Best Fragrance Oils for Paraffin Candle Making
Share
How much fragrance oil can paraffin hold? CSI does not publish a fragrance ceiling for its paraffin. Check the wax's product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's figure. Use 6–10% only as a labelled test range. How much oil to use in paraffin sets out a test ladder.
Is paraffin cheaper to scent than soy? The wax is cheaper, the oil is not. At an 8% test load, the wax in a 200 g candle costs ₹65.14 in paraffin against ₹110.22 in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. The oil costs the same in both, so it becomes a bigger share of the paraffin candle.
Which oil is cheapest per candle in paraffin? At 1 kg rates, Citrus Lemon at ₹45.31 of oil per 200 g candle, giving a material cost of ₹187.15. British Rose is ₹49.09. Costs are shown in the per-candle table.
What paraffin changes about choosing an oil
Paraffin is the classic candle wax, and the one many Indian candle businesses built on before soy became the default for scented jars. CSI lists Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets at ₹177.00 for 500 g and ₹354.00 for 1 kg, which is the same rate per gram at both sizes. There is also a Semi Refined Paraffin Wax 1 kg at ₹220.00, but only one unit was in stock on the pull date, so do not plan production on it. The Microcrystalline Wax Slab at ₹299.00 a kilo is cheaper per kilo but is an additive for blending, not a base wax. That leaves the fully refined pellets as the lowest-cost base wax you can actually plan on.
Three things follow for oil choice. First, the oil's price dominates. The wax in a 200 g candle costs ₹65.14, while even the cheapest oil at an 8% test load costs ₹45.31. Second, no fragrance ceiling is published for CSI's paraffin in the data behind this series. The two ceilings we can quote belong to soy waxes: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%. For paraffin, check the wax's product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. Third, no oil has published hot-throw data in paraffin or any other wax, so every recommendation below is a reasoned place to start, not a result.
The same oil in five waxes
The quickest way to see why paraffin changes the oil decision is to hold everything else still. The table below uses one oil, Lavender at its 1 kg rate of ₹5.22 a gram, in a 200 g container candle at an 8% test load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), with an Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80. Only the wax changes.
| Wax | Per kg | Wax in one candle (184 g) | Material cost per candle | Oil's share | Fragrance ceiling in the data |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets | ₹354.00 | ₹65.14 | ₹225.37 | 37.1% | Not published — check the wax page / ask |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹450.00 | ₹82.80 | ₹243.04 | 34.4% | Not published — check the wax page |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹507.40 | ₹93.36 | ₹253.60 | 32.9% | Up to 10% (wax maker's stated maximum) |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599.00 | ₹110.22 | ₹270.45 | 30.9% | Up to 13% (wax maker's stated maximum) |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | ₹650.00 | ₹119.60 | ₹279.84 | 29.9% | Not published — check the wax page |
Paraffin saves ₹45.08 a candle against soy chunks and ₹54.46 against coconut soy CSI 468. That is real money across a production run. But look at the fifth column. In paraffin the oil is 37.1% of what the candle costs to make, against 30.9% in soy chunks. Every rupee you save on wax makes the oil a bigger part of the bill, so a poor oil choice costs you proportionally more in paraffin than in soy.
The comparison is a cost view only. It says nothing about which wax suits your product. Paraffin and soy behave differently in the jar and in the mould, and a customer who has asked for soy will not accept paraffin at any price. If you are still choosing the wax, the soy hub Best Fragrance Oils for Soy Candle Making in India covers the other side. Everything that follows assumes you have chosen paraffin.
The eight-oil paraffin shortlist
The shortlist covers the fragrance families that make up most scented-candle ranges: citrus, floral, gourmand, spiced fruit, fresh, woody, herbal and a rich vanilla. Each oil was chosen for a stated reason: its position near the top of the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort on 24 September 2026, a low or unusual price point, or a real price break at 1 kg. Every oil here has a 15 g tester in stock, so the whole shortlist can be tested before you commit to a larger size.
| Oil | Family | 15 g tester | ₹/g at 1 kg | Oil per candle | Material cost per candle | Why it is on the list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | Citrus | ₹81.42 | ₹2.83 | ₹45.31 | ₹187.15 | Lowest 1 kg price in the collection; a bright, simple profile to benchmark against |
| British Rose | Floral | ₹94.40 | ₹3.07 | ₹49.09 | ₹190.92 | One of the few oils with a real 1 kg saving (10.3%); near the top of the best-selling sort |
| Roasted Coffee | Gourmand | ₹93.22 | ₹3.74 | ₹59.81 | ₹201.64 | Third in the best-selling sort; low per-gram price for a gourmand |
| Apple Cinnamon | Spiced fruit | ₹93.22 | ₹4.74 | ₹75.90 | ₹217.73 | A festive profile priced flat from 50 g to 1 kg |
| Blue Ocean | Fresh / aquatic | ₹93.22 | ₹4.96 | ₹79.30 | ₹221.13 | Near the top of the best-selling sort; a fresh profile for bathrooms and hallways |
| Sandalwood | Woody | ₹93.22 | ₹5.03 | ₹80.43 | ₹222.26 | Near the top of the best-selling sort; woods are a staple for Indian gifting |
| Lavender | Herbal | ₹105.02 | ₹5.22 | ₹83.54 | ₹225.37 | First in the best-selling sort on the pull date |
| Dark Vanilla | Rich gourmand | ₹130.00 | ₹7.65 | ₹122.34 | ₹264.17 | The premium-tier check: what happens when fragrance is almost half the bill |
Material cost per candle runs from ₹187.15 with Citrus Lemon to ₹264.17 with Dark Vanilla, a spread of ₹77.02, and almost all of that spread is the oil. In soy chunks the same two oils would cost ₹232.23 and ₹309.25. The gap is identical in rupees, because the wax is a fixed amount either way, but in paraffin it is a much larger proportion of the candle. The full eight-oil tester set costs ₹783.72.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 200 g candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹94.40 | ₹6.29 | 0.94 |

Choosing by family, not by hype
A paraffin range usually needs one oil from each of four or five families rather than five oils from one. Customers shop by mood: something fresh for a bathroom, something warm for the living room, something festive in October and November. The table below shows each shortlisted oil at its 100 g rate, which is the size most small makers produce from, and what moving to 1 kg does to the per-candle oil cost.
