spend ₹5,000

A first fragrance budget has two jobs. It has to find out what your customers like, and it has to pour enough candles to find out. Most first orders do one job and forget the other.

There are three honest shapes for a ₹5,000 fragrance order. Wide spends heavily on 15 g testers so you can smell many scents in your own wax. Focused puts everything into three oils at 500 g and pours the most candles. Balanced sits between them: one lead scent bought bigger, a range of six at 100 g and a handful of testers for the next round. Each plan below is priced from CSI's live listings and totals under ₹5,000.

Oil only · 200 g candle at 8% (16 g) · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Three ₹5,000 fragrance orders compared
Plan Oils Oil bought Total Average ₹/g Candles Best for
A · Wide: 15 testers + 7 × 100 g 22 925 g ₹4,697.72 ₹5.08 43.75 + 15 tests Choosing, not selling
B · Balanced (recommended) 11 1,160 g ₹4,904.56 ₹4.23 68.75 + 4 tests A launch with a small range
C · Focused: 3 × 500 g 3 1,500 g ₹4,974.00 ₹3.32 93.75 A proven, narrow range

Read the average price per gram column first. The wide plan pays ₹5.08 a gram on average because fifteen of its bottles are 15 g testers. The focused plan pays ₹3.32 because it buys three low-cost oils at 500 g, where all three are genuinely cheaper per gram than at 100 g. The balanced plan lands at ₹4.23. That is not the cheapest gram on the page, and it does not need to be. It buys seven sellable scents instead of three, and it pours 68.75 candles instead of 43.75.

Plan A · Wide — for choosing, not selling

Plan A in full
Fifteen testers and seven production oils · ₹4,697.72
Line Oils Cost
15 testers at 15 g Eucalyptus Spearmint, Peach Melon Berry, Roasted Coconut, Apple Cinnamon, Blue Ocean, Cucumber Green Tea, Mango Coconut, Woody Oud, Fallen Leaves, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Autumn, Spicy Raspberry, Saffron Cedarwood, Bergamot Amber, Chocolate Fudge ₹1,402.84
7 production oils at 100 g Lavender, British Rose, Citrus Lemon, Roasted Coffee, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Dark Vanilla ₹3,294.88
Total 925 g of oil ₹4,697.72

This plan makes sense if you have no idea yet what your brand smells like. Fifteen testers give fifteen test candles, and the seven 100 g bottles give 43.75 sellable candles in seven safe profiles. The problem is that the testers take ₹1,402.84 and produce nothing you can sell. For a structured version of this approach with a proper burn protocol, read testing 20 fragrances before launch. Most new brands are better off testing fewer scents properly than more scents quickly.

Plan C · Focused — for a range you already know

British Rose, Citrus Lemon and Jasmine at 500 g each come to ₹4,974.00 for 1.5 kg of oil, enough for 93.75 candles. All three are value oils: ₹3.19, ₹2.84 and ₹3.92 a gram at 500 g. This is the plan for someone who has already tested and sold, perhaps from a hobby stage, and knows their customers want these three profiles. For a brand with no sales history it is a bet on three scents, and a three-scent shelf is thin for gifting or markets.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We could tell you to put the whole ₹5,000 into two 1 kg bottles and call it bulk buying. On our own prices, that rarely saves money: for most oils, 1 kg costs within 1% per gram of the 100 g. What it does is lock ₹5,000 into two scents before you know if anyone wants them. For a first order, buy breadth at 100 g and let sales tell you which scent earns the kilo.

The recommended order, line by line

The balanced plan is built around one question: which scents will a new Indian candle customer recognise and buy again? It covers a rose, a jasmine, a sandalwood, a coffee, a vanilla, a lavender and a lemon. That spread works for gifting, home fragrance and festive tables without anything too niche. The lead scent is British Rose, chosen because it is low-cost and cheaper per gram at 500 g. The testers are four more profiles you can try in your own wax before the second order.

Recommended ₹5,000 order · 16 g of oil per 200 g candle · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
The balanced plan · ₹4,904.56
Oil Size Price ₹/g Candles at 16 g Oil per candle
British Rose 500 g ₹1,593.00 ₹3.19 31.25 ₹50.98
Roasted Coffee 100 g ₹390.00 ₹3.90 6.25 ₹62.40
Jasmine 100 g ₹430.00 ₹4.30 6.25 ₹68.80
Sandalwood 100 g ₹502.68 ₹5.03 6.25 ₹80.43
Lavender 100 g ₹540.00 ₹5.40 6.25 ₹86.40
Citrus Lemon 100 g ₹300.00 ₹3.00 6.25 ₹48.00
Dark Vanilla 100 g ₹790.00 ₹7.90 6.25 ₹126.40
Blue Ocean (tester) 15 g ₹93.22 ₹6.21 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots —
Apple Cinnamon (tester) 15 g ₹93.22 ₹6.21 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots —
Eucalyptus Spearmint (tester) 15 g ₹68.44 ₹4.56 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots —
Japanese Cherry Blossom (tester) 15 g ₹104.00 ₹6.93 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots —
Total 1,160 g ₹4,904.56 ₹4.23 avg 68.75 production

Three numbers are worth noting. First, the oil cost per candle runs from ₹48.00 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹126.40 (Dark Vanilla). That spread matters more than any bottle price when you set selling prices. Second, the four testers cost ₹358.88 together, less than one 100 g of Dark Vanilla, and they decide your second order. Third, ₹95.44 stays unspent. Keep it. Prices and stock move, and a budget planned to the last rupee breaks the first time one size is out.

