CSI Deep Buyer · Indian Luxury Collection
Every Indian candle range has sandalwood and jasmine. Here are six CSI oils that give yours a scent customers can name blind, the test that proves it, and a year of seasonal drops with the budget for each.
₹9,377.08
screen six candidates against generic controls, then load-test the finalists · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which CSI oils make an Indian collection distinctive rather than generic? Six: Gilli Mitti (Patchouli), Raat Ki Rani, Saffron Cedarwood, Smoked Rose Royale, Vetiver and White Royal Oud. Each takes a note every Indian range has — earth, jasmine, saffron, rose, khus, oud — and pairs it with something the generic version lacks: rain, green stems, smoke, bakhoor.

How do I prove they are distinctive? Test each one blind beside its generic control (Sandalwood, Jasmine or British Rose). If testers describe the candidate in the same words as the control, it is not distinctive enough to build a brand on.

What does it cost? The screen and load tests together cost ₹9,377.08 including wax, jars and wicks. A three-scent Diwali capsule of 120 candles costs ₹32,249.20 in materials; a year-one signature six of 300 candles, ₹81,181.40.

What can I not build on? Mogra and Rajnigandha — both out of stock on 24 September 2026. Vetiver's 1 kg is out of stock too, and Smoked Rose Royale starts at 100 g.
The short answer
Signature six: Gilli Mitti (monsoon earth), Raat Ki Rani (night garden), Saffron Cedarwood (spice and smoke), Smoked Rose Royale (rose and bakhoor), Vetiver (khus), White Royal Oud (the celebration oud).
Sequence: distinctiveness screen at 15 g → load tests at 50 g → Diwali capsule of three → one new scent per season, so the brand has something new four times a year.
Decision rule: a scent joins only if two of three blind testers can tell it from its generic control and it performs at 8% or lower (or at your chosen load where the page states none).
Budget: ₹9,377.08 to test; ₹32,249.20 for a 120-candle capsule; ₹81,181.40 for 300 candles across the year.
Where distinctive lives: the Indian collection map Placement is editorial judgement from each product page's stated notes, not a measurement. SIGNATURE ZONE GENERIC ZONE ← familiar (every Indian candle range has it) distinctive (a customer remembers it) → light, fresh ↑ · deep, smoky ↓ British Rose control Jasmine control Sandalwood control Mogra out of stock Rajnigandha out of stock Raat Ki Rani ₹6.77/g at 500 g Gilli Mitti ₹8.96/g flat Vetiver (khus) 1 kg out of stock White Royal Oud ₹8.10/g from 100 g Saffron Cedarwood no load stated Smoked Rose Royale 100 g minimum Black = signature candidate (in stock). Outline = generic control. Dashed = out of stock on 24 September 2026. A distinctive collection needs most of its scents right of the centre line and at least one in each half, top and bottom. Prices: CSI live pricing, verified 24 September 2026.
The collection map. Generic Indian notes cluster on the left; the six signature candidates spread across the right, from light (Raat Ki Rani) to deep and smoky (Smoked Rose Royale). The two most traditional white florals, Mogra and Rajnigandha, are out of stock and cannot anchor a plan today.
Straight answer
I am creating a luxury Indian candle brand. Which fragrance oils can build a collection that is distinctive, not just another sandalwood-and-jasmine range?
Build on six oils that each pair a familiar Indian note with something unexpected: Gilli Mitti (rain on dry earth, patchouli), Raat Ki Rani (night jasmine with green stems and ozone), Saffron Cedarwood (cardamom, saffron, palo santo and smoke), Smoked Rose Royale (rose over a bakhoor accord), Vetiver (smoky, green khus) and White Royal Oud (saffron and rose over a soft oud). Prove each is distinctive by burning it blind beside a generic control, test the survivors at three loads, then launch in seasonal drops rather than all at once: a three-scent capsule for Diwali on 8 November 2026, a new scent each season after. Screening and load tests cost ₹9,377.08; the Diwali capsule of 120 candles costs ₹32,249.20 in materials. Do not plan around Mogra or Rajnigandha: both are out of stock on 24 September 2026.
One line: distinctive means a customer can name your candle blind; test for that directly, then release the collection one season at a time.
Start with the screen. Six signature candidates plus three generic controls cost ₹1,781.08 in oil — ₹1,490.46 for the six, ₹290.62 for the controls. Gilli Mitti 15 g is ₹140.00.
Buy Gilli Mitti 15 g — ₹140.00

Why "sandalwood and jasmine" is not a brand

If a customer could buy your candle's scent in any temple market, you are selling a jar, not a fragrance.

