Which Fragrances to Buy · India
Every maker wants to know which candle scents sell best in India. The honest answer starts with what nobody can tell you: there is no public sales data for Indian candle fragrances, and CSI publishes no unit figures. What exists is one real signal and a lot of good reasoning. This page separates the two.
1 signal
the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort order, as pulled on 24 September 2026 — everything else on this page is reasoning, labelled as such
Quick answers — read this first
Which candle fragrances sell best in India? No public sales data answers that. The one signal CSI has is its best-selling sort order: on 24 September 2026 the Fragrance Oils collection was headed by Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood and Citrus Lemon. That reflects what candle makers buy from CSI, not what their customers buy.

What does the best-selling sort actually tell me? The order in which CSI's own store ranks its oils by sales. It shows relative position, not quantities. CSI does not publish units sold, and this page does not invent any. See the one real signal.

Why would Indian customers prefer certain scents? Reasoning, not data: festivals and pujas favour woods and florals; gifting favours rose, vanilla and oud; heat and humidity favour fresh and citrus; familiarity favours scents like Jasmine, Raat Ki Rani and Gilli Mitti; and coffee and vanilla are comfort scents. See five reasons.

How should I test what sells for my customers? Pour an India-first test set — eight oils in 15 g costs ₹900.36 — and put the candles in front of real customers before you buy production sizes. How to Choose Your First Fragrance Oil Collection for a Candle Brand covers the full process.
The short answer
The signal: CSI's best-selling sort order on 24 September 2026, top seven: Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood, Citrus Lemon. Position only; no units are published.
The reasoning: Festivals, gifting, climate, familiarity and comfort each point towards particular families. These are arguments about how candles are bought, stated as arguments.
Indian florals: Jasmine (₹103.00 / 15 g) and Raat Ki Rani (₹130.00 / 15 g) were in stock; Rajnigandha and Mogra were out of stock at every size on the pull date.
Why some scents suit the Indian market — reasoning, not sales data What drives the purchase Families it points to (CSI examples) Festivals Diwali, pujas, weddings Gifting boxes, return gifts, corporate Climate heat, humidity, monsoon Familiarity scents from home and temple Comfort coffee, vanilla, sweets Woods and resins Sandalwood · Woody Oud Indian florals Jasmine · Raat Ki Rani Fresh and citrus Lemongrass · Blue Ocean Earthy Gilli Mitti Gourmands Roasted Coffee · Dark Vanilla Lines are reasoning about how candles are bought in India. The only popularity data CSI has is its best-selling sort order.
This is a map of arguments, not of sales. Each line says "this reason points towards this family". Some families are pointed at by several reasons — woods and Indian florals especially — which is why they appear in almost every Indian range. None of the lines is backed by published sales figures, because none exist.
Straight answer
Which candle fragrances sell best in India?
Nobody can answer that with data, and anyone who quotes you a percentage should be asked where it came from. There is no public sales data for Indian candle fragrances, and CSI publishes no unit figures. What CSI does have is its best-selling sort order: on 24 September 2026 the Fragrance Oils collection was headed by Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood and Citrus Lemon, with Jasmine 10th and Gilli Mitti 15th. That order reflects what candle makers buy from CSI, which is one step away from what their customers buy. Beyond that signal, reasoning helps: Indian festivals and pujas favour sandalwood, oud and florals; gifting favours rose, vanilla and oud; heat and humidity favour fresh and citrus scents; familiarity favours Jasmine, Raat Ki Rani and the monsoon-earth scent of Gilli Mitti; and coffee and vanilla are comfort scents everywhere. Use the sort and the reasoning to build a shortlist, then let your own customers decide with test candles.
One line: one real signal, five good reasons, and your own customers as the final test.
An India-first test set: Jasmine, Raat Ki Rani, Gilli Mitti, Sandalwood, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Lemongrass and Lime and British Rose in 15 g. ₹900.36 for eight oils that cover every reason on this page, enough for one 200 g test candle each.

The one real signal

There is exactly one piece of popularity evidence on this page. Everything after it is reasoning, and it is labelled that way.

