A container candle is the most forgiving format for fragrance: the jar holds the melt pool, so you can run a soft container wax at a full load. That makes the choice of oil less about whether it will hold and more about family, load ceiling and cost per jar. This page shortlists the oils and prices them inside five real CSI containers.

material cost of one 200 g White Matte jar candle with Lavender at 8% · oil, wax, wick and jar · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What are the best fragrance oils for container candles? There is no single best oil; there is a best shortlist per family. Start with Lavender (first in CSI's best-selling sort), British Rose, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Sandalwood, Vanilla Bean and Lemongrass and Lime. Test each in your jar and wax before you commit. See the family shortlist.

How much fragrance oil goes in a jar candle? Weight × load. A 200 g candle at 8% takes 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. The 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin takes 6.8 g at 8%. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%.

What does one container candle cost to make? With Lavender at its 100 g rate, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and an Eco Thin C1 wick: ₹273.32 in a White Matte jar, ₹119.46 in the 85 g tin and ₹81.01 in a mini glass jar (illustrative 50 g fill). Excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Do I need special fragrance oils for jars? No. CSI's fragrance oils are sold for candle making in general, and the same oil is used across jar sizes. What changes with the container is how much oil you need, the wick and the wax. Test every oil in your own jar and wax before selling.
The short answer
Shortlist: Lavender · British Rose · Japanese Cherry Blossom · Sandalwood · Vanilla Bean · Lemongrass and Lime · Blue Ocean · Apple Cinnamon — one per family, all in stock at 15 g and 100 g on 24 September 2026.
Oil per jar: 8% load: 200 g jar = 16 g · 180 g = 14.4 g · 100 g = 8 g · 85 g tin = 6.8 g · 50 g mini = 4 g. Only the tin's 85 g fill is published.
Cost per jar: Lavender, Chunks, Eco Thin C1: White Matte ₹273.32 · Salsa ₹222.97 · Yankee ₹151.41 · tin ₹119.46 · mini ₹81.01.

One oil, five CSI containers — grams of oil at an 8% load and the material cost of each candle 200 g fill 16 g oil 180 g fill 14.4 g oil 100 g fill 8 g oil 85 g fill 6.8 g oil 50 g fill 4 g oil White Matte ₹273.32 per candle Salsa 200 ml ₹222.97 per candle Yankee 130 ml ₹151.41 per candle Golden tin ₹119.46 per candle Mini glass ₹81.01 per candle Box height = fill weight. Dark band = oil, drawn at 3× scale. Only the tin's 85 g fill is published. Lavender at its 100 g rate, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, one Eco Thin C1 wick. Excludes labour, packaging, freight, GST.
The same Lavender oil costs a different amount in every container because the fill weight changes, while the wick and the container itself are fixed costs per candle. Wax is the largest line in every format, and in the Yankee and mini jars the container costs more than the fragrance. Fill weights other than the tin's published 85 g are illustrative — weigh your own jar filled to your pour line.
Straight answer
What are the best fragrance oils for container candles, and how should a jar candle maker choose them?
The best oils for container candles are the ones that suit your customer, sit comfortably inside your wax's load ceiling and leave room in the price of the jar. Choose by family first, then by cost per candle. A strong starting shortlist from CSI's catalogue is Lavender (first in the collection's best-selling sort), British Rose, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Sandalwood, Vanilla Bean and Lemongrass and Lime. Container candles are the easiest format for fragrance because the jar holds the melt pool, so a soft container wax can carry a full load: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%. The container then decides the quantity. A 200 g jar at 8% needs 16 g of oil and the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin needs 6.8 g. With Lavender at its 100 g rate, a White Matte jar candle costs ₹273.32 in materials, and in the Yankee and mini jars the container costs more than the fragrance. Test every shortlisted oil in your own jar and wax; we have not published throw measurements for any oil.
One line: pick the family, then the jar, then price the candle — never the other way round.
The quickest way to build a container shortlist is four 15 g testers from four families: Lavender ₹105.02, Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹104.00, Sandalwood ₹93.22 and Lemongrass and Lime ₹116.52. That is ₹418.76 for 60 g of oil, enough for one 200 g test jar of each at 7.5%, or three 50 g mini jars of each at 8% (4 g of oil per jar).

What each CSI container holds

The container sets the quantity. The oil sets the character. Most costing mistakes come from deciding the second before the first.

