Which Fragrances to Buy · Hub
Starting a candle business, the fragrance question arrives before any other: which oils, and how many? This page gives you a method rather than a list. Three filters (scent family, cost per candle, stock depth) cut CSI's 93 listed oils to a first order you can defend, and price it.
₹8,948.64
8 testers in 15 g, 5 winners in 100 g, and the wax, wicks and jars to pour 30 candles · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance oils should I buy first? One or two from each of four or five scent families, all in one price tier, all with stock at every size. On CSI's catalogue that points to oils like Lavender, Jasmine, Roasted Coffee, Woody Oud and Cucumber Green Tea. Test in 15 g first; an eight-oil test set costs ₹769.70.

How many fragrances should a new candle business start with? Test six to eight and launch with four or five. Fewer than four gives a customer no real choice; more than six splits a small budget into quantities too small to reorder from. The best 5 and best 10 lists show both ends.

How do I know which fragrances will sell? You do not know in advance, and no one can promise it. CSI publishes no sales figures. The one public popularity signal is the collection's best-selling sort order; use it to shortlist, then let your own test burns and first customers decide. See Which Candle Fragrances Sell Best in India?.

How much should I spend on fragrance to start? In the worked example, ₹769.70 on eight 15 g testers and ₹2,165.94 on five 100 g production bottles. With wax, wicks and jars for 30 candles, the whole first order is ₹8,948.64. Details in the first order.
The short answer
Filter 1 · Family: Cover four or five scent families (floral, fresh/herbal, gourmand, woody, citrus or fruity) with one or two oils each, so each candle in the range has a job.
Filter 2 · Tier: Keep every launch oil in one price band. At 100 g, 16 g of oil in a 200 g candle costs from ₹48.00 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹143.36 (Gilli Mitti) inside the top 15 of the best-selling sort.
Filter 3 · Stock depth: Prefer oils in stock at 15 g, 100 g and 1 kg on the day you buy, so the scent you test is the scent you can scale. 47 of 93 oils had all five sizes in stock on 24 September 2026.

The first two filters are facts; the last two are your decisions.
The first three boxes are counts from the live catalogue on 24 September 2026. The last two are where your judgement comes in: which families your customer wants, and which price tier your selling price can carry. The funnel is a way of ordering those decisions, not a ranking of oils.
Straight answer
Which fragrance oils should I buy to start a candle business?
Buy by method, not by mood. Run every candidate through three filters. First, scent family: a starting range needs four or five families — floral, fresh or herbal, gourmand, woody, and citrus or fruity — with one or two oils in each, so every candle has a clear job. Second, price tier: convert each oil to the cost of fragrance inside one candle. A 200 g candle at an 8% load holds 16 g, which at 100 g prices runs from ₹48.00 for Citrus Lemon to ₹143.36 for Gilli Mitti within the top 15 of CSI's best-selling sort. Keep a launch range inside one band so your prices make sense on one shelf. Third, stock depth: prefer oils in stock at 15 g, 100 g and 1 kg, so a scent that passes testing can be scaled without a gap. Then test six to eight oils in 15 g (₹769.70 in our example), launch four or five from 100 g, and let your own sales decide what earns a kilo. CSI publishes no sales data, so treat the best-selling sort as a shortlist, not a forecast.
One line: four or five families, one price tier, stock at every size — then test before you buy big.
A balanced first test set, one or two oils per family, all in stock at every size on the pull date: Lavender, British Rose, Jasmine, Roasted Coffee, Woody Oud, Citrus Lemon, Cucumber Green Tea and Cinnamon Vanilla in 15 g. That is ₹769.70 for 120 g of oil — one 200 g test candle per scent at 7.5%, or three 50 g test pots each at 8%.

The three filters

A beginner picks the fragrances they like. A business picks the fragrances it can sell, cost and reorder. Those are three separate questions.

CSI's Fragrance Oils collection lists 93 oils. Eighty-six have at least one size in stock on the pull date. Browsing that many scents one product page at a time is how new makers end up with twelve bottles, three of which smell alike, two of which cost three times the rest, and one of which is out of stock when the first repeat order arrives. Asking each candidate three questions in a fixed order stops that.