Shopify stores can sort a collection by best-selling, and CSI's Fragrance Oils collection has that order. We pulled it on 24 September 2026. It ranks oils by CSI's own sales, but it publishes position only, not quantities. We do not know, and will not guess, whether the first oil sells twice as much as the tenth or only slightly more. The table shows the first fifteen, each with its family and price.

15 Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) Woody / resin ₹140.00 ₹896.00 ₹8,960.00

Three honest limits apply. First, CSI's customers are mostly candle makers, not candle buyers; the order shows what makers choose to stock, which is informed by their customers but not the same thing. Second, the order includes history: an oil that has been listed for years has had longer to accumulate sales than one added this season. Third, price affects it: cheaper oils are easier to buy in quantity. With those limits stated, the signal still says something useful. Every family appears in the top fifteen, and familiar, affordable scents lead.

What you can say, and what you cannot
You can say "Lavender is at the top of CSI's best-selling sort". You cannot say "Lavender is India's best-selling candle scent" or "40% of customers prefer florals". No data supports the second two, and a retail buyer or gifting client who asks for the source will find none. Keep your own marketing to claims you can show.

Five reasons, stated as reasons

With no sales data, the next best thing is to reason about how candles are actually bought in India. Each of the five reasons below is an argument you can test with your own customers. None is a statistic.

Reasoning about the Indian candle market · not sales data
Five reasons and the families they point to
Reason The argument Families it favours CSI examples in stock
Festivals Diwali, pujas and family occasions bring candles into homes, and the scents that suit them are the ones people already associate with those days. Woods, resins, Indian florals Sandalwood, Woody Oud, Raat Ki Rani
Gifting A gift candle has to please someone else, so buyers choose scents that are safe, warm and recognisably luxurious. Rose, vanilla, oud British Rose, Dark Vanilla, White Royal Oud
Climate Much of India is hot and humid for much of the year, and heavy scents can feel oppressive in a warm room. Light, clean scents feel easier. Fresh, citrus, aquatic Lemongrass and Lime, Blue Ocean, Citrus Lemon
Familiarity A scent that recalls a garden at night, a temple or the first rain is recognised at once and needs no explanation on a label. Indian florals, earthy Jasmine, Raat Ki Rani, Gilli Mitti
Comfort Coffee and vanilla are comfort scents across cultures, and café culture has made coffee a familiar home scent in Indian cities. Gourmands Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla

Notice how often two or three reasons point to the same family. Sandalwood and oud serve festivals and gifting. Jasmine and Raat Ki Rani serve festivals and familiarity. That overlap is the strongest part of the argument: a scent that satisfies several buying reasons at once has more chances to sell. It is also consistent with the sort order, where Sandalwood sits sixth and Jasmine tenth — but consistent is not proof.

The climate argument deserves a caution. It is about how a scent feels in a warm room, not about how the oil behaves in the wax. Heat and humidity affect soy wax surface and cure regardless of fragrance, and a fresh scent will not fix a candle that sweats in summer. Fragrance Oils for Diwali Candle Making in India and Best Indian Fragrances for Diwali Candles look at festive scents in more detail.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. It would help us to tell you that the inspired-by perfume oils are what sells in India now. We have no data showing that, and they are the dearest oils we list — the Club De Nuit Intense Inspired oil costs ₹24.06 a gram at 1 kg. They may suit your market; test them before you build a range on them. The top of our own sort is led by familiar, affordable scents, not by designer profiles.

Familiar Indian scents, priced

An Indian floral or an Indian earth scent often costs more than its global cousin. The familiarity is what you are paying for.

For each familiar Indian scent in the catalogue, there is usually a globally familiar oil in the same family. The table puts them side by side so you can see what the Indian profile costs inside one 200 g candle at 8%, priced at 100 g. Two classic Indian florals, Rajnigandha (Tuberose) and Mogra, were out of stock at every size on the pull date, so they are listed but not priced as buyable.