The Indian palette — chandan, mogra, raat ki rani, rajnigandha, gilli mitti, khus, oud, rose, saffron — and what CSI stocks in it now is laid out in the hub, Buy Indian-Inspired Fragrance Oils for Candle Making. The cultural and seasonal meaning of each note is in Traditional Indian Fragrances for Luxury Candles. This page answers a narrower commercial question: which of those notes can carry a brand, and how you prove it before you spend on stock.

The problem with the obvious choices is not quality. Sandalwood Fragrance Oil, Jasmine Fragrance Oil and British Rose Fragrance Oil are good, well-priced oils with stated candle loads, and at least one belongs in most Indian ranges. The problem is that every other Indian candle brand has them too, and a customer comparing three "sandalwood" candles compares price. A distinctive collection gives the customer a reason to compare you with nobody.

Our working definition, which the test in Phase 1 measures: a scent is distinctive if two of three people, smelling it blind, describe it in words they do not use for the nearest generic oil. "Rain", "wet earth" and "first shower" are distinctive words; "woody" and "nice" are not.

Argued against our own interest: our cheapest, deepest-stocked Indian oils are the generic ones — Sandalwood is ₹5.03/g from 100 g, Jasmine ₹3.92/g at 500 g, British Rose ₹3.07/g at 1 kg — and the distinctive ones cost more. Gilli Mitti is flat at ₹8.96/g from 50 g. If price per gram is your first filter, you will build the generic range. Pay for distinctiveness only where the blind test says you are getting it.

The signature six, and the generic each one beats

Each card names the generic control it must beat in the blind test. Notes and loads are quoted from the product pages; the pairing and positioning are our judgement. CSI has no throw measurements for these oils.