The selection framework · apply in this order
Three questions every candidate oil has to pass
Filter The question Working rule for a first range Why it comes in this position
1 · Scent family What job does this candle do in the range? 4–5 families, 1–2 oils each Stops duplicates before you spend money
2 · Price tier What does its fragrance cost inside one candle? Every launch oil in one band Stops one oil breaking your price list
3 · Stock depth Can I buy it at 15 g, 100 g and 1 kg today? Prefer all three in stock Stops a proven scent stalling at reorder

The order matters. Family comes first because it is the customer's question: they walk up to a shelf and look for a floral, or something fresh, or something warm. Price tier comes second because it is your margin's question, and it is easier to swap a rose for a cheaper rose than to rebuild a range. Stock depth comes last because it is a practical check on the finalists, not a reason to choose a scent you do not want.

What the framework does not include is a sales forecast. CSI publishes no unit sales, and this page does not invent any. The only public popularity signal is the collection's best-selling sort order, which is used below as a shortlist. Which candle fragrances sell best in India explains how far that signal goes and where reasoning has to take over.

Filter 1: scent family

A scent family is a group of fragrances a customer would describe the same way: floral, fresh, sweet, woody, fruity. Two roses in a five-candle range compete with each other. A rose, a lavender, a coffee, an oud and a lemon do not; each answers a different request. The table maps CSI oils from the top of the best-selling sort to families and to the occasions buyers tend to shop them for. The occasions are reasoning about how candles are bought, not data.

Families with in-stock examples from CSI's catalogue
One or two per family is enough to open
Family Examples (all five sizes in stock) Where the candle tends to go
Floral British Rose, Jasmine Gifting, weddings, festive
Fresh / herbal Lavender, Cucumber Green Tea Everyday, bedroom, bathroom, spa
Gourmand Roasted Coffee, Cinnamon Vanilla Kitchen, cafés, winter gifting
Woody / resin Woody Oud, Gilli Mitti Festive, men's gifting, pooja corners
Citrus Citrus Lemon Summer, kitchens, value candles

Five families is a comfortable maximum for a first range; four works if one of them is broad. Fruity and citrus can share a slot at first. Spice and seasonal oils — Apple Cinnamon, Pumpkin Spice, Fallen Leaves — are better added for a season than launched as permanent lines. Inspired-by perfume oils are a family of their own with their own price tier, covered in fragrance oils for a luxury candle collection.

Smell families, not bottles
When your testers arrive, do not sniff them one after another at the bottle. Pour them, cure them, and burn two families side by side. A floral and a woody that seemed distinct in the bottle can read as similar in a warm room, and a fresh that seemed faint cold can fill a space hot. The family decision is made in the burn, not the unboxing.

Filter 2: price tier per candle

The customer sees a price tag. You see the fragrance cost behind it. Choose oils whose cost fits the tag you want to print.

Convert every candidate to the fragrance cost inside one candle. Throughout this cluster the reference is a 200 g container candle at 8%: 16 g of oil and 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. With an Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80, the base before fragrance is ₹186.92. For a starting business the production size is the 100 g, so price the oil there. Here are five bands, using the per-gram price at the 1 kg listing as the reference, as Candle Fragrance Oil Price in India does:

Price bands · per-gram reference at 1 kg · 16 g of oil per 200 g candle
Five tiers, and what each puts into one candle
Tier ₹ per gram Oil per candle Example (100 g price → oil per candle) Suits
Value Under ₹3.50 Under ₹56.00 Citrus Lemon ₹300.00 → ₹48.00 Entry candles, bulk orders
Core ₹3.50–₹5.00 ₹56.00–₹80.00 Jasmine ₹430.00 → ₹68.80 Most first ranges
Mid ₹5.00–₹6.50 ₹80.00–₹104.00 Lavender ₹540.00 → ₹86.40 Gift-led ranges
Premium ₹6.50–₹9.00 ₹104.00–₹144.00 Dark Vanilla ₹790.00 → ₹126.40 Premium brands (1548)
Luxury Over ₹9.00 Over ₹144.00 Club De Nuit Intense Inspired ₹2,406.00 → ₹384.96 Luxury lines (1549)

Material cost for the same candle is the base plus the oil: ₹234.92 with Citrus Lemon, ₹255.72 with Jasmine, ₹273.32 with Lavender, ₹313.32 with Dark Vanilla and ₹571.88 with the Club De Nuit Intense Inspired oil. Those figures exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. The spread between the first and the last is ₹336.96 a candle, and it comes almost entirely from the fragrance.