| Family | Oil | ₹/g at 100 g | Oil per candle at 100 g | Oil per candle at 1 kg | 1 kg saving per gram |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus | Citrus Lemon | ₹3.00 | ₹48.00 | ₹45.31 | 5.6% |
| Floral | British Rose | ₹3.42 | ₹54.75 | ₹49.09 | 10.3% |
| Gourmand | Roasted Coffee | ₹3.90 | ₹62.40 | ₹59.81 | 4.2% |
| Spiced fruit | Apple Cinnamon | ₹4.74 | ₹75.90 | ₹75.90 | none |
| Fresh / aquatic | Blue Ocean | ₹4.95 | ₹79.20 | ₹79.30 | none (1 kg 0.1% dearer) |
| Woody | Sandalwood | ₹5.03 | ₹80.43 | ₹80.43 | none |
| Herbal | Lavender | ₹5.40 | ₹86.40 | ₹83.54 | 3.3% |
| Rich gourmand | Dark Vanilla | ₹7.90 | ₹126.40 | ₹122.34 | 3.2% |
Most of the savings column is small. For five of the eight oils the 1 kg saves less than 4% per gram, and for three of those it saves nothing at all: Blue Ocean's kilo is even fractionally dearer per gram than its 100 g. Citrus Lemon at 5.6% and British Rose at 10.3% are the only two above 5%. So in paraffin, as in every other wax, buying bigger mostly buys convenience and stock security, not a lower rate. Buying 1 kg for paraffin goes through when the kilo is still the right buy.
Families commonly chosen for paraffin ranges
Citrus and fresh profiles such as Citrus Lemon and Blue Ocean are commonly used for kitchens, bathrooms and value ranges. They sit at the low end of the price scale, which suits a paraffin candle sold at an entry price. Florals like British Rose and Jasmine carry Indian gifting well. Gourmands and spiced fruit, such as Roasted Coffee and Apple Cinnamon, do most of their work in the festive season. Woods such as Sandalwood suit gifting boxes and corporate orders. These are reasons based on how people buy candles, not claims that any family performs better in paraffin.
Proving your own best oils
The shortlist gives you a place to start. Your own burn tests decide which oils belong in your range. The sequence below uses the smallest sizes and a single kilo of wax, so the whole exercise costs little more than a single retail candle order.
A realistic first test order is the eight testers (₹783.72), two kilos of paraffin pellets (₹708.00), ten White Matte Glass Jars (two packs of five, ₹708.00) and a 10-pack of Eco Thin C1 wicks (₹59.00). That totals ₹2,258.72 and pours eight 200 g test candles at 7.5% using 1,480 g of wax, with 520 g of wax and two jars left for re-pours. Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns as a working assumption.
From shortlist to a first range
Once the tests are done, you will usually keep one oil per family you intend to sell and drop the rest. At that point, the per-candle table becomes your pricing sheet. A range of Citrus Lemon, British Rose, Roasted Coffee and Sandalwood, for example, has material costs between ₹187.15 and ₹222.26 per 200 g candle, a spread narrow enough to sell at one price. Add Dark Vanilla at ₹264.17 and you probably need a second price point.
Commercial buyers should read the rest of the cluster in order of what comes next. Wholesale Fragrance Oils for Paraffin Candle Manufacturers covers quotes beyond the listed packs. Bulk Fragrance Oils for Commercial Paraffin Candles covers holding stock for a commercial range, and Fragrance Oil for Paraffin Wax Commercial Production works through batch maths for a production run. If your paraffin candles are going into jars, Best Fragrance Oils for Container Candles covers container candles more generally, and Best Fragrance Oils for Pillar Candles covers pillars.
One last check before you launch. Ask for the IFRA certificate and MSDS for each oil you keep, and read the candle-safe checklist for paraffin. Individual oils' IFRA figures and flash points are not stated in this guide; they are on the documents, which CSI supplies on request.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell both paraffin and soy waxes, and on cost alone paraffin is the cheaper base. We say so, and we also say what the lower wax price does not do: it does not make an expensive oil cheap, and it does not tell you which oil will perform. Nothing on this page ranks oils by throw, because we have not published throw measurements.
Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. The per-candle figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them. Best-selling positions refer to the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort on the pull date, not to sales figures.
The 200 g candle and 8% load are working assumptions for comparison. No fragrance ceiling is published for CSI's paraffin in this data, so 6–10% is a test range, not a specification. Non-price figures and assumptions: Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% test load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), oil at its 1 kg rate unless stated, one Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and one White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80). They exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. No fragrance ceiling is published for CSI's paraffin in this data; the 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464) figures are the soy wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. The 15 g median premium of 23.1% over 100 g and the count of 24 oils with a 1 kg saving of 5% or more come from the full collection pull. "Best-selling" refers to the collection's best-selling sort order on the pull date. Wastage of 3–5% is a working assumption.
