Commercial Fragrance · Best-Seller Protection
A candle business rarely runs out of everything. It runs out of the one scent customers came for. This page shows how to find those scents with an A-B-C ranking, protect them with a sealed reserve in a second pack size, and make sure your supplier has a second size too — worked on a ten-scent range.
70%
of all oil poured in the worked ten-scent range comes from its three A scents · a sealed dual-size reserve for A and B scents costs ₹18,335.96 once · worked range, not CSI sales data
Quick answers — read this first
How do I stop my best-selling candle fragrance running out? Rank scents by monthly grams (A-B-C), then give the A scents three protections: a reorder point, a sealed reserve in a smaller second size that is only opened once the reorder is confirmed, and a supplier that has them in stock at two sizes.

What is ABC analysis for candle fragrances? Sort scents by monthly usage. The few at the top that make up about 70% of grams are A; the next ~20% are B; the long tail is C. In the worked range, 3 scents are A, 3 are B and 4 are C.

What is dual-size buffering? Holding a best-seller in two pack sizes — the production size in use plus a sealed smaller pack as reserve — and checking that the supplier stocks it at two sizes, so one missing size never stops production. See dual-size buffering.

How much does a best-seller reserve cost? In the worked range, two weeks for each A scent and one week for each B scent, in sealed packs, costs ₹18,335.96 once. After that it is simply rotated. See the shopping list.
The short answer
ABC: Rank by monthly grams: A ≈ first 70% of usage (3 scents, 70.1%), B ≈ next 20% (3, 21.0%), C = the rest (4, 8.9%). Cross-check by value so an expensive B scent is not under-watched.
Protection: A: reorder point + 2-week sealed reserve in a second size + a pre-tested fallback · B: reorder point + 1-week reserve in 100 g · C: order on demand. Reorder points gives the trigger maths.
Supplier side: On 24 Sep 2026, 60 CSI oils were in stock at both 500 g and 1 kg, and 72 at both 100 g and 1 kg. Lead times are not published — ask in writing.

The worked range, ranked by monthly grams. The first three bars carry 70% of all oil poured; the last four carry 9%. That shape — a few heavy scents and a long tail — is typical, and it is why protection should be concentrated on the A scents rather than spread evenly. These are illustrative usage figures, not CSI sales data.
Straight answer
How can a candle business avoid running out of its best-selling fragrances?
Concentrate protection where the volume is. First, rank every scent by monthly grams: the few that make up about 70% of the oil you pour are your A scents, the next 20% are B, and the long tail is C. In the worked ten-scent range, three A scents carry 70.1% of all oil. Then give each A scent three layers. A reorder point so it is ordered on a level, not a date. A sealed reserve in a second, smaller size — two weeks of use in 500 g packs — opened only once the replacement order is confirmed. And a supplier second size: check that the oil is in stock at both its production size and a smaller one, so a missing kilo does not stop you. On CSI's 24 September 2026 pull, 60 oils were in stock at both 500 g and 1 kg. B scents get a one-week reserve in 100 g; C scents are ordered on demand. In the worked range the whole reserve costs ₹18,335.96 once. Lead times are not published, so size the reorder point on a written answer and your own records.
One line: protect the few scents that carry the business — twice, in two sizes — and let the long tail run lean.
An A-scent example with a real kilo saving: Eucalyptus Spearmint 1 kg at ₹3,068.00 (₹3.07 a gram), with the 500 g at ₹1,652.00 for a sealed reserve. It is in stock at every listed size.

Why best-sellers run out first

The scent you pour most is the one you check least, because it always seems to be there.

Stockouts do not happen evenly across a range. A slow scent bought by the kilo can sit for months; a best-seller bought by the kilo can vanish in a fortnight. The best-seller also has the most to lose. When it runs out, customers who came for it either wait, switch, or leave, and in the weeks before Diwali on 8 November a gap of a few days can mean a whole festive batch that never gets poured. Yet most makers apply one rule to every scent — one order a month, one kilo each — which gives the slow lines far more protection than they need and the best-sellers far less.

Put a number on it. In the worked range below, British Rose is poured at 2,400 g a month, about 560 g a week. One week without it is about 35 candles of 200 g at an 8% load that are not poured. The same week without Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon, at 100 g a month, is about 1.5 candles. Protection should follow that ratio. This page shows how to find which scents deserve it and what the protection looks like. For the always-stock list itself, see Which Candle Fragrance Oils Should I Always Keep in Stock?, and for the reasoning behind which scents tend to sell, Which Candle Fragrances Sell Best in India?.