Why one band per launch range? Because a customer compares candles on one shelf. If four of your candles cost ₹80 of oil and the fifth costs ₹190, you either price the fifth far above the others and explain why, or you price it with the rest and lose money on every one you sell. Neither is a problem once a brand is established and can run a separate premium line. For a first range, keep them together. A small brand usually lives in Value and Core (Best Fragrance Oils for a Small Candle Brand); a premium brand builds in the Premium band.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The oils that earn us the most per order are the premium and inspired-by oils. For a first range, most makers should not start there. A Core-band oil like Jasmine puts ₹68.80 of fragrance into a candle; the Club De Nuit Intense Inspired oil puts ₹384.96 in. Start where a pricing mistake is cheap, prove you can sell, and move up a band when your customers ask for it.

Filter 3: stock depth

Stock depth is the practical question most first-time buyers skip: if this scent works, can I buy more of it at the size I will need next? On the 24 September 2026 pull, 47 of the 93 oils were in stock at all five sizes (15 g, 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg), and 73 were in stock at 1 kg. Every oil in the top 18 of the best-selling sort had all five sizes in stock. Further down the list, gaps appear.

Stock status on 24 September 2026 · examples of gaps
What a gap looks like in practice
Oil Sort position In stock Missing What it means for a starter
Chocolate Fudge 19 15 g · 50 g · 500 g · 1 kg 100 g Test in 15 g, but plan to produce from 50 g or 500 g
Vetiver 21 15 g · 50 g · 100 g · 500 g 1 kg Fine to launch; scale in 500 g until the kilo returns
Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired) 40 50 g · 100 g · 500 g · 1 kg No 15 g listed Your smallest test is 50 g
Moca Coffee 54 50 g · 100 g 15 g, 500 g, 1 kg Test and small runs only for now
Rajnigandha (Tuberose) 27 none All sizes Not buyable on the pull date; ask for a restock date

A gap is not a reason to reject an oil you love. It is a reason to know your plan before your customers do. If the 1 kg is out, the 500 g is the scaling size. If only 50 g and 100 g are listed, small runs are fine and a large festive order needs a WhatsApp conversation first. Stock changes daily, so re-check the product page on the day you order. Which Candle Fragrance Oils Should I Always Keep in Stock? turns stock depth into a rule for which oils to hold as core stock.

The gap that shows up at the worst time. A maker tests twelve oils, launches with the two that are hardest to source, and discovers the problem at the first bulk enquiry. Run the stock check on your finalists before you print labels, not after. It takes five minutes per oil on the product page, and it is free.

The filters applied to the top 15

The best-selling sort is a sensible place to start looking. It is not a place to stop thinking.

Here are the first 15 oils in the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort on the pull date, with each filter filled in. The per-candle figure uses the 100 g price, because that is the size a starting business produces from. The sort order tells you what CSI's own customers have been choosing; it does not tell you what your customers will choose, and CSI publishes no units behind it.

Top 15 of the best-selling sort · 100 g prices · 16 g per 200 g candle
The shortlist, filtered

6 Sandalwood Woody / resin ₹5.03 ₹80.43 Mid All five
7 Citrus Lemon Citrus ₹3.00 ₹48.00 Value All five
8 Japanese Cherry Blossom Floral ₹5.00 ₹80.00 Core All five
9 Apple Cinnamon Spice / seasonal ₹4.74 ₹75.90 Core All five
10 Jasmine Floral ₹4.30 ₹68.80 Core All five
11 Bergamot Amber Citrus ₹5.60 ₹89.60 Mid All five
12 Woody Oud Woody / resin ₹4.53 ₹72.50 Core All five
13 Fresh Strawberries Fruity ₹3.78 ₹60.42 Core All five
14 Eucalyptus Spearmint Fresh / herbal ₹3.54 ₹56.64 Value All five
15 Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) Woody / resin ₹8.96 ₹143.36 Premium All five

Three things stand out. Every family is represented in the top 15, so a balanced range can be built entirely from the head of the sort. Ten of the 15 sit in the Value and Core tiers, and apart from the two Premium oils, Dark Vanilla and Gilli Mitti, oil per candle runs from ₹48.00 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹89.60 (Bergamot Amber). And stock depth is not a constraint here: all 15 were in stock at every size. The filters that actually cut this list are family and tier.