1
earthy · monsoon · beats generic sandalwood
Gilli Mitti (Patchouli)
In our judgement, the most recognisably Indian scent on this list. The page describes "fresh rain, soft soil, natural patchouli, damp woods, and light musk. Evokes petrichor - the scent of rain on dry earth", with "The recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles" and the wording "A rich, earthy IFRA-certified fragrance oil" (the page's wording; ask for documents on WhatsApp). A verified customer named it alongside Pumpkin Spice as "amazing and authentic". Limitation: patchouli can dominate the "rain" at higher loads, so your 6% candle may be the truest.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹140.00 ₹9.33 1
50 g ₹448.00 ₹8.96 4
100 g ₹896.00 ₹8.96 8
500 g ₹4,480.00 ₹8.96 41
1 kg ₹8,960.00 ₹8.96 83
Flat ₹8.96/g from 50 g to 1 kg: 100 g bottles cost the same per gram as the kilogram. Oil per 8% candle: ₹107.52. Buy Gilli Mitti
2
white floral · night garden · beats generic jasmine
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Fragrance Oil
The jasmine with a setting: "Top Notes: Green Stems, Fresh Ozone | Middle Notes: Night-Blooming Jasmine, White Florals | Base Notes: Soft Amber, Musk", "Recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles". The green stems and ozone are what separate it from a sweet, musky jasmine, and they are what your blind test should hear. In stock at every size, and the in-stock alternative now that Mogra and Rajnigandha are unavailable. Limitation: ozone is a bright top that can fade in the first hour; judge it at the one- and two-hour marks.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.67 1
50 g ₹370.00 ₹7.40 4
100 g ₹700.00 ₹7.00 8
500 g ₹3,387.00 ₹6.77 41
1 kg ₹6,774.00 ₹6.77 83
The 500 g and 1 kg are both ₹6.77/g. Oil per 8% candle at 500 g: ₹81.29. Buy Raat Ki Rani
3
spice and smoke · beats "kesar chandan"
Saffron Cedarwood
Saffron and sandalwood is the most common "luxury Indian" pairing; this oil adds cardamom, palo santo, violet and smoke. Stated notes: "Top: Citrus, Cardamom Middle: Palo Santo, Saffron, Violet Base: Wood, Sandalwood, Smoke and Amber". The page does not state a candle load, so work inside your wax ceiling and test 6%, 8% and 10%. Pricing facts to plan around: its 15 g (₹6.92/g) is 2.2% cheaper per gram than its 50 g, and its 1 kg (₹6,867.60) is 33% dearer per gram than its 500 g (₹2,584.20).
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹103.84 ₹6.92 1
50 g ₹354.00 ₹7.08 4
100 g ₹696.20 ₹6.96 8
500 g ₹2,584.20 ₹5.17 41
1 kg ₹6,867.60 ₹6.87 83
Two 500 g packs cost ₹5,168.40, ₹1,699.20 less than one 1 kg. Oil per 8% candle at 500 g: ₹62.02. Buy Saffron Cedarwood
4
smoky floral · beats generic rose
Smoked Rose Royale
Rose is everywhere; rose over bakhoor smoke is not. The page lists "Top Notes:Dark rose petals Middle Notes:Smoky bakhoor accord, soft spice Base Notes:Amber, musk, warm woody undertones". No candle load is stated. It is the deepest scent on the map and the natural winter and wedding-season candle. Limitations: the smallest size is 100 g (₹799.00), so the screen costs more here than anywhere else; and its 500 g (₹3,999.00) costs ₹4.00 more than five 100 g bottles (₹3,995.00).
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
100 g ₹799.00 ₹7.99 8
500 g ₹3,999.00 ₹8.00 41
1 kg ₹7,999.00 ₹8.00 83
Buy in 100 g bottles: ₹7.99/g against ₹8.00/g at 500 g and 1 kg. Oil per 8% candle: ₹95.88. Buy Smoked Rose Royale
5
woody earthy · khus · beats generic "cooling"
Vetiver Fragrance Oil
The khus note Indian customers know from summer, in a candle: "smoky, woody, and grounding with subtle green and sweet undertones", "Up to 10% for soy wax candles ... Up to 6% for paraffin wax candles", and "A deeply earthy, IFRA-certified vetiver fragrance oil" (the page's wording). It is the one deep scent that belongs in summer, which is why it gets its own drop. Limitations: the 1 kg is out of stock on 24 September 2026, so 500 g is your bulk ceiling for now; and the 15 g is 77% dearer per gram than the 50 g — if you already expect to load-test it, the 50 g costs only ₹166.38 more.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹187.62 ₹12.51 1
50 g ₹354.00 ₹7.08 4
100 g ₹600.00 ₹6.00 8
500 g ₹2,900.00 ₹5.80 41
1 kg ₹5,664.00 — Out of stock on 24 September 2026 ₹5.66 Out of stock
500 g is ₹5.80/g; oil per 8% candle at 500 g: ₹69.60. Buy Vetiver
6
oud · celebration · beats heavy generic oud
White Royal Oud
An oud that reads Indian rather than Gulf because of its saffron and rose: "bergamot and saffron top notes, white royal oud, rose petals, and labdanum middle notes, and creamy sandalwood, ambergris, and soft musk base", "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles", described as "IFRA-certified" on the page. It is the least distinctive of the six on our map — oud is common — but the most giftable, which is why it belongs in the Diwali capsule. Limitation: if your testers call it "oud" and nothing else, it has failed the distinctiveness test; try Dark Vanilla Oud (cardamom, vanilla, oud) as the alternative.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.67 1
50 g ₹420.00 ₹8.40 4
100 g ₹810.00 ₹8.10 8
500 g ₹4,051.00 ₹8.10 41
1 kg ₹8,103.00 ₹8.10 83
Flat ₹8.10/g from 100 g. Oil per 8% candle: ₹97.20. Buy White Royal Oud

Phase 1: the distinctiveness screen

Nine bottles, ten candles, one question: can a stranger tell yours from the generic?

The screen pours one 8% candle of each signature candidate and one of each generic control, in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (its page states up to 13%; where an oil page states a lower maximum, that lower figure governs, and for the oils with no stated load we stay at 6–10%). Smoked Rose Royale gets two candles, at 6% and 8%, because it comes in 100 g.

1
Pair each candidate with its controlGilli Mitti, Saffron Cedarwood, Vetiver and White Royal Oud against Sandalwood; Raat Ki Rani against Jasmine; Smoked Rose Royale against British Rose. Label the bases only; the jars must look identical.
2
Cure seven daysNone of these pages states a cure time for candles. At least 48–72 hours, longer for soy, is common practice; seven days is our judgement for a fair comparison. Sniff on day 3 and day 7 if you want to know how early you can ship.
3
Three-word test, coldThree testers, separately. For each jar, write three words. No discussion. Collect the sheets before anyone talks.
4
Three-word test, hotBurn candidate and control on consecutive sessions in the same room. At one hour, the same three testers write three words from the doorway.
5
Score distinctivenessFor each candidate, count testers whose words share nothing with the words they used for its control. Two or three: distinctive. Zero or one: generic in disguise.
6
Score performanceDoorway score 1–5 at one hour, and whether the scent survives five minutes after blow-out. A distinctive scent that fails at 8% goes into Phase 2 only if you are prepared to cost it at 10%.
The words tell you the label copy
Keep the sheets. If two strangers wrote "first rain" for Gilli Mitti or "night garden" for Raat Ki Rani, those are your product names and your first line of description — in your customers' words, not a supplier's. How to position the finished range at a luxury price is covered in Indian Luxury Fragrance Oils for Candle Brands.
Mistake: skipping the controls to save ₹290.62. Fix: without a control, "distinctive" is your opinion. With a control, it is a result you can defend to a retailer or investor, and the controls tell you which generic oil you will still want as the familiar anchor in your range.

