What Should I Check on the SDS and Technical Data Sheet Before Buying a Reed Diffuser Base for Commercial Manufacturing?
Aktie
Does CSI publish its bases' composition or flash point? No. The pages give families, a 10–30% range and a 24–48 h rest. Ask on WhatsApp whether an SDS or technical data sheet is available.
What can I check myself? Density (weigh 100 ml), appearance and odour (a base-only blank), and clarity and performance with your oil. Not flash point — trust the SDS for that.
What does the verification round cost? ₹2,880.80 in CSI materials (₹3,534.80 with beaker and scale). See the kit.
What the documents can tell you — and what they cannot
A safety data sheet (SDS, sometimes still called an MSDS) is the document a supplier prepares to describe a chemical product's hazards and how to handle it. In most of the world it follows a 16-section format set out under the Globally Harmonised System (GHS), and it is the format to expect from suppliers in India too. A technical data sheet (TDS) is a different, less standardised document: a product specification written for formulators, which may give typical properties, a recommended use level, compatibility notes, storage conditions and shelf life. Some suppliers have both, some only an SDS, and many small-format products have neither readily to hand.
For a reed diffuser base, the two documents answer different questions. The SDS answers is it safe to store, use, label and ship, and what am I obliged to tell my customers? The TDS, where one exists, answers what is it and how is it meant to be used? Neither answers the question that decides whether your product sells: does this base, with my oil, at my load, in my bottle, stay clear and fill a room for as long as I promise? That one only a test answers. So the straight answer is: read nine of the SDS's sixteen sections before you buy — identification, hazards, composition, fire-fighting, handling and storage, physical and chemical properties, stability, transport and the revision date — read the TDS for recommended load, storage and shelf life if one exists, then verify the two properties you can measure at home and test the rest with your oil.
Be clear about what CSI's product pages do and do not give you. The five in-stock CSI reed diffuser base pages describe what each base is for, a 10–30% fragrance range, a 24–48 hour rest and how to flip reeds. They do not publish composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life, and we will not guess at any of them. Ask CSI on WhatsApp whether an SDS or technical data sheet is available for the base you are considering; we will not promise that one exists for every base. If a document is not available, the house specification sheet at the end of this page is how you replace it with your own measured record.
| Question | SDS | TDS (if one exists) | CSI product page | Your own test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Is it flammable? How must it be stored? | Yes — sections 2, 5, 7 | Sometimes | Not stated | — |
| What is in it? | Hazardous ingredients, often as ranges — section 3 | Sometimes a description | Not published | — |
| Density, flash point, appearance, odour | Usually — section 9 | Often | Not published | Density and look/smell: yes |
| Can it be shipped by courier? | Section 14 (transport class) | Rarely | Not stated | Ask your courier |
| Recommended fragrance load | No | Often | Yes — 10–30% | Clarity ladder |
| Shelf life and storage | Section 7 storage; sometimes 10 | Often | Not stated | Retained sample |
| Will my diffuser perform? | No | No | Positioning only | Only this |
The SDS checklist, section by section
Read the SDS of the base itself, and separately the SDS of each fragrance oil you will use with it: your finished diffuser is a mixture of both, and its hazards and labelling depend on the two together. The checklist below is the reading order we suggest for a reed diffuser base. It is general guidance for a small manufacturer, not legal advice; the rules that apply to your labels, storage and shipping depend on where and how you sell.
