Which Fragrances to Buy · Best 20
Twenty scents is a catalogue, not a starter range. It needs a permanent core, a seasonal rotation and a buying pattern that does not leave twenty half-used bottles on a shelf. This list gives you all three from oils that were in stock at every size on the pull date.
₹35,547.02
opening oil stock: 12 permanent oils in 500 g and 8 seasonal oils in 100 g — enough for 425 candles at 16 g each · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What are the best 20 fragrance oils for a candle business? Twelve permanent: Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cucumber Green Tea, British Rose, Cinnamon Vanilla, Gardenia, Orchard Pear, Lemongrass and Lime, Ylang Ylang Flower, Palo Santo, White Royal Oud, Vanilla Bean and Neroli. Eight seasonal: Pumpkin Spice, Fallen Leaves, Spicy Raspberry, Citronella, Honeydew Melon, Mango Coconut, Raat Ki Rani and Saffron Cedarwood.

Why 12 permanent and 8 seasonal? Because twenty oils on permanent sale split your stock into twenty slow-moving bottles. Twelve permanent oils cover every family and tier all year; eight seasonal oils come in for their season and go out again. See the seasonal calendar.

Should I buy 500 g or 100 g for a 20-scent range? For the twelve permanent oils, 500 g. It costs ₹30,787.40 against ₹31,965.70 for the same grams in 100 g bottles, and for several oils it is genuinely cheaper per gram. For seasonal oils, 100 g, except where the 500 g is a real bargain — Citronella's 500 g costs less than two of its 100 g bottles.

How much does a 20-fragrance range cost to open? Twenty 15 g testers cost ₹2,152.50. Opening oil stock is ₹35,547.02. With wax, wicks and jars for the first 100 candles, the whole opening order is ₹56,750.52. Details in the opening order.
The short answer
Four tiers: Value (under ₹3.50/g at 1 kg), Core (₹3.50–₹5.00), Mid (₹5.00–₹6.50) and Premium (₹6.50–₹9.00): five oils in each. Average oil per 200 g candle at 1 kg prices: ₹80.38.
Permanent 12: Every family and every tier represented, so the core range stands on its own when no season is running.
Seasonal 8: Winter spice, monsoon Citronella, summer fruit, and Indian florals and woods for the festive and November–February wedding season.

Sorted by tier, then by cost. The Value five cost less than ₹56.00 of oil per candle at 1 kg, and the Premium five between ₹104.00 and ₹144.00. The average across all twenty is ₹80.38. Citronella sits at the bottom because its 1 kg carries the biggest per-gram saving in the whole collection.
Straight answer
What are the best 20 fragrance oils for a candle business?
Twenty oils work best as twelve permanent and eight seasonal. The permanent twelve — Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cucumber Green Tea, British Rose, Cinnamon Vanilla, Gardenia, Orchard Pear, Lemongrass and Lime, Ylang Ylang Flower, Palo Santo, White Royal Oud, Vanilla Bean and Neroli — cover every scent family across four price tiers, so the shelf is complete all year. The seasonal eight rotate with the Indian calendar: Pumpkin Spice, Fallen Leaves and Spicy Raspberry for winter, Citronella for the monsoon, Honeydew Melon and Mango Coconut for summer, and Raat Ki Rani and Saffron Cedarwood for Diwali and the November–February wedding season. All twenty were in stock at every size on 24 September 2026. At 1 kg prices they put between ₹46.26 and ₹129.65 of fragrance into a 200 g candle at 8%. Buy the permanent twelve in 500 g (₹30,787.40) and the seasonal eight in 100 g (₹4,759.62). This list is built for range balance; CSI publishes no sales figures, so test before you commit.
One line: twelve that stay, eight that rotate — and check the 500 g against the 100 g for every oil.
Test the whole catalogue first: all twenty oils list a 15 g size, and the full set costs ₹2,152.50 for 300 g of oil. That is one 200 g test candle per scent at 7.5%, and it is the cheapest insurance you will buy before committing to ₹35,547.02 of opening stock.

Twenty is a catalogue

Five scents is a range and ten is a range with lines. Twenty is a catalogue, and a catalogue needs a rota.

Makers usually reach twenty scents by accident: a new one every month, nothing ever dropped. The result is twenty open bottles, each moving slowly, and a customer faced with too many choices. Established brands manage the same number differently. A permanent core stays on sale all year and is bought in larger packs. A seasonal rotation comes in for a few months, sells, and goes. The twenty below are built that way from the start.

This list deliberately reaches beyond the top of the best-selling sort. The best 5 and the best 10 draw from the first sixteen positions. A catalogue needs depth that a starter range does not: a second citrus-herbal, a lighter white floral, a smoky wood, seasonal oils for each part of the Indian year. Twelve of the twenty come from outside the top sixteen. The sort remains CSI's only popularity signal, and it is not sales data.

