CSI Collection Buying · Luxury Collection Mix
Ten scents is a collection only if they differ. Fix the family split first, test about 1.8 candidates per place, and eliminate inside each family with rules you wrote before you smelled anything.
18 → 10
candidate oils tested for ten places: 3 floral, 3 woody, 2 fresh, 2 gourmand · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many floral, woody, fresh and gourmand fragrances should a 10-scent luxury candle collection have? Our default is 3 floral, 3 woody, 2 fresh and 2 gourmand. Floral and woody carry a luxury line, so they get six of the ten places; fresh and gourmand are each capped at two so the collection does not read "spa counter" or "sweet shop". Shift the split to suit your positioning (Indian luxury leans woody; gifting leans gourmand), but keep every family at least one place.

How many should I test to end up with 10? Eighteen: 5 floral, 5 woody, 4 fresh, 4 gourmand. That is 1.8 candidates per place, more where the family is most divisive (florals) and where CSI has more good options (woods).

What does testing 18 cost? 50 g of each is ₹5,250.13 for 900 g of oil: enough to pour every candidate at 6%, 8% and 10% and retest the ten winners. With wax, jars and wicks for 64 candles, ₹17,545.13.

What comes after? A tiered launch: 500 g of the four you expect to sell most and 100 g of the other six, ₹11,309.92, rather than 500 g of all ten at ₹24,116.40.
The short answer
The split: 3 floral · 3 woody · 2 fresh · 2 gourmand. Six places for the families that make a line feel expensive; four for the families that make it feel varied.
The test: 18 candidates at 50 g, three loads each (54 candles), then one retest per survivor (10 more). Six to seven weeks from order to decision.
The rules: no two survivors with the same lead note; no more than two with a named vanilla base; at least one lower-cost oil per family; perfume-grade oils capped at one place, if any.
The budget: ₹2,168.46 for a sniff screen, ₹5,250.13 for a proper test, ₹11,309.92 for a tiered launch.

The test grid behind a 3-3-2-2 luxury collection. Each family gets roughly 1.8 candidates per place. The filled cells are an illustration of one plausible set of survivors; which ten actually survive is decided by your cured, burned test candles, not by this page.
Straight answer
I am building a 10-fragrance luxury candle collection. How many floral, woody, fresh and gourmand oils should I test?
Aim for 3 floral, 3 woody, 2 fresh and 2 gourmand in the finished collection, and test 5, 5, 4 and 4 to get there: eighteen candidates. On CSI's range that is British Rose, Jasmine, Gardenia, Raat Ki Rani and Japanese Cherry Blossom; Sandalwood, Sage and Cedarwood, Woody Oud, White Royal Oud and Palo Santo; Cucumber Green Tea, Blue Ocean, Lemongrass and Lime and Neroli; Roasted Coffee, Cinnamon Vanilla, Dark Vanilla Oud and Vanilla Bean. All eighteen are in stock at 50 g on 24 September 2026 and every page states a candle load, topping out at 10% (13% for Japanese Cherry Blossom and Cinnamon Vanilla, which Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464's 10% ceiling overrides). Buy 50 g of each (₹5,250.13), pour three loads per oil, eliminate within each family, then retest the ten survivors side by side. Launch with 500 g of your four strongest sellers and 100 g of the other six.
One line: test eighteen to keep ten, eliminate inside each family, never across, and let the collection's balance, not your favourite bottle, decide the last place.
The floral that sets a luxury line apart. Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) is ₹370.00 for 50 g (₹7.40/g), enough for three load tests and a retest. The page states "The recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles".
Buy Raat Ki Rani 50 g — ₹370.00

Why 3 floral, 3 woody, 2 fresh, 2 gourmand

A luxury collection is judged on its weakest scent and its most repetitive pair. The family split is how you manage both.

Ten scents is enough for a customer to browse, compare and come back for a second. It is also enough to repeat yourself without noticing: three candles that all dry down to vanilla and musk look like three choices on the shelf and smell like one in a room. The split is a way of forcing variety before you fall in love with individual oils. The reasons for each number are judgement, based on how collections are usually built, not on CSI sales data.