Why British Rose is the one bought bigger
Five 100 g bottles of British Rose would cost ₹1,711.00. One 500 g costs ₹1,593.00, saving ₹118.00 on the same 500 g of oil. Most oils do not behave like this; Lavender, for example, is ₹5.40/g at 100 g and ₹5.24/g at 500 g. When you choose a lead scent to buy bigger, pick one where the bigger size actually costs less per gram, or buy it at 100 g and reorder.

Swapping is easy, and you should swap to fit your brand. Keep the shape: one lead at 500 g, around six at 100 g, three or four testers. If you want a more Indian floral range, replace Lavender with Raat Ki Rani (₹700.00 for 100 g). For a warmer range, replace Citrus Lemon with Cinnamon Vanilla (₹483.80). Each swap moves the total by the price difference, so recheck it stays under ₹5,000. The best 5 fragrance oils to start a candle business and which fragrance oils to buy first go deeper on the scent choice itself.

How many candles it pours

A fragrance budget is really a candle budget. Count the candles before you count the bottles.

At the default working load of 8% in a 200 g candle, each candle takes 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. The recommended order has 1,100 g of production oil, so it pours 68.75 candles. The testers are kept apart: each 15 g scents one 187.5 g candle at 8%, or three 50 g test pots at 8% with 3 g spare. Change the load and the yield changes with it.

Candles from the recommended order at three loads · 200 g candle
Load sensitivity: the same oil, different candle counts
Load Oil per candle Candles from all production oil From the 500 g lead From each 100 g
6% 12 g 91.67 41.67 8.33
8% 16 g 68.75 31.25 6.25
10% 20 g 55.00 25.00 5.00

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load and CSI 464 up to 10%; those are the wax maker's stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Starting at 8% is sensible. Some oils will throw well at 6% in your wax, which stretches the budget by a third. Others will need 10%. Test before you decide, and do not push load to cover a wick that is too small. How much fragrance oil for 100 candles shows the quantity maths for a bigger first run.

The mistake that looks like a bargain. Spending ₹5,000 entirely on 15 g testers buys about 48 of them at the median ₹106.20 each, roughly 720 g of oil. That is 45 candles at 16 g, split across 48 scents, with no scent deep enough to reorder from. Worse, you have paid the tester premium on every gram. Testers are a research cost. Keep them to a small, deliberate share of a first order.
The CSI principle
Buy breadth at 100 g, depth only where the price or the sales justify it.
A first order should give you enough scents to learn from and enough of each to sell. 100 g does both: it is the first size where most oils reach their lowest listed per-gram rate, and it pours six candles, enough to see whether a scent sells.

If ₹5,000 must cover everything

Many first budgets are not oil-only. If ₹5,000 must also pay for wax, wicks, jars and the two tools you cannot skip, the plan shrinks to a first batch. Here is a fully priced version: five scents at 50 g, three candles each, fifteen 200 g candles in total. The fixed material cost of each candle before oil is ₹186.92 with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar.

Weighing Scale + Pen Thermometer 1 each ₹708.00 Bought once
Total ₹4,898.80 ₹101.20 left

This is a starter run, not a stock-up. It proves your process, gives you fifteen candles to sell or sample, and leaves ₹101.20 for labels or a second wax order. The 50 g size is the right choice here because it avoids the 15 g premium. For many oils the 50 g is already at the 100 g rate (Lavender is ₹5.40/g at both), though value oils such as British Rose still get cheaper at 100 g (₹4.25 against ₹3.42), which is why the production plan above uses 100 g. The wax line is the one to watch: 3 kg is 240 g more than fifteen candles need, which covers pour loss and a test burn. Costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST.

The kits are an alternative, with one caveat
CSI also lists complete kits, such as the Candle Making Kit for Beginners at ₹4,130.00. Their fragrance contents are not published in our data, so we cannot say which oils or how much they include. If you are considering one, ask on WhatsApp what is inside before comparing it with the list above.
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 45 days from today. If your ₹5,000 is meant to catch the festive season, order this week so you have time to test, pour and cure. We can check your list against stock and suggest swaps on WhatsApp.

What the second order looks like

The first order is a question. The second order is the answer. Once the first 60 or so candles have sold, you will know which scents moved, which were complimented and which sat on the shelf. That is when the budget should shift.