Rank your scents A, B and C

ABC analysis is a simple ranking. List every scent with its monthly usage in grams, from your pour records rather than your memory. Sort from highest to lowest. Add a running total as a percentage of all oil poured. The scents that take the running total to roughly 70% are A; the next ones to roughly 90% are B; the rest are C. The cut-offs are conventions, not laws; adjust them so the A list is short enough to watch closely. Here is a worked ten-scent range. The monthly figures are illustrative, not CSI sales data:

Range 7,850 100%

Three scents — British Rose, Dark Vanilla and Eucalyptus Spearmint — make up 70.1% of all the oil poured. Three more make up the next 21.0%. The last four together are 8.9%. It is a shape you are likely to find in your own records too: a short list of heavy scents and a long tail of light ones.

The last column ranks the same scents by value: monthly grams × each oil's 1 kg price per gram. It usually agrees with the usage ranking at the top, but not always further down. Dark Vanilla, at ₹7.65 a gram, is first by value even though it is second by grams. Further down, Citrus Lemon, at ₹2.83 a gram, drops from 5th by grams to 7th by value, while Coffee Vanilla Tobacco, at ₹8.60 a gram, climbs from 7th to 6th. Rank by grams to decide stockout protection, because grams are what run out. Check the value ranking to decide where cash is tied up, and to spot an expensive scent that deserves more watching than its volume suggests.

The A list that was really a favourites list. A maker ranks scents by what they like making or what customers compliment, not by grams poured. The scent that quietly outsells everything gets no reserve, and runs out in October. Fix: rank from pour records only. Weigh, or count candles poured per scent, for a full month. Re-rank every quarter, and before the festive season; When Should Candle Businesses Order Fragrance Oils for Diwali Production? covers when to place the festive order itself.

Different rules for each class

Once the range is ranked, each class gets its own rule. The rules below are this page's working policy, and they slot into the monthly routine in Monthly Fragrance Oil Supplier for Candle Manufacturers in India; the reorder-point maths behind the first column is covered in How to Set Reorder Levels for Candle Fragrance Oils, and the weeks-of-cover policy in How Much Fragrance Oil Inventory Should a Candle Manufacturer Keep?.

Working policy by class · adjust to your own lead time and cash
How much protection each class gets
Class Ordering Reserve on your shelf Supplier side Review
A Reorder point, checked weekly Sealed 2 weeks of use in a smaller second size Must be in stock at production size and one smaller size Weekly weigh; re-rank quarterly
B Reorder point, checked fortnightly Sealed 1 week of use in 100 g Production size in stock; smaller size preferred Fortnightly
C Order on demand or with the monthly order None Any in-stock size Monthly

The rules deliberately spend protection unevenly. An A scent gets a reserve and a supplier check; a C scent gets neither, because running out of a C scent for a week costs a handful of candles and is easily fixed with a 100 g order. Most of the benefit comes from a short list. In the worked range, the reserve for three A scents and three B scents costs ₹18,335.96 once; spreading the same two-week reserve across all ten scents would tie up cash in stock that rarely matters.

Give each A scent a pre-tested fallback
For each A scent, keep one alternative you have already tested in your own wax and would be willing to pour if the A scent were unavailable for longer than your reserve. Test it now, when there is no pressure, not in the week it is needed. The fallback is your choice from your own tests; this page does not claim any two oils smell alike.

Dual-size buffering

One size of one scent is a single point of failure. Two sizes, on your shelf and at your supplier, is not.

Dual-size buffering has two halves. On your shelf: the production pack in use, plus a sealed reserve in a smaller size. The reserve is only opened once the replacement order has been confirmed, and it is replaced as soon as that order arrives. Using a smaller size for the reserve keeps it flexible (How to Buy Candle Fragrance Oils in Bulk Every Month shows which sizes carry no per-gram penalty): two 500 g packs can be opened one at a time, and a sealed pack stays in better condition than a half-used kilo. At your supplier: the scent should be in stock in at least two sizes, so that if the production size is missing on the day you order, you can buy the same grams in the other size and keep pouring. Here is the supplier-side check for the worked range on the 24 September 2026 pull:

Every scent in the range passes, but look at Chocolate Fudge: its 100 g was out of stock on the pull date. Its 50 g, 500 g and 1 kg were in stock, all at ₹3.96 a gram, so its B-class one-week reserve is built from 50 g packs instead. Some scents in the wider catalogue are not so lucky: Vetiver's 1 kg and Freshwater (BBW Inspired)'s 500 g and 1 kg were out of stock on the same day. Across the whole collection, 60 oils were in stock at both 500 g and 1 kg, 72 at both 100 g and 1 kg, and 47 at every size. An A scent should come from that group.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A supplier would happily sell you a two-month reserve of every scent. You do not need one. The C scents in this range need no reserve at all, and the B scents need a week in 100 g. The whole protection plan costs ₹18,335.96 once, and it is concentrated on three scents. If we sold you more than that, we would be selling you shelf space, not safety.
The reserve that became working stock. A maker builds a sealed reserve, opens it "just this once" to finish a batch without reordering, and never replaces it. The next delay hits with no reserve at all. Fix: the rule is that opening the reserve is the reorder. Label reserve packs clearly, keep them on a separate shelf, and log each opening with the order it triggered.

Here are three oils from the range showing the three dual-size situations: an A scent in stock at every size, a B scent whose 100 g is missing, and a B scent whose 500 g matches its kilo rate.

1
Fresh mint · A scent, every size in stock
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil
An A scent in the worked range. It is in stock from 15 g to 1 kg, its kilo is 13.3% cheaper per gram than its 100 g, and its 15 g is the cheapest tester in the collection at ₹68.44. Produce from the kilo; hold the reserve in 500 g at ₹3.30 a gram.

2
Gourmand · B scent, 100 g out of stock
Chocolate Fudge Fragrance Oil
A B scent whose 100 g was out of stock on the pull date. Because the 50 g, 500 g and 1 kg are all priced at ₹3.96 a gram, nothing is lost by building the reserve from 50 g packs. This is dual-size buffering doing its job: the missing size is simply routed around.
Pack Price Per gram Candles at 16 g

50 g ₹198.24 ₹3.96 3.12
100 g ₹396.48 ₹3.96 Out of stock

₹63.44 of oil per 200 g candle at any in-stock size above 15 g Buy Chocolate Fudge
3
Citrus herbal · B scent, 500 g matches kilo
Lemongrass and Lime Fragrance Oil
A B scent with an 11.9% kilo saving over its 100 g, and a 500 g at the same ₹5.20 a gram as the kilo. If it climbs into class A, its reserve should move from 100 g to 500 g packs, which would also lower its cost per candle.
Pack Price Per gram Candles at 16 g
15 g ₹116.52 ₹7.77 0.94

When a best-seller is running out anyway

Even with a reserve, a festive rush or a long delay can push an A scent toward zero. Decide the drill in advance, so nobody improvises under pressure:

1
Break the reserve and order in the same hourOpening the sealed reserve triggers the reorder immediately. Check the product page for the production size; if it is out of stock, order the same grams in the other in-stock size. Reliable Bulk Fragrance Oil Supplier for Candle Businesses shows how to price that route.
2
Ask about stock and dispatch in writingMessage CSI on WhatsApp with the scent, the grams and your pin code, and ask for stock confirmation and the dispatch time for that order. Use this message.
3
Ration by customer priorityPour committed orders first, retail stock second, new listings last. Tell wholesale buyers early if a date will slip.
4
Bring in the pre-tested fallback only if neededIf the gap will outlast the reserve, pour your pre-tested fallback, labelled honestly as a different scent. Never pour a substitute under the original name.
5
Afterwards, re-set the numbersRaise the reorder point or the reserve for that scent, record the actual lead time, and re-rank the range. A stockout that teaches you nothing will happen again.
The CSI principle
Protect the few, twice.
Rank by grams, not by favourites. Give the A scents a reorder point, a sealed reserve in a second size and a supplier that stocks them in two sizes. Let the C scents run lean. Protection spread evenly is protection wasted.
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, and the November–February wedding season follows. Festive pouring often reshuffles the A list, so re-rank from October's plan and build reserves before the rush. Stock checks at two sizes, quotes beyond the listed packs, GST invoicing and MSDS and IFRA documents are on WhatsApp.

Building the reserve

Here is the one-off order that builds the reserve for the worked range: sealed packs for the three A scents and three B scents, nothing for the C scents. After this order, the reserve is only topped up when it is used.