Floral: 3 places — the widest emotional range

Florals span fresh rose, heady white flowers and soft powdery blossom, so three can sit together without overlapping: one rose, one white floral, one either Indian or airy. They are also the family most likely to split opinion, which is why you test five, not four. On CSI's range, the white florals (Jasmine, Gardenia, Raat Ki Rani) are close relatives, so plan for at most two of them to survive.

Woody: 3 places — where "luxury" lives

Woods, ouds and resins give a candle its dry-down and its sense of price. Three woody places let you have a clean wood, a rich oud and something resinous or herbal. CSI's woody bench is deep, so five candidates still leaves good oils out; the elimination is about overlap, not quality.

Fresh: 2 places — capped, not skipped

A luxury line with no fresh scent has nothing for summer and nothing for the customer who finds sweetness heavy. But fresh notes are the first a burning candle spends, so a line with four fresh scents risks feeling thin. Two places: one green or tea-led, one citrus or aquatic. Test four, because fresh oils are the likeliest to disappoint at the doorway.

Gourmand: 2 places — capped hardest

Gourmands sell, and they dominate: one vanilla-coffee candle can make a whole display smell like a café. Two places keep the line from reading as a dessert range. If your brand is gifting-led, the split below gives gourmand a third place. The café and bakery launch plan, including which gourmands need extra hot-throw testing, is in I'm Launching a Café and Bakery Candle Collection — Which Fragrance Oils Should I Buy and Which Ones Usually Need Extra Testing for Hot Throw?.

Mistake: splitting ten places evenly by "what we like" and ending with five woods. Fix: fix the split before you smell anything. Write 3-3-2-2 at the top of the scoring sheet, and when you are tempted by a fourth wood, it has to beat one of the three already in, not join them. For how a five-to-seven scent line is named and positioned as a brand, see Best Hotel-Inspired Fragrances for a Luxury Candle Brand.

The 18 candidates, family by family

Every candidate is in stock at 50 g on 24 September 2026, and every page states a candle load. Notes are quoted from each product page (trimmed where long). The last column is the oil in one 150 g candle at 8% (12 g) at the 50 g price, which is what your test candles cost in oil and a ceiling on what production candles will cost.

By family, the 50 g test sets cost ₹1,305.42 (floral), ₹1,617.70 (woody), ₹1,095.61 (fresh) and ₹1,231.40 (gourmand). The spread per candle runs from ₹42.34 (Cucumber Green Tea) to ₹100.80 (White Royal Oud). A luxury collection can carry the top of that range, but it should know which scents are carrying the margin: if your four best-sellers are also your four dearest oils, price accordingly. Matching oils to price tiers is covered in Hotel Fragrance Oils for Luxury Candles.

Who is missing, and why

Mogra and Rajnigandha (Tuberose) would be natural floral candidates for an Indian luxury line, but both are out of stock on 24 September 2026 at every listed size; ask on WhatsApp about their return rather than planning around them. Vetiver is a fine woody candidate, but its 1 kg is out of stock, which matters for a line you want to reorder. Perfume-grade "inspired" oils in CSI's fine-perfume range are left out of the first eighteen: their pages quote perfume usage rates of 15–25%, which are not candle loads, and they run as high as ₹24.06 per gram, against ₹3.53 to ₹8.40 at 50 g for the eighteen candidates here. We sell them; for a first luxury line, we would not start there. There is also no fresh linen, clean cotton or white tea oil listed, so "clean" in this collection means green tea, citrus or aquatic.

Two loads to watch
Japanese Cherry Blossom's page states "6-13% for candles" and Cinnamon Vanilla's "Up to 13% load for candles". In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, whose page states up to 10%, the lower figure governs: test at 6%, 8% and 10%. Only Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (both up to 13%) would allow more, and a higher ceiling is not a better load.

Other splits for other positionings

3-3-2-2 is a default, not a law. Change it for a reason you can write in one sentence.

