I Have ₹5,000 to Buy Fragrance Oils for My New Candle Business — Which Fragrances and Quantities Should I Start With?
Aktie
How many candles does ₹5,000 of oil make? The recommended order pours 68.75 candles of 200 g at an 8% load (16 g each), plus four test candles from the testers. A focused three-scent plan pours 93.75, but with only three scents.
Should I buy many 15 g bottles or fewer big ones? 15 g is for choosing, not producing. It carries a median 23.1% per-gram premium over the same oil at 100 g. Spend most of the budget at 100 g and above, and keep 15 g for scents you have not tested yet.
Does ₹5,000 cover wax and jars too? Only for a small first batch. An all-in plan with five oils at 50 g, 3 kg of wax, wicks, 15 jars, a scale and a thermometer costs ₹4,898.80 and pours 15 candles. See the all-in version.
Three ways to spend ₹5,000
There are three honest shapes for a ₹5,000 fragrance order. Wide spends heavily on 15 g testers so you can smell many scents in your own wax. Focused puts everything into three oils at 500 g and pours the most candles. Balanced sits between them: one lead scent bought bigger, a range of six at 100 g and a handful of testers for the next round. Each plan below is priced from CSI's live listings and totals under ₹5,000.
| Plan | Oils | Oil bought | Total | Average ₹/g | Candles | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · Wide: 15 testers + 7 × 100 g | 22 | 925 g | ₹4,697.72 | ₹5.08 | 43.75 + 15 tests | Choosing, not selling |
| B · Balanced (recommended) | 11 | 1,160 g | ₹4,904.56 | ₹4.23 | 68.75 + 4 tests | A launch with a small range |
| C · Focused: 3 × 500 g | 3 | 1,500 g | ₹4,974.00 | ₹3.32 | 93.75 | A proven, narrow range |
Read the average price per gram column first. The wide plan pays ₹5.08 a gram on average because fifteen of its bottles are 15 g testers. The focused plan pays ₹3.32 because it buys three low-cost oils at 500 g, where all three are genuinely cheaper per gram than at 100 g. The balanced plan lands at ₹4.23. That is not the cheapest gram on the page, and it does not need to be. It buys seven sellable scents instead of three, and it pours 68.75 candles instead of 43.75.
Plan A · Wide — for choosing, not selling
| Line | Oils | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 15 testers at 15 g | Eucalyptus Spearmint, Peach Melon Berry, Roasted Coconut, Apple Cinnamon, Blue Ocean, Cucumber Green Tea, Mango Coconut, Woody Oud, Fallen Leaves, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Autumn, Spicy Raspberry, Saffron Cedarwood, Bergamot Amber, Chocolate Fudge | ₹1,402.84 |
| 7 production oils at 100 g | Lavender, British Rose, Citrus Lemon, Roasted Coffee, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Dark Vanilla | ₹3,294.88 |
| Total | 925 g of oil | ₹4,697.72 |
This plan makes sense if you have no idea yet what your brand smells like. Fifteen testers give fifteen test candles, and the seven 100 g bottles give 43.75 sellable candles in seven safe profiles. The problem is that the testers take ₹1,402.84 and produce nothing you can sell. For a structured version of this approach with a proper burn protocol, read testing 20 fragrances before launch. Most new brands are better off testing fewer scents properly than more scents quickly.
Plan C · Focused — for a range you already know
British Rose, Citrus Lemon and Jasmine at 500 g each come to ₹4,974.00 for 1.5 kg of oil, enough for 93.75 candles. All three are value oils: ₹3.19, ₹2.84 and ₹3.92 a gram at 500 g. This is the plan for someone who has already tested and sold, perhaps from a hobby stage, and knows their customers want these three profiles. For a brand with no sales history it is a bet on three scents, and a three-scent shelf is thin for gifting or markets.
The recommended order, line by line
The balanced plan is built around one question: which scents will a new Indian candle customer recognise and buy again? It covers a rose, a jasmine, a sandalwood, a coffee, a vanilla, a lavender and a lemon. That spread works for gifting, home fragrance and festive tables without anything too niche. The lead scent is British Rose, chosen because it is low-cost and cheaper per gram at 500 g. The testers are four more profiles you can try in your own wax before the second order.
| Oil | Size | Price | ₹/g | Candles at 16 g | Oil per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | 500 g | ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19 | 31.25 | ₹50.98 |
| Roasted Coffee | 100 g | ₹390.00 | ₹3.90 | 6.25 | ₹62.40 |
| Jasmine | 100 g | ₹430.00 | ₹4.30 | 6.25 | ₹68.80 |
| Sandalwood | 100 g | ₹502.68 | ₹5.03 | 6.25 | ₹80.43 |
| Lavender | 100 g | ₹540.00 | ₹5.40 | 6.25 | ₹86.40 |
| Citrus Lemon | 100 g | ₹300.00 | ₹3.00 | 6.25 | ₹48.00 |
| Dark Vanilla | 100 g | ₹790.00 | ₹7.90 | 6.25 | ₹126.40 |
| Blue Ocean (tester) | 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots | — |
| Apple Cinnamon (tester) | 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots | — |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint (tester) | 15 g | ₹68.44 | ₹4.56 | 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots | — |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom (tester) | 15 g | ₹104.00 | ₹6.93 | 1 test candle at 7.5% or 3 × 50 g pots | — |
| Total | 1,160 g | ₹4,904.56 | ₹4.23 avg | 68.75 production |
Three numbers are worth noting. First, the oil cost per candle runs from ₹48.00 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹126.40 (Dark Vanilla). That spread matters more than any bottle price when you set selling prices. Second, the four testers cost ₹358.88 together, less than one 100 g of Dark Vanilla, and they decide your second order. Third, ₹95.44 stays unspent. Keep it. Prices and stock move, and a budget planned to the last rupee breaks the first time one size is out.