Phase 2: load tests for the finalists

Anything that passed the distinctiveness screen now gets a proper load test: 50 g, poured at 6%, 8% and 10% with a retest at the winning load (48 g of oil). In the worked example four candidates pass — Gilli Mitti, Raat Ki Rani, Saffron Cedarwood and White Royal Oud — and Smoked Rose Royale uses the rest of its 100 g bottle. Vetiver is deliberately held to a later cycle: it is the summer drop, and there is no point load-testing a summer scent in October.

The decision rules for Phase 2

Rule 1 — lowest working load. Keep the lowest load that scores 3 or more at the doorway at one hour. For the oils whose pages state no candle load (Saffron Cedarwood, Smoked Rose Royale and any perfume-grade alternative), this is the only evidence you will have, so pour the retest before you believe it. Rule 2 — the map must balance. Your launched scents should include at least one from the top half of the map (light: Raat Ki Rani) and one from the bottom (deep: Saffron Cedarwood, Smoked Rose Royale, White Royal Oud). Rule 3 — one familiar anchor. Keep one generic control in the range as the familiar entry point; the screen tells you which one your testers liked. Rule 4 — cost fits the tier. Worked example at 8% with chunks (₹82.79 of wax at ₹0.60/g), a 150 g clear jar (₹94.40) and a C1 wick (₹5.90): Gilli Mitti at the 100 g price costs ₹290.61 in materials, Sandalwood ₹243.41. The ₹47.20 difference is the price of distinctiveness per candle. Both exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

A vessel changes the story as much as the oil. The Orange Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) is ₹1,070.00 for 10 (₹107.00 each) and puts a Gilli Mitti candle at ₹303.21 in materials; other options are in the glass jars collection. The oud-rose-sandalwood core as a separate luxury trio is priced in Oud, Rose and Sandalwood Fragrance Oils for Indian Luxury Candles.

If only two candidates pass the screen: launch the Diwali capsule with those two plus your best control, and run a second screen in January with Vetiver, Dark Vanilla Oud and Midnight Bakhoor Royale. If none pass: do not launch a "distinctive" brand on generic oils; launch the generic range honestly priced and keep screening.

Phase 3: launch in seasonal drops

Six scents released together is a catalogue. Six released over a year is a story.

The Indian palette is unusually seasonal, and that is a commercial gift: rain in the monsoon, khus in the heat, smoke and rose in the wedding months, lamps and oud at Diwali. Releasing the signature six in drops gives you four launch moments a year, spreads stock risk, and lets each scent be tested in its own season. The dates below are calendar facts; which scent fits which season is our judgement.

Four drops · the signature six across a year
Calendar facts, not forecasts
Drop Selling window Scents Order oil by Why this season
1 · Diwali capsule late October to Diwali, 8 November 2026 Saffron Cedarwood, White Royal Oud, Raat Ki Rani 17 October 2026 Gifting; spice, oud and a night-garden white floral
2 · Winter and weddings December 2026 to February 2027 (winter roughly December–February) Smoked Rose Royale (+ Drop 1 restocks) 20 November 2026 Deep, smoky rose for cold evenings and wedding gifting; Christmas is 25 December 2026, Valentine's Day 14 February 2027
3 · Summer Indian summer, roughly April–June 2027 Vetiver (khus) early March 2027, after a February load test The one deep scent that reads cool
4 · Monsoon southwest monsoon, roughly June–September 2027 Gilli Mitti early May 2027 First rain on dry earth: the most seasonal scent in the set

Gilli Mitti is load-tested now (Phase 2) but released last, in the monsoon: that is deliberate. You learn its load in October, when you have time, and launch it when the smell of first rain is already on customers' minds. If you would rather open the brand with your most distinctive scent, move it to Drop 1 and hold Raat Ki Rani back; the budgets barely change.