Applying them for a Core-tier starting range: take one floral (British Rose or Jasmine), one fresh (Lavender, Blue Ocean, Eucalyptus Spearmint or Cucumber Green Tea), one gourmand (Roasted Coffee), one woody (Woody Oud or Sandalwood) and one citrus or fruit (Citrus Lemon or Fresh Strawberries). Hold Dark Vanilla and Gilli Mitti back for a later premium line. That leaves a test set of six to eight, which is what the order below prices.

Jasmine Fragrance Oil
A floral most Indian buyers recognise at once, tenth in the best-selling sort, in stock at every size. It is also one of the 24 oils where buying bigger genuinely saves: the 1 kg is 8.8% cheaper per gram than the 100 g. At 100 g it puts ₹68.80 of oil into a 200 g candle.

The woody slot at a Core price. Twelfth in the sort, and a way to put an oud note in a first range without Premium-band costs. The step that matters is 15 g to 100 g: ₹6.21 a gram against ₹4.53. From 100 g up, the price per gram does not change.

Cucumber Green Tea Fragrance Oil
The fresh slot for a maker watching cost. At ₹3.53 a gram at 100 g, it puts ₹56.45 of oil into a candle, and the 1 kg is 5.7% cheaper per gram than the 100 g. It sits outside the top 15 of the sort (position 38), which is a reminder that the sort is a shortlist, not a fence.

Where Lavender fits
Lavender is first in the best-selling sort and most first ranges should test it. It sits in the Mid tier at ₹86.40 a candle from 100 g, higher than most of the Core oils around it. That is fine for one slot. If it passes your burn test, price the whole range with it in mind, or put it in a slightly larger jar with a slightly higher price.

The first order, priced

Here is the method turned into a real order. Stage one tests eight oils in 15 g. Stage two buys 100 g of the five that pass. We have assumed the five below pass; yours will differ, and that is the point of testing. Wax, wicks and jars are sized for six 200 g candles per scent, the most a 100 g bottle scents at 16 g each (96 g used, 4 g spare).

The 15 g carries a premium per gram — a median of 23.1% over the same oil's 100 g across the catalogue — which is the price of not committing. Pay it for testing and never for production. Decide your families before you open the collectionWrite down four or five families and one sentence each on where that candle goes: bedroom, kitchen, gift, festive. This is your brief to yourself, and it stops the order growing to twelve bottles.
2
Set a fragrance ceiling per candleChoose a band. For most first ranges that is Core: ₹56.00 to ₹80.00 of oil in a 200 g candle. One Mid-tier oil such as Lavender is fine if you price for it.
3
Shortlist from the best-selling sort, then check stockStart at the top of CSI's best-selling sort, pick two candidates per family inside your band, and confirm each is in stock at 15 g, 100 g and 1 kg on the product page.
4
Test six to eight in 15 gOur set costs ₹769.70. Pour, cure for at least a week, and burn side by side. Drop any oil that underperforms or duplicates another family in the burn.
5
Buy the winners in 100 gFive 100 g bottles cost ₹2,165.94 here and scent 30 candles. This is where the 15 g premium disappears, and for most oils 100 g already costs the same per gram as 1 kg.
6
Let sales pick the first kiloOnly move a scent to 1 kg when you are reordering it regularly. For the few oils with a real kilo saving, such as Jasmine at 8.8%, the kilo also lowers your cost. For most, it buys stock security rather than a better rate.

Where first orders go wrong

Most first-order mistakes come from skipping one filter. Buying twelve scents skips the family filter; the range has no shape and the money is spread too thin to reorder anything. Building the range around one expensive favourite skips the tier filter; the favourite either sets an awkward price or quietly loses money. Launching an oil that is short at the next size up skips the stock filter; the first repeat order waits on a restock.

