Why dessert candles sell as gifts

A person buying a candle for themselves is choosing a scent they like. A person buying one as a gift is making a guess about someone else, often someone whose taste they do not know well: a colleague, a client, a relative, a host. That is the market dessert scents serve. Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and coconut are familiar to almost everyone, rarely offend, and name themselves: "Chocolate Fudge" on a label needs no explanation, where "Vetiver and Amber" does. In our judgement that is the whole commercial case for a dessert line. It is not the most sophisticated collection you can make, but it is one of the easiest to give.

India's gifting calendar suits it. Diwali on 8 November 2026 brings family and corporate hampers; Christmas on 25 December 2026 is a gifting occasion for many, especially in cities; Valentine's Day falls on 14 February 2027; and weddings, birthdays, housewarmings and return gifts run all year. Dessert candles slot into all of them, and they photograph well: a pink strawberry candle and a brown fudge candle side by side sell the box before anyone lifts the lid.

The five-dessert menu

A dessert line works when each candle is a different dessert, not five shades of vanilla. The five below were chosen so that every one has a different lead note (cocoa, caramel-vanilla, berry, mango-coconut, spice), which makes them easy to tell apart in a gift box and easy to colour differently. The notes quoted are from each CSI product page.

Fresh Strawberries is the one dessert on the list with a stated ceiling below 10%: its page says "Recommended fragrance load 6-9% for candles", so its test loads are 6%, 8% and 9%. Cinnamon Vanilla's page states "Up to 13% load for candles", but that headroom exists only in a wax that also allows 13%, such as Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468; in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 the wax's 10% governs. The lower of the two ceilings always wins, and the ceiling is a limit, not a target.

Dessert is not the same thing as bakery. This line stays with things served cold or set: fudge, custard, fruit and cream. Order follows the dessert menu above, not cost and not any claim of which sells best: CSI has no sales ranking or throw measurements for these oils and we will not invent them. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8% (12 g of oil).

Desserts CSI does not list, and the nearest oils

We would rather you hear the gaps from us than from a customer. On 24 September 2026, CSI lists no oil that is caramel or butterscotch on its own, no plain (untoasted) coconut-cream oil, no cheesecake, and nothing built on an Indian sweet: no kheer, gulab jamun, rasmalai, kulfi or mithai accord. Coconut itself is not a gap: Roasted Coconut Fragrance Oil describes "toasted coconut and coconut milk top notes, caramelised sugar and praline heart, and vanilla bean, tonka and sandalwood base" and states "candles (up to 10%)". On 24 September 2026 it is 15 g ₹93.00, 50 g ₹247.00, 100 g ₹495.00 and 1 kg ₹3,999.00, all in stock, with no 500 g size; ₹59.28 of oil per 8% candle at the 50 g price. If one of these is central to your plan, ask us on WhatsApp before you design around a substitute. Never describe a substitute as the thing it is not: a label that says "Coconut Cream" on a mango-led oil will disappoint the customer who reads it.

Gift formats and what each costs to fill

Dessert gifting is sold in small formats more often than big ones: a votive trio, a single tin in a hamper, a heart jar for Valentine's Day. The oil needed per candle falls with the size, which changes how far each bottle goes. All at 8% of total weight, oil priced at the Chocolate Fudge or Fresh Strawberries 50 g rate, wax at the CSI 464 10 kg rate (₹0.51 per gram).

The white version of the heart jar is out of stock on 24 September 2026; the red is in stock. Each figure includes one C1 wick (₹5.90) and excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST. Wick sizes are starting points: a 50 g heart and a 150 g jar will not want the same wick, so run a melt-pool test in each format and use the Candle Wicks collection to adjust.

The three-votive dessert box

Worked example: Chocolate Fudge, Fresh Strawberries and Dark Vanilla in three 70 g votives (₹92.64, ₹94.23 and ₹116.36), in a Corrugated 3 ply box 7 x 5 x 4 inch (₹1,336.00 for 50, ₹26.72 each) with one sheet of Premium Packing Tissue Paper (₹6.50): ₹336.44 in materials and packaging. The oil in the box is only ₹91.91 of that. Measure your filled votives before you buy boxes; we have not tested this box with this jar, and the packaging collection has other sizes.

Pricing: the cost stack and a price floor

We sell raw materials, not candles, and we do not know your labour, rent or channel fees, so we will not tell you what to charge. What we can give you is an accurate floor. The table below takes the materials cost of three products and shows them at 2.5 and 3 times materials. Those multipliers are illustrative, not advice; the point is to see how far apart the line really is once you price.

Three things follow. First, the dessert choice matters less than it looks: the dearest 150 g dessert costs ₹50.82 more to make than the cheapest, while the jar alone is 43% of the Chocolate Fudge candle's cost. Second, the trio box is where a gift business earns its keep, because three small candles, a box and tissue feel like more than one large candle for about 1.5 times the materials of a 150 g Chocolate Fudge jar. Third, all of these are material floors; your labour, packaging beyond the box, freight, platform fees and GST sit on top.

A corporate order, costed

Worked example: 100 three-votive boxes for a Diwali corporate order. Oil: each dessert needs 560 g (100 × 5.6 g), so buy 600 g of each for a test candle and pour loss: Chocolate Fudge as 500 g plus two 50 g (₹2,378.88, because the 100 g is out of stock), Fresh Strawberries as 500 g plus 100 g (₹2,147.60), Dark Vanilla as 500 g plus 100 g (₹4,630.00), ₹9,156.48 in oil. Containers: 300 votives, ₹9,558.00; 100 boxes, ₹2,672.00; one set of tissue, ₹650.00. Wax: 300 × 64.4 g is 19.32 kg, two 10 kg bags of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, ₹10,148.00. Wicks: 300 C1, three packs of 100, ₹1,770.00. Bought as whole packs, the order comes to ₹33,954.48, close to the per-unit worked example of ₹33,644.14 (100 boxes at ₹336.44). Ask for a bulk quote on WhatsApp before you quote your client, and confirm dispatch dates against the event.

Diwali on 8 November 2026 is 45 days after these prices were checked, which leaves time for one test round and one production pour if you order this week. Christmas on 25 December 2026 is 92 days away, and Valentine's Day on 14 February 2027 is far enough to test properly in December. Delivery time depends on your location; confirm dispatch on WhatsApp before you promise a client a date.