What a 20-oil catalogue needs that a starter range does not
Starter range versus catalogue
Starter (5–10 oils) Catalogue (20 oils)
Structure One or two lines Permanent core + seasonal rotation
Tiers One, maybe two Four, Value to Premium
Main buying size 100 g 500 g for the core, 100 g for seasonal
Main risk Too little choice Too many slow-moving open bottles
Main decision Which oils Which oils stay, and which rotate
Twenty only works if you drop as well as add
Give every seasonal oil an end date when you add it. If a seasonal oil outsells a permanent one two seasons running, swap them. The catalogue stays at twenty; its contents move.

The twenty, by tier

Tiers use the per-gram price at each oil's 1 kg listing, the same bands as Candle Fragrance Oil Price in India. The per-candle columns show 16 g of oil in a 200 g candle at 8%, priced at 100 g and at 1 kg, so you can see what scaling each oil changes. "P" marks the permanent twelve, "S" the seasonal eight.

At 100 g prices the tiers average ₹72.05 (Value), ₹72.60 (Core), ₹95.07 (Mid) and ₹117.18 (Premium) of oil per candle. Citronella distorts the Value average at 100 g, because its 100 g is priced far above its bulk sizes; at 1 kg it is the cheapest oil on the list. Every tier holds at least one permanent and one seasonal oil, so each season can be offered at more than one price.

Material cost per candle is the oil plus a base of ₹186.92 for 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar. That runs from ₹233.17 (Citronella at 1 kg) to ₹316.52 (White Royal Oud at 100 g), and it excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. A catalogue this wide usually carries two or three selling prices; Best 10 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business covers how to split lines by cost.

The seasonal calendar

India's candle year does not follow the northern-hemisphere autumn. It follows Diwali, the wedding season, the heat and the rain.

The eight seasonal oils are placed against the Indian calendar by reasoning, not by sales data: spice and warm scents for the cooler months and gifting, bright fruit for the heat, Citronella for the monsoon when people sit outdoors in the evening, and Indian florals and woods for the festive and wedding months. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November; the wedding season runs roughly November to February.

Seasonal eight · when to bring each in and out

Seasonal oil Tier Season Buy by Oil per candle at 100 g
Pumpkin Spice Mid Winter (Nov–Jan) Mid-October ₹94.40
Fallen Leaves Core Autumn–winter (Oct–Jan) Late September ₹75.52
Spicy Raspberry Mid Winter and Christmas Late October ₹95.84
Citronella Value Monsoon and outdoor (Jun–Sep) Late May ₹122.72
Honeydew Melon Value Summer (Mar–Jun) Late February ₹69.67

Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Premium Festive and wedding season (Oct–Feb) Mid-September ₹112.00
Saffron Cedarwood Premium Diwali and wedding season (Oct–Feb) Mid-September ₹111.39

The "buy by" column allows a few weeks to test, pour and cure before the season starts. For Diwali 2026 that means the festive oils should already be in hand: Raat Ki Rani and Saffron Cedarwood for a festive run need to be poured by mid-October. Best Indian Fragrances for Diwali Candles and When Should Candle Businesses Order Fragrance Oils for Diwali Production? go deeper into the Diwali timing, and Best Fragrance Oils for Wedding Return-Gift Candles into wedding favours.

The season that arrives before the oil. The common failure with seasonal oils is ordering them when the season starts. By then the candles need to be on sale, not curing. Put the "buy by" dates in your calendar now, and if a date has passed for this year, run a smaller batch rather than skipping the season.

500 g or 100 g, oil by oil

For the permanent twelve, the opening question is whether to buy 500 g or five 100 g bottles. On CSI's listed prices the answer varies by oil, and for some the 500 g saves nothing. The table compares the two for each permanent oil.

Permanent twelve · 500 g versus 5 × 100 g · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Where the 500 g earns its place

Neroli ₹3,327.60 ₹3,327.60 ₹0.00 ₹6.66 ₹6.66
Total ₹30,787.40 ₹31,965.70 ₹1,178.30

Four oils gain nothing at 500 g. Palo Santo and Neroli cost exactly the same as five 100 g bottles, and the Gardenia and White Royal Oud 500 g packs cost ₹1.00 more. For those four, the 500 g is purely convenience and stock security. Lemongrass and Lime and Ylang Ylang Flower show the largest savings. Across the twelve, 500 g saves ₹1,178.30 over the same grams in 100 g bottles, which is worth having but is not a reason to overbuy a scent that is not selling.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Two of our listings reward the smaller buy or the middle size. Saffron Cedarwood's 500 g costs ₹5.17 a gram; its 1 kg costs ₹6.87. Two 500 g packs cost ₹5,168.40, which is ₹1,699.20 less than the ₹6,867.60 kilo. And Citronella's 500 g at ₹1,475.00 costs less than two of its own 100 g bottles (₹1,534.00). Read the ladder for each oil before you assume the kilo is the bulk buy.