1
Rank the seven production scents by sell-throughCount how many candles of each scent sold in the first four weeks. Do not rely on compliments; rely on sales and repeat buyers.
2
Move the top two up a sizeIf Roasted Coffee sold out first, its 500 g costs ₹1,890.00 (₹3.78/g) against ₹390.00 for 100 g (₹3.90/g). Check whether the bigger size actually saves money for your winner. For many oils it does not, and two 100 g bottles are just as cheap.
3
Drop the bottom scentOne scent will almost always lag. Do not reorder it. Replace it with the best-performing tester from the first order.
4
Promote one tester to 100 gIf Japanese Cherry Blossom tested well, its 100 g is ₹500.00. That keeps your range at seven with one fresh scent.
5
Set a reorder point before you run outReorder a scent when its remaining oil covers about two weeks of sales. Setting reorder levels and buying for a 10-fragrance launch explain how to set that point.
6
Ask for a combined quote once you pass a few kilosWhen your monthly oil use reaches several kilos, message CSI on WhatsApp with your list. No discount figure is published, so ask rather than assume. Negotiating versus bigger packs at 5–10 kg a month covers that stage.

Here are the three oils that do the most work in the recommended order, with every size priced so you can plan the step up.

British Rose Fragrance Oil
The lead scent in the plan and one of the lowest-cost oils in the collection. It is also one of the 24 oils where the 1 kg is at least 5% cheaper per gram than the 100 g. At the 500 g rate, 16 g of oil costs ₹50.98 per candle.

Dark Vanilla Fragrance Oil
The one premium oil in the plan, at ₹7.90 a gram. It costs ₹126.40 per candle against ₹48.00 for Citrus Lemon, so price its candle accordingly. A vanilla gives a first range a warm anchor that gift buyers recognise.
Pack Price Per gram Candles at 16 g

Budget a second ₹5,000 for materials if your first was oil only. 1,100 g of oil at 8% needs 12.65 kg of wax for 68.75 candles: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo and ₹2,995.00 for 5 kg. Add Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (₹295.00 for 50, ₹590.00 for 100) and White Matte Glass Jars at ₹354.00 for 5. The Candle Wax and Containers collections list the alternatives.

Where ₹5,000 usually goes wrong

Most first budgets fail in one of four ways. The first is buying on name alone: ordering the dearest inspired-by oils because they sound premium, then discovering a 50 g of Club De Nuit Intense Inspired costs ₹1,203.00, which is ₹384.96 of oil in every candle. Premium oils belong in a premium range, costed first. Fragrance oils for a premium candle brand explains how to price for them.

The second is buying one kilo of a single scent. It feels professional, but at listed prices it rarely saves money, and it leaves you with a one-scent shelf. The third is forgetting the non-oil costs; the per-candle base of wax, wick and jar in our example is ₹186.92, which is more than the fragrance in most of these candles. The fourth is not keeping records. Write down the oil, the load, the wax and the wick for every test candle, or the second order becomes guesswork.

₹5,000 of oil buys about 70 candles and one good lesson. Buy it so the lesson is which scent sells, not which size was a mistake.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The easy advice for us would be to steer a ₹5,000 budget into a couple of kilo bottles. Our own listed prices show that rarely saves money on an unproven scent, so this page recommends 100 g breadth and names the one oil in the plan where buying bigger is genuinely cheaper.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every line in every plan was in stock on the pull date. Totals, per-gram figures and candle counts are plain arithmetic on those prices and are shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 200 g candle, the 8% load and the scent choices are working assumptions for planning, not a recipe or a sales forecast. Your wax, jar, load and customers decide your real figures. For a check of your own list, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What fragrance oils should I buy first for a candle business with a small budget?
A spread of recognisable profiles at 100 g: a rose, a jasmine, a sandalwood, a coffee, a vanilla, a lavender and a citrus. At CSI that set, with British Rose at 500 g and four 15 g testers, costs ₹4,904.56. Swap scents to suit your brand but keep the shape.
How much fragrance oil do I need to start a candle business?
Enough of each scent to pour and sell a first batch. 100 g pours 6.25 candles of 200 g at 8%. Seven scents at around 100 g each, plus a larger lead scent, gives about 69 candles, enough to learn which scents sell.
Is ₹5,000 enough to start a candle business?
For the fragrance, yes. For everything, only for a first batch: an all-in plan with five oils, wax, wicks, 15 jars and two tools costs ₹4,898.80 and pours 15 candles. Labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra.
Should I buy 15 g or 100 g fragrance oil?
15 g to test a scent you have never used; 100 g to produce. The 15 g carries a median 23.1% per-gram premium over the same oil at 100 g. For Lavender that is ₹7.00 a gram against ₹5.40.
How many candles can I make with 100 g of fragrance oil?
6.25 candles of 200 g at an 8% load (16 g each), 8.33 at 6% (12 g each) and 5 at 10% (20 g each). Smaller candles stretch it further: a 100 g candle at 8% uses 8 g, so 100 g of oil scents 12.5 of them.