Swapping is easy, and you should swap to fit your brand. Keep the shape: one lead at 500 g, around six at 100 g, three or four testers. If you want a more Indian floral range, replace Lavender with Raat Ki Rani (₹700.00 for 100 g). For a warmer range, replace Citrus Lemon with Cinnamon Vanilla (₹483.80). Each swap moves the total by the price difference, so recheck it stays under ₹5,000. The best 5 fragrance oils to start a candle business and which fragrance oils to buy first go deeper on the scent choice itself.
How many candles it pours
At the default working load of 8% in a 200 g candle, each candle takes 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. The recommended order has 1,100 g of production oil, so it pours 68.75 candles. The testers are kept apart: each 15 g scents one 187.5 g candle at 8%, or three 50 g test pots at 8% with 3 g spare. Change the load and the yield changes with it.
| Load | Oil per candle | Candles from all production oil | From the 500 g lead | From each 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6% | 12 g | 91.67 | 41.67 | 8.33 |
| 8% | 16 g | 68.75 | 31.25 | 6.25 |
| 10% | 20 g | 55.00 | 25.00 | 5.00 |
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load and CSI 464 up to 10%; those are the wax maker's stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Starting at 8% is sensible. Some oils will throw well at 6% in your wax, which stretches the budget by a third. Others will need 10%. Test before you decide, and do not push load to cover a wick that is too small. How much fragrance oil for 100 candles shows the quantity maths for a bigger first run.
If ₹5,000 must cover everything
Many first budgets are not oil-only. If ₹5,000 must also pay for wax, wicks, jars and the two tools you cannot skip, the plan shrinks to a first batch. Here is a fully priced version: five scents at 50 g, three candles each, fifteen 200 g candles in total. The fixed material cost of each candle before oil is ₹186.92 with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar.
| Item | Pack | Cost | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | 50 g | ₹270.00 | 3 candles (48 g) + 2 g spare |
| British Rose | 50 g | ₹212.40 | 3 candles (48 g) + 2 g spare |
| Roasted Coffee | 50 g | ₹230.00 | 3 candles (48 g) + 2 g spare |
| Jasmine | 50 g | ₹230.00 | 3 candles (48 g) + 2 g spare |
| Sandalwood | 50 g | ₹271.40 | 3 candles (48 g) + 2 g spare |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 3 × 1 kg | ₹1,797.00 | 2,760 g needed for 15 × 184 g |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 2 × pack of 10 | ₹118.00 | 15 used, 5 for test burns |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 3 × pack of 5 | ₹1,062.00 | 15 jars |
| Weighing Scale + Pen Thermometer | 1 each | ₹708.00 | Bought once |
| Total | ₹4,898.80 | ₹101.20 left |
This is a starter run, not a stock-up. It proves your process, gives you fifteen candles to sell or sample, and leaves ₹101.20 for labels or a second wax order. The 50 g size is the right choice here because it avoids the 15 g premium. For many oils the 50 g is already at the 100 g rate (Lavender is ₹5.40/g at both), though value oils such as British Rose still get cheaper at 100 g (₹4.25 against ₹3.42), which is why the production plan above uses 100 g. The wax line is the one to watch: 3 kg is 240 g more than fifteen candles need, which covers pour loss and a test burn. Costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST.
What the second order looks like
The first order is a question. The second order is the answer. Once the first 60 or so candles have sold, you will know which scents moved, which were complimented and which sat on the shelf. That is when the budget should shift.
Here are the three oils that do the most work in the recommended order, with every size priced so you can plan the step up.

Where ₹5,000 usually goes wrong
Most first budgets fail in one of four ways. The first is buying on name alone: ordering the dearest inspired-by oils because they sound premium, then discovering a 50 g of Club De Nuit Intense Inspired costs ₹1,203.00, which is ₹384.96 of oil in every candle. Premium oils belong in a premium range, costed first. Fragrance oils for a premium candle brand explains how to price for them.
The second is buying one kilo of a single scent. It feels professional, but at listed prices it rarely saves money, and it leaves you with a one-scent shelf. The third is forgetting the non-oil costs; the per-candle base of wax, wick and jar in our example is ₹186.92, which is more than the fragrance in most of these candles. The fourth is not keeping records. Write down the oil, the load, the wax and the wick for every test candle, or the second order becomes guesswork.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The easy advice for us would be to steer a ₹5,000 budget into a couple of kilo bottles. Our own listed prices show that rarely saves money on an unproven scent, so this page recommends 100 g breadth and names the one oil in the plan where buying bigger is genuinely cheaper.
Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every line in every plan was in stock on the pull date. Totals, per-gram figures and candle counts are plain arithmetic on those prices and are shown to two decimals so you can check them.
The 200 g candle, the 8% load and the scent choices are working assumptions for planning, not a recipe or a sales forecast. Your wax, jar, load and customers decide your real figures. For a check of your own list, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