For the seasonal eight, 100 g is the default: a season rarely justifies more until you have sold through one. Citronella is the exception worth taking — if you expect to need more than one 100 g bottle (about six candles) in the monsoon, the 500 g is already cheaper than a second 100 g bottle. Honeydew Melon and Mango Coconut are also noticeably cheaper per gram at 500 g than at 100 g, so they are the next seasonal oils to move up once a summer proves them.

The opening order

Here is the opening order for the twenty, after testing. The permanent twelve are bought in 500 g (375 candles' worth at 16 g each) and the seasonal eight in 100 g (50 candles' worth). Wax, wicks and jars cover the first 100 candles only; buy more as you pour.

1
Test all twenty in 15 g₹2,152.50 for the full set. Burn within tiers first, then across families.
2
Confirm the permanent twelveAny permanent oil that fails its burn test is replaced with another oil from the same family and tier, and tested again.
3
Buy the permanent twelve in 500 g₹30,787.40 for 6 kg of oil. Check each oil's ladder on the day: stock and prices change.
4
Buy the season you are entering, not the whole yearIn late September, that is Raat Ki Rani, Saffron Cedarwood and Fallen Leaves, with Pumpkin Spice and Spicy Raspberry following in October. Summer and monsoon oils can wait.
5
Keep the seasonal eight at 100 gUnless the ladder rewards more (Citronella, Saffron Cedarwood). A season that sells out tells you to buy bigger next year.

The CSI principle
A catalogue is a rota, not a pile.
Twenty scents are manageable when twelve are always there and eight take turns. They become a burden when all twenty are permanent and every bottle is half used. Decide which oils rotate before you buy them.
Read every oil's price ladder once. Some reward the kilo, some the 500 g, and some reward nothing but buying what you need.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page points out two of our own listings where the bigger pack is not the better buy — Saffron Cedarwood's 1 kg costs more per gram than its 500 g — and four where 500 g saves nothing over 100 g. That is what the listed prices say, so that is what the page says.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Stock status and sort positions are as listed on that date; CSI publishes no unit sales. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-gram, per-candle and saving figures are plain arithmetic on the listed prices.

The permanent and seasonal split, the seasonal calendar and the "buy by" dates are working assumptions built on reasoning about the Indian year, not sales data. For stock checks, a quote on the twenty, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best 20 candle fragrances for a candle business in India?
A balanced twenty from CSI's catalogue: twelve permanent (Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cucumber Green Tea, British Rose, Cinnamon Vanilla, Gardenia, Orchard Pear, Lemongrass and Lime, Ylang Ylang Flower, Palo Santo, White Royal Oud, Vanilla Bean, Neroli) and eight seasonal (Pumpkin Spice, Fallen Leaves, Spicy Raspberry, Citronella, Honeydew Melon, Mango Coconut, Raat Ki Rani, Saffron Cedarwood). Chosen for balance, not from sales data.
How many candle scents should an established brand carry?
Around twelve permanent scents plus a rotation for the seasons is a manageable shape. Beyond that, each extra permanent scent spreads your stock thinner. Which Candle Fragrance Oils Should I Always Keep in Stock? covers which oils to hold in depth.
Is 500 g fragrance oil cheaper than 100 g?
Sometimes. Across the permanent twelve here, 500 g saves ₹1,178.30 over the same grams in 100 g bottles, but Palo Santo, Neroli, Gardenia and White Royal Oud gain nothing at 500 g. Check each oil's ladder.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Per-gram prices are pack price ÷ grams. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 / kg (₹110.22), one Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and one White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), a base of ₹186.92 before oil, unless a table states otherwise. They exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. "Best-selling" and sort positions refer only to the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort order as pulled on 24 September 2026; CSI publishes no unit sales, and none are implied. Stock status is as listed on the pull date. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Tiers use the per-gram price at each oil's 1 kg listing: Value under ₹3.50, Core ₹3.50–₹5.00, Mid ₹5.00–₹6.50, Premium ₹6.50–₹9.00. The opening order assumes 12 × 500 g and 8 × 100 g of oil, and wax, wicks and jars for the first 100 candles (18.4 kg of wax bought as 19 kg). Seasons and "buy by" dates are reasoning, not sales data. 1 kg savings quoted (Citronella 62.3%, Honeydew Melon 22.0%, Mango Coconut 20.7%) are from the same pull. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