The other common error is buying production quantities before testing. Every oil behaves differently in your wax, jar and wick, and a scent that is strong in the bottle can be quiet in the candle. Fifteen grams is enough to make that call. How to choose your first fragrance oil collection walks through the whole process from customer to reorder, and I Have ₹5,000 to Buy Fragrance Oils for My New Candle Business — Which Fragrances and Quantities Should I Start With? prices a complete start on a fixed budget.

The CSI principle
Choose the range, then the oils.
A candle range is a set of answers to what customers ask for. Decide those answers — families, price band, sizes you will need — and the oils almost choose themselves. Start from the oils and you end up with a collection of favourites that do not fit together.

Fixed-length lists are useful once you have the method. The best 5 fragrance oils to start a candle business is the tightest start; the best 10 and the best 20 show how a range grows. If your brand is premium from day one, go to Best Fragrance Oils for a Premium Candle Brand.

Four families, one price tier, stock at every size. Everything else is taste, and taste is what the test candles are for.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A page like this could simply list our most expensive oils as the best ones. It does not. The method on this page tends to steer a new business towards the Value and Core tiers, because that is where a first range is cheapest to get right.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026 across the 93 products in the Fragrance Oils collection. Stock status is as listed on that date. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. "Best-selling" refers only to the collection's best-selling sort order on the pull date; CSI publishes no unit sales and none are implied. Per-gram and per-candle figures are plain arithmetic on the listed prices.

The family groupings, the five price bands and the six-to-eight test set are working rules for comparison, not laws. Your customers, wax and jar decide your real range. For shortlist help, stock checks, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Which fragrance oils are best for starting a candle business in India?
Choose by family, price tier and stock depth rather than a single "best" oil. From the top of CSI's best-selling sort, a balanced Core-tier start could be Jasmine, Lavender, Roasted Coffee, Woody Oud and Cucumber Green Tea, costing between ₹56.45 and ₹86.40 of oil per 200 g candle at 100 g prices.
How many fragrances should I start my candle business with?
Test six to eight and launch with four or five. That covers four or five scent families, keeps each purchase large enough to reorder from, and leaves budget for wax and jars. Best 5 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business is the five-oil version.
What are the most popular candle fragrance oils?
CSI publishes no sales figures. The collection's best-selling sort on 24 September 2026 was headed by Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood and Citrus Lemon. Use that as a shortlist and test in your own wax. Which Candle Fragrances Sell Best in India? explains the reasoning behind Indian preferences.
Should I buy 15 g or 100 g fragrance oil to start?
Both, in order. Use 15 g to test (it costs a median 23.1% more per gram than 100 g), and 100 g to produce. For most oils 100 g already costs the same per gram as 1 kg, so you get production pricing without production risk.
How much fragrance oil do I need for my first candles?
At 8% in a 200 g candle, 16 g per candle. A 15 g tester scents about one 200 g candle or three 50 g test pots; a 100 g bottle scents six 200 g candles with 4 g spare. How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for 100 Candles? scales that to 100 candles.
What if the fragrance I want is out of stock?
Check the product page for which sizes are missing — often only one is. If the 1 kg is out, scale in 500 g. If every size is out, as with Rajnigandha on the pull date, ask CSI on WhatsApp for a restock date before you build a range around it.
Filter, test, then buy
Four or five families. One price tier. Stock at every size. Test in 15 g, produce from 100 g.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Per-gram prices are pack price ÷ grams. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 / kg (₹110.22), one Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and one White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), a base of ₹186.92 before oil, unless a table states otherwise. They exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. "Best-selling" and sort positions refer only to the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort order as pulled on 24 September 2026; CSI publishes no unit sales, and none are implied. Stock status is as listed on the pull date. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. The worked order assumes 8 testers in 15 g (₹769.70), 5 production oils in 100 g (₹2,165.94), 30 candles needing 5.52 kg of wax, 30 wicks and 30 jars; the five 'passing' oils are an illustration, not a prediction. Price bands use the per-gram price at each oil's 1 kg listing. The 23.1% median 15 g premium and the 8.8% Jasmine 1 kg saving are from the same pull. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