CSI lists several containers that suit scented candles, from a matte white glass jar to a golden aluminium tin. Only one of them has a published fill weight: the Golden Aluminium Tin is sold as an 85 g fill. For the others, this page uses illustrative fills so the maths can be shown: 200 g for the White Matte Glass Jar, 180 g for the 200 ml Salsa jar, 100 g for the Yankee 130 ml jar and 50 g for the Mini Glass Jars. Your own figure comes from weighing a jar filled to your pour line.

Container prices verified 10 September 2026 (White Matte) and pulled 24–25 September 2026 (others) · Lavender at its 100 g rate
Five containers, their fill and the oil each needs at 8%
Container Pack Per container Fill used here Oil at 8% Lavender oil cost
White Matte Glass Jar 5 for ₹354.00 ₹70.80 200 g (illustrative) 16 g ₹86.40
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, golden lug cap 5 for ₹200.60 ₹40.12 180 g (illustrative) 14.4 g ₹77.76
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml, clear cap ₹47.20 each ₹47.20 100 g (illustrative) 8 g ₹43.20
Golden Aluminium Tin 12 for ₹360.00 ₹30.00 85 g (published) 6.8 g ₹36.72
Mini Glass Jars, Black 5 for ₹129.80 ₹25.96 50 g (illustrative) 4 g ₹21.60

Two things are worth noticing. First, the per-container price varies more than the fill. The Salsa jar costs ₹40.12 each in the 5-pack and falls to ₹29.50 in the 50-pack (₹1,475.00) and the 100-pack (₹2,950.00); the White Matte jar is ₹70.80. Second, the oil quantity scales exactly with the fill, so the fragrance line on your costing is the one that moves when you change jar size, while the container line moves when you change jar style. Both are decisions, and they are separate ones.

Weigh your jar before you cost anything
Fill a jar with water to the line you will pour wax to, weigh it, and note the figure. Wax is lighter than water, so the wax fill will weigh a little less; pour one test candle and weigh it to get your real fill. That single number feeds every calculation on this page. Do it once per container style and write it on the shelf.

The family shortlist

A container range needs breadth more than it needs a single perfect oil. Customers browsing a shelf of jars choose by family first — fresh, floral, woody, sweet — and only then by the name on the label. So the practical shortlist is one proven oil per family, each costed. The table uses the 100 g price because that is the size most jar candle makers produce from once a scent has passed its test; the 15 g tester costs more per gram.

100 g prices, CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · 200 g jar, 8% load, Chunks, Eco Thin C1, White Matte jar
One candidate per family, priced into a 200 g jar
Family Oil 100 g Per gram Oil in one jar (16 g) Material cost per jar
Fresh herbal Lavender ₹540.00 ₹5.40 ₹86.40 ₹273.32
Soft floral British Rose ₹342.20 ₹3.42 ₹54.75 ₹241.67
Blossom floral Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹500.00 ₹5.00 ₹80.00 ₹266.92
Woody Sandalwood ₹502.68 ₹5.03 ₹80.43 ₹267.34
Gourmand Vanilla Bean ₹790.00 ₹7.90 ₹126.40 ₹313.32
Citrus-green Lemongrass and Lime ₹590.00 ₹5.90 ₹94.40 ₹281.32
Aquatic fresh Blue Ocean ₹495.00 ₹4.95 ₹79.20 ₹266.12
Fruit and spice Apple Cinnamon ₹474.36 ₹4.74 ₹75.90 ₹262.81

The spread is narrower than many makers expect. At the 100 g rate the oil in a 200 g jar runs from ₹54.75 for British Rose to ₹126.40 for Vanilla Bean. That is a difference of ₹71.65 per candle, on a candle whose jar alone costs ₹70.80. For most container ranges, fragrance is not the main reason a candle is expensive to make: the wax and jar together come to ₹181.02, more than the oil for every oil in this table. The luxury tier is different, and premium oils for luxury jar candles works through that cost stack.

Why these eight? Each is in stock at both 15 g and 100 g on the pull date, so you can test cheaply and then produce without switching size family. Lavender sits first in the collection's best-selling sort, and British Rose, Sandalwood and Japanese Cherry Blossom are near the top of it. Blue Ocean and Lemongrass and Lime give you a fresh profile for bathrooms and summer gifting, and Apple Cinnamon covers the festive shelf. The list is a starting point for tests, not a verdict on performance.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. It would suit us to tell you to buy twenty oils. You do not need them. A first container range works with four to six scents, one per family, and every extra scent adds a tester, a label, a stock line and a slower-moving jar. Start with four, learn which your customers reorder, and add from there. Designing a luxury container collection covers how many scents a range really needs.