Stock realities and reorder triggers

A distinctive collection is only as good as your ability to make it again. Three of the six have stock or pack quirks you must plan around, and every one of them has a reorder rule that follows from its price ladder, not from a general "buy bigger" habit.

Four triggers

Reorder trigger. Reorder an oil when what is left covers less than three weeks of sales — in our worked example, one week for dispatch and delivery, one for pouring and curing, one for safety. For a scent selling ten candles a week that is 360 g. Drop trigger. Four weeks before each drop's order date, check every size of that drop's oil on the product page; if a size you need is out of stock, ask on WhatsApp the same day, not the week you need it. Retire trigger. A signature scent that sells below half the collection average for two drops is retired and replaced by the next screened candidate (Dark Vanilla Oud, Midnight Bakhoor Royale). Restock trigger for the unavailable. If Mogra or Rajnigandha return, they enter at Phase 1 like anything else; a restock is not a test result.

Mistake: building the brand story around a scent you cannot currently buy. Fix: Mogra and Rajnigandha are out of stock on 24 September 2026. Plan on Raat Ki Rani as your white floral, and treat the others as a future addition. Stock depth by size across the range is covered in Where to Buy Indian-Inspired Fragrance Oils for a Premium Candle Brand.
The CSI principle
Pay for distinctiveness only where a stranger can smell it.
The blind test beside a generic control turns "unique" from a marketing word into a result. Everything you spend after that — load tests, drops, reorders — is spent on scents that have earned it.
"Every Indian candle range has sandalwood. Very few have the smell of the first rain. Build on the second, anchor with the first."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wax, jars and wicks named here, and does not sell finished candles. This plan points out that our cheapest Indian oils are the generic ones, tells you not to build on two of our best-known florals because they are out of stock, and advises 100 g bottles where our larger packs save nothing.

Every price, pack size and per-gram figure was checked on CSI's live store and verified on 24 September 2026. Out-of-stock products and sizes — Mogra, Rajnigandha, Vetiver 1 kg, Sacred Sandal Ember 100 g and 1 kg — are flagged and never offered as buyable. Notes and candle loads are quoted from each product page; where a page states no candle load, we say so.

The collection map, the pairings with generic controls, the drop calendar and the survivors in the worked examples are editorial judgement; CSI has no throw measurements for these oils. Frequently asked questions

What are unique Indian fragrances for luxury candles?
At CSI the six we would screen are Gilli Mitti (rain on dry earth), Raat Ki Rani (night-blooming jasmine with green stems), Saffron Cedarwood (saffron, cardamom and smoke), Smoked Rose Royale (rose and bakhoor), Vetiver (khus) and White Royal Oud (saffron, rose and oud). Each pairs a familiar Indian note with something the generic version lacks.
Is there a gilli mitti fragrance oil for candles in India?
Yes. CSI's Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) is described as "fresh rain, soft soil, natural patchouli, damp woods, and light musk", with a stated load of 6-10% for candles. It is ₹140.00 for 15 g and flat at ₹8.96/g from 50 g to 1 kg.
Is mogra fragrance oil available for candles?
Not on 24 September 2026: CSI's Mogra Fragrance Oil and Rajnigandha (Tuberose) are both out of stock. Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) is in stock at every size and is the nearest white floral to plan around; ask on WhatsApp for restock news.
How do I make my Indian candle brand different from others?
Test for it. Burn each candidate blind beside a generic control (sandalwood, jasmine or rose) and ask three people for three words each. A scent is distinctive if two of three describe it in words they do not use for the control. Then release the collection in seasonal drops rather than all at once.
How much does it cost to launch an Indian luxury candle collection?
With CSI materials, screening and load-testing cost ₹9,377.08. A three-scent Diwali capsule of 120 candles costs ₹32,249.20 and 300 candles across six scents cost ₹81,181.40, for oils, wax, 150 g jars and wicks, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST.
Can I name my candle after a brand or a perfume?
No. Where a CSI listing name includes a brand (such as the Sandal listing in the table above), that is CSI's product listing name; the oil is an interpretation and CSI is not affiliated with the brand. Do not put third-party brand names on your own labels. Name candles after the scent's setting — first rain, night garden, spice market.
Phase 1 · the distinctiveness screen
Six candidates and three controls: ₹1,781.08.
All nine in stock on 24 September 2026. Burn each candidate beside its generic control, keep what strangers can name, and release the collection one season at a time.
