The five families of a romantic candle

"Romantic" is the word customers use; families are the words you buy with. When you open the CSI fragrance-oils collection, nothing is labelled romantic, and that is correct: romance in a candle is an association, and it comes from a small group of note families that people have learned to read as affectionate, tender or intimate. Get the families right and the mood follows. Get them wrong, usually by stacking too much sweetness, and the candle reads as a bakery, not a date.

1 · Rose: the headline

Rose is the one note almost every customer names first when asked what a romantic candle should smell of. It carries the whole cultural load of Valentine's Day, weddings and anniversaries, which makes it the safest anchor and the hardest to make distinctive. Rose oils vary more than people expect: a dewy, green rose reads fresh and daytime; a jammy or smoky rose reads evening and adult. British Rose sits at the fresh end ("fresh, dewy rose petals with subtle green undertones and a soft floral finish"), which is why it works as the everyday anchor. 2 · Vanilla: the warmth

Vanilla turns a pretty candle into a comforting one. In a romantic range it does two jobs: as a lead scent, it is the cosy "night in" candle; as a base under rose or fruit, it rounds edges and makes the dry-down linger. Vanilla Bean's page describes "creamy, sweet vanilla with subtle caramel undertones". The honest limitation is price: at ₹8.20 per gram at 50 g, Vanilla Bean costs 1.93 times British Rose per gram. 3 · Red fruits: the playful, giftable side

Strawberry, raspberry, cherry and pomegranate read as flirtation rather than devotion. They are what makes a romantic range feel young and giftable, especially to buyers in their twenties, and they pair naturally with red and pink jars. Fresh Strawberries describes "ripe strawberry and citrus zest top notes, sweet rose and honeydew melon middle notes, and vanilla sugar and creamy sandalwood base". Notice that it already contains a rose and a vanilla, so it can bridge the two sides of your line on its own. 4 · Soft florals: the tenderness

Blossom, jasmine, peony and freesia give a romantic range its gentler notes, the candle for a quiet anniversary dinner or a bedside table rather than a big gesture. The key word is soft: a heavy white floral such as tuberose can turn heady in a small room. Japanese Cherry Blossom describes "sweet cherry and soft pink petals opening into a rose and jasmine heart, grounded by warm sandalwood and musk", which makes it a floral with a built-in fruit top and a warm base, and the most flexible oil on this shortlist.

5 · Musk and amber: the part that lingers

The base is what stays in the room after the candle is blown out, and in romantic candles it is usually white musk, a powdery vanilla or a soft amber. It is the family customers rarely name and always notice: a rose candle with no base reads thin, and the same rose over musk reads intimate. Love Spell's page describes it as opening "with peach, cherry blossom, and red apple", settling "into jasmine, lilac, and soft rose" and melting "into white musk and powdery vanilla". It is on this list for that musky, powdery finish, not for its top.

A note on that last row: the full Forever Red name shown is CSI's product listing name. The oil is CSI's interpretation of a style, CSI is not affiliated with the brand, and the brand name should never appear on your own candle label. The same caution applies to any listing name that echoes a well-known retail scent: name your candles yourself.

The CSI romantic shortlist: one oil per family

Ranked by how central each family is to a romantic range, then by what we can show you: a stated candle load, price per gram at 50 g, stock at every listed size, and whether the stated notes carry a base. CSI has no throw measurements for these oils and we will not invent any. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8% (12 g of oil).

Reading a romantic oil's page before you buy

Every CSI oil page gives you three things you can use before spending a rupee: the stated notes, the stated candle load (or its absence) and the size ladder. For romantic oils, each tells you something specific.

The notes: count the sweet words

Romantic oils fail most often by being too sweet, and the page usually warns you. Count the sugary words in the stated notes: vanilla sugar, sugar crystals, caramel, praline, honey, cream. Fresh Strawberries has "vanilla sugar"; Vanilla Bean has "caramel"; Love Spell has "powdery vanilla". British Rose has none, and Japanese Cherry Blossom has only "sweet cherry" over a woody base. In a range, you want no more than two oils whose bases are sugar-led. A quick rule we use: if the base names sugar, give it a fresh or floral neighbour on the shelf.

The base: does anything stay?

Look for musk, amber, sandalwood or woods in the base. Three of the five shortlisted oils name one: sandalwood (Fresh Strawberries, Japanese Cherry Blossom) and musk (Japanese Cherry Blossom, Love Spell). Vanilla Bean is a single accord and British Rose names no base at all, which is exactly why those two sit next to a musky oil in the palette. A romantic candle that disappears when you blow it out has lost the most intimate part of the job.

The candle load: stated, or not

All five shortlisted oils state a candle load: up to 10% soy (British Rose, Vanilla Bean), 6–9% (Fresh Strawberries), 6–13% (Japanese Cherry Blossom) and 8–10% in soy (Love Spell). The lower of the oil's figure and your wax's ceiling governs. Several attractive romantic oils in the range do not state one: Smoked Rose Royale, Spicy Raspberry, Solar Bloom, Vanilla Orange Blossom and the perfume-grade "inspired" listings, whose 15–25% figures are perfume usage rates, not candle loads. Those are not bad oils; they are oils where you work inside your wax's ceiling and test with more care. That is why none of them is on the hub shortlist.

Love Spell is the one oil where we would start the test at 8% rather than 6%, because the page's own range begins there. Everywhere else, 6% is a sensible floor to learn from.

The palette basket, with exact totals

This is one basket for one purpose: to smell all five families burning in the same jar and wax, and to decide which one leads your range. The non-oil lines are ₹3,880.20, more than the oils. That is normal and it is the reason we suggest a coloured jar in the test: a pink or red jar changes how people read a romantic candle before they smell it, so judge the scent in the container it will be sold in. What one romantic candle costs

Worked example, British Rose at 8% in the pink 150 g jar: 12 g of oil at the 50 g price (₹50.98) + 138 g of CSI 464 (₹70.02) + one jar (₹107.00) + one C1 wick (₹5.90) = ₹233.90. The same candle in Vanilla Bean is ₹281.32. Both exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. The jar costs more than the oil in either candle, so if you need to lower a price point, change the jar before you change the fragrance.

Testing romantic oils: the three ways they fail

Romantic oils fail in more predictable ways than fresh or woody ones, so the test is built around catching three problems: sweetness fatigue, a rose that goes thin or sharp, and discolouration. You need a scale reading to 1 g, a thermometer, the wax page's temperatures and a notebook.

What CSI does not have, and what to use instead

No standalone peony or lily oil is listed on 24 September 2026, and no candle-grade freesia. Those notes appear inside blends, for example peony in Pink Crush and in the Forever Red listing, freesia in Pink Crush. The one freesia-led listing is English Pear & Freesia in the fine-perfume collection, from 100 g at ₹1,499.00, which sits outside this candle-grade shortlist. No oil is called "red rose" or "rose oud" in the candle-grade range; the darker rose is Smoked Rose Royale (a smoky bakhoor rose, from 100 g, no candle load stated), and White Royal Oud lists rose petals within an oud. Mogra and Rajnigandha are out of stock, so an Indian-flower romantic candle currently leans on Jasmine or Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine), both in stock at every size. Where romantic candles sell across the Indian year

A romantic range is not a February-only product in India, which is why it is worth building properly. The practical point is timing: Valentine's Day is 143 days from the date these prices were checked.
