What makes an oil a safe gift crowd-pleaser

A candle shop can sell an unusual scent to the one person in ten who loves it. A gift manufacturer cannot: the candle is chosen by a corporate buyer, a wedding planner or a hamper company for dozens or hundreds of recipients, most of whom will never have asked for it. The oil has to be pleasant to almost everyone, recognisable without explanation, and repeatable across batches. Six crowd-pleasers with their full size ladders

Ordered by 1 kg price per gram, cheapest first. Every size listed on 24 September 2026 is shown with candle counts at 8% in a 150 g candle (12 g of oil).

Per-gram ladders: the 100 g to 1 kg step

A manufacturer's real choice is rarely 15 g against 1 kg. You test at 50 g, you top up at 100 g, and you argue with yourself about the kilogram. So the useful comparison is 100 g against 1 kg: how much cash does a kilogram save over ten 100 g bottles?

The pattern is clear. On British Rose, a kilogram saves ₹354.00 against ten 100 g bottles, which is worth having once rose is a proven seller. On Lavender and Gardenia the kilogram saves little or nothing; buying 1 kg of them "to get the wholesale price" only moves cash from your account onto your shelf. We sell the kilograms. On those two, don't buy them for the price.

Romantic oils where bigger is not cheaper

If you extend a gift range into the more distinctive romantic oils, check the ladder before you order. Several are priced flat, and some get dearer per gram at a middle size. These are facts from the price list on 24 September 2026, not guesses about why.

How many SKUs: four, six or eight

Worked example: a 600-candle gift season, 150 g candles at 8% (7.2 kg of oil), split evenly across four, six or eight scents. Each oil is bought as the mix of sizes that covers its need exactly — 1 kg units, then 500 g, then 100 g top-ups — so nothing is left idle. Test costs are 50 g of each oil.

Three conclusions. Oil cost is driven by which oils, not how many. Model B is cheaper per candle than Model A (₹49.75 against ₹51.05) because Fresh Strawberries and Gardenia are cheaper than the average of the core four. Model C is dearest (₹57.27) mainly because it adds Dark Vanilla, whose line alone costs ₹3,719.60 more than Fresh Strawberries' for the same 900 g, and because 900 g per scent falls below the 1 kg tier. Mixed sizes beat rounding up. Buying 1.8 kg of British Rose as 1 kg + 500 g + 3 × 100 g (₹5,687.60) costs ₹448.40 less than two 1 kg bottles (₹6,136.00), and leaves nothing on the shelf. The hidden SKU costs are not oil. Each extra scent is another test round, another label design, another line to forecast, and another chance to run out of one while overstocked on another.

Costing a 600-candle gift run

Worked example, Model B oils, 150 g candles at 8%. Wax is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹0.51 per gram (priced flat from 1 kg to 10 kg; stated ceiling 10%): ₹70.02 per candle. The 600-candle run needs 82.8 kg of wax, ₹42,012.72 worth at that rate; bought as eight 10 kg bags and one 5 kg bag (85 kg) that is ₹43,129.00. Every figure excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST.

The full run in clear 150 g jars comes to ₹132,044.72 in materials. Notice the order of costs: jar, then wax, then oil. At volume, shaving a rupee off the oil matters far less than the vessel decision. On wax, cheaper soy options exist: Natural Soy Pearl Wax is ₹0.42 per gram in the 50 kg bag (₹58.62 per candle), and Eco Soy CSI 400 is cheaper per gram still, but neither page states a fragrance ceiling, so test lower loads before switching a production run to it. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹0.60 per gram at 10 kg) allow up to 13%, headroom only Cinnamon Vanilla on this list could use. Braided alternatives such as Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made cost ₹12.00 each at 1,000; the right wick depends on jar diameter and oil, so run a melt-pool test on each jar and oil before a run.

Reorder triggers and cadence

The expensive mistake for a gift manufacturer is not paying ₹3.42 instead of ₹3.07 a gram. It is running out of the scent on a confirmed corporate order two weeks before delivery. Set reorder points before the season, not during it.
