Which Fragrances to Buy · Small Brand
A small candle brand has two limits a large one does not: a tight budget per candle and a small number of sales to spread across its scents. Choose oils that fit both. This page sets a fragrance cost ceiling from a target material cost, holds the range to four SKUs, and shows which CSI oils pass.
₹63.08
fragrance ceiling per 200 g candle for a ₹250.00 material-cost target, after ₹186.92 of wax, wick and jar · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What are the best fragrance oils for a small candle brand? Oils that fit a per-candle cost ceiling and cover four families. With a ₹250.00 material-cost target the ceiling is ₹63.08 of oil per 200 g candle, and a four-SKU range that fits is British Rose, Cucumber Green Tea, Royal Apricot and Roasted Coffee, averaging ₹58.08 at 100 g prices.

How many fragrances should a small candle brand have? Four, for most. At 40 candles a month, four scents sell 10 each, so every 100 g bottle is used within a month. At eight scents, bottles sit open for over a month each. See the SKU maths.

How do I set a fragrance budget per candle? Start from the material cost you can afford per candle, subtract wax, wick and jar (₹186.92 for a 200 g soy candle in a White Matte Glass Jar), and what is left is your fragrance ceiling. Divide by 16 g for a ceiling per gram: ₹3.94 here.

Do I need to buy fragrance oil in bulk as a small brand? No. CSI's listed store has no minimum order beyond the smallest pack. For many value oils, 50 g and 100 g cost the same per gram, so small packs cost you nothing extra. Low MOQ Fragrance Oils for Small Candle Businesses covers low-MOQ buying in detail.
The short answer
Ceiling: ₹250.00 target material cost − ₹186.92 base = ₹63.08 of oil per 200 g candle = ₹3.94 a gram. 10 in-stock oils qualify at 100 g on 24 September 2026.
Four SKUs: British Rose (floral) · Cucumber Green Tea (fresh) · Royal Apricot (fruity) · Roasted Coffee (gourmand). ₹54.75 to ₹62.40 of oil per candle.
First month: Tests ₹463.84 · oil for 40 candles ₹2,904.04 · with wax, wicks and jars ₹11,286.88.
Oils under a ₹63.08 fragrance ceiling — 16 g in a 200 g candle at 100 g prices Ceiling = ₹250.00 target material cost − ₹186.92 wax, wick and jar. 10 in-stock oils qualify at 100 g on 24 Sep 2026. Citrus Lemon ₹48.00 · Citrus Grapefruit Oleo ₹54.56 · Citrus British Rose ₹54.75 · Floral Cucumber Green Tea ₹56.45 · Fresh / herbal Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹56.64 · Fresh / herbal Royal Apricot ₹58.72 · Fruity Fresh Strawberries ₹60.42 · Fruity Orchard Pear ₹60.80 · Fruity Pomegranate Splash (2nd listing) ₹61.44 · Fruity Roasted Coffee ₹62.40 · Gourmand ceiling ₹63.08
Every bar is an oil in stock at 100 g on the pull date whose fragrance cost fits under the dashed ceiling. The ceiling comes from your target, not from us: raise the target material cost to ₹260.00 and the ceiling rises to ₹73.08, which lets in Jasmine, Gardenia and Peach Melon Berry.
Straight answer
What are the best fragrance oils for a small candle brand?
The best oils for a small brand are the ones that fit two limits. The first is cost per candle. Decide the material cost you can carry — say ₹250.00 for a 200 g soy candle — subtract wax, wick and jar (₹186.92 with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar), and the rest, ₹63.08, is your fragrance ceiling: ₹3.94 a gram at an 8% load. On 24 September 2026, 10 CSI oils in stock at 100 g fit under it. The second limit is volume. A small brand selling around 40 candles a month should hold four SKUs, so each 100 g bottle is used within a month. Four oils that fit both limits and cover four families are British Rose, Cucumber Green Tea, Royal Apricot and Roasted Coffee, averaging ₹58.08 of oil per candle. Buy them small: for Cucumber Green Tea and Royal Apricot the 50 g costs the same per gram as the 100 g.
One line: a cost ceiling and a SKU count — choose oils that fit both, and buy them small.
Royal Apricot at ₹183.00 for 50 g is priced like a production size: ₹3.66 a gram at 50 g, ₹3.67 at 100 g. For a small brand it puts ₹58.72 of fragrance into a 200 g candle without a single bulk purchase.

Set the ceiling first

A big brand can carry one expensive scent on the strength of the others. A small brand's four candles each have to pay their own way.

The mistake small brands make is choosing scents first and costing them afterwards. By then the favourite is on the label and the margin is what is left. Reverse it. Decide what one candle can cost you in materials, subtract the parts that do not change with the scent, and the remainder is the most you can spend on fragrance. Only oils under that line are candidates.