| Section | Look for | Why it matters for a diffuser maker | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Identification | Exact product name; supplier name and contact; emergency number | It must be the SDS for the base you are buying, not a similar one | ● |
| 2 Hazards | Classification (e.g. flammable liquid, irritant), pictograms, hazard and precautionary statements | What your workshop must manage and what your finished labels may need to say | ● |
| 3 Composition | Hazardous ingredients, often with CAS numbers and concentration ranges | Often the only composition you will get; may be partial for trade-secret reasons | ● |
| 4 First aid | Skin, eye, ingestion advice | Goes on your workshop wall | ○ |
| 5 Fire-fighting | Suitable extinguishing media; special hazards | Tells you whether the base adds a fire risk to your storeroom | ● |
| 6 Accidental release | Spill handling | Your spill kit | ○ |
| 7 Handling and storage | Storage temperature, ventilation, incompatible materials, container type | Where you can keep 5 or 25 kg of it safely | ● |
| 8 Exposure controls | Ventilation and protective equipment | Gloves and ventilation when blending | ○ |
| 9 Physical and chemical properties | Appearance, odour, density or relative density, flash point, viscosity, solubility | The numbers product pages rarely give; density converts ml to g | ● |
| 10 Stability and reactivity | Conditions to avoid (heat, light); incompatible materials | Whether sunny shelves or warm vans are a problem | ● |
| 11–13 Toxicology, ecology, disposal | Health effects; environmental notes; disposal route | Customer safety wording; how you dispose of failed batches | ○ |
| 14 Transport | UN number, transport hazard class, packing group — or "not regulated" | Whether your courier will carry finished diffusers, and how | ● |
| 15 Regulatory | Regulations the supplier cites | A starting point; check the rules for your own market | ○ |
| 16 Other | Revision date and version | An SDS several years old may not match today's product — ask for the current one | ● |
The technical data sheet, and what replaces it if there is none
A TDS for a diffuser base, when a supplier has one, typically lists appearance, odour, density or specific gravity at a stated temperature, sometimes viscosity, a recommended fragrance range, compatibility notes, storage conditions and shelf life. Treat each figure as the supplier's typical value, not a guarantee for every lot. The useful thing about a TDS is that it gives you something to check against: if the TDS says a base weighs a certain amount per millilitre and the bottle in front of you weighs noticeably more or less, you have learned something before you blended a batch.
If there is no TDS, the product page is the nearest thing, and for CSI's bases it gives you the intended families, the 10–30% range, the 24–48 hour rest, and reed-flipping advice. Everything else you measure and write down yourself, which is exactly what a careful small manufacturer should do anyway. The house specification sheet below is the template: it turns your first verification round into the reference every later delivery is checked against. A reed diffuser quality-control checklist extends it to the finished product, and choosing a base supplier for documentation and repeat availability covers what to expect from a supplier over time.

The verification round: measure what you can, test what matters
Two properties on an SDS or TDS are easy to check at home. Density: weigh 100 ml of the base in a clean, tared container — the 100 ml Silicon Measuring Beaker on the Weighing Scale is enough for a working figure; check the scale's display steps, which are not published. Appearance and odour: fill one bottle with base only and look at it against white and black cards, then smell it blind beside your current base. Neither replaces the SDS, and you cannot check a flash point at home — trust the document for that. But if your weighed 100 ml or your blank disagrees with the document, ask before you buy in quantity.
| Your 100 ml weighs | Density | ₹ per g of base | Bottles per 500 ml | Liquid per bottle with Cinnamon Vanilla (1 kg rate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 95.0 g | 0.95 g/ml | ₹2.31 | 5.65 | ₹290.00 |
| 100.0 g | 1.00 g/ml | ₹2.20 | 5.95 | ₹280.28 |
| 105.0 g | 1.05 g/ml | ₹2.09 | 6.25 | ₹271.49 |
The rows are examples to show the effect, not CSI figures: a base that weighs 95 g per 100 ml costs ₹2.31 a gram and fills 5.65 of these bottles per 500 ml; at 105 g it costs ₹2.09 a gram and fills 6.25. Because your recipe is by weight, your density figure decides how many 500 ml bottles a production run needs. Then the performance round: three reeded bottles at your production load, one capped bottle to check the closure over a week, and the blank — weighed on a schedule and scored blind. Comparing two bases on evaporation, throw, clarity, reeds and cost is the full method if you are choosing between bases rather than verifying one.
