Oud, Rose and Sandalwood Fragrance Oils for Indian Luxury Candles

Why these three notes are one idea

The trio works in India for a reason that has nothing to do with candle trends. For centuries the attar makers of Kannauj have made their floral attars by hydro-distilling petals in copper degs and running the vapour into a receiving vessel of sandalwood oil. Rose attar, in that tradition, is literally rose carried on sandalwood. Oud came in by a different road: agarwood from the forests of Assam and the north-east, traded west and returned as the Gulf-style oud oils and bakhoor that fill the attar shops of Old Delhi, Lucknow and Hyderabad. At those counters, oud is almost never sold alone. It is layered with rose.

So the three notes carry three jobs, and each makes the other two read as Indian rather than generic. Rose is the heart: gulab jal at a wedding entrance, gulkand, a garland. Sandalwood is the base and the bridge: creamy, slightly dry, the smell of a temple tilak and of the attar carrier oil itself. Oud is the depth: resinous, a little animalic, evening rather than morning. Take any one away and the other two drift: rose and sandalwood alone read as soap; oud and sandalwood alone read as a men's woody line (which is the job of Indian Woody Fragrance Oils for Candle Making and the masculine cluster).

Two cautions before you buy. First, every oil on this page is a fragrance oil built for candles or perfumery, not agarwood oil, rose otto or Mysore sandalwood oil; those naturals cost many times more and are not what CSI sells. Second, the word "royal" is already in half the product names in this category. Your customers have heard it. What they have not heard is a precise story: which rose, how smoky, which hour of the day. Every CSI option, note by note

Here is every in-stock oil at CSI that can credibly play each role, with prices verified on 24 September 2026. "Tier" is our grouping by price and grade, not a quality score: we have no throw measurements and will not invent any. What separates the tiers in practice is that candle-grade oils state a candle load and most perfume-grade and Royale-range oils do not.

Oud: seven in stock, one out

Two things stand out. Woody Oud is the cheapest oud per gram and states a candle load, but its heart is oud and patchouli, which pulls it earthy; beside a fresh rose it can read rustic rather than refined. White Royal Oud costs 79% more per gram at 100 g but is the only oud with a stated candle load whose page names rose and sandalwood in its own structure. Royal Oud Fragrance Oil also names all three notes, yet it is a perfume-grade listing with no candle load, its 100 g is out of stock, and the smallest buy is 500 g at ₹3,300.00. We would not open a trio on a 500 g blind purchase.

Rose: the thin note

British Rose is a garden rose, green and dewy, not the jammy, honeyed rose of a gulab attar. That is not a flaw, but it changes the story you can tell: it is the rose of a morning puja thali or a fresh garland, not of a mehfil at midnight. Smoked Rose Royale is the opposite: rose over a "smoky bakhoor accord", which is the closer match to the dark rose-and-incense style of the attar counter. It costs 2.3 times as much per gram at 100 g and states no candle load. The fourth row is CSI's product listing name for a perfume-grade oil; the oil is CSI's interpretation, CSI is not affiliated with the perfume house, and that name must never appear on your label. Its page gives only perfume usage rates (25%, 20%, 15%), which are not candle loads. At ₹143.52 of oil per 8% candle it is also the dearest rose by a distance.

Sandalwood: four routes, one clear value

The third row is CSI's product listing name; the oil is CSI's interpretation, CSI is not affiliated with the company named, and the name stays off your label. We mention it because its stated notes put rose inside the sandalwood, which is interesting for this trio, not because the name is a selling point. The six oils that carry the trio

Ranked within each note on what the pages let us show: whether a candle load is stated, price per gram, stock at every size, and how directly the stated notes serve the trio. Candle counts assume a 150 g candle at 8% (12 g of oil).

Pairing: three trios and four blends to test

There are two ways to use these oils. The first is a collection trio: three single-scent candles sold together, where each candle is one note and the set tells the story. The second is a blended trio: one candle carrying two or three notes. Collections are easier to make consistently; blends are harder to copy. Most brands end up doing both: three singles and one signature blend.

The Polished trio costs ₹14.28 more in oil per candle than the Standard; the Royale costs ₹49.80 more. On a candle that also carries ₹170.32 of wax, jar and wick, those gaps matter less than they look, but they are real, and the Royale trio also trades three stated candle loads for none. In our judgement, the Polished trio is the best ratio of story to evidence: two of the three oils are the same as the Standard, and the upgrade is concentrated in the note customers notice most in an Indian luxury candle, the oud.

Four blends worth pouring

These are starting ratios for your own tests, not formulas CSI has published. Each is 12 g of oil in a 150 g candle (8% total). Both British Rose and Sandalwood state up to 10% in soy and Woody Oud states 6–10% for candles, so a blend of them stays inside a 10% ceiling as long as the total does.

What a trio launch costs, at three tiers

Two stages: a trial (enough oil to pour each scent at 6%, 8% and 10% and one blend) and a launch (500 g of each oil, which is 41 candles per scent at 8%, 123 candles in all). Non-oil costs are identical across tiers, so the table isolates what the oil choice really costs you.

Every launch basket carries the same ₹21,782.80 of non-oil materials: 17 kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (10 kg ₹5,074.00 + 5 kg ₹2,537.00 + two 1 kg bags at ₹507.40; 123 candles need 16.97 kg), 130 Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lid (150 gram) (six packs of 20 at ₹1,888.00 plus one pack of 10 at ₹944.00), and 150 Eco Candle Wicks, Thin (C1) (packs of 100 at ₹590.00 and 50 at ₹295.00). CSI 464 is priced flat per gram from 1 kg to 10 kg, so the bag mix is about convenience, not saving. Wick size depends on the jar and the oil; treat C1 as a starting point, run a melt-pool test and see the Candle Wicks collection for alternatives.

One candle of each, costed

All figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. The spread from the cheapest candle (₹208.55) to the dearest (₹280.70) is almost entirely oil. For comparison, Amber Oud Royal would put ₹155.88 of oil into one candle at its 100 g price, close to the ₹170.32 of jar, wax and wick together: that is the practical meaning of "perfume-grade" in a candle budget.

What the trio cannot be built from right now

Regal Royal Oud is out of stock on 24 September 2026 at every size. Its stated notes (saffron; oud and cedarwood; sandalwood, amber, white musk) would have made it a natural Polished-tier oud. Do not plan a launch around it; ask on WhatsApp whether and when it returns. Royal Oud Fragrance Oil's 100 g is out of stock, so its only entry is 500 g. Sacred Sandal Ember's 100 g and 1 kg are out of stock; only the 500 g can be bought.

No attar-style rose with a stated candle load. If your idea of rose is the jammy, honeyed gulab of a Kannauj attar, British Rose will read greener and lighter; Smoked Rose Royale adds depth but no stated load. The honest routes are to blend British Rose over Sandalwood (the gulab-chandan blend above), or to test Smoked Rose Royale carefully. No natural oud, rose otto or sandalwood oil. CSI sells fragrance oils; if a customer asks whether your candle contains agarwood or Mysore sandalwood, the truthful answer is no.

Timing the trio: Diwali and the wedding months

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 45 days after these prices were checked. The trio is a natural Diwali and winter-wedding gift: rose and sandalwood for puja and gifting, oud for the evening. A trial (one week to arrive and pour, one week to cure, one week to burn) plus a production pour and cure fits in 45 days only if you start this week and confirm dispatch before you commit to customers. After Diwali, the same trio carries into Christmas (25 December 2026) and the North Indian winter, roughly December to February, when heavier oud and smoked-rose candles make more sense than in the Indian summer of roughly April to June.