From a target material cost to a fragrance ceiling · 200 g candle at 8% (16 g oil, 184 g wax)
Working out your ceiling
Target material cost Base (wax, wick, jar) Fragrance ceiling per candle Ceiling per gram In-stock oils that fit at 100 g
₹240.00 ₹186.92 ₹53.08 ₹3.32 1
₹250.00 ₹186.92 ₹63.08 ₹3.94 10
₹260.00 ₹186.92 ₹73.08 ₹4.57 17
₹270.00 ₹186.92 ₹83.08 ₹5.19 26

The base is 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo (₹110.22), an Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 at ₹5.90 and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80. Material cost here excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST, which you add on top when you set a selling price. Each ₹10.00 added to your target lets in several more oils. This page uses ₹250.00, which leaves ₹63.08 for fragrance — a Value-to-Core budget.

Lower the base before you lower the fragrance
If your ceiling is too tight, look at the base first. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 costs ₹507.40 a kilo against ₹599.00 for the chunks, which saves ₹16.85 of wax in each 200 g candle and moves your ceiling up by the same amount. It is rated up to 10% fragrance load, enough for an 8% working load. Test it before you switch.

Which oils fit

At a ₹63.08 ceiling, 10 oils in stock at 100 g on the pull date qualify. The table gives each with its family, its best-selling sort position, and whether its 50 g costs the same per gram — which matters to a brand that buys small.

Every main family except woody is represented. Florals are thin: British Rose is the only floral under the ceiling at 100 g, with Jasmine just above it. Fruity oils are plentiful and cheap, which is why many small brands lean on them. If your brand needs a woody scent, Woody Oud at ₹72.50 is the nearest, and the tip above shows how to make room for it.

Two listings, two prices. Pomegranate Splash appears twice in the collection. The first listing sells 50 g for ₹249.00 (₹4.98 a gram); the second sells 50 g for ₹192.00 (₹3.84 a gram). At 100 g they are ₹399.00 and ₹384.00. We list both, and we would rather you knew: check both product pages before you buy, and ask on WhatsApp if you want to confirm they are the same oil.

Why four SKUs

Every scent you add splits the same sales into a smaller share. At some point the bottle outlives the season.

A 100 g bottle scents 6.25 candles at 16 g each. How quickly it empties depends on how many candles of that scent you sell. For a small brand selling about 40 candles a month — an illustrative figure, not a benchmark — the table shows what happens as the range grows. The cash column is one 100 g bottle of each scent at the four-SKU average bottle price.

40 candles a month, spread evenly · 100 g bottle = 6.25 candles
SKU count against bottle life
SKUs Candles per SKU per month One 100 g lasts Oil on the shelf (one 100 g each) Bottles used within a month?
3 13.3 0.47 months ₹1,089.01 Yes
4 10 0.62 months ₹1,452.02 Yes
5 8 0.78 months ₹1,815.03 Yes
6 6.7 0.94 months ₹2,178.03 Yes
8 5 1.25 months ₹2,904.04 Borderline
10 4 1.56 months ₹3,630.05 No — bottles sit open

At four SKUs, each scent sells ten candles a month and a 100 g bottle lasts under three weeks, so every reorder is of fresh oil and nothing sits open. At eight or ten, bottles last one to two months each, you are managing eight or ten reorders, and every new scent adds its own test cost. The sales do not grow just because the range does. Four is not a rule; it is where the maths is kind to a small brand. If your sales are larger, Best 10 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business covers a ten-scent range.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell more oil to a brand with ten scents than to a brand with four. A small brand with ten scents spends more on testers, holds more open bottles and sells no more candles. Keep four until one of them is selling so well you are reordering it weekly — then add a fifth.

The four, priced

Four families, four oils, all under the ₹63.08 ceiling at 100 g. Two of them — Cucumber Green Tea and Royal Apricot — are priced flat from 50 g, so you can buy them in 50 g packs at no extra cost per gram.

Fruity · Value-to-Core · flat from 50 g
Royal Apricot Fragrance Oil
A soft, sunny fruit that fits a small brand's budget almost exactly: ₹58.72 of oil per candle. It has no 15 g size, so the 50 g at ₹183.00 is both your tester and your production size, at the same per-gram rate as the 100 g and the kilo.

Grapefruit Oleo Fragrance Oil
A grapefruit citrus priced at ₹3.41 a gram, one of the lowest in the collection. On the pull date only the 100 g was in stock; the 50 g and 1 kg were out. For a small brand that buys 100 g at a time that is enough — just do not plan a bulk order on it without checking first.

Buying small without paying more

Small brands are told they pay more because they buy less. On CSI's listed prices that is true only at the 15 g tester, which carries a median 23.1% premium per gram over the same oil's 100 g. From 50 g up, most oils are priced linearly: across the catalogue, 52 of 86 oils listing both a 50 g and a 100 g price them within 1% per gram. So the rule for a small brand is simple: test in 15 g, then buy 50 g or 100 g as your sales need, and pay the same rate as a brand buying kilos for many oils.