The test ratio stays near 1.8 candidates per place, adjusted for how deep CSI's range is in each family. Where the range is thin (fresh for an Indian line, where one place is enough), you test fewer; where it is deep and varied (woods), you can afford one extra.

Four positionings · places kept from candidates tested
How the family split and the test count change with the brand
Positioning Floral Woody Fresh Gourmand Candidates
Classic luxury (this page) 3 from 5 3 from 5 2 from 4 2 from 4 18
Indian luxury 3 from 5 4 from 6 1 from 2 2 from 3 16
Clean, hotel-leaning 2 from 4 3 from 5 3 from 5 2 from 3 17
Gifting-led 3 from 5 2 from 4 2 from 3 3 from 5 17

Indian luxury adds a fourth wood (Sandalwood, an oud, Palo Santo and one of Gilli Mitti or Saffron Cedarwood are all on CSI's range) and drops to one fresh place; with Mogra and Rajnigandha unavailable, the florals come from Raat Ki Rani, Jasmine, Gardenia and British Rose. The distinctive-Indian signature set is the subject of I'm Creating a Luxury Indian Candle Brand — Which Fragrance Oils Can Build a Distinctive Indian Collection?. Clean, hotel-leaning gives fresh a third place and floral one fewer; the hotel launch sequence is in I'm Launching a Hotel-Inspired Candle Collection — Which Fragrance Oils Should I Buy First?. Gifting-led gives gourmand three places, because vanilla, coffee and spice are the easiest scents to buy for someone else, and trims woods to two.

Argued against our own interest: if you cannot write the reason for your split in one sentence, use 3-3-2-2 and test fewer candidates, not more. A 22-oil test programme sells us more 50 g bottles; it also means 66 load-test candles, a month of burn sessions and a decision nobody can hold in their head. Eighteen is already the upper end of what one person can compare fairly.

Elimination rules that keep ten scents distinct

Testing tells you which oils perform. It does not tell you which ten belong together. These rules do; they are our judgement, applied to the notes each page states.

Collection rules · applied after the burn tests
Six rules and how they bite on CSI's candidates
Rule Why Where it bites
1. Eliminate within a family, never across Keeps the split intact. A brilliant fourth wood does not displace a fresh oil; it displaces a wood.
2. No two survivors with the same lead note Two scents a customer cannot tell apart waste a place. Jasmine and Raat Ki Rani (both jasmine-led): keep one. Woody Oud, White Royal Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud all centre on oud: keep one.
3. At most two with a named vanilla base Vanilla bases make different top notes converge in the dry-down. Roasted Coffee (vanilla and caramel base), Cinnamon Vanilla, Dark Vanilla Oud, Vanilla Bean: at most two survive.
4. One lower-cost oil per family Keeps an accessible price point in each family. British Rose (₹4.25/g at 50 g), Woody Oud (₹5.43), Cucumber Green Tea (₹3.53), Roasted Coffee (₹4.60).
5. At least one full-structure oil per family Single-accord oils need a partner on the shelf. Sandalwood is a single note; White Royal Oud and Woody Oud state top, heart and base.
6. Perfume-grade oils: one place at most No stated candle load and higher cost per gram. Only if a burn test at 6–10% passes, and never as your best-seller.
The last-place tiebreak
When two oils tie for the final place in a family, keep the one whose base note is least represented in the other nine. A collection of ten dry-downs that differ is worth more than one extra high score.

The test programme, week by week

Eighteen candidates at three loads is 54 candles; ten survivors retested at the chosen load is 10 more. You need a scale reading to 1 g, a thermometer, labels and a scoring sheet with one column per family.

