Indian Woody Fragrance Oils for Candle Making

The Indian woody shelf, and how woods burn

Five materials carry the woody side of Indian fragrance. Chandan, creamy and soft, the most familiar wood in the country. Khus, vetiver root: in memory a cool summer thing (the wetted screens, the green sherbet), in the bottle an earthy, smoky root. Mitti, damp soil after rain, which Indian perfumery treats as a wood-adjacent base. Kesar with cedar, where saffron's leathery warmth sits on dry wood. And oud, agarwood, dark and resinous, with Assam as India's historic source. Woods behave differently from florals in a candle, and that changes how you test them. What follows is general judgement about the family, not measured data for these oils:

They bloom slowly. Base notes lift off a warm wax pool more gradually than citrus or florals. A woody candle that smells faint at 30 minutes may fill the room at two hours. Judge at two hours.

They reward a longer cure. None of the woody pages here states a cure time. At least 48–72 hours, longer for soy, is common practice; for woods we would cure a full week and re-sniff at day 14.

They can need a bigger wick. Heavy bases in a full melt pool usually perform better than in a narrow tunnel. Test C1 and C2 side by side from the start.

Smoky oils can smell burnt if the flame runs hot. Vetiver, oud and incense notes tip from "smoky" to "burnt" faster than creamy woods. Watch the flame and trim the wick.

Three sandalwoods: plain, perfume-grade, temple

Real Indian sandalwood, Santalum album, has been scarce and tightly controlled for decades, which is why sandalwood fragrance, in candles and in most perfume, is a reconstruction of the scent rather than the wood's own oil. That is not a flaw; it is why you can afford a sandalwood candle at all. CSI offers three distinct reconstructions, and they are not interchangeable.

The plain Sandalwood is the right oil for most ranges: stated load, every size in stock, flat ₹5.03 a gram from 100 g. The perfume-grade listing costs 63% more per gram at 50 g, and what you are paying for is structure: saffron and cardamom on top, rose in the heart, benzoin (the loban resin) and vanilla underneath. That makes it the sandal for a Diwali or wedding candle rather than an everyday one. Sacred Sandal Ember is for a temple story specifically, and its only in-stock size makes it a ₹3,727.60 bigger first buy than 50 g of plain Sandalwood. We would not start there unless the temple is your brand. Khus and mitti: the earth end

Khus. Vetiver Fragrance Oil describes itself as "smoky, woody, and grounding with subtle green and sweet undertones", states "Up to 10% for soy wax candles ... Up to 6% for paraffin wax candles", and calls itself "IFRA-certified" (the page's wording). Indian customers who remember khus as the cool smell of summer screens may find it smokier than they expect, because the root oil itself is smoky and earthy; the sherbet memory is green and sugary. In our judgement it is strongest as a supporting note (a quarter of a blend under sandalwood) or as a dark, dry candle for men's and winter ranges. Its ladder is unusual: the 15 g is ₹187.62, ₹12.51 a gram and 77% dearer per gram than the 50 g, so skip it; the 500 g at ₹5.80 is 18.1% below the 50 g; and the 1 kg is out of stock on 24 September 2026. Mitti. Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) describes "fresh rain, soft soil, natural patchouli, damp woods, and light musk" and states "6-10% for candles". The patchouli is the woody backbone: it is what lets an earth note sit as a base and last. It is flat at ₹8.96 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg (₹107.52 of oil per 8% candle at any size), which makes it, from 50 g up, the dearest candle-grade wood here. We sell the 1 kg; the only reason to buy it is volume, never price. One customer review on its page reads: "Gilli Mitti and Pumpkin Spice scents are amazing and authentic." That is one customer's view, not a test result.

Kesar with cedar. Saffron Cedarwood lists "Top: Citrus, Cardamom Middle: Palo Santo, Saffron, Violet Base: Wood, Sandalwood, Smoke and Amber" and states no candle load. It is the spiced wood of the shelf, closer to a festive box of dry fruit and saffron than to a forest. Its pricing needs care: the 500 g (₹2,584.20, ₹5.17/g) is the cheapest per gram, the 1 kg (₹6,867.60, ₹6.87/g) is 33% dearer, and two 500 g packs (₹5,168.40) cost ₹1,699.20 less than one kilogram. Even its 15 g (₹6.92/g) is cheaper per gram than its 50 g (₹7.08/g). Ask us on WhatsApp before any 1 kg order.

Oud options from ₹4.53 a gram, and why ₹7,000.00 oud is not one

Oud is the note with the widest price range on the whole CSI site. Every oud candle oil is an accord, built to suggest agarwood's dark, resinous, slightly animalic wood; real oud oil is a perfume material priced by the gram. Read down the last column and the decision makes itself for most brands. Woody Oud gives you a stated load and ₹54.37 of oil per candle from 100 g; White Royal Oud, the softer, rose-and-sandal oud, is 55% dearer per gram at 50 g; Royal Oud is a reasonable per-candle cost but only from a ₹3,300.00 first buy and with no stated load. Pure Hindi Oud Oil, at ₹7,000.00 a gram, is about 1545 times Woody Oud's per-gram price at 100 g. Its place is an attar or a perfume, not a candle. Six woody oils to buy

Ranked on how directly the stated notes carry an Indian wood, whether a candle load is stated, price per gram, stock depth and base-note weight. CSI has no throw measurements for these oils. Candle counts assume a 150 g candle at 8% (12 g of oil).

Two Indian wood blends, costed

Many of the best Indian woody candles are two-oil blends: a creamy wood with a dark accent. These are worked examples to start a test from, not formulas we have measured. Keep the total within the lowest stated ceiling of any oil in the blend and of the wax (10% here); these use 12 g, which is 8% of a 150 g candle.

Worked-example material cost of the chandan-khus candle at 100 g oil prices, 138 g CSI 464 (₹70.02), the clear 150 g jar (₹94.40) and a C2 wick (₹9.44): ₹237.10. A Woody Oud candle on the same basis is ₹228.24. Both exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Testing woods: the slow-bloom method

For six oils at three loads, plus a second 8% candle in a C2 lane, you need 24 candles (48 g of each 50 g bottle), about 3.3 kg of wax and a wick trial. A wick trial for woods is worth its cost: 20 C1 and 20 C2 wicks are ₹306.80 (₹5.90 and ₹9.44 each).