The priced verification kit
Listed, in-stock CSI packs only, with a 5% liquid allowance. The base need is four bottles of blend plus the blank — 463.1 g — which one 500 ml of Depth covers if your Depth weighs at least 0.926 g per ml (that is, 92.6 g per 100 ml). The example oil is Cinnamon Vanilla, a sweet-spicy gourmand of the kind Depth's page says it "stabilises"; use the oil you will sell.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Depth Base | 463.1 g | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,099.00 | You are verifying a different base |
| Cinnamon Vanilla (example oil) | 88.2 g | 1 × 100 g | ₹483.80 | You use your own oil (better) |
| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle, 120 ml | 5 bottles | 1 × pack of 10 | ₹1,062.00 | You test in your own bottle |
| Fiber Diffuser Reeds (Black) | 3 × 7 = 21 | 1 × pack of 25 | ₹236.00 | You hold reeds |
| CSI verification kit | ₹2,880.80 | |||
| Silicon Measuring Beaker 100 ml + Weighing Scale | 1 each | 1 + 1 | ₹654.00 | You own a measuring vessel and scale |
| With beaker and scale | ₹3,534.80 |
Against a commercial order of, for example, 10 × 500 ml of Depth — ₹10,990.00 at the listed price — the verification kit is about 26.2% of the spend, and its 500 ml of base is the first bottle of that order. Five of the ten bottles in the pack remain for a second oil or a second base. If you are verifying Pure Performance Base instead, its 100 g size makes the round cheaper; the other three bases are the same ₹1,099.00 as Depth, and Longevity Base is ₹1,296.00.
The decision rule
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| No SDS is available and your courier, storeroom or buyer needs one | A documentation gap you cannot work around | Don't buy yet for that channel; choose a base with documents |
| SDS section 14 shows a transport class your courier refuses | Shipping problem, whatever the smell | Ask the courier in writing; plan hand delivery or a different base |
| SDS revision date is old, or the product name differs | Possibly the wrong or outdated document | Ask for the current SDS for the exact product |
| Your 100 ml weighs very differently from the SDS/TDS figure | Lot or document mismatch | Ask before ordering; recompute bottles per 500 ml |
| Blank is hazy, coloured or smells off | The base itself | Do not order; ask CSI on WhatsApp |
| Documents in order; blend clear at 48 h and 7 days; room score passes | Verified for this oil and load | Order Depth in 500 ml (₹1,099.00); file the house spec sheet |
Keep the file and the sheet together, and re-open both when anything changes: a new SDS version, a new lot of base, a new oil, a new load. If the base you are documenting is replacing one you already sell, testing a new base supplier before switching your bestsellers sets out the side-by-side; if flammability is the concern that brought you here, perfumer's alcohol as a base walks through the flammability, packaging and courier questions in detail. Clarity tests before a 5 kg order goes deeper on compatibility, and maximum fragrance percentage and IFRA 10A covers the oil's paperwork. The section's pillar is which reed diffuser base to buy in India; its capstone, the commercial base selection framework, puts safety alongside compatibility, flow, evaporation and cost.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. A supplier could wave the question away with "all documents available". This page says plainly that CSI's base pages publish no composition, density, flash point or shelf life, that we will not promise an SDS exists for every base, and that if you need one we cannot provide, you should buy a base for which you can get it.
Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, base-pack count, per-bottle liquid cost, kit total and cost per day on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; density and grams-per-day figures are labelled examples, never CSI specifications.
Bottle counts per arm, the clarity checkpoints, the weighing schedule, the room-scoring scale and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 105 g fill, the 20% load, the 95–105 g weighings, the 10-bottle order and the 7–14 day round are labelled examples you replace. The SDS checklist is general guidance, not legal advice. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Example fill 105 g per 120 ml bottle at 20% = 21 g oil + 84 g base. Example weighings of 100 ml: 95, 100 and 105 g (0.95–1.05 g per ml); one 500 ml of Depth covers the round at 0.926 g per ml or more. Working practices: 3 reeded bottles with 7 reeds, 1 capped closure bottle, 1 base-only blank, 5% liquid allowance, clarity at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h and 7 days, weights on days 0, 1, 3, 7 (and 14), blind scoring on days 1 and 7. Labelled example: a 10 × 500 ml order. Production-rate liquid cost uses the oil's 1 kg rate. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, start at 10%, maximum 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours, flip reeds after the first hour; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", 10–30%, "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", allow 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families, 10–30%; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "slow diffusion", 10–30%; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand, 10–30%; all five say rest 24–48 hours and describe themselves as crystal clear. Fibre reed page: length 20.3 cm; 6–8 reeds for a standard 50–100 ml bottle, more for stronger and faster diffusion, fewer for subtler and longer-lasting. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point, shelf life or SDS figure for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; and no IFRA limit for any oil. Any density on this page is a labelled example the reader replaces with a weighed figure; any g/day is a labelled example the reader replaces with a measured one. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