1
Week 0 — order and set upOrder 50 g of all eighteen and the consumables. Confirm stock on WhatsApp first; sizes change. Label 54 jars by family, oil and load (6%, 8%, 10%).
2
Week 1 — pour all 54 on one dayFor a 150 g candle: 6% = 9 g oil + 141 g wax; 8% = 12 g + 138 g; 10% = 15 g + 135 g. Same wax, same temperatures from the wax page, same wick. Each oil uses 36 g, leaving 14 g for its retest.
3
Week 2 — cure seven days, then cold-sniff blind by familySomeone else hands you the five florals, then the five woods, and so on. Score each 1–5. A candidate that scores 2 or less cold at every load is out now.
4
Weeks 2–4 — burn one candle per sessionSame room, two to three hours, notes at 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours from the doorway. Record the lowest load that scored well and any soot or tunnelling. Burn within sight and keep the room ventilated between sessions.
5
Week 4 — eliminate within each family, then apply the six rulesRank each family by doorway score at the lowest passing load. Keep the top 3, 3, 2 and 2, then run rules 2 to 6. Swap in the next-ranked oil wherever a rule removes one.
6
Weeks 5–6 — retest the ten as a collectionPour one candle per survivor at its chosen load, cure a week, then burn them over ten days in the same room. You are listening for repetition now, not strength: if two feel like the same candle, rule 2 has been missed.
7
Week 7 — decide the launch tiersMark four as likely best-sellers (usually one per family) and six as supporting. That split drives the launch order below.
Mistake: judging all eighteen in one sitting. Fix: noses tire fast; smell one family per session and burn one candle per session. Cure matters too: of these eighteen pages, none we quote states a cure time, so seven days for every candle is our judgement; at least 48–72 hours is common practice and longer for soy is usual.

Six candidates worth a closer look

Not a ranking and not a shortlist of survivors: these six are the candidates whose role in a luxury line is easiest to misjudge, one or two per family. Chosen on stated notes, stated load, stock at every size and price; CSI has no throw measurements.