Matching oil, wax and load

An oil does not have a fragrance load. A wax has a ceiling, and the oil is poured under it.

Container candles are poured in soft waxes that stay put inside a jar. CSI sells four that are listed for containers or commonly used in them. Only two have a fragrance-load ceiling quoted in this series: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%. Those are the wax maker's stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. For the coconut soy and soy pearl waxes, check the product page or ask on WhatsApp for the maker's stated maximum before you plan a load.

13% 26 g 174 g ₹140.40 within 13% above CSI 464's 10% — do not use

Use 8% as the working load for costing and first tests, then test 6% and 10% beside it. More oil is not automatically more scent; past the point the candle can burn cleanly, extra oil can seep or sweat on the surface and is simply wasted money. The load ceiling tells you where to stop, not where to start. Fragrance oils at a 6–8% load in soy goes deeper into the lower end of the range, and the best load in coconut soy wax covers the coconut blends.

The ceiling is not a target. A maker switches from Chunks to CSI 464 to save money and keeps pouring at 12% because that is what the old recipe said. CSI 464 is rated up to 10%. The saving of ₹16.85 on wax per 200 g jar (184 g at ₹599.00 a kilo against ₹507.40) is real, but only if the recipe is re-worked for the new wax's ceiling. Change the wax, re-cost the load, re-test.

One oil, five containers, five costs

Here is Lavender at its 100 g rate poured into each of the five containers, with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and one Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90. Material cost means oil, wax, wick and container only. It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Lavender ₹5.40/g · Chunks ₹0.60/g · Eco Thin C1 ₹5.90 · 8% load · fills other than the tin are illustrative

200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, golden lug cap 180 g ₹77.76 ₹99.19 ₹5.90 ₹40.12 ₹222.97 18.0%

Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g ₹36.72 ₹46.84 ₹5.90 ₹30.00 ₹119.46 25.1%
Mini Glass Jars, Black 50 g ₹21.60 ₹27.55 ₹5.90 ₹25.96 ₹81.01 32.0%

Wax is the largest line in every format. The container's share depends on both its price and the fill: it is highest in the mini glass jar (32.0%) and the Yankee jar (31.2%), where the container costs more than the oil, and lowest in the Salsa jar (18.0%), which is cheap for its size. In the mini jar the oil is only 26.7% of the material cost, so for small formats a cheaper container moves your margin more than a cheaper oil. For the 200 g jar, the oil is a meaningful line and the family you choose matters. The Golden Aluminium Tin is the cheapest route to a candle with a published fill weight: ₹119.46 in materials for 85 g.

Price per gram of candle is a useful cross-check if you sell several sizes. The White Matte jar works out at ₹1.37 per gram of candle, the tin at ₹1.41 and the mini jar at ₹1.62. A customer paying per gram of candle, which is how many compare, gets far more for their money in the larger jar; your pricing should reflect that the small formats cost more to make per gram. The 1 kg buying guide for container production shows how many of each format one kilo of oil pours.

The CSI principle
The container is a cost line, not packaging.
Makers often cost the wax and oil and then treat the jar as an extra. On this page the container is between 18% and 32% of every candle's material cost, and in the Yankee and mini jars it costs more than the oil. Put it on the same line as the oil and wax, and choose it with the same care.

Choosing your first container oils

The sequence below takes a new jar candle maker from nothing to a costed shortlist without buying production quantities of an untested scent.

1
Fix the container and weigh its fillPick one jar style for the first range and weigh a test pour. Everything else follows from this number. If you want a published fill weight to start from, the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin has one.
2
Pick one oil per familyFour families is enough for a first range: fresh, floral, woody and sweet. Use the shortlist table above or the best oils for soy candles if your wax is soy.
3
Buy 15 g testersFour testers from the buy strip above cost ₹418.76. Where an oil starts at 50 g, that is its tester. There is no fragrance sample pack; you build your own from the 15 g sizes.
4
Pour at 8%, then 6% and 10% beside itUse the same wax, wick and jar for every test so the oil is the only variable. Label each jar with oil, load and pour date.
5
Cure and burn testLet the jars cure before judging scent, then burn each long enough for the melt pool to reach the glass. Score cold and hot scent on the same day in the same room. Strong oils for scented jar candles has a full scoring sheet.
6
Cost the winners and move them to 100 gPut each passing oil through the per-candle table. Move proven scents to 100 g, where the tester premium disappears, and to 1 kg when reorders call for it.