Indian-familiar versus globally familiar · oil per 200 g candle at 100 g · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
What familiarity costs
Family Indian-familiar oil Oil per candle Global counterpart Oil per candle Difference
Floral (jasmine) Raat Ki Rani ₹112.00 Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹80.00 ₹32.00
Floral (jasmine) Jasmine ₹68.80 British Rose ₹54.75 ₹14.05
Earthy Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) ₹143.36 Vetiver ₹96.00 ₹47.36
Woody Sandalwood ₹80.43 Woody Oud ₹72.50 ₹7.93
Spiced wood Saffron Cedarwood ₹111.39 Sage and Cedarwood ₹111.39 ₹0.00
White floral Rajnigandha (Tuberose) · out of stock Out of stock Gardenia ₹69.28 —
White floral Mogra · out of stock Out of stock Jasmine ₹68.80 —

The pattern is mixed. Raat Ki Rani and Gilli Mitti cost noticeably more than their counterparts. Jasmine and Sandalwood sit close to theirs — Jasmine is only ₹14.05 a candle above British Rose. Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood are identical in price at 100 g. So familiarity does not always carry a premium; when it does, it is usually the most distinctive profiles. Material cost per candle, adding the ₹186.92 base of wax, wick and jar, runs from ₹241.67 (British Rose) to ₹330.28 (Gilli Mitti), excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Building on a scent you cannot restock. Rajnigandha and Mogra are exactly the kind of Indian florals the familiarity argument favours, and both were out of stock at every size on the pull date. Do not print labels for a scent you cannot buy today. Ask on WhatsApp for a restock date, and in the meantime Gardenia and Jasmine cover the white-floral request.

Three oils the reasoning favours

These three are favoured by more than one of the five reasons. That makes them strong candidates for an Indian range. It does not make them guaranteed sellers.

1
Indian floral · festivals + familiarity + gifting
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Fragrance Oil
Night-blooming jasmine, a scent many Indian customers know from gardens and evenings. It sits at position 25 in the sort and in the Premium tier, putting ₹112.00 of oil into a candle at 100 g. Every size from 15 g to 1 kg was in stock.

Earthy · familiarity + climate
Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) Fragrance Oil
The scent of dry earth after the first rain, sold as Gilli Mitti with a patchouli base. It is 15th in the best-selling sort. It is also priced flat at ₹8.96 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg, so a small maker pays the same rate as a large one above the 15 g.

3
Gourmand · gifting + comfort
Dark Vanilla Fragrance Oil
Fourth in the best-selling sort, and the richest of the comfort scents. It fits gift boxes and winter well. At ₹126.40 a candle from 100 g it belongs in a gift-priced line; Roasted Coffee at ₹62.40 is the everyday comfort scent.

Finding out for your own customers

Since no one can tell you what sells in India, the most valuable data is the data you collect yourself. It costs little. Eight 15 g testers and an afternoon at a stall, a pop-up or with a group of repeat customers will tell you more about your market than any list. The steps below keep that test honest.

1
Shortlist from both sourcesTake oils from the top of the best-selling sort and oils favoured by the reasons that match your customers. The India-first set of eight covers both.
2
Pour identical test candlesSame wax, wick, jar and 8% load, so fragrance is the only difference. Cure for at least a week.
3
Let customers smell, and record what they chooseOffer the candles unlabelled or with neutral numbers. Note which they pick up first, which they ask about, and which they would buy. That is your own sales signal.
4
Separate occasionsAsk what the candle is for. A scent chosen for a gift and a scent chosen for the bedroom belong in different lines.
5
Buy production sizes only of the winnersMove the scents your customers chose to 100 g, and keep the rest as testers until a season or an occasion calls for them.
6
Repeat each seasonPreferences shift with the festive calendar and the weather. Re-run the test before Diwali and before summer. How to Set Reorder Levels for Candle Fragrance Oils covers reorder timing.

A Diwali run, costed

With Diwali on 8 November 2026, the festive reason is the one most makers act on first. Here is a small gifting run: 20 candles each of Sandalwood, Raat Ki Rani and Dark Vanilla, 60 candles in all. Each scent needs 320 g of oil at 16 g a candle. The table compares buying 350 g as three 100 g bottles and a 50 g with buying a single 500 g pack. Wax, wicks and jars for the run are in the shopping list.