One-off reserve build · CSI live pricing 24 September 2026
Sealed reserve packs, priced
Item Class Packs Unit price Line total
British Rose Fragrance Oil A 3 × 500 g ₹1,593.00 ₹4,779.00
Dark Vanilla Fragrance Oil A 2 × 500 g ₹3,840.00 ₹7,680.00
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil A 2 × 500 g ₹1,652.00 ₹3,304.00
Chocolate Fudge Fragrance Oil B 4 × 50 g ₹198.24 ₹792.96
Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil B 2 × 100 g ₹300.00 ₹600.00
Lemongrass and Lime Fragrance Oil B 2 × 100 g ₹590.00 ₹1,180.00
Reserve total 4.10 kg ₹18,335.96

That is 4.10 kg of sealed oil, about 256 candles of 200 g at 8%, protecting the six scents that carry 91.1% of the range's pouring. It excludes the monthly production order itself, and wax, wicks, jars, labour, packaging, freight and GST. Store the reserve sealed, cool and away from light, rotate it into production when you replace it so it never sits for long, and log every opening. Wax for the same range can go on the order: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg and rated up to 10% fragrance load, the wax maker's stated formulation maximum. For putting all of it on one supplier, see How to Consolidate Fragrance Oil Purchasing With One Supplier.

Your range does not run out. One scent does — so protect that one twice.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's advice on stockouts usually amounts to "buy more". This page tells you to buy reserves for three or four scents and none for the long tail, and prints which of our own sizes were out of stock on the pull date so you can route around them.

Every oil price and stock status on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. ABC shares, value ranks, reserve sizes and costs are plain arithmetic on the stated usage figures and listed prices, shown so you can check them.

The ten-scent range and its monthly usage are illustrative, not CSI sales data. The 70% / 90% ABC cut-offs, 2-week and 1-week reserves and class rules are working assumptions. CSI does not publish lead times, payment terms or volume discounts. For stock checks at two sizes and dispatch times, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I avoid running out of stock of my best-selling candle scent?
Rank scents by monthly grams, and give the top few (A) a reorder point, a sealed two-week reserve in a smaller second size that is only opened once the reorder is confirmed, and a supplier that has them in stock at two sizes. Check stock before festive peaks.
What is ABC analysis for a candle business?
Sorting products by usage (or value) and splitting them into A (roughly the first 70% of volume), B (the next 20%) and C (the rest). Each class gets a different level of stock protection. The cut-offs are conventions you can adjust.
How much safety stock for best-selling fragrance oils?
This page uses two weeks of usage for A scents and one week for B scents, held as sealed packs, as a working policy. Size yours on your supplier's written lead time and your own delivery records. How to Set Reorder Levels for Candle Fragrance Oils gives the reorder-point maths.
What if the 1 kg of my best-selling fragrance is out of stock?
Buy the same grams in another in-stock size and ask about the restock on WhatsApp. That is why an A scent should come from oils stocked at two sizes; on the pull date, 60 CSI oils were in stock at both 500 g and 1 kg.
Which candle fragrances should I always keep in stock?
Your own A scents, from your own pour records. CSI's best-selling sort can suggest candidates, but your customers decide what you actually pour. Which Candle Fragrance Oils Should I Always Keep in Stock? covers building an always-stock list.
Can I substitute a different fragrance oil if mine runs out?
Only one you have already tested in your own wax, and only labelled as what it is. Test a fallback for each A scent in advance. This page does not claim any two oils smell alike.
Protect the few
Rank by grams. Reserve the A scents in a second size. Make sure your supplier stocks them twice.
93 fragrance oils, 47 in stock at every listed size and 60 at both 500 g and 1 kg on the pull date. Send us your A list and we will confirm stock at two sizes and the dispatch time for a reserve order.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Monthly usage figures for the ten-scent range are illustrative, not CSI sales data. ABC cut-offs of about 70% and 90% of cumulative grams are conventions. Value = monthly grams × 1 kg price per gram. Weekly usage = monthly grams ÷ (30 ÷ 7). Reserves: A scents 2 weeks in 500 g packs; B scents 1 week in 100 g packs, or 50 g where 100 g is out of stock; C scents none — working assumptions. Candle equivalents assume 200 g candles at an 8% load (16 g oil). CSI does not publish lead times, payment terms or volume discounts. No claim is made that any two oils smell alike.