Per gram by size for the four · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Where the small-pack premium sits
Oil 15 g 50 g 100 g 1 kg Small-brand buy
British Rose ₹6.29 ₹4.25 ₹3.42 ₹3.07 100 g (50 g is 24% dearer per gram)
Cucumber Green Tea ₹6.21 ₹3.53 ₹3.53 ₹3.33 50 g or 100 g — same rate
Royal Apricot Not listed ₹3.66 ₹3.67 ₹3.67 50 g or 100 g — same rate
Roasted Coffee ₹6.21 ₹4.60 ₹3.90 ₹3.74 100 g (50 g is 18% dearer per gram)

British Rose and Roasted Coffee are the two where 100 g is clearly the better small-brand size. Both are cheaper again at 1 kg, but a kilo of either scents 62.5 candles — over six months of one SKU at ten candles a month. That is not a small brand's buy yet. The CSI principle
Fit the oil to the candle, not the candle to the oil.
A small brand survives on margin and focus. Set the fragrance ceiling from the price your customers will pay, hold the range to the number of scents your sales can keep fresh, and choose oils that fit inside both lines.

When the brand grows past four, the next steps are the best 5 fragrance oils and which oils to keep in stock. If your brand is aimed at a higher price point from the start, Best Fragrance Oils for a Premium Candle Brand is the page for you. For a budget set in rupees rather than per candle, see Best Candle Fragrance Oils Under ₹500 and I Have ₹5,000 to Buy Fragrance Oils for My New Candle Business — Which Fragrances and Quantities Should I Start With?.

Four scents that each sell ten candles a month beat ten scents that each sell four.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page tells a small brand to keep fewer scents and buy smaller packs, which is not the advice that sells the most oil. It also points out a place where our own two listings of one oil are priced differently.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Stock status and sort positions are as listed on that date; CSI publishes no unit sales. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Ceilings, per-gram and per-candle figures are plain arithmetic on the listed prices.

The ₹250.00 target, the 40-candles-a-month volume and the four-SKU range are working assumptions for illustration. Your prices and sales decide your real ceiling and range. For small-brand help, stock checks, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What are the cheapest good fragrance oils for a small candle business?
By oil per 200 g candle at 100 g prices: Citrus Lemon ₹48.00, Grapefruit Oleo ₹54.56, British Rose ₹54.75, Cucumber Green Tea ₹56.45 and Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹56.64. Cheap and good are both tested in your own wax; start with 15 g.
How many scents should a small candle brand start with?
Four is a sensible number for a brand selling around 40 candles a month: each scent sells about ten, and each 100 g bottle is used within a month. Add a fifth when one scent is outselling its bottle.
How much fragrance oil cost per candle is too much?
Whatever pushes your material cost past what your selling price can carry. Work it backwards: target material cost minus wax, wick and jar. At a ₹250.00 target for a 200 g candle, anything over ₹63.08 of fragrance is too much.
Is 50 g fragrance oil more expensive than 100 g?
For many oils, no. Across CSI's catalogue, 52 of 86 oils listing both price them within 1% per gram. Cucumber Green Tea and Royal Apricot are examples. British Rose and Roasted Coffee are exceptions where 100 g is noticeably cheaper per gram.
Is there a minimum order for fragrance oils at CSI?
The listed store states no minimum beyond the smallest pack of each oil — 15 g for 51 oils, 50 g or 100 g for others. Candle Fragrance Oil Supplier With Low MOQ in India covers low-MOQ supply.
Can a small candle brand use premium fragrance oils?
Yes, if the price carries it. Dark Vanilla puts ₹126.40 of oil into a 200 g candle at 100 g, well above a ₹63.08 ceiling. Sell it as a separate, higher-priced candle rather than at your standard price. Best Fragrance Oils for a Premium Candle Brand covers premium ranges.

Figures verified 10 September 2026 (Blog 760): Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 ₹59.00 / 10 (₹5.90 each), ₹590.00 / 100; White Matte Glass Jar ₹354.00 / 5 (₹70.80 each).

Non-price figures and assumptions: Per-gram prices are pack price ÷ grams. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 / kg (₹110.22), one Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and one White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), a base of ₹186.92 before oil, unless a table states otherwise. They exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. "Best-selling" and sort positions refer only to the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort order as pulled on 24 September 2026; CSI publishes no unit sales, and none are implied. Stock status is as listed on the pull date. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. The fragrance ceiling is a target material cost (₹250.00 in the main example) minus the ₹186.92 base, divided by 16 g for a per-gram ceiling. The SKU table assumes 40 candles a month spread evenly; the first month assumes 10 candles per SKU (160 g of oil each, bought as two 100 g), 7.36 kg of wax bought as 8 kg, 40 wicks from a pack of 50 and 40 jars. Catalogue statistics (15 g median premium 23.1%; 52 of 86 oils with 50 g and 100 g within 1%) are from the same pull. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