Festive trio · 320 g of oil each · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
3 × 100 g + 50 g, or one 500 g?
Oil 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g (350 g) ₹/g of the mix 1 × 500 g ₹/g at 500 g Extra cash for the 500 g
Sandalwood ₹1,779.44 ₹5.08 ₹2,513.40 ₹5.03 ₹733.96
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) ₹2,470.00 ₹7.06 ₹3,387.00 ₹6.77 ₹917.00
Dark Vanilla ₹2,780.00 ₹7.94 ₹3,840.00 ₹7.68 ₹1,060.00

For all three, the 100 g and 50 g mix costs less cash: ₹2,710.96 less across the trio, simply because it buys 150 g less oil per scent. Per gram, the 500 g is cheaper for each, but only by 5 to 29 paise a gram. So the 500 g is the right buy only if you will use the extra 150 g soon — for a second festive run or the November–February wedding season. If this is a one-off Diwali batch, buy the mix. The order below does.

The CSI principle
Say what you know, reason about the rest, and test the difference.
The best-selling sort is a real signal with real limits. The reasons behind Indian preferences are sound arguments, not statistics. Your own customers, smelling your own candles, are the only data that tells you what will sell for you.

For fixed lists built from the same signal, see Best 5 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business and Best 10 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business. For festive detail, Best Fragrance Oils for Diwali Candles; for wedding favours, Best Fragrance Oils for Wedding Return-Gift Candles; for corporate gifting, Best Candle Fragrances for Corporate Gifting.

If someone tells you what percentage of India prefers florals, ask for the source. Then go and pour a test candle.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier could answer this question with confident claims that happen to favour its dearest oils. We have no sales data for the Indian candle market, so this page says so, shows the one signal we do have, and labels everything else as reasoning.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. The best-selling order is the Fragrance Oils collection's sort as pulled on that date; it gives position only, and CSI publishes no unit sales. Stock status is as listed on the pull date. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-gram and per-candle figures are plain arithmetic on the listed prices.

The five reasons, the family links and the festive examples are arguments about how candles are bought in India, not findings. Test them with your own customers. For scent suggestions, stock checks, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular candle scent in India?
No published data answers that. At CSI, the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort on 24 September 2026 was headed by Lavender, followed by British Rose and Roasted Coffee. That shows what candle makers buy from CSI, by position only, not what Indian consumers buy most.
Which fragrances are best for Diwali candles?
By reasoning rather than data: woods like Sandalwood and oud, Indian florals like Jasmine and Raat Ki Rani, and warm gourmands like Dark Vanilla suit the festival and gifting. Best Fragrance Oils for Diwali Candles goes into Diwali scents in detail.
Do Indian customers prefer floral candles?
There is no survey data to say so. Florals do satisfy several buying reasons at once — gifting, festivals and familiarity — and British Rose (2nd) and Jasmine (10th) sit near the top of CSI's best-selling sort. Test florals with your own customers rather than assuming.
What candle scents suit hot weather in India?
Reasoning suggests light, clean scents feel easier in a warm room: Lemongrass and Lime, Blue Ocean, Citrus Lemon, Cucumber Green Tea. Heat affects soy wax surface and cure whatever the fragrance, so test your candles in the conditions they will be burned in.
Is Gilli Mitti fragrance oil popular?
It was 15th in CSI's best-selling sort on 24 September 2026. It costs ₹140.00 for 15 g and is priced flat at ₹8.96 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg, which puts ₹143.36 of oil into a 200 g candle at 8%.
Where can I find candle fragrance sales data for India?
We are not aware of any public source, and CSI does not publish unit sales. The practical substitute is your own test: pour identical candles in a shortlist of scents and record which ones your customers choose. How to Choose Your First Fragrance Oil Collection for a Candle Brand sets out the process.

Stock status is as listed on the pull date. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits.