1
white floral · Indian signature
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Fragrance Oil
The candidate most likely to make a luxury line recognisably Indian. Stated notes: "Top Notes: Green Stems, Fresh Ozone | Middle Notes: Night-Blooming Jasmine, White Florals | Base Notes: Soft Amber, Musk"; stated load "The recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles". The green, ozonic top is what separates it from a plain jasmine. Limitation: at ₹7.40 per gram at 50 g it is the dearest floral candidate, and rule 2 means it competes directly with Jasmine for one place.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹130.00 ₹8.67 1
50 gm ₹370.00 ₹7.40 4
100 gm ₹700.00 ₹7.00 8
500 gm ₹3,387.00 ₹6.77 41
1 kg ₹6,774.00 ₹6.77 83
The 15 g is 17% dearer per gram than the 50 g: buy 50 g for a proper test. Buy Raat Ki Rani
2
rose · the accessible floral
British Rose Fragrance Oil
The lowest-cost floral on the list and a rose that stays fresh rather than jammy: "fresh, dewy rose petals with subtle green undertones and a soft floral finish", stated load "candles (up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin)". An unverified review on its page describes a strong cold and hot throw; we treat that as one buyer's experience, not a measurement. Limitation: a single-accord rose may need a woody neighbour on the shelf to feel luxurious rather than traditional.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹94.40 ₹6.29 1
50 gm ₹212.40 ₹4.25 4
100 gm ₹342.20 ₹3.42 8
500 gm ₹1,593.00 ₹3.19 41
1 kg ₹3,068.00 ₹3.07 83
₹3.07 per gram at 1 kg, the lowest of the eighteen at that size. Buy British Rose
3
oud · the rich wood
Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
A full-structure oud at a mid-range price: "citrus and spice top notes opening into rich oud and patchouli heart, settling into warm woody notes, amber, and musk", stated load "candles (6-10%)". Both reviews on its page are verified and positive, one describing a warm, long-lasting scent in candles. Limitation: it shares an oud centre with White Royal Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud, so if two or more survive the burn, rule 2 keeps only one.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹93.22 ₹6.21 1
50 gm ₹271.40 ₹5.43 4
100 gm ₹453.12 ₹4.53 8
500 gm ₹2,265.60 ₹4.53 41
1 kg ₹4,531.20 ₹4.53 83
Flat at ₹4.53 per gram from 100 g to 1 kg: no bulk penalty for small reorders. Buy Woody Oud
4
resinous wood · the quiet one
Palo Santo Fragrance Oil
The resinous alternative to another sandalwood: "Earthy palo santo with soft citrus, warm amber, and a touch of incense", stated load "Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax". It gives a woody trio a third texture (clean wood, rich oud, resin). Limitation: incense-leaning scents can read as a place of worship to some customers; test it on people outside your team before it takes a place.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹106.20 ₹7.08 1
50 gm ₹300.90 ₹6.02 4
100 gm ₹601.80 ₹6.02 8
500 gm ₹3,009.00 ₹6.02 41
1 kg ₹6,018.00 ₹6.02 83
Priced flat at ₹6.02 per gram from 50 g to 1 kg. Buy Palo Santo
5
citrus floral · the luxury fresh
Neroli Fragrance Oil
The fresh candidate that still feels expensive: "Bright neroli with hints of orange blossom, honey, and soft green undertones", stated load "Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax". It bridges fresh and floral, which makes it a strong second fresh place beside a tea or aquatic. Limitation: that bridge is also a risk under rule 2 if Raat Ki Rani or Gardenia survive with a similar brightness; smell them side by side.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹118.00 ₹7.87 1
50 gm ₹342.20 ₹6.84 4
100 gm ₹665.52 ₹6.66 8
500 gm ₹3,327.60 ₹6.66 41
1 kg ₹6,655.20 ₹6.66 83
₹6.84 per gram at 50 g, ₹6.66 from 100 g up: little gained from bulk. Buy Neroli
6
spiced gourmand · the warm dessert
Cinnamon Vanilla
A gourmand with spice, not just sugar: "cinnamon and clove top notes, vanilla bean and sugar middle notes, and cream and butter base". The page states "Up to 13% load for candles" and describes it as "IFRA-certified" and "Phthalate-free" (the page's wording; ask for documents on WhatsApp). Two verified reviews on the page are positive, one at four stars. Limitation: it counts against rule 3 (vanilla base), so it and Roasted Coffee may be the only two gourmands that can both stay.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹106.20 ₹7.08 1
50 gm ₹271.40 ₹5.43 4
100 gm ₹483.80 ₹4.84 8
500 gm ₹2,301.00 ₹4.60 41
1 kg ₹4,554.80 ₹4.55 83
1 kg is ₹4.55/g against ₹5.43 at 50 g; oil per 8% candle at 50 g: ₹65.14. Buy Cinnamon Vanilla

Budgets at three depths, and the launch order

The cheapest test is the one you do not have to repeat.
Three test depths · CSI live pricing, September 2026
What each depth costs and what it can prove
Depth Oils Oil cost Programme total What it proves
1 · Sniff screen 15 g of 17 + 50 g Sage and Cedarwood ₹2,168.46 ₹5,796.66 with 3 kg wax, 20 jars, 20 wicks, stickers Cold-sniff, and one 8% candle per oil. Enough to cut 18 to 12; not enough to choose loads.
2 · Proper test (our pick) 50 g of all 18 ₹5,250.13 ₹17,545.13 with 10 kg wax, 70 jars, 70 wicks, stickers Three loads each, a retest for every survivor, a collection burn.
3 · Screen, then test Depth 1, then 50 g of the 12 who pass ₹2,168.46 + roughly two-thirds of depth 2 More than depth 2 Only worth it if you start with more than 18 candidates.

Depth 2 costs ₹3,081.67 more in oil than depth 1 and is the one we recommend: the extra buys three loads per oil instead of one candle. The 15 g is the expensive size per gram (British Rose's is 48% dearer per gram than its 50 g), so the sniff screen only makes sense as a filter. The consumables for depth 2 are ₹12,295.00: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 10 kg ₹5,074.00 (₹0.51/g, flat from 1 kg), Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) three packs of 20 and one of 10 (₹6,608.00), Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 50 + 20 (₹413.00) and two sheets of Candle Wick Stickers (₹200.00). The C1 is a starting point only; run a melt-pool test and see the wicks collection if the pool does not reach the edge. Spread across ten finished places, depth 2 is ₹1,754.51 per slot.

