Candle Fragrance Oil Discovery Set for Businesses
Share
How many oils should a brand discovery set have? Ten to twelve, two per family across five or six families. Twelve oils here cost ₹1,365.02; the ten-oil version costs ₹1,166.78. Fewer than ten and you cannot compare within a family.
How do I test a discovery set? Three 50 g pots per oil at 8%: one you burn, two for a panel of five to eight people who match your customer. Score by family, then cut to one or two per family. See the panel plan.
What does it cost against launch stock? The whole set with wax and wicks costs ₹2,916.02, about 17% of a six-scent launch at 500 g each (₹17,170.20). Launching all twelve unsampled at 500 g would cost ₹34,617.00.
Build by family, not by favourite
Individual makers sample oils they like. A business needs to sample the shape of a range: which families its customers respond to, and which oil within each family carries the brand. That changes how the set is built. Instead of the twelve most appealing oils, you choose two from each of six families. Two is the smallest number that lets a panel compare within a family; six families is roughly the spread of a first range without becoming a catalogue.
| Set design | Tells you | Misses |
|---|---|---|
| Twelve favourites | Which twelve oils you like | Whether your range has gaps or three of the same thing |
| One per family (six) | Which families appeal | Whether a different oil in a weak family would have done better |
| Two per family (twelve) | Which families appeal and which oil leads each | How oils perform in your production jar — that is a trial batch |
| Four per family, three families | The best oil in a narrow range | Whether customers wanted other families at all |
Family names are ours, not a CSI classification, and you should adjust them to your market. A brand selling mostly at Diwali may want an Indian floral family and a spice family; a spa-style brand may split fresh into citrus and green. The principle holds: two per family, five or six families. Choosing your first collection and the starter collection for new brands go deeper into range design; this page is about the set you use to find it.
The twelve-oil set
The set below uses only oils with a 15 g in stock and every larger size in stock on the pull date, so whichever wins can go straight to production stock. The last column is the oil's production cost inside a 200 g candle at 8%, at its 1 kg rate, so the set also shows the cost range your finished line will carry.
| Family | Oil | 15 g price | 1 kg ₹/g | Oil per 200 g candle | Material cost per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic floral | British Rose | ₹94.40 | ₹3.07 | ₹49.09 | ₹236.00 |

| Indian & earthy | Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) | ₹130.00 | ₹6.77 | ₹108.38 | ₹295.30 |

| Total | 12 oils · 180 g | ₹1,365.02 | — | — | — |
Material cost is oil, 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹186.92 before oil); it excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. Across the set it runs from ₹236.00 to ₹330.28. A brand can carry that spread, but it should know it is doing so: if the panel picks Gilli Mitti and White Royal Oud as family leads, those two candles will cost noticeably more to make than the rose beside them and probably need a higher price.

The customer-panel plan
A discovery set is most useful when people other than you judge it. Pour three 50 g pots per oil at 8%, 4 g of oil and 46 g of wax each, 12 g of the 15 g bottle. One pot is yours to burn and score. The other two go to a panel of five to eight people who look like your customer: the corporate buyer, the gift shopper, the regular at your market stall. Twelve oils means 36 pots and 1,656 g of wax.
| Question | Pot A | Pot B |
|---|---|---|
| Unlit, which do you prefer? | ✓ / — | ✓ / — |
| Lit for 30 minutes, which do you prefer? | ✓ / — | ✓ / — |
| One word for the scent | … | … |
| Would you buy it as a gift? | Yes / maybe / no | Yes / maybe / no |
| Would you pay more for this one? | Yes / no | Yes / no |
Cutting twelve to six
The cut is where discovery turns into a range. Do it by rule, in this order, and write the reason beside each oil you drop. The rules are working guidance, not laws; adjust them to your market, but decide them before the results come in.
| Rule | Keep | Drop |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Fails your burn | — | Any oil that tunnels, soots or throws weakly in your own pot, whatever the panel says |
| 2 · Loses its family on the panel | The family winner | The family loser, unless the vote was close — then keep both for a trial batch |
| 3 · Nobody would pay more | Oils with at least some 'pay more' votes | Families where neither oil drew a 'pay more' vote — consider dropping the family |
| 4 · Margin check | Winners whose material cost fits your price | Winners that do not — or move them to a premium tier with a higher price |
| 5 · Reorder check | Oils with production sizes in stock | Oils you could not buy at 500 g or 1 kg by your launch date |
Rule 4 is where the last column of the set table earns its place. If the family winner in woody and oud is White Royal Oud at ₹129.65 of oil per candle, and your range price is set for the rose at ₹49.09, either the oud candle is priced higher or the runner-up, Saffron Cedarwood at ₹109.88, takes the slot. Both are fine decisions. Launching the oud at the rose's price without noticing is not. Fragrances for a premium brand covers pricing a signature tier.
From discovery to launch stock
Suppose the panel picks the first oil in each family. A first launch run of 30 candles per scent at 8% needs 480 g of oil, or 504 g with a 5% working allowance for pour loss and test burns, so one 500 g pack per scent is about right. Here is what that costs, set against what the discovery exercise cost:
| Scent | Pack | Price | ₹/g | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | 500 g | ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19 | 31.25 |
| Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) | 500 g | ₹3,387.00 | ₹6.77 | 31.25 |
| Lemongrass and Lime | 500 g | ₹2,600.00 | ₹5.20 | 31.25 |
| Honeydew Melon | 500 g | ₹1,699.20 | ₹3.40 | 31.25 |
| Vanilla Bean | 500 g | ₹3,840.00 | ₹7.68 | 31.25 |
| White Royal Oud | 500 g | ₹4,051.00 | ₹8.10 | 31.25 |
| Launch stock total | 3 kg | ₹17,170.20 | — | 187.5 |
The discovery set with wax and wicks costs ₹2,916.02, which is 17.0% of that launch stock. The alternative, buying all twelve oils at 500 g and letting sales decide, would cost ₹34,617.00 and leave you holding six half-used packs of scents your customers did not choose. Note that a 500 g is not usually cheaper per gram than a 100 g on CSI's listed prices; the price hub explains where the breaks are. Buy 500 g here for stock security on a proven scent, not for a discount. For planning the full launch quantities, buying for ten fragrances before you know what sells takes it further.

Forty wicks cover 36 pots with four spare. 2 kg of wax covers the 1,656 g needed with room for a re-pour. Test pots are not priced; use one size of small heat-proof container throughout. Excludes freight and GST. Four Thin C1 10-packs (₹236.00) cost less than one 50-pack (₹295.00) here; check the wick suits your pot on the product page.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and does not sell a fragrance discovery set. This page shows a business how to build one from 15 g sizes, and it argues for testing twelve and launching six even though buying twelve at production size would sell more of our oil.
Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; every oil in the set was in stock at every listed size that day. Wick and centring-device prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-candle costs, totals and the discovery-to-launch ratio are plain arithmetic on those prices.
Family groupings, the panel design, the five cut rules and the 30-candle launch run are working assumptions for planning, not CSI classifications or market data; the 5% allowance is a working assumption.