Three oils from the shortlist show three different buying situations for container candles: a best-seller that is priced almost flat above 50 g, a woody oil priced exactly flat from 100 g, and a blossom floral with a small kilo step.

Where container candles go wrong

When a jar candle disappoints, the oil gets blamed first. It is usually the fourth most likely cause.

In general candle-making practice, a weak container candle is most often a wick problem, a cure problem or a load problem before it is an oil problem. A wick too small for the jar leaves a narrow pool that tunnels down the middle and releases little scent; a wick too large soots and burns the scent off fast. CSI does not publish wick sizes by jar diameter, so the only way to set the wick is a burn test in your own jar. Change one variable at a time and record every test.

Cure time is the second trap. A candle judged the day after pouring is not the candle the customer lights. Set a fixed cure period for your tests and never compare a two-day candle against a two-week one. Then look at load: if the oil is well under your wax's ceiling and the wick is right, try the next step up. Only after those three should you swap the oil. Strong fragrance oils for soy candles covers the same diagnosis for soy in detail, and large three-wick jars explains why wide jars need a different wick approach.

The last trap is range creep. Every new scent needs its own tester, labels, stock line and test log. A maker with twelve scents and two jar styles is running twenty-four products. Start narrow and let reorders tell you what to add. When you are ready to buy at volume, wholesale oils for jar candle businesses and bulk oils for container manufacturers cover what the listed packs can and cannot do.

Pick the family, weigh the jar, then price the candle. The oil you love is only the best oil if the jar it goes in still makes money.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would be convenient for us to call a long list of oils "best for containers". We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so this page names a shortlist to test, explains why each is on it, and tells you plainly that a first range needs four to six scents, not twenty.

Oil and wax prices on this page are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. The White Matte Glass Jar, Eco Candle Wicks and Wick Centering Device prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; the other container prices were pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Per-gram and per-candle figures are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them. Only the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g fill weight is published; every other fill is illustrative.

The 8% load, the illustrative fills and the per-candle base are working assumptions for comparison, not a recipe. Load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax maker's stated formulation maximums. Wick sizing is not published by jar size; set it by burn test. Frequently asked questions

Which fragrance oil is best for jar candles?
No single oil is best for every jar. Shortlist one oil per family — for example Lavender, British Rose, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Sandalwood, Vanilla Bean and Lemongrass and Lime — and test them in your own jar and wax. Lavender sits first in CSI's best-selling sort on the pull date.
How much fragrance oil do I add to a 200 g jar candle?
At an 8% load, 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. At 6% it is 12 g and at 10% it is 20 g. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%; stay within your wax's stated maximum.
What is the best wax for container candles in India?
For fragrance, the two waxes with a stated ceiling are the easiest to plan with: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (up to 13%, ₹599.00 / kg) and CSI 464 (up to 10%, ₹507.40 / kg). Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (₹650.00 / kg) is also listed for containers; ask for its stated maximum.
How much does it cost to make one jar candle?
With Lavender at 8%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and an Eco Thin C1 wick: ₹273.32 in a White Matte jar (illustrative 200 g fill) and ₹119.46 in the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin. Labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra.
Can I use the same fragrance oil in a tin and a glass jar?
Yes. The oil does not change; the quantity does. An 85 g tin takes 6.8 g of oil at 8% and a 200 g jar takes 16 g. The wick needs re-testing for each container because the diameter changes.
Does CSI sell a fragrance sample pack for jar candles?
No. CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack or discovery set. Build your own from 15 g testers — four oils cost ₹418.76 in the example above — and ask on WhatsApp if you want help choosing them.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The method — fill weight × load, then price per gram, then price per candle — applies to any supplier's fragrance oils and containers.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Oil = fill weight × load; wax = fill − oil. Fill weights are illustrative (200 g White Matte, 180 g Salsa, 100 g Yankee, 50 g mini glass jar) except the Golden Aluminium Tin's published 85 g. Per-candle material cost = oil at the 100 g rate + wax at ₹0.60/g (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 1 kg rate) + one Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 + one container; it excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax maker's stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits; no ceiling is quoted here for CSI 468 or Natural Soy Pearl Wax. Wick sizes by jar diameter are not published; set them by burn test. "Best-selling" refers to the collection's best-selling sort order on the pull date. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