The launch order: tiered, not flat

Using the illustrative survivors from the diagram (British Rose, Gardenia, Raat Ki Rani; Sandalwood, Woody Oud, Palo Santo; Cucumber Green Tea, Neroli; Roasted Coffee, Cinnamon Vanilla), three ways to stock the launch:

Launch stock for ten survivors · worked example
Flat 100 g, tiered, or flat 500 g
Option What you buy Cost Candles at 8% When it fits
Soft launch 100 g of each of the ten ₹4,924.94 80 (8 per scent) Pre-orders, a pop-up, or a gifting season with uncertain demand.
Tiered (our pick) 500 g of Sandalwood, British Rose, Woody Oud, Cucumber Green Tea; 100 g of the other six ₹11,309.92 212 (41 each for four, 8 each for six) You know roughly which four will lead.
Flat 500 g 500 g of each of the ten ₹24,116.40 410 (41 per scent) Wholesale or corporate orders already in hand.

Reorder triggers, per scent: move a 100 g scent to 500 g when it sells its eight candles within a month; move a 500 g scent to 1 kg only when the per-gram price falls at 1 kg and it empties a 500 g within six weeks (for Woody Oud and Sandalwood, 500 g and 1 kg cost the same per gram, so stay at 500 g). Christmas 25 December 2026 and Valentine's Day 14 February 2027: order the eighteen by early October and the programme ends in mid-November, in time to launch for Christmas; Diwali on 8 November is too close for a ten-scent line. The CSI principle
Decide the shape of the collection before you smell a single oil.
A split written down first (3-3-2-2, or your own with a reason) turns eighteen tempting bottles into four small, fair contests. Without it, the ten you keep are just the ten you liked on the day.
"Ten good oils are easy to find. Ten that belong on the same shelf take eighteen bottles and a set of rules."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wax, jars and wicks named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page recommends against the most expensive options on our own range for a first luxury line (perfume-grade oils), against buying 500 g of every finalist, and against a larger test programme than you can judge fairly.

Every price and stock status was taken from CSI's live store and verified on 24 September 2026; out-of-stock oils (Mogra, Rajnigandha) and sizes (Vetiver 1 kg) are flagged and not used. Notes and candle loads are quoted from each product page.

The 3-3-2-2 split, the 1.8 test ratio, the elimination rules and the example survivors are our judgement, not sales data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How many scents should a luxury candle collection have?
Five to seven is a common size for a first line; ten gives customers room to browse and compare. At ten, split across families (our default is 3 floral, 3 woody, 2 fresh, 2 gourmand) so the collection does not repeat itself.
How many fragrance oils should I test for a 10-candle collection?
About 18: five floral, five woody, four fresh, four gourmand. That is 1.8 candidates per place, which leaves room to eliminate within each family and to apply overlap rules without running short.
What is the best family split for a candle collection?
There is no single best; it depends on positioning. Classic luxury 3-3-2-2 (floral, woody, fresh, gourmand), Indian luxury 3-4-1-2, clean or hotel-leaning 2-3-3-2, gifting-led 3-2-2-3. Every family should keep at least one place.
How much does it cost to test 18 fragrance oils for candles in India?
At CSI, 50 g of eighteen candle-grade oils costs ₹5,250.13. With 10 kg of soy wax, 70 jars, 70 wicks and stickers for 64 test candles, the programme is ₹17,545.13, before freight and GST.
Should I use perfume-grade fragrance oils in luxury candles?
Not as the backbone. CSI's perfume-grade pages quote perfume usage rates (15–25%), not candle loads, and the dearest cost ₹24.06 per gram. If one passes your burn test at 6–10%, give it one place at most.
How do I stop candles in a collection smelling the same?
Check the base notes, not just the names. Allow no more than two scents with a named vanilla base, never two with the same lead note, and burn the finalists as a set over ten days before you launch.
